I Tried a Traditional British Cruise - It Was Eye Opening

  • I’ve just disembarked a traditional British cruise, despite very much not being a traditional person. We had formal nights and dress codes, and I had to share my dinner table with strangers at a set time and I came across a few strange rules which I was not expecting. This cruise was very different from any cruise I’ve ever taken before and we had highs and lows that I could never have predicted. Those highs and lows were literal as well, the ship was so rocky and the seas were seriously rough.

I usually cruise with the casual cruise lines, I love big new exciting cruise ships like the ones that have ropes courses and waterslides, I’ve been skydiving on cruise ships and even tried surfing which was so cool. Taking a traditional cruise on a small ship wasn’t on my radar but when I saw an amazing itinerary sailing with the traditional cruise line Fred Olsen I thought maybe this would be my chance.
Reading their website I saw that it said ‘If after a couple of days on board you find that it is not right for you, we will fly you home and your cruise fare will be refunded.’ I’ve never seen a cruise line promise anything like that before so I figured I had nothing to lose really, and I booked the cruise.
I was nervous, I didn’t know if I’d fit in, I wasn’t sure if there were lots of rules I’d have to follow, I thought I might find it a bit boring to be honest and had no idea how a small ship would handle the notoriously rocky seas on the route I was taking.
We embarked the ship in Newcastle and embarkation was made very easy by the fact that I’d already been sent my luggage tags and tickets pre-cruise so there wasn’t anything for me to organise myself. With most of the big cruise lines you have to remember to print everything you need so this was the first real difference I noticed. This was a really good sign for me that traditional cruising might have some benefits that I hadn’t thought about. I was still nervous but only time would tell if I’d be converted to the more classic style of cruising.

Royal Caribbean was like this 30-35yrs ago. Back then wasn't a Family Line, didn't have many Cabin's hold more then 2 passengers and at 22yrs old was only 2 other passengers onboard younger then Wife and me. It had Tea Time. Buffet during day and nite required shirt/pants, no Swimsuits even with cover ups. At nite it had Waiters, tables had Candles and Table Clothes. Been sticking with Ships that Cruise with 2000 or less and on longer 10+ nites and never feel crowded. At least until is no more smaller ship left.

Its funny I was just thinking the same thing and I was trying to ponder why, because I'm not crazy about small spaces, so I always assumed if I went on a cruise bigger would be better, but a giant crowded city at sea doesn't sound much fun!

About 2 separate duvets - in Finland and partly in other Nordic countries it is rare for a couple to share a duvet, everyone wants to wrap up into a duvet 😄When I was married to a British man for over 20 years, that was one thing we often argued about! On a cruise I prefer the late dining shift. When the ship is moored until evening, you can spend more time outside the ship without having to hurry for your dinner. And on days where you have a full day excursion, it's nice to have time to take a shower and put on clean clothes before going to dinner.

Top tip! Book your room on a low deck, near the center of the ship if you get seasick! The higher the deck, the more to the outside your room the more it accentuates the motion of the ship. The more "premium" the room, the worse the ride. A window, porthole, sliding glass doors will make your seasickness worse. So at least spend the time in your room in comfort, not feeling ill. Retiring when you feel ill to a high outside cabin will not improve how you feel. Most ships have a virtual window on the TV if you need a "view". Good project for your kids science fair, relative motion on board a ship.

I guess Sinatra's 'My Way' is played a lot there because people who were growing up in the 60s would remember this song as a kind of anthem - and when they die, they have it played for the same reason. So all the other people that age are hearing it as an anthem but people outside that generation are thinking 'this is a funeral song'. In 30 years there will probably be a different funeral song...

I worked as a consultant on cruise ships, inspecting and adjudicating health & safety, food standards, hygiene and the nasty stuff such as bed bugs. Fred Olsen have always been one of the best rated for all of the above. Before booking a cruise, make sure you know exactly which ship you will be sailing on, and check its ratings (there are some excellent, detailed websites that illustrate current and previous ratings). Personally, because of my work, and cruising so much in the past (and getting paid for it!), I don't go on cruises very much these days, but if I did, I wouldn't go on a cruise if smoking is permitted. My next cruise will probably be with TUI, in the eastern Mediterranean and on one of their German-speaking ships, as I am from Hannover DE.

I much prefer the freedom of car trips, if you want to stay longer, you can.
On the Calais/Dover ferry after a run to Holland, I bumped into a man I had worked with in the 80s. He was on his way home after a coach trip to the Amalfi Coast. He and I were getting dirty looks from a woman. When he walked away, she asked me if he was a friend of mine. I explained that he wasn't, just an ex-colleague. She then told me that on the outward trip, most people were ready to kill him. With 40 people on a coach and maybe 1,000s on a ship, the chance of being stuck with an idiot is pretty high.

We didn't always have dinner together, but the men took ukelele lessons together. The other ladies took hula lessons, but having to be at a lesson was WAY too structured for me. So I was the designated photographer for the final performance. We aren't a just sit and chat with random people sorts, so this kinda forces us to interact with other people. I dont' know why we don't...we always enjoy meeting new people when we do.....

Looks like a lovely ship. Restful and tasteful. But like you, we can't do the late dining. It would not cost FO anything to ask customers for their early or late dining preference. It would be the difference between us booking or not booking. And I actually enjoy meeting other people at the dining table. I'm happy to share so it's not a problem for me. Thanks for the review.
