My wife & I bought photos from a session on a Carnival cruise. She was very careful to carry the folder with the pictures separately on disembarkation day so they wouldn’t get bent inside our luggage. After we disembarked, she realized she left the folder where we were staged waiting for our number to be called. She was devastated. She notified lost & found and they said we would be contacted if they were turned in. She also emailed the photographer to see if she could repurchase the photos. After hearing the story, the photographer offered to replace the pictures free of charged. The exact package we purchased was mailed to us a few weeks later. Kudos to the photographer and Carnival for their understanding & great customer service!

Im a former cruise ship musician and I have a funny story: we docked somewhere in Spain (I cant for the life of me remember where!) and the port was basically right downtown, in the heart of the city. You could disembark and walk to the town centre in minutes. So I did just that. A couple hours later, I was walking in the town square-which was kind of parallel with the water-and I look over and see something that made my heart stop...OUR SHIP PULLING AWAY, BACK INTO THE OCEAN! I was freaking out, losing my mind...did I miss All-Aboard time? I didn’t think so, as I still had a couple of hours left in port. I was very confused, but I started running towards the port anyway, in a panic! I was totally convinced I was going to be stranded in Spain, with no passport or luggage...and lose my job! As I was racing back to the port, I ran into a co-worker who saw my panic and was alarmed “Why are you running? What’s wrong?’ I pointed to the ship, pulling out of port, and my co-worker chuckled and said ‘Oh, don’t worry, they are just pulling out and repositioning to make room for another ship-they’ll be coming right back in to port!’ Well, you should have seen my face-dying of embarrassment. He laughed a little and said not to worry, it was a common mistake. I was just soooo glad I hadn’t missed All-Aboard time, and my emotions ranged from sheer relief to anger that we weren’t for-warned about it. Relief won.
What an adventure, either way 😂

On embarkation day, I was so excited to show my travel mates the ship that we began our exploration before we even went to our cabins. I had a very expensive purse with $2000, my cell phone, a camera, all my credit cards, a wallet that my sons had given to me and my ID with me. We stopped midway on our tour at the Lido bar to have a drink. YES!!!! I left my purse sitting right there. We continued our tour for about 30 minutes before I realized what I had done. I left everyone standing there without an explanation and ran to the pool as fast as I could. A VERY sweet lady was standing there with my purse. She had used my phone to call my father to let him know that she was holding it for me. That was before phones locked. My father then called my husband who had no idea why I suddenly ran away and told him what was going on. Everything was in my purse and all was good. I couldn’t quit hugging the nice lady.

Using the loo and forgetting my phone was definitely a mistake! However, the biggest mistake I ever made on a cruise was being too trusting by handing over way too much information when purchasing a Pandora charm in a shop in St. John's, Antigua. Now that was a huge mistake, because the sales lady took down all this extra wonderful information I was giving her and started purchasing a ton of stuff with my credit card. Thankfully, my husband goes over all our purchases (credit card statements) and asked why I bought two tickets on a German train?

My worst cruise mistake happened on the final night. Came back to our cabin after a few late night drinks, had to pack and put our suitcases outside the door to be collected and taken off the ship by crew in preparation for disembarkation. The next morning our suit cases had been collected (great).....I had a shower and got dressed,.....ermmm...... Where are my clothes??? !!! I had actually pack my all the clothes I needed to wear and my suitcase had already been taken off the ship. Oh no....Panic !!!! Luckily I had kept my evening suit to carry off separately. So I had to wear that to breakfast and walk off the ship to collect my bags dressed in my posh get up. I did get a few strange looks. Lesson: I now always keep my "travel clothes" separate once on board and put them aside to avoid making the same mistake again.

Late September 2019 I was traveling with a friend from Southern California to Barcelona for a 9 days cruise to Rome. While sitting in the Airport waiting for our first flight of the trip I realized two things. The credit card that I had booked my trip on was not in my wallet and my iPad mini, which was loaded with movies and ebooks for my trip, was not in its case. The night before I had ran to the store to buy a few last minute items and had put my credit card in my jacket pocket. By the way, the same jacket was in the trunk of my car parked at the airport, not that I realized that at the time. My iPad was on my bedside table where I had been charging it. How I packed an empty case without noticing it was weightless is beyond me.

I think my two biggest cruise screw-ups were when I forgot to reapply sunscreen after snorkelling or swimming. One time, seriously sunburnt back, the other time, seriously sunburnt feet. I did almost miss a ship’s behind-the-scenes tour until someone else amongst the group of singles I was travelling with reminded me of it.

  • @MJC1124

Best tip is to take a copy of the daily itinerary if you are going off the ship. It will have details of the ship's agent in the port of call. Should you get into any sort of trouble, e.g. miss the sailing, are taken ill, have a fall, are robbed or assaulted, contact the agent for help. And ALWAYS double check the time the ship will depart and write it down! They do not wait for you.

My sister also had a panic upon boarding: the announcement said that all of the luggage had been placed by our cabins, but while my big suitcase was there outside our cabin door, her suitcase wasn't there and she started looking around for it. She had put a tracking device on her suitcase that said it was nearby, but she still looked up and down. It wasn't until we opened our cabin door that she discovered that her suitcase was placed INSIDE the door rather than OUTSIDE. The relief on her face was palpable!

We overslept on embarkation day. No sleep on the red eye to Barcelona. Stayed up as late as we could that night. Very effective room darkening draperies. Woke up at half past noon. Still made it with time to spare, but what a shock to sleep 16 hours! As a result, I am now much more diligent about setting alarms that I don’t think I’ll need.

The first couple of times I had been with other people so I just followed them back. However, one time I went solo and though I knew how long i could stay until final boarding. Turns out I had MISSED the last crew shuttle back to the ship and had to get a taxi back. All the security were furious with me and I got a severe telling off from my manager AND the cruise director. Photos taken on a cruise are always a disaster for me. Formal night, photographer roaming around the dining room. I had just taken a bite of a roll I just buttered when the photographer decides to take a picture of my husband and I. My husband stands up behind me and the photographer says to me, “you have crumbs on your dress” so I brushed them off and doing so it revealed my bra strap peeking out a little which the photographer also pointed out so I fixed that. Well, evidently I had also managed to get butter on my hand because the next thing the photographer said to me was “you have butter in your hair” . I’m not comfortable getting my picture taken either. Even more so after that event. I refused to go to the kiosk to see how that one came out. It’s funny now but not so much when it was happening.

Took my first cruise last Jan. I found it intrusive, rude and tacky to have a roaming photographer on the main dining room. He seemed a bit too pushy so had to be stern and tell him no as he was ready to start clicking his flash. They should have a service you could order from the app to your table or set up or system where you can ask the waiter to get the photographer to your table if you want. But some guy roaming around the dining area asking people while eating if they want photos is awkward and tacky.

Then Dory might spot your photo, feel a shared sense of loss, and work tirelessly to reunite you and your lost photos and end your suffering.
Clearly, you should try to meet her half way by booking a flight to Australia and a cruise out of Sydney so as to be closer to her. Well, once that's again possible, of course. Oh, and swim over/around the jellyfish filled waters, not through them.

Then scrambling to get family to fax/scan birth certificates to the Cruise line and getting on the ship 10 minutes before departure. Talk about panic!!! They found our passports a month later sitting in someone’s office at the airport!

We used to do a few photos on Princess and Cunard and did them on formal nightts. We avoided the ones where they want to take your photo as you return to the ship after a four hour walking excursion. The best deal we had as with a Viking River cruise where one of the staff was the official videographer and went on all the excursions and was all over the boat and at the end of the 14 days he sold us a dvd of the trip for like $25. Great price and we then had memories of places and new friends.

I've done worse. One day I thought our shore excursion that day started at 11:00. It was really 9:00. So no tour, blew all that money, didn't see Rhodes. Another time my daughter and I got into what I thought was the line (queue, you'd say) for our St. Petersburg tour. I eventually learned that it was the line for people who WEREN'T taking any shore excursions. Rather than just going back to the ship in defeat, my daughter and I illegally took a cab into St. Petersburg and started touring on our own. We eventually ran into another Norwegian Cruise Line tour in (our cruise line and ship) at one of the museums. They made some calls and let us join their tour. I ultimately filed a refund request, and they ended up refunding half our money for the shore excursion, which was quite reasonable. Moral: if you're not sure you're in the right line, ASK!
We had another major travel blunder that was not cruise-related. My wife, daughter, and I were going to be flying to Australia. My wife thought the flight left about 9:00 p.m. It was 2:00 p.m. and we were merrily packing our suitcases. Then my wife decided to actually look at the tickets, and oops, our flight was in an hour and a half!!! Extreme panic! Luckily the flight ended up leaving a couple of hours late, so we actually made it. Moral: don't think you know the time you're leaving, check and make sure! Kind of obvious, I know . . . Actually, this moral applies equally well to the first debacle I related. Live and learn.

I nearly had heart failure during a trip to Cleveland, OH from the UK years ago. I was picked up from the airport by a friend and we decided to grab something to eat not far from the airport. I had a black nylon travel doc wallet I used to carry my passport, tickets, insurance docs, and a lot of travellers' cheques (back when they were still a thing) which I took into the restaurant with me, putting it right next to me on the seat. After the meal we headed back to the car, busily catching up, and had driven about five mins down the road when I suddenly realised I had left the wallet lying there on the seat... We dashed back to the restaurant and discovered it was still there on the seat where I had left it.
Even worse... When heading for a train from Reading to Gatwick on my way to visit my future hubby here in the States a couple of years later. I had that same wallet and, on that occasion it also contained a $1000 USD tip given to me by my Saudi employer (I was a female bodyguard back then, yes really). So anyway, I had lugged my bags up some stairs to cross over a platform and was hurrying across the bridge to get to the right platform when I heard someone behind me shout, "Hey! You dropped something!" Although I was on a mission to not miss the train I turned to look, as you do, and the guy was holding up that wallet... I still thank God for that honest person with such a loud voice! I think it took me about half an hour for my pulse to get back to normal on that train.
I have stopped using that wallet... :D

We were sailing from Southampton for a Baltic cruise. I thought I was very clever and thrifty to book tickets on the National Express bus from London’s Victoria Station. We got a taxi from the hotel to the station with loads of time to spare. My husband was chatting with someone while we were waiting and suddenly felt for his bag with our passports. Not there. We raced to the information desk to see if anyone found it. No. Maybe it was in the taxi? The clerk called the hotel to see if they could tell us which taxi. “Oh, a little green bag? It’s here in the lobby.” We asked her to call a taxi and have him bring it to us. My husband paced in front of the station while I tried to get tickets to the next bus. He found the bag, then found me and told me our original bus was running late because of traffic. We got on the bus, raced from the bus terminal in Southampton, took a taxi to the port. We were one of the last to board but we made it.

So we're just walking up to the port entrance on embarkation day. My friend says he's going to grab his boarding documents from his luggage. He then passes passes me a set of boarding documents while he finishes closing up his luggage again. I was suprised he handed me my documents even though I had already printed a set of my own. He stands up and then proceeds to ask me to hand him his documents. I was suprised at his request and told him I printed my own and that he just handed me documents with my name on it, not his. He proceeds to say he handed me his own documents. I told him again you only handed me my documents, not your own. He then insists he handed me his documents. I give him the same answer. He then asks to me to stop joking and give him his boarding docs he earlier gave me. I again explain he never handed me his docs. So he starts getting angry/cursing and I explained I don't kid around travel documents. Now I'm getting angry and start to curse several times again,. So I finally said since we had mine, they can look up our account and to confirm he's paid up and who he is. Getting on was a breeze, no issues, even though he never had his documents. But that certainly was not a happy start to our cruise.

When cruising my husband always leaves everything up to me, which in itself can get frustrating. So much rides on my shoulders that even the smallest of mistakes on my part appears huge. On one cruise in 2016, my brother and sister-in-law came along. I planned everything down to a science. Not only was I planning our cruise, but also theirs. They were coming from Ohio and we were coming from Florida at different times (dates), taking different excursions, renting cars and selling off the remaining seats to other passengers on the ship, however, we were all staying at the same hotel in Spain before we boarding the NCL Spirit. We finally made it on the ship and discovered only on our reservation and such was messed up. The only thing that helped us was the fact I keep current copies (printouts) of everything purchased before getting on the ship. I nearly had a nervous breakdown until this was all resolved, since I did pour my whole life into the planning process for over several months to make all this work. In my opinion, it wasn't until that moment my husband truly saw the work and rewards into all I do in putting together such a big adventure. The crew (someone in charge, but don't remember their name or status) sent their apologizes a few days later and we were given a bottle of wine, fresh chocolate covered strawberries and a cheese plate, as well as a short apologetic note.

Our embarkation from New Orleans Port was chaos. Everyone got on late. Never had a safety talk or anything g about Muster stations. Once finally in boat I was in room to drop off bags and at bar and hot tub within 15 minutes of entering ship Lmfao. I figured if there was an emergency just play it by ear. Trying to get from one end of ship to other to find muster station on an emergency with no elevators and no light is probably not realistic anyway!!!!!!

My husband accidentally packed his disembarkation trousers on our last night and realised this after the case had been out outside our cabin and taken away. I had to put on my luckily cruise supplied robe and locate the suitcase room (which involved an awful lot of up and down decks whilst wearing a robe in a ship full of people in evening dress) and then I had to trawl through all the piles of cases, find his case and get them back again. Good thing it was a small ship. On our next cruise unknown to me he packed his folding penknife in his case as I was always forgetting to cut labels out of my clothes before I packed and some of them had very strong string. Shortly after we arrived in our cabin he had a call to go back to the terminal as they had a query about the contents of his case. He is disabled so they had to send a wheelchair for him and when he got there he found the penknife had shown up in x-ray. He was allowed to keep it.

So you know, of course I forgot it. I remembered when we were boarding the shuttle, but I was not allowed to return to the ship to get it. It was in my bag, already stowed on the ship. Luckily with my very vague description and where I was standing in line, the head baggage guy was able to locate my bag and I was able to get the certificate.

When you started to tell that last story, I thought you were going to say you missed the ship because of the one hour difference! PHEW!! Glad you didn't. Everything else was just an "oh well" moment but if you had said you missed the ship in a port, as you say, I just have no words!!

We had a similar problem with my son's laptop but on a land holiday. He had left it in the motorhome at the end of our holiday. We'd got into the hotel we were staying at that day and realised the laptop was missing. We had to get the motorhome company to transport the laptop to the hotel at a cost of $16. The stress is terrible!!!
