    The Mokwheel Basalt ST is a torque sensor fat tire ebike with an optional power station inverter that allows you to power AC devices from your ebike battery, as well as charge your battery with solar panels. The ebike power station and solar panels cost extra money, but the battery comes with the inverter port regardless. I hope you enjoy this ebike review as we encounter a bike thief and see the outcome of the interaction.
    This could be a good ebike for camping or going on long adventures since the inverter power station allows you to power 120v home appliances with the ebike battery.

    I'd like to point out the issue I had at 19:32 was my own fault. There is an additional bolt UNDER the stem that needs to be tightened down, I thought only the two on the sides need to be tightened. The one underneath is kinda hidden and one might not think to look there for it, so once this is tightened it is locked in place solid. Also, if you missed it, we encountered a bike thief at 16:13

    One of your best reviews. Thank you for showing controller programming highlights. Battery indicator that is either accurate or programmable is a must. Some great features on the bike. 90+nm motor at somehow just 500w is awesome. Grips, fork, cool inverter. Cadence sensor with 9 pas levels is actually the best for most riding (technical riding that needs instant response exception), because you just set a target speed, and the more you pedal, the less work motor/battery does. The purpose of pedaling is exercise+range. Not ergonomic speed control, and then having your issues/points of complaint over how ergonomic it actually is. Throttle is ergonomic speed control.
    Torque is by far the most important ebike feature. It can never be too twitchy/torquy. You just need the right PAS setting for the circumstances. You can't take off ahead of traffic from a light too fast. You always want to be able to start from middle of steep hill, and be able to explore somewhere that surprises you with hill steepness.
    I'm not sure what's happening with their battery UI. A marketing bias is typical of showing full bars as long as possible. Did you have 8/10 bars after your ride? Did you keep riding it afterwards and notice "accurate bars"?

      I definitely agree on the importance of torque! I do have my torque ramp softened though because the bike has flipped over more than once. The torque comes up quick enough to leave most cars behind, but no longer picks up the front wheel when I start off.

    Love the extra entertainment and drama of stolen bikes at 16:30+. Nice of you to help the girls with how to lock their bikes. I grew up in Venice/Marina del Rey and got a few bikes stolen growing up. Now I use a huge Kryptonite Chain that weighs a ton, but not too bad to carry around with an E-Bike.

    Matt Thank you for all of your comprehensive reviews of all these ebikes. There's so many options out there and few dealers so dropping a couple grand through the web and having something shipped is a little risky. I received a Basalt ST last week and it's DOA. Assembly was EZ. After charging the battery overnight I installed it, held to ON button, and for a fleeting second the HELLO lit up on the LCD and then it disappeared. I noticed at 3:20 on your vid you said you had to hold the ON button down for a minute before it came on. I've checked all the connector pins and the battery shows a GREEN lit full charge. I've called Mokwheel, left messages, been cut off on hold, and sent an email to no avail. Buyer beware of Mokwheel

    I just purchased this bike today!! I bought 2. Basalt ST Large in Orange and a regular in black and white. I got so many upgrades and bought a Küat/ NV 2.0 e-bike rack for fat tire bikes! I received the power inverter, and 5 free extras for $1,799.00 at a bike shop in Anaheim, Ca. Can't wait to go riding in Carlsbad/ Oceanside, Ca next weekend 🙌
    It was either a Rad Rover 6 Plus or the Mokwheel Basalt ST.

    I am all happy owner of the Mokwheel Tor 2023... it is a tank and super fun to run around the lake with or light off-roading and I have a suspension post for my seat that came with all sorts of added accessories for free as I got it over Mother's Day and it's a great company that had sent it for free shipping and no tax which I don't know if that is always the case but that was awesome for mine and I have to say that 'e-bikes are gateway drug to motorcycles' in a good way and as long as you gear up properly they're super fun and can be a bit safer than riding a motorcycle!!! Now I went and bought a 2004 Kawasaki Vulcan 750 cc that is around 500 lb... I was going to get a CFMOTO 450cc but my buddy said I would outgrow that too fast so I figure go-big-or-go-home but as long as you're out riding good for you and it's way better than sitting on the couch watching TV

I purchased the Basalt this past weekend based on a bunch of technical research and how I plan to use an e bike, Your review was excellent an confirmed that I am going to love the bike when it arrives. They are running some great deals right now. $1999 for the Basalt and $700 in free accessories (includes the inverter). I’ll update once I have mine up and running. I am 6 feet tall and 210 lbs so it was great to see the bike handle so well for you.

      as an update, about a week after receiving the bike, the controller died, but they shipped another one out to me with no charge. Since then, I’ve had no problem at all and I love the bike. At 6 feet tall it is a big bike, especially when you have to step over the middle bar.
      If you’re considering this bike, you may want to look at the step through version where the middle bar is much lower.
      I have found the battery life is very good, and will certainly very depending on the PAS level and the hills you encounter while riding. on flat terrain I have found that level one or level two of the pedal assist is certainly sufficient to keep moving along at a consistent 12 to 15 miles an hour. i’ve only had to use PAS five for very steep incline hills. it would be nice if the battery indicator showed it percentage instead of ours on the digital display but when you get down to a low battery situation, the last two remain red showing that you’re low on power but even then I was able to get several more miles before it was completely gone. some of that why there is a bar on the left and a bar on the right from what I can tell they monitor the two different battery cells within the battery pack. it’s kind of pointless because the motor is drawing off of both battery cells at the same time so they are always depleting at the same rate.

    Great review, and seems like a decent bike. You are not the only one to miss that hidden bolt, and I know people who have fallen because of the adjustable stem moving. Glad that didn't happen to you! Non-linear torque sensors are annoying, and that was one of my dislikes about the Electra Ponto Go: You use little pressure and there's not enough power, you pedal harder and it's too much power. I like big batteries, though with the way that one mounts (latch supporting the battery weight), I'd be concerned about small jumps. I like that little embellishment of the holes drilled around the stem too.

  • @skydancerforever
    @skydancerforever 9 месяцев назад +2

    On the stem problem, there is a screw on the under side facing up that you didn't see and tightened. Not the one that goes thru horizonal. Many people miss this screw and think the horizonal screw is the only one.

    I bought this bike because of your review. The difference between this to the aventure, nomad and alpha is the throttle, mine will go up to 30mph with a headwind, aventure and alpha you need to pedal to get to 28mph and nomad can only do 25mph and the only cadence sensor. Yes the torque sensor is twitchy on pas 1-3 , you might get some exercise if your always on low speeed. But on high speeds this is the bike to beat. IMO long range biking and light trails and gravel roads is the best place for this bike. Matt you are the best e-bike reviewer. I’m considering buying a wired freedom because of your reviews.

My Luna Cycle Z-1 was the same way but I was able to re-program it to have an excellent natural feel to it. Doesn't look like the Bafang rear hub motors are tunable. Might be reaching out to Mokwheel to see what gives. Other than that, it's a solid bike.

      @@TailHappyTVPerhaps stolen bikes get sold on eBay or any online marketplace, are just being used by thieves currently, or are put in a giveaway contest. I know that someone in another video said his bike got stolen and was being offered for sale on a marketplace, probably for cheap. Thieves sometimes like money and cheddar, I guess, so they choose to sell stolen bikes, probably for cheap even. There are always dangerous risks to stealing bikes, but I must argue that your chance of gaining a bike by stealing is way higher than your chance of gaining a bike by winning it in a giveaway contest.

    I got a clicking sound per pdeal revolution after only 15 miles into it's very first ride. After really tightening down on the pedals on the cranks and a few other areas at a bike shop, the click went away. A day later, and 6 miles into a ride, it completely lost pedal asist power, the speeed showed 0.0 mph even though I was moving manually pedalling the 87 lbs. beast. Using the throttle produced no forward movement, only a weird rumble noise in the rear-mounted motor. After a phone conversation with Tech Support, doing tests, and taking pics and a video to send, it was decided that the controller was shot. After reeiving the new one, I decided to have the same bike shop install the new controller. The screen now shows a 'Hall Error". I'm not sure what that is.
    Update: The new controller was installed, but the 'Hall Error' still showed up on the display and no motor movement. Mokwheel's Tech Support said the 'Hall Error' pointed to a bad motor. They said that they've never seen where both the controller and motor go bad. They're now sending a new motor, and after watching the video on how to replace it, I think the installation would be easier and quicker if a complete new rear wheel/tire/motor( as one complete set) were sent instead of just the motor. To just replace just the motor requires taking the entire rear wheel off anyway. Mokwheel's Tech Support has been great thus far, but I wonder if I got the one Basalt ST "lemon". A suggestion to Mokwheel: turn this bike into a mid-drive. No rear wheel/tire/motor to remove to fix the issue I'm encountering.

      you might want to consider a step thru e-bike with 20 inch wheels instead of 26 inch wheels. it will make the bike easier to get on and off and also more nimble for easier handling for a smaller individual. hope this helps!

    All cadence sensors are not created equal. The one on the Troxus Explorer is spectacular. What happens with a torque sensor when you're going so fast that there is no longer any pedal resistance? Nothing. Always carry hex wrenches. A fast heavy ebike really is better with dual suspension.

    What are your thoughts on using a 4.0 a or 5.0 a charger for the batteries on this bike? It comes with a 3.0 just wanted to charge up faster if that’s even possible?
    Thanks

    • @TailHappyTV
      @TailHappyTV  Год назад

      I don’t remember what I said on the battery, maybe it shows in the video I try to show all those details.
      Usually the cells are rated for a maximum charge rate, so I’m not sure I officially recommend that you use a four or five amp charger, if it were me, I’d probably give it a try. I’ve seen some bikes come with four amp chargers, but none of these cheaper ones have ever came with a five amp charger yet. You’ll be stressing the cells, a bit, charging them that fast, and it may reduce the overall lifespan of the battery, but probably the biggest risk is potentially causing a fire charging it too fast.

    I do not think that you should be using power tools for assembling.
    I know that when I bought my e bike home the kick stand was all loose and when I tried tightening it the thread were all stripped out.
    I had to go purchase longer bolts to go thru the assembly and put nut, that fixed the problem.
    I am sure that is how they destroyed the threads in the kick stand.
