I saw a meme once that became my headcannon. The first painel is Zoro training and thinking "I never see theshitty cook training so how can he be so strong?" Then cut to Sanji and Luffy in JoJo style:
-Sanji: "So you are approaching the fridge?"
-Luffy: "There is where the food is"

Fun Fact! One of the stories that Usopp told to Kaja (her rich friend back on his home island) was about a giant goldfish whose poops were as big as an island and BOOM! End of Little Garden and there is a giant goldfish. Dorry and Broggy also comment on how they stepped on one of those poops thinking it was an island, just like Usopp explained!
This brings the implication that in the Grand Line, anything you can imagine can be realized and it really makes me giddy cuz it makes the world look so much fantastical and exciting. It's almost like a kid making up critters and places, so joyful!

@@GavinReadsItAll It's an amazing stupid detail, extremely easy to miss, and if you miss it, everything is ok, the series is more than good enough without it, but when you catch it it immediately becomes better. One Piece is FULL of those things.
Next an example of what I mean. I avoided any spoilery details, but it won't happen for a long time, so you might not want to not read it. Again, I use just generic terms to describe the situation, you probably won't realize what I'm talking about even when you read the chapters, but I feel it's fair to warn you about it, in case you rather avoid it regardless. The moral is to keep your eyes peeled, because same as Usopp's lies, you have no idea what might come back later.
There is a character, that you will meet in like a million chapters, that you will recognize immediately because you are binging the series, but for weekly readers, their first and second appearance were 2.5 years apart, and they didn't look the same at all. It took me literally years to realize they were the same person, because I was re-reading their first appearance with their second appearance more cemented in my head. As far as I knew at that point, they were both amazing characters, and when they became one character in my head, they were even better, because everything that happened in the first appearance builds the second one so much more! And again, these 2 introductions were 2.5 years apart, and they didn't need to be the same character to work, but by being one and the same, they became an even better character. And the best part, Oda didn't come to show me "hey, remember this character? See what I did here? I'm amazing, am I not?" like many authors do. He just put the information there for me to find, or not, with no detriment to the series if I didn't, and that's fucking amazing if you ask me.

I love that Zoro and Sanji are both fiendishly strong, but they both bring different skillsets to the table.
Zoro is like a laser guided missile: Find Target - Engage in Battle - Destroy Target.

Ship names! Yes, the Straw Hats' ship is called the Going Merry.
In Japanese, ships (and other vehicles like trains or planes) may get a 号 kanji attached to the end of their names. It's read as Go(u), and individually can mean things like number, title, name or model, but to my understanding in this use it's more of a suffix that's not meant to have meaning read into it - it just indicates "this is the ship's name". I suppose you could consider it something similar to the S.S. you may see on ships.
So in Japanese, Merry is in full written as ゴーイング・メリー号, Gōingu Merī-gō, Going Merry-go. But it's really just the Going Merry part that should be retained for English. The Straw Hats also refer to her in short as Merī-gō, which again would best be localized for English as simply Merry.
The same thing is in play for most other named ships too (not that they're mentioned that often by name in the manga, mostly just in Oda's notes because _the madman has notes for everything_ and in some side material). For example, the Krieg Pirates' flagship was Dreadnaught Sabre (ドレッドノート・サーベル号, Doreddonōto Sāberu-gō), the cruise ship Sanji was apprenticing on before meeting Zeff was the Orbit (オービット号, Ōbitto-gō), and the Buggy Pirates' ship is the Big Top (ビッグトップ号, Biggu Toppu-gō).
One counter-example would be the Baratie which does not have that Kanji, showing that it's not in use for everything (though it _is_ also a very unusual ship).

Tons of Japanese nouns have a little add-on to them that signify what they are. A good example of this is "Fuji-san", which translates into "Mount Fuji" where "-san" is a type of indicator for "mountain". So, with ships, the add-on indicator is "-go", so in Japanese the Straw Hats' ship is the "Merry-go", in English this translates into just "Merry". "Going Merry" comes from the localization of the noun + indicator, so it's not a literal translation but just a goofy one that tries to incorporate the "-go" into the name itself.

You'll find a lot of people with Baratie on their favorites list. One of the greatest things about One Piece is how most things stay relevant through the whole story because it means past arcs can become better retroactively when you know more about the story as a whole. Your perspective on past arcs will probably change several times throughout this story. I know mine sure did.

As for watching the anime, I would definitely suggest you do it after you finished an arc or even a saga. Especially since the One Piece anime openings are notorious for their spoilers, which makes sense cause they expected most Japanese viewers had already read the manga and know what's gonna happen.

With you having bought the box sets in mind, if you want a more fun experience watching the anime I can strongly recommend trying to hunt down the older fansubs from the 2000s. They make the show come to life in very creative ways, that "officiall" subs legally can't, such as coloring in the text and timing it to the line delivery when characters make named attacks. It's a lot more fun!

Its so fun watching One Piece all over again and I'll definitely start reading the manga. My only issue with the anime is that the recaps are soooo long like around 10-15 mins if you add the opening, ending and the preview and every ep is like 24 mins so around 10 mins or more 💀

So far you have seen Buggy in the East Blue (which is no longer relevant at this point), Kobi and Helmeppo and now it should start Jango's cover story. When you see a cover story ending, you might want to review it as a whole because as you can see with Buggy's cover story, some of them become relevant for the main story later on.

It makes sense to give Little Garden a higher rating than Baratie even if you think Baratie is better, simply because the love of the reader for the series grows as the reader progress in the story. This way, what seems inconsistent on the surface can actually be explained.

Yeah here I could get behind you calling Mr3 a bad guy instead of an antagonist, because of his fascination with the terror on the faces of his wax victims. All the regular bounty hunters of Whiskey Peak though were just doing a job so I can't call them bad guys. I'm still not sure if I would go as far as evil or anything, they still seem to only target actual criminals(pirates). I would only call them evil when they start to target innocent people.
Definitely vote for reviewing the anime at times.
It was good you gave Mr3 his due as a dangerous opponent, lots of time people rate the characters on just their battle abilities and forget everything else.
Being surprised the giants would have been the type to have torched towns was odd to me. Not only are they pirates but they also seem pretty analogous with vikings, and what are vikings often depicted as doing, raiding. My thoughts anyway.

    • @GavinReadsItAll
      @GavinReadsItAll  Год назад +1

Yeah I don’t know why I was so shocked with the giants doing that, especially since it gave me some Jack and the Beanstalk vibes. I guess I just got too caught up in the story to realise the outer implications. And I loved Mr. 3’s charisma and his power is soooo good! I think you brought up a great point about villain vs. Antagonist and I’m going to pay more attention to the words I use to describe characters in the future, so thanks for bringing it up with me 😄

40:10 The name of the ship is Going Merry. In Japanese, it's written as Going Merry-go, but that -go in the end is not part of the name, it's something Japanese navy ships do, like the USA navy adds the USS at the beginning. Every ship in One Piece is named "something something something-go," making the "-go" not part of the actual name. For example, Buggy's ship is called the "Big Top" and in the JP manga it says "Big Top-go" (ビッグトップ号, biggu toppu-go). -go (号) is not part of the name
