Vapor chamber issue. Maybe not enough liquid in dry out or the design prevents liquid from circulating and cooling properly.
I have the Red Devil 7900XTX and it's brilliant. Runs cool and quiet
I can confirm. My 7900 XTX Red Devil does not hit 110°C. My Delta is around 20°K. Although i must admit i seem to have to ramp up my case fans a bit. As it hits 80°C GPU and 100°C under heavy load. It was better with open case with 68°C and 88°C. On the other hand i like it quiet and even 100°C hotspot seem not too bad.
@@Astravall yeah mine runs around 85 max. I have it undervolted and it's in a heavily ventilated Fractal case with all Noctua fans.
@@Astravall my 6900xt has been running around 95c for 2 years, of course, after a strong OC. And it works fine
My red devil never gets out of the 80c- 85c range. Junction temp. This is with an overclock and undervolt
Only some of the reference design cards have the issue.
Thank you for the testing!
No problem!
great info thanks for your work!
No problem!
AMD put all their eggs into traditional rasterized rendering while RTX cards are meant for hybrid rendering, and since Star Citizen does not support hybrid rendering yet there is really no need to compare AMD and Nvidia cards. For now AMD is the true king for Star Citizen both in CPUs and GPUs until that renderer finally receives some modern rendering upgrades.
Good job ! 😉👍
I have a Reference Sapphire 7900XTX and have done every test you have with SC (been playing since 2013) and the highest temps I have seen are 67 degs GPU CUR TEMP and 76 Degs on GPU JUNC TEMP. Max on MSFS2020 in ULTRA everything is 84 degs JUNC TEMP. I guess I am a lucky one. :-)
Was that at 4k? Looks like yours is fine!
Well , you got it wrong , its n o t AMDs design fault , its their suppliers fault . The Vapor Chamber itself is not even faulty , its simpel to less coolant filled in ( Water ) . Its not a design failure or a l l 7900XTX with AMD Design would have the Hotspot Problem . Its tricky , its just enough coolant filled in that on a Test Bench where the GPU is vertical mounted , the Vapor chamber often works as expected , if its horizontal ( which is normally the case ) , the GPU runs into the 110C Temp Limit
Your BMO had 666 in it. Demonic tunage. ;)
thank you for you videos! But I must say in this one the background music (more noise) was really hard to ignore or listen to
:P
Thanks for the feedback, yep I find it tricky to know how loud to put it!
I hope the mid range cards arent a mess. looking forward to parting with some money.
Got the reference card from AMD for 1125€. Had the same issue, my junctions would only hit 110°C with +15% PL. Ended up sending the card back for a refund and got myself the XFX Merc 310. Even at 450W, with 50% fan speed, I don't see above 90°C junction temps in an SFF case.
In time spy extreme, through all loops, my delta was pretty good, about 10ºc (Junction was at ~88ºc), 2600 mhz and the board power providing standard 347 W. And this represents my experience with most games I tried - except cyberpunk, which brings my delta to a sad 30ºc and a Junction of 100ºc (but then again, the game crashes when using recent updates, settings crash to desktop)
Not all cases will be the disgrace of immediate 110ºc, some will probably be like mine where you don't have trouble but you're not trully confortable with the future. Even people who got lucky in the silicon lottery will probably look a bit insecure
I will await AMD's reply to the situation, since I really liked the xtx, but I wish you luck in the exchange for the 4080!!
Sounds similar to me. I should try Cyberpunk, that's a good idea! That's a good way to describe it- I'm just not comfortable with the particular card going into the future, seems too close to the limit for me. Hopefully AMD will release a response soon.
M8, I was the one that suggested you to test out the new RX7000 GPUs in CPU bottleneck situation, I am really sorry that this is happening to you... Hope you get all this sorted out...
No worries! Hopefully I'll be able to get a refund! It's a pretty bizarre situation from AMD, hopefully they will get it sorted!
Warning these cards can reach critical mass faster than reactor 4 Chernobyl. Great video. Thx!
Yep pretty crazy situation!
I just watched @JayzTwoCents video on the reference cards and it looks like they do this temp thing when mounted horizontally but not vertically. As you suspected it seems to have something to do with the vapor chamber.
Jay had a new video about it yesterday and he talked about one of der8auer's videos disproving the mounting position hypothesis. Here is a link to der8auer's video: ruclips.net/video/26Lxydc-3K8/видео.html
If I ended up with one of those card, I'm not even sure I would send it back - I'd just see it as justification to water cool it. ;-)
It did cross my mind!
This is why I always went for Sapphire cards when buying AMD. As much as I'm always rooting for AMD to back-of-the-net every launch... I've been on the merry go round long enough to know to temper my expectations. Now if it was an AIB cooler or a water block then sure, the card will truly flourish I've no no doubt.
Yeah a water block might be the best option for me if I can't get a refund!
My amd card is a sapphire 7900 xtx and it still cooks at 110c junction unless you limit it to 2450 MHz
@@sandzibar The first drivers for the 7900XT and 7900XTX had high power consumption issues. If you haven't upgraded the drivers I would try that first. If that doesn't work you may want to contact Sapphire.
I just got the Sapphire reference card for 7900 xtx. Not by choice was just what I found in stock but it's working beautfully and junction temp isn't anything like what others posting so far. (80c is about max that i seen so far)
@@zengrath Every time Gamers Nexus does a review and teardown of a Sapphire gpu they have been impressed by the build quality and used it to contrast how other makers "do it wrong". Their reviews are why when I bought my RX6800 I only looked at the Sapphire gpus.
These cards only get hot when the fans are pointed down. If you vertical mount it, there's no problem. The vapour chamber is defective, check out DerBauer's latest videos :)

MY Red devil 7900xtx
over clocked 46gpu temp 75c junc temps 2959 MHz fams speed about 2200 speed.. in star citizen... 431watts power draw
That's more like it!
Picked up a 4090... Really working great. Seen over 440W used, no temp issues. Hope the cooling issue can get fixed on the xtx's, it seems pretty wide spread
Set a power curve up on that 4090.. I never see over 380w on my 4090 after.
@@njasicko bro how to undervolt 4090????
@@sajithsaji3606 Use MSI Afterburner and set up a custom curve for it. Lots of youtube videos out on how to do it.
@@sajithsaji3606 Aye Afterburner can do it. I use GPU tweak III (Asus) after watching Der8auer's video on the 4090. Still using Afterburner for monitoring but Tweak 3 was so easy to set a % power and fan target and save pre-sets.

Have you tried vertical orientation like Der Bauer? Curious if you can get lower temps the same way...
Also curious about inverted horizontal orientation which Der Bauer didn't test.
@@geerstyresoil3136 There is no need to test 1 110 156 444 568 different orientations. He already found that vapor chamber design is defective
@@lamikal2515 why do some cards work fine then if vapor chamber is considered defective? many have only 20 degree delta and do not have hotspot throttle issue. Der Bauer suggests it's a manufacturing error (insufficient water) not a design error per se.
@geerstyresoil3136 I actually already had it vertical first (easier to swap out GPU's) and then saw the Der Bauer video so tested horizontal! I didn't find much of a difference between the two in my scenario.
If you can't get a refund or RMA maybe EK will make a waterblock for the reference models and try put that on and testing.
I've just sent it back this morning, so hopefully will have a refund soon!
Your card is faulty, you need to RMA it. The delta between junction and card temperature shouldn't be more than 20C
Yep it's on the way back right now!
Been Honest I watched the Hardware unboxed review the fact he had problems with drivers / crashes and then the Vulcan testing show the Nvidia was way better .
So I wish you all the luck in getting a RTS4080 and will see the if they are the same or which one is better for SC. shame that he Vulcan isnt fully out and working to see the difference.
Yeah its a shame Vulcan is not ready- it would've been very interesting to test!
Should try running rage mode. I found Star citizen gives decent FPS increase when using Rage.
I just got the MSI 7900 xtx a few months ago. I usually have to turn down settings cause it can get well over 90c, only when ray-tracing though. Id really like to find a hotspot temp fix. My 7800x3d can get well over 80c sometimes too but I'm using an air cooler so that's probably why.
I don't understand why this bord is still in your hands!?
You have 30c between package and hotspot, it is nuts!
Forget about every other function like undervolting and overclocking, you are working on a broken device therefore,
return it asap and get the Nitro, Pulse or the Devil.
I hope you can return it because the recall might take a while to happen.
It's on it's way back as we speak- should be getting a refund asap!
Personally I have never had any luck with AMD graphics drivers. As such I have stuck to NVIDIA, I figured I'd try a 6800xt and I had to re-install the graphics drivers an average of every two weeks. A lot of people I know swear by Radion cards, I just keep getting the bunk ones. I currently own a 4080, and while it's not the monster that the 4090 is I'm happy with it for SC.
The most important thing to do when switching from Nvidia to AMD is either use DDU to wipe the Nvidia drivers or do a clean Windows install. I had similar problems when i switched from a 1060 to an AMD card. the Nvidia uninstaller left files and traces on the system and caused instabilities (i have a feeling that is deliberate -.- ) ... after DDUing the Nvidia remains and reinstalling the AMD drivers everything was fine.
Your card has bad vapor chamber, any delta between GPU and hotspot 20c or more is symptom of the issue.
I have a 7900xtx reference unopened in the box right now. I can literally put together my 4k gaming build, but it's on hold as I debate with myself if I want to take it out of the box, and then argue with AMD over the heat (IF I have the problem). The alternative would be to RMA it in the unopened box (thereby at least bypassing the argument with AMD). Of course, then I'd have to buy the 4080 *cough*, or the 4090. I have a 5120x1440 display and I was really hoping to drive it with this card. Out of curiosity, how is yours mounted? I at least have a HYTE Y60 to mount it in, and it seems like the heat issue is "less" often with a vertical mount. As far as overclocking... look for Ancient Gameplays channel as he has an "excellent" video on undervolting / performance. I'm just bummed with how all this worked out.
The Ancient Gameplays video was actually my starting point for the custom overclock! I think in your case I would just leave it in the box and not take the risk. Maybe look at a non reference model if you don't want to go Nvidia.
@@tenpoundfortytwo I appreciate the advice, and I really think you are right. I've been wringing my hands over it for a few days. I think I'll just get a hold of Digital River and get the RMA started. If not anything, I'll tell them exactly why I am sending it back. If they would have acknowledged it, and perhaps worked with an AIB distributor to create a "process" to fix it, I'd do it, but waiting is the enemy of time right now. So back it goes (lol, I was SO close to 4k), hahahah :)
@@SpaceShortsYT JayzTwoCents did a video about der8auer's video troubleshooting the overheating. der8auer was able to debunk the mounting position hypothesis. His conclusion was that there is something wrong with the vapor chamber on the reference design. One other commenter said they had really good outcome with a Sapphire 7900XTX. Another commenter said they had good luck with a PowerColor Red Devil 7900XTX. You probably couldn't go wrong with a ASUS model either. Anyway, here is a link to der8auer's video: ruclips.net/video/26Lxydc-3K8/видео.html
sadly AMD and ATI had the problem with reference cards way to long. It seems also that not all cards are affected by it and therefore is a problem on the manufacturing side. Meaning that the engineers did anything right.
I had to many problems with the reference design that I never would by it other then the NV reference.
Still unsure what card I want to get. Prices for the the RX 7900 XTX is around 1400€ or more for big custom coolers right now. The problem here is that the 4080 is cheaper , even custom designs is like 1333€ and the 4080 should be mostly on the same level as the 7900 xtx.
Question is how much difference will it make in SC
Probably very little difference in SC right now unless you are playing at 4K or have the volumetric clouds set to the higher settings.
@@The_Opinion_of_Matt yeah I only want to improve 4K performance because my 6800xt can’t get stable 60fps. I also have driver issues and can’t use the recent one. Mine is 8months old because anything else will Crash SC
Would you consider getting an AIB model of the XTX?
If you found one at a good price then yeah, I think the AIB models would be great option. But as the price goes up then the 4080 founders edition starts to look more appealing in my opinion (review coming today).
SOME of the cards have this issue. Mine doesn't have this issue at all, fortunately. But yeah, for whoever does have the issue, it's significant.
Glad to hear yours is OK! What sorts of temps are you getting?
@@tenpoundfortytwo It's never even hit 100° junction under stress testing, and the delta hasn't been very extreme.
@@LucidStrike even if you overclock or up the power limit? Sounds like yours is working as it should.
@@tenpoundfortytwo Tbf, I haven't overclocked. I raised the power limit and set the core to 2400 / 2500. Sweet spot for performance-per-watt and still faster than stock.
If I wanted to straight up overclock, I probably wouldn't have bought a reference card that uses nearly all the power budget at stock.
By the way… the 4080 will be replaced soon for a super and Ti versions.
4080 is 10000cores, 4090 is 16000, so the 4080 really should be a 4070.
4090 is the best option, there will be a titan or Ti with 18000cores and better memory but you are at the risk of overpaid like the 3090ti buyers.
I just watched a video from Ancient Gameplays that mentioned people are saying they fixed the issue using a different HDMI cable, believe it or not. Curious to see if it helps with your card... Watch the video and maybe try it out, for science, i guess.
I'll have a look, thanks!
i just buy a 13700KF with 32GB or DDR5 ram. I have a basical 3060, i just play in 1080P, should this setup will be great for SC ? I hesitate to go to a 3070 ti OC... but for 1080p i'm not sure if its necessary, whats your opinion ?
I would think that the 3060 should be fine for 1080p
@@tenpoundfortytwo i think too, a TI at least ;) I heard GPU under 3070 could botlleneck with high end CPU, i dont know the reallity.
Nice Video, i'm thinking about upgrading my 2080ti with a 7900xtx from Gigabyte ( avoiding the 110° risk in getting a bad gpu). Currently running an i9 9900k, curious if i'll get more Performance in Star Citizen with that setup.
I think the 9900k could be a real bottleneck in certain areas of the game (cities etc). What resolution do you play at?
@@tenpoundfortytwo at the moment at 2k (1440p) resolution.
For 1440p I'd say the 7900xtx is overkill (but obviously would last you a long time into the future and give you the option of 4k down the line). For Star Citizen specifically, you might be better off moving to a new motherboard and cpu. The new x3d chips from amd might be a better use of your money!
I'm wondering what this could look like with liquid cooling. I'm planning on getting a 7900 xtx, but I want to slap a water block on it with at least a 360mm Radiator.
Yeah watercooling seems like it would be a good option for these!
I hope you can get a refund. I got a Gigabyte 4080 OC and no issues, runs cool and quiet and reacts well to a small extra OC. A good improvement over my previous EVGA 3090 Hybrid. I’m looking forward to the new gaming CPUs. I wonder if they will bring enough performance improvement in SC to be worth the full upgrade to AM5.
Run 400w all day every day and never see over 80. Weird. (Ref card here)
Thanks for the info- I had wondered if all the reference cards struggled at 400w- good to know that they should be able to handle it!
Will you be doing a review for the new AMD 7950x3d chips that got announced yesterday?
I'll be reviewing the 7800x3d- I've been sticking to the 8 core cpus recently. It should give a good idea of how the 7900x3d and 7950x3d perform though.
@@tenpoundfortytwo Nice. Looking forward to it!
7000 GPU's thermal throttle quickly as temps get up which go up very fast as power consumption increase. If you could actually cool the silicon effectively (AIB Products) you get decently higher GHz out of the product...It's just unfortunately how skiddish the silicon behaviour is.
That's too bad that your card has cooling issues mate! Here's to hoping that AMD works it out, and especially that you get your refund!
I am lucky i guess. my new 7900xtx I been playing latest games maxed out,, ray tracing and all, and i'm only seeing 50-60c and not even 100% utilization as well unless I run like a bunch marking program in most games. EDIT: just booted up timespy benchmark, 65c and 80 junc temp. using saphhire 7900 xtx reference card. Seems ok to me unless this is only something that happens in long term sessions or something. People with this issue, does it happen immediately or over a long session? I haven't played any games for super long with this new PC just yet.
In theory it should happen pretty quickly if your card is affected. Have you tried increasing the power slider? In theory the card should still be able to keep temps under control, so shouldn't struggle at 400w- but mine can't handle the extra power.
@@tenpoundfortytwo No I haven't touched OC at all manually on the GPU. I see absolutely no reason to. Every game I've through at on max settings and even raytracing is running like a dream. Even Gothem Knights that everyone says runs like crap seems to have no issues with my card, although it's not like 120fps like many of other games it's still rock solid usually 90+ fps. Spider-man remastered for example has been pretty much locked at 120fps ultra wide 1440p max setting and raytracing and looks incredible. I booted up games lke death stranding. A plague tale, and a few others and so far it's running great. I usually don't experiment with OC'ing until i've had it for a little while. I only turned on the AMD's version of XMP profiles in bios and set auto over clocking for now with Asus's AI over clocking which I am not sure over clocks my GPU or not, I don't think it does. I have it on an AM5 system with an 7700x cpu on this pc i just built. Freaking insane so far. my CPU utilization been around like 2-3% in games, just silly. my GPU in many games around 60% utilization which at first had me worried it was bottle necking but then realized it's just hitting vysnc 120fps limit or something as some games will push it to 100% as well as benchmarking programs. I haven't actually tried seeing how high frames will go if i turn vsync off yet, lol. My monitor is 175 hz.
Amazing video, and kind of a lifesaver. I’ll wait until AMD fixes it
Yep I think waiting on some communication from AMD is a good shout.
I hope you can get your hands on a 4080.

Change this GPU pls! Memory junction above 90% it’s crazy. I’ve a 4090 and never get over 80c in junction. Can’t believe the behavior of this card after so many adjustment even under volting. AMD must fix it soon.. I wonder what’s the memory junction temp of an XTX AIB
Yep I've returned and currently testing a 4080.

- yet I did some foolish "nowhere in space" test, searching for maximum frames pr sec ( still all settings on max ) I managed to spot 290FPS - Iam not even kidding.
But, I will stil have to travel to orison to compare the rx6800xt with the rx7900xtx on same location on "various" clouds settings !

You should mount your gpu vertical (turn your case). See if temps change.

@@caldeio Gamers Nexus found that the reason for the melted power cables on the RTX4000 series had nothing to do with the cable and was actually user error. The cable wasn't being pushed all the way into the connector on the graphics cards. Now it is actually recommended to push the cable into the GPU before installing the GPU into the motherboard. @@The_Opinion_of_Matt For me, the biggest flaw of the 12VHPWR connector is the lack of feedback regarding it's plugging :
Firstly, you need far more force than you would consider adequate to plug it in.
Secondly, when it's plugged, the sound feedback is should be way louder. When you plug a PCI-E plug to your GPU, it makes a very noticeable click, assuring the user that the cable is fully secured.

I can spoil you this already, a bigger fatter GPU is not going to solve the performance issues we all have with Star Citizen.
As an example: I have a 3080 and had a 3060 before it, the rest of my PC has not changed and performance in Star Citizen is exactly the same between the two GPU's.
Depends on resolution, at 4k every little helps!
As an AMD fanboy, this is depressing. They basically lied and failed to deliver on their claims. Once again Nvidia goes unchecked and value plummets.
Yep it's really disappointing. They had such a great opportunity to grab market share this gen but this is really going to hurt them.
um 1 you need to manually adjust fans for overclocking they have zero rpm on on default which results in high temps it is not running at 100 percent that would change your temps also may want to check thermal pads and thermal paste application you are literally at a 6900xt overclock performance you really need to manually adjust the fans hate to say it but your overclocking that requires fans at around 80 percent by 60 c and 100 percent by 70 c you should never pass 70 c
