  • Swapped my Quadlock for a Peak Design phone mount on my TTR. Both are great mounts, but I am liking Peak's slimmer profile with the dampener.

    Hi Tim, thank you very much for your video as I was desperately looking for some information about the dampener itself compared to the Quad Lock one. Could you please tell more in detail what the Peak Design guys said about it when you met them? How exactly should it be better vs the Quad Lock one? Did they say something about their dampening technology? QL provides a lot of information about their development and technology process but PD unfortunately not which makes me very hesitant to buying one. Thanks a lot!

    • @tims-garage
      @tims-garage  2 года назад +1

      Honestly, I wouldn't say that the PD one is any better than the QL one. It's just that PD designed theirs better because they came after QL. They had the second mover advantage that allow them to make a more slim line design. As far as the functionality on the dampener itself, I would say it's equal. I do like the magnetic clip-in and out on the PD one though. I think both are very great phone mounts.

      I'm not sure if a non backer can read the updates, but during Peak Designs Kickstarter for Mobile they put out tons of interesting information on the development process. So maybe look for their project page to check. I backed the project based on the quality of their camera gear I already owned, and honestly I think that, although a bit expensive, this is one of the best systems out there. And they are still adding to the lineup.

    • @maxm50
      @maxm50 Год назад +6

      @@vasekdinha Hey Viet! I'm the engineer at PD that designed this mount and the vibration dampener integrated into it. Quadlock makes a fine dampener but it had three major flaws that I wanted to avoid in my development: It's huge, it's ugly, and it's REALLY loose right around the neutral balance point of the phone, which leads to a lot of "flopping about" while you're riding over even very smooth roads. If I had to summarize the differences between the PD dampener and the Quadlock dampener, I would say the main difference is that the PD dampener solves those 3 problems.
      Without going into too much nerdy detail or giving away all our secret sauce, we were able to achieve that via a few key ingredients:
      1) Integrating the dampener into the mount instead of making it a separate add on (gives us the ability to make it smaller, sleeker, and prettier)
      2) Using premium materials - anodized aluminum vs. injection molded plastic (I hate plastic on my moto and avoid it unless absolutely necessary)
      3) I had absolutely nothing else to do for 2 years of pandemic lockdown other than work on this dampener development (ok a bit of a joke, but you get the point... pouring a ton of energy into this thing kept me sane)
      We tested the snot out of this thing - a ton of miles by yours truly to get through 17 initial prototype designs, then instrumented lab testing at a professional test lab, then 135,000 miles traveled by 79 beta testers around the world (hello to any of y'all that read this!!). We scaled the testing as the development progressed. I'm happy to say that it's performing EXTREMELY well out in the wild.
      Hope this helps - feel free to ask my any questions!

      @@maxm50 Hi Max! First, thank you for your reply which I truly appreciate. However, since my first comment here, I have bought and still own a Motorcycle Stem Mount and also a 1" Ball Adapter which got released like 2 weeks after my Stem Mount's purchase (so unlucky lol). Back in Czech Republic where I am from I used the Stem Mount on my 2001 Suzuki GFS 600. When turning on the camera on my iPhone 12 Pro while riding my motorcycle, I could clearly see that the footage is not stable at all and the iPhone's camera system is trying to balance the vibrations. The footage got almost no vibrations on wide lens however it did have mid vibrations on regular lens and a looot of vibrations on tele photo lens. When I reached my friend who uses a Quad lock system, he didn't have any visible vibrations while riding his motorcycle like I had.
      Now I'm in Vietnam, traveling for next few months and using the 1" Ball Adapter. Honestly, the vibrations are even worse compare to the Stem Mount. Even on iPhone's wide lens while riding off road I have visible vibrations already and overall I'm just not confident enough that it is safe to use my iPhone with this PD system. Every ride I'm just frightened that my camera system will got broken and use the holder only when really needed... I'm a professional traveller and content creator so to protect my phone is essential. I've been using PD products for years for my Canon DSLR camera systems but this seems to be more tricky this time.
      I've uploaded some test videos from yesterday here so you can check: drive.google.com/drive/folders/17KGECl4i010rK6mTJwReO-JuOx6b8rXz?usp=sharing
      Could you please let me know your opinion on this, Max? Thanks!
