DmC Devil May Cry was actually the first game to introduce the soundtrack changing based on your style ranking. It was a much simpler system where once you reached S rank the lyrics of the song kicked in, but DMC 5 expanded on it.

DmC was responsible for alot of things in DMC5 like making Vergils DT a doppelganger that only uses the base Yamato while following your inputs, the summoned sword tags for the Darkslayer styles telleports and the Just Release mechanic for the Yamato's Judgement Cut.
There was also smaller things like enemy ai behaviours and design theories, that being that alot of them have specific reactions to specific attacks and the Riots' behaviour and attack pattern design is very similar to the Masked Ninja enemies right down to the point that they'll disappear and start attacking again after a certain amount of hits have been dealt.

@@jurtheorc8117 I'm not aware of the exact source, but I would hazard a guess that it was probably in the development interviews and interviews about the developer's feelings regarding DMC: Devil May Cry and the subsequent entry DMC 5. They mentioned that they were excited to work on a second DMC: Devil May Cry game, but that never happened, so they basically took a load of things they liked about that, what they planned for its sequel, and applied it to DMC 5. That's probably one of the big reasons DMC 5 has the aesthetic it has, compared to previous games, including Nero's new look.

Nice to see a DMC fan giving the reboot a fair shake. It's not a bad game at all and with the improvements made in the PS4 version it's in my top 3 DMC games just behind 5 and 3. Also, it easily has the best level design in the whole series and best platforming too.

    • @aerdramonn
      @aerdramonn 8 месяцев назад +8

Even though in general I agree that reboot isn't bad as an action game (especially outside of the series) I have to make some remarks.
      1. I played it on release and it was horrible, due to "beat red monsters with red weapon, blue with blue or you get stunned", "you can spam any 1 button to get S rank and it will not drop after being hit", etc. From what I've heard about patches and updates - seems like they've made it better afterwards but it was late for me.
      2. Level design is very subjective. Personally I hate limbo cause it feels cheap by making the whole screen messy while in other games of the series you can wonder around and inspect gothic surroundings and such. Comparatively it takes nearly no skill to shuffle textures into a mess instead of creating something thoughtful. Saying that as an artist myself.
      3. Actually it has worst platforming. DMC is not about platforming which was all over the place in reboot and it was always pointless. You have a couple places with platforming in each game of the series but they are rare and made as puzzles of some sort. Like jumping on rotating cubes in DMC3. Platforming in reboot is just a braindead spider-man simulator where you basically cannot fail and the only thing they are doing - prolonging the playtime of a slasher via non-combat activities.
      4. Real achievement of reboot in comparison with other games in a series - no back tracking and short but unique questline for Vergil. That was really refreshing however no one ever mentioned it in my memory among people who liked reboot for whatever reasons.
Just wanted to say that there are pros and cons, but none of them are universally "easily the best"

You're definitely not alone there. I do enjoy it, but I just like the OG series more. It's funny that you mention that first trailer because I was always curious about how that story / style would have panned out if they fully committed to it.

    • @spartan3924
      @spartan3924 8 месяцев назад +1

I think the thing was always the gameplay was pretty good but everything else around it was bad, also remember the Reboot game only had auto lock on, no manual, the blue and red coloured enemies would bounce you off them if you used anything that didn't match the colour, and the style ranking wasn't based on variety it was pure damage so you could just spam the same heavy axe move to get SSS, all that on the launch version of the game, it was only the updated version later that changed that stuff that made the gameplay good, so if you pair that with everything else you can see why people hated it and didn't want to go back after an update.
I also wish they had stuck with the original trailer version of the aesthetics, it would make sense for grungy depressed punk rock Dante to be like that as a teen, they could have actually fit it into the canon like that with him not knowing about the corruption around him and slowly figuring out his powers and the importance of stopping the other demons, it could have been really cool, but they went too far in a different direction, reminder, the director of that reboot said Dante was a gay cowboy, and said he's not cool, then showed a picture of what he thought was cool, and it was a picture of the director smoking wearing a punk jacket trying to look cool, he then told the team to design Dante after that.
I might be wrong but I think they had a different director come in to finish off the project because that guy wasn't doing good enough too, so even the good parts of the game could be attributed to someone else.

Loved the Angel and demon weapons/enemies. Loved the bosses. Loved the fact you could pick different skins. It's overall just a super solid game. I wish they continued with a part 2.
I read the developers were already busy with making the first lvl of part 2 which continues where Dmc ends. Dante beated Virgil and is now protecting the earth from demons. Then after beating the first lvl, Dante sees this huge Angel warrior at the horizon and a boss battle starts.
They wanted to focus more on the Angel warriors in part 2, which sounds awesome to me. But somehow they didn't get the "okay" to make the game. Major downer. Truly loved Dmc.

It's a pretty good game even without the Definitive Edition (DE is definitely leagues above the base game but I stand by my point). Heck alot of DMC5 has DmC inspiration written all over it so to say it did nothing right like all the irrational haters claim is bogus.
Good games are allowed to have flaws that you wished didn't exist, heck, all other DMC games are examples of that.

You wouldn't believe this, but I'm in the same camp as you regarding the DMC: Devil May Cry. I just liked the game, but it's really not the best one in the series, not even close. If we're taking only the mainline games, it's 3, 5, 4, 1, 2 for me. The reboot is just a more edgy take on the series, it has its moments.

as an OG fan of the series playing every single game and having watched the anime I want to state that each game has unique charms that make them epic on their own. Personally, I will always hail 3 as possibly the best in the entire series - it was just such an amazing game it really set the standard for what a DMC game should be like - a good mix of puzzle solving and badass action along with some comedy bits. I have a special love for every game in the series, but if I had to pick favorites top 3 are probably DMC 3, DmC: Devil May Cry, and DMC 1 - in that order.

Devil May Cry 2 isn't a great game on its own when compared to 1 or 3, but what it works really well as is a starter game. I actually recommend DMC 2 as someone's intro to melee action games because of how relaxed its difficulty is, then graduate them to 1. I would never suggest something like Ninja Gaiden Sigma as their first action game due to how demanding even the normal difficulty is.
And it works. A few friends have played 2, didn't really like it, but then they go into 1, feel the noticeable step up in difficulty, and end up liking 2 more because it allowed them to dip their toes in before diving headfirst into harder games.

kinda rare to see an unbiased and honest opinion on DmC. Though I disagree that it’s good because of connection to the original series. I feel like if it was an independent project, it would’ve had much more to it, as the story was very very very limited with the canon of original series. Also the fact the outrage of changing everything really shot down any chance of continuation
I think it had more chances and more opportunities if it wasn’t a byproduct of DMC series. The story could’ve had a better flow instead of having a worse version of an existing plot with few baits and switches and deus ex machinas sprinkled just to move the plot the way they need and not the way they want. Also it wouldn’t have sparked such shitstorm and had a chance for sequel

    4. Dmc 1 (Awesome atmosphere, solid music and bosses, combat is slow and kinda clunky tho)

"That aint my Dante" and the story was pretty cringe BUT the gameplay and level design was fucking awesome. If you people think 5 is so amazing, then read this
    _DMC5 story:_
-Cheap, safe, not very thought-through, fanservice.
And not much else besides that.
    _DMC5 art direction:_
-Most monotone and bland in the entire series. For both: monsters and stages.
Also, LACKS gothic architecture the series are known for. YES, even DmC had that!
    _DMC5 in-between activities:_
    -Little to zero.
Just walking through empty big stages with pathetic platforming segments that might as well not be in there.
    _Stage variety:_
-Pick city ruins, basic underground areas or an extremely repetitive Demon-Tree-Whatever-That-Was-That-Lasted-For-Half-of-The-Game.
    _Now, the combat:_
    1. You HAVE to play as freakin V for multiple stages.
    2. Devil Bringer is ass when you don't know what enemies you can expect and when, because you can't change your prosthetic arm on the fly; you have to sacrifice it each time you want to change it, which removes freedom in combat.
    3. YET AGAIN, you have to play lots of content 1st to be able to buy and get cool combos and weapons.
Meanwhile, you can do cool stuff in DmC since Stage 2 or 3.
    4. Skill ceiling is lower than in 4.
    5. It's significantly slower than prequels.
    PS:
There are very few action scenes in the cutscenes. That's lame, because DMC3 and 4 fights during them were legendary.

Always got the feeling that Virgil in the reboot was more like how people wanted him to be. You know nicer and wanting to be Dante's brother loves him over humanity and the girl that he supposed to be mentoring Kat I think her name is. I mean it's been a while but I like the personal feeling of them going home relating to their mother and trying to figure out what happened. I like the painting and how it helps them relate and Virgil had admitted that he had found his power there and hope that Dante could too that's why we could focus more on Dante's reaction to the estate.. but I would have liked to have a playthroughs where vrgil went there too kind of annoys me. I played the reboot first before anything else plus I did not know that the OG game was based on resident evil. So yeah I'm not adverse to liking the OG over most of the others but I got to say I got a special place for the reboot❤🎉

Scythes in general are oddly popular in the Character Action/Hack-and-Slash/whatever genre. Honestly, they get a *lot* more attention than the likes of axes and maces.
      To give a list:
      - Darksiders has the scythe. Simple as that, the scythe. Wide sweeping attacks with spinny movements. Secondary weapon that you don't ever actually have to buy.
      - Darksiders 2 has Death as the playable character, so you know he wields scythes. Interestingly, he wields a *pair* of short scythes for very rapid attacks.
The shafts can also combine together during some combo routes to form a polearm with a straight blade on one end and a scythe head on the other.
(His skill in secondary weapons consists of either Heavy or Light side weaponry, such as Maces, Axes, Hammers and Glaives for the former, and Gauntlets, Bucklers, Armblades and Claws for the latter, all with their unique charge attacks)
      Death's awesome.
      - Dante's Inferno has Death's Scythe (different take on it), which has a slight transformative ability in becoming flexible, extensive, and ratcheting the blade 90 degrees to become more like a polearm in shape. It is one of the main two weapons in the entire game.
      - Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death. The main weapon, the Fangs of Kukúlkan, are a transformative assembly of sticks and three fang-like blades that in their Fangs form are a double-ended scythe, with the shaft being a slight recurve and the lower end having two blades. (the three other forms are a whip, blade tonfas, and a hammer)
      - Knight's Contract has the Scythe of Witch's Bane. It's probably got the most elaborate scythe shaft of all character action protagonists, and yet again a blade that can turn around:
Folded-up, which makes it easier to carry and you can see the blade is about as long as the shaft,
Extended out, which makes it a more recognizable scythe shape AND the blade has a spiked warhammer head on the other end,
And extended forward, to make it more like a sword with a long handle or polearm.
      - Bayonetta has Chernobog. It's like if a modern Dutch windmill went to Hot Topic.
Instead of one blade, there are three blades right next to each other on the head, giving the impression of a three-fingered long-nailed claw, and these can fully spin around. It's got a perpendicular handle like Osiris from DMC: Devil May Cry for tonfa-like movements.
      - Ninja Gaiden has the Eclipse Scythe. Blade is also almost as long as the shaft and can fould up. One of the slower weapons but also very heavy damage. I believe it's got some grab attacks as well.
      - And Nevan from DMC3. Or at least, *kind* of. It's an electric guitar with a blade that can fold out, but in practice it's an unusual weapon that can summon electrified lightning bats and not used generally like all these other characters use a scythe.

You said you were introduced to Dante because of Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3?
For me, it was the other way around. I grew up with Devil May Cry 3 definitive edition. I was so inexperienced, when I got the "easy mode" I was like "OH thank God!" Lol
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom introduced me to Deadpool though. Reintroduced me to Viewtiful Joe, Okami, and Phoenix Wright. Such a cool ass fighting game.
I am pleasently surprised with how much love the DMC community has received and continues to receive. They got an anime, at least 4 solid main games, and several neat spinoffs. Even if douchebag Dante sucks, that game was fun as hell.
I gotta say. Devil May Cry 3 and Third Strike are wonderful additions to my collection of difficult but fun games. PS2 has a lot of those. Gamecube, Sega Genesis. We don't get a lot of systems like these no more, but there's always Pizza Tower and Hi Fi Rush.

Gameplay-wise, closest thing to a sequel to DMC: Devil May Cry i can think of is Soulstice. Fun game, got its rough parts for sure but for a game with a production level similar to let's say the first Darksiders there is a lot of clear attention put into the game.
Plus some influence from DMC: DmC with the dial combos, overlapping button inputs for weapons that still have subtle differences, and the color coding mechanism, BUT it's tied to casting up a Red or Blue forcefield instead.
So instead of only able to use blue weapons on blue enemies, you can use *any* weapon on *any* enemy.
There's around seven weapons in total, a mix between a Special Meter and Style meter that allows for unique combo string finishers depending on the weapon, multiple Special Forms, and just over twenty enemy types that can have fairly extensive movesets.
Some enemies can be a bit annoying and as for other downsides, there's a number of complaints on the camera as well as the story dragging out/being quite backloaded on actual hype moments.
Hope this made you curious and that you may try it for yourself! The devs want to continue on with the story, and i hope that spreading word on it will help them achieve the potential they carry.

Personally would have ranked DMC2 above DMCDMC because I actually had more fun with DMC2 than DMCDMC (i couldnt even finish it) but not many would agree

I'm nicely surprised you didn't put DmC: Devil May Cry as "Into the void". It is a solid game, and if it wasn't for the existence of the other games, everyone would've loved it. People are just mad you don't get long-white-hair-cool-as-fuck Dante.

I just bought the reboot a couple days ago(the original. Not the definitive edition) and I can say I'm having a blast. I will admit not being able to manually lock on was a bit strange at first but I'd say it was pretty good.

@@soulcyclone360 I'd agree with you if it wasn't just a carbon copy of the other games with inferior characters. They shit on the others like Dante's white hair and instead of sticking to their own thing they make Vergil randomly evil and have Dante follow the same arc from 3 even ending with the white hair they mocked. The game is great but the story is an eye roll. Kinda wish we got the chain smoker crack Dante from the OG trailers, but that's on capcom not ninja theory. 2 is really the only bad main game both story and gameplay wise to the point capcom actively avoid it as much as possible. And for making sparda a bitch in chains the reboot automatically drops a point. how they gonna do the OG so dirty like that

@@Mr-Geist-Bong let me break down my reasoning for you:
-DMC1: Has a strong start but beyond the halfway point it becomes a jumbled mess of disconnected plot points, Dante barely reacts to the big reveal that Vergil was Nelo Angelo and that he had just killed him, Trish's betrayal, supposed death, and redemption is three separate heel turns with no build up or explanation, Dantes reasoning for why he does anything for Trish (that being that he looks like his mother) is both a flawed and unexplored plot point, the ending of the game in general sounds like three different people had an idea for what should happen but couldn't agree with which choice to go with and just put them all in at the last minute because the assets and animation had already been done by that point, the final scene of them flying away in the plane has got to be one of the biggest jokes of the series since it has no build up, nothing about Dantes character up until this point implies that this is normal for him to say what he says which makes it feel forced in every sense of the word, would've been better if he had just stayed quite the whole time instead of trying to make him a super deep philosopher when nothing had built him up to that throughout the whole game.
Overall, people only give this game's story any credit because it was the first game of the series, it gave us the main character and set up how flashy said main character is but that's it, you likely remember the Alastor scene way more than anything the game tried to tell you about the story.
DMC2: anything I say about this game feels like bullying because it's a blatantly unfinished product with a team that barley knew what to do with it before Hideaki Itsuno came in at the last minute to atleast make it presentable before its release. It had a story but it just had no interest in telling it in the game, Lucia is a carbon copy of Trish but with even less motivation to do anything and Dante went from being an inconsistent but forgivable level of seriousness from the first game to having nothing to say at all in the second one. The only thing DMC2 has going for it is Dantes drip and that it had some cool ideas for Dantes moves that would be explored better in the following games.
DMC3: is the best story of the series hands down, but there is one issue that no one really brings up. People love to say that DmC is bad for stuff just happening without much build up and that Dantes turn to being a good guy just sort of happens or that Vergils whole monologue for why he'll fight Dante should have had more build up, but DMC3 Dante has that exact same problem, he goes from an goofy, lone wolf, punk to a hero that fights for humanity because it's the right thing to do at the very end of the game with next to no build up, it's only implied at the end of the game that he had undergone any growth from the start at all. We don't get any internal monologue, he doesn't say anything to Lady or Vergil about why he's fighting outside of his sibling rivalry, he rejected the idea of having a father right up until his boss fight with Lady where he credits her for his change of heart, something that was barely eluded to before that point and definitely never verbalised by Dante himself who had spent the entire game fighting for the sake of getting even with Vergil. It's a good game with an amazing story but Dantes heel turn to a hero is even less built up to than DmC Vergils heel turn into a villain since we at least got some hints as to how he really thought about humans earlier in the game.
DMC4: is way to spread out and underdeveloped story wise that it give DMC2 a run for its money with how much it doesn't seem to care about much of anything. If you played the game and watched the cut-scenes you likely know what I'm talking about.
DMC5: has one of the most cohesive stories of the franchise with only a few hiccups, the game expects us to think that the mystery behind V's existence is a an actual mystery beyond the forth mission and Nero's power of friendship moment at the end of the game could have been leagues better than what it was but was still a fun moment and was a great spectacle to cap off the game.
Of all five mainline games only two have a good story, that's over half the games of the og franchise which is accurate to my first comment.
And I want to mention that I'm not including any of the Mangas or graphic novels in the discussion because I specified the story of the "games" in the previous comment. A games story shouldn't need required reading from an outside source to be cohesive.

You gave DMC4 a really hard time for not having enough content to support the complex combat of the two playable characters. Then you gave DMC5 a pass even though the combat is even more complex, and the characters have even fewer playable missions each. It is criminal that the SE didn’t unlock all characters on all missions. It would have taken 10 minutes of dev time to triple the content in the game.

yea, I'm kinda surprised of NOT criticisms of 5 when the character models are just... bad, Dante and Vergil don't even share the same face yet they're IDENTICAL twins, there are actually two or three missions that each character shares (just b/c it's not as much as DMC4, it's still there), the missions inside of the Qliphoth all look the same w/ that terrible environment, and the monetization of red orbs to get skills that used to just be a mechanic in the game before (enemy step)

I’ll just gonna say. I don’t care if POC is for casual. But in my eyes, even for a casuals. Learn to play the game should be a priority. So, DMC POC should be a game where it should stay in 1.0 combat instead of becoming another Honkai Clone. I hate to say this but I want to play combo games that actually does combos instead of pressing magic buttons and it does everything for you. If Casuals wanted to get DMC to be more casual, then go play and turn on auto combo assist. IDK, I love mobile users but you guys sometimes are the reason why cross platform games are a total deadweight nowadays.
