  • Welcome to our first Ohio State Symphony Orchestra concert of the year! We are pleased to present the debut of our new esteemed violin professor, Andrii Isakov, performing the majestic Violin Concerto in D major by Johannes Brahms. This work is dedicated to Brahms' dear friend, violinist Joseph Joachim.
A work of epic proportion - nearly one hour - Franz Schubert tried to get a premiere performance of his new 9th Symphony at the Musikverein in Vienna, but was sadly turned down, so the "Great" Symphony in C major was not performed until 1839, a decade after Schubert's death. The manuscript was discovered by Robert Schumann, buried in a pile of Schubert's old dusty manuscripts. Felix Mendelssohn conducted the premiere at the Leipzig Gewandhaus. When he tried to program it later with the London Philharmonic, string players refused, citing the fiendish difficulty of the pervasive triplets and dotted rhythm in the 4th movement! - Miriam Burns, conductor.
