  • Guided nondual meditation by Michael Taft, in an undisclosed location, for the San Francisco Dharma Collective.
For the last 30 meditations or so, we have often used Michael's technique, called "dropping the ball." This is a way allowing the mind to open up to the "natural state."
Here we use the dropping the ball technique to go even deeper into letting go than we normally do.
Hence the "ultra ball." Yes, Michael is Level 36 in Pokemon Go. haha
Hoping you all stay safe and healthy during this difficult time.

Thank you for these great instructions. In the third phase of noticing the relief in letting go, you mention that this is a subtle relief, but I actually found the relief to be quiet strong at times. Hope you are well.

I routinely lose proprioception in my hands during sits, but this was the first time I lost track of my HEAD. I honestly couldn't have told you whether I was sitting straight or chin-in-hands or *what*.
I don't know if this is the ball you meant to drop, but at the end of the session, I had to pick it up and put it back on my shoulders. :)

Hey Michael, any chance you can plug in your podcasting mics for these live streams. Would make these streams so much more lovely and would be mega appreciated.

Extend the metaphor to how you trick the grasping dog? I’m like “dude, I don’t even want that....HA! Got it :-) “

This dropping the ball technique is better than anything else I've ever tried. Can one simply practice this technique exclusively and "go all the way"?

Great instruction. Thank you for this Michael! I’ve developed very tight attention and it’s causing pressure at the base of my nose. I’m having a heck of a time releasing this pressure as this seems to be my window of awareness. Will “dropping the ball” help me to release this pressure? I tried this meditation but I’m unsure as to where awareness is supposed to rest since I’ve trained myself to do jhana with tight focus. Thanks!

You are mixing up awareness and attention. Awareness doesn't point at anything, because it's everywhere. So it either rests equally on everything. In this meditation (during Dropping the Ball), there is no attention at all. That is, you are not pointing or resting attention on anything. You are allowing attention to relax completely, until it is as wide as awareness itself. Doing this correctly will probably relieve the pressure you're describing, assuming it's caused by focusing your attention tightly.
