    This M50 is the slightly-less famous Israeli upgrade to Sherman, designed to keep the former M3 75mm tanks up to par alongside the 76mm M1 tanks. Don't worry if you have difficulty keeping up with Israeli Shermans, it's not an easy topic. This particular vehicle is owned and operated by Battlefield Vegas.

    If you think about it, the history of this particular specimen is quite interesting and unusual. An american tank sold to the french where they retrofitted it, after which it was sold to the israelis who retrofitted it again and now it's back in the US with a collector. An 80 year journey to make the ultimate frankenpanzer.

  • @c1ph3rpunk

    It would not surprise me if the Israelis still had a Sherman program, hidden away somewhere, that’s been continually modernized “just in case”. It now has an American turret, British Chobham armor, Russian reactive defenses, Polish tracks, Czech bogeys, German 120mm gun and a Swiss V-12 engine. Mandatory rear hanging bucket is still under development, the RFP responses were less than exciting. To keep relations in good standing they’ll likely go French for this.
    In all seriousness, their Sherman just looks bad ass.

    • @gusgone4527
      @gusgone4527 2 года назад +14

      In all seriousness, I think they are just fine with Merkava. Perhaps newer and better "other" hulls such as Centurion may be the subject of a few developments but Israel now benefits from standardisation of it's MBT fleet. Not as interesting for tank nuts like us.
      Out of interest Daren, have you seen the Namer heavy APC based on Merkava. I wonder where the Russian got the idea for their T15?

    • @borismekler
      @borismekler 2 года назад +14

      Why would Israel need Russian reactive defenses when it was Israel that pioneered both ERA (Soviets started designing and deploying ERA after studying samples of Blazer captured in the 1982 war) and active protection (Trophy is in active service, whereas various Soviet/Russian attempts have been acquired by exactly nobody)?

    Just watched an old war movie called Kill Rommel (1969) where the tanks used on both sides were Shermans with what looked like AMX13 turrets mounted on them, I'd never seen or heard of these before and wondered about them. I looked them up on the net (still feel lucky 2 live in such an age) and they turn out to be French-built Egyptian M4A4 Fl-10 tanks from the mid-1950s. They had the same gun as the M50 with a 12-round auto-loader, a different option on a similar theme provided by the Fench but seem to have performed very poorly. I wondered why but noticed many were captured intact so maybe morale and logistics were the problem?

    If you're interested in the track tensioning system of a Sherman... Nicholas, who do you think you are talking to?!

    As far as stowage goes, from my experience as a US tanker, I agree with the Chieftain - the more the merrier. Tank crews live on their vehicles, so it's as much a mobile home as a weapon. Note the Israeli version of the buttback clipped to the rail behind the turret. There is one thing the IDF forgot - where's the beer cooler?
    As far as one tow cable per tank - the IDF is nowhere near as wealthy as the US military. When you are field a couple thousand tanks, small savings add up

    These early cold war shermans are cool as hell. Also proves that German WWII vehicles weren't "the best things ever" because if they were, they would have seen continued development and not the Sherman.

    always wondered what the white V is on tanks nowadays. worked with an old tanker and he had no idea what it stood for. as usual always a pleasure Chieftan.

      I figured it was a unit indicator or a symbol to denote friendly forces? I honestly don't know either to be honest.

      @@709mash unit identifier on Israeli tanks. Don't remember if it's company or battalion, though.
      On Desert Storm tanks, that's a "friendly force" identifier.

      The white chevron direction indicates which company the tank belongs to: up, left, right, down = A, B, C, D company.
