Give me chills every time; and the way he can make his guitar weep! Mark wrote this song in response to the Brits involvement in the Falklands war (1982): He actually lost a friend in that conflict, which might explain why he seems so emotional whenever he performs this one during concerts. The song is written from the perspective of a mortally wounded soldier. In 2007, Mark rereleased the track and dedicated the proceeds to those still suffering from the effects of that conflict. The last line of the song is often overlooked, but is perhaps the most important, "we are fools to make war on our brother in arms"; I understand he meant this in the broadest sense, 'brothers' denoting our fellow man. Now that you've heard/seen the official video, you owe it to yourself to check out a live performance of this song (they are always better live!): The first option (with the best sound and audio quality) is their live performance from "On the Night"; a second option is their performance at Wembley for Nelson Mandela's birthday (this one is also worth checking out after the former, because Mark's emotion was palpable... he began by dedicating the performance 'to the gentleman in question' and saying 'one humanity, one justice').
The video was all hand drawn over the video it was a tech triumph in the 80’s and took months to make. A brilliant song by my favourite guitarist and songwriter.
Mark is so good on guitar, drawing out exactly the emotion he wants from those six strings. I can recommend Money for Nothing as one of the great early music vids, and Sultans of Swing as just a cool song.
In the 70's and 80's we had real musicians and incredible creativity which gave us Dire Straits Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, YES , Genesis, Jethro Tull, The Rolling Stones - today they have Taylor Swift and Black Pink and nobody knows one end of an instrument from the other. Thank goodness people are discovering this music for the first time and they now see why Pink Floyds album cover and A/C D/C are cultural icons. "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" to quote Charles Dickens, but the music lives on. Nice one Shane.
I'm doing great thanks, nice sunny relaxing day here in South Africa. Hoping to come out with lots of bangers from the past this week :D Hope you having a great weekend? 😊
I actually prefer live performances, but this song with this video is just perfect. So sad, the band members with serious faces, the sea full of people, then the skulls, plus Mark's guitar and his beautiful voice, what can you say. Sad and unfortunately so contemporary, a masterpiece
HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY EVELINE!! 🍰🎈🎁 I'm sorry it was a bit sad... bbut I understand with all the things going on in your life at the moment 💜 Let me know if there is a song you'd like me to react to for your Birthday 😁 (For Free)

Knopfler may have techinical equals, but for me no-one could make the guitar sing link him. Combined with the poetry or his lyrics, I don't think he has an equal.
Falling in Reverse just dropped the new album with 4 new songs, one of them called "Prequel" has a video, please react to it, its the best song and video they ever made so far!!!
As a military veteran I cray when I hear this God bless
Great reaction Shane nobody plays guitar like Knopfler.....

"One humanity, one justice". 4 words, one powerful message.
Each time I hear this song, when Mark playa the guitar, a shiver crosses all my body. Thanks for take this song to the channel
We're fools to make war

Well said. Great reaction to one of the most beautiful songs written. Cheers from a finn in Sweden.
Homie with the stank face when Marks lays down the tones. Great reaction bro!

Man, love your accent. That's about the hardest Yarpie I think I've ever heard. Great reactions by the way.
Greetings to South Africa

Reminds me of Pink Floyd I grew up In 80s there are no groups like this anymore
A fitting quote, about violence and war, from the Fallout tv-series. "Everybody wants to save the world. They just disagree on how."
-We can see a classic scene with this song, on the TV show "Miami Vice" in the 1980's, (in last scene of the episode: 'Out Where the Buses Don't Run')
Thanks Shane, I love it, I hope you enjoyed your beautiful sunny day, here 12°!!!! and rain! pffff it's my Birthday today
