  • On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about how being dizzy, or having a vestibular imbalance, can cause anxiety. Vestibular dysfunction is the main cause of dizziness. The vestibular system originates in the inner ear, but then centrally in the brain, the vestibular system connects to almost all the areas in the brain. It connects to areas in the brainstem involved in autonomic control and regulation, the hypothalamus involved with the stress response, and the limbic system governing emotions and memory. When there is a vestibular imbalance, this causes imbalances in these other areas as well. This can lead to a racing heart, sweaty palms, increased stress hormones like cortisol and epinephrine, and feelings of distress. Check out the video for more in depth information on how dizziness or a vestibular imbalance can promote anxiety!

I know the feeling it sucks, especially when you think you’ll feel “safer” laying down whenever you feel dizzy, lightheaded, you could actually feel dizzier laying down

10:49 his anxiety went up. I have constant swaying rocking floating dizziness sensation like I'm a boat 24/7 for months... At first it was tolerable (only uncomfortable when laying down) but now it's reaching a point where it's nauseating all the time... Anxiety is seriously causing all this/messing with my nerves? Like trembling... I can't stand this... And I don't want to resort to antidepressants... I feel so trapped and cornered... Only I can do is suffer

@@k.baller5140 12 months and only recently getting better. However, very slowly. In my experience, nothing works except just letting the symptoms be. Just listen to them through mindful mediation. Take 20 minutes, and just listen/watch/observe the sensations and let them be. Nothing more. Nothing less. Accept them that they will be with you forever. And be okay with them.

Any tips for people who go through chronic vestibular symptoms due to migraines and therefore become anxious?

    • @TheNeurologicWellnessInstitute

Try your best to find a specialist in vestibular migraines so you can hopefully reduce the frequency and intensity of migraines which should give you a probability of reducing your anxiety. Our treatment is based on our evaluation so unfortunately we do not have straight forward protocols for a subset of patients. Best of luck
