It’s so funny how polarised JJ and Jon are in terms of how clued up they are on Chelsea. JJ makes a really great, nuanced argument about Chelsea’s squad building being better than many give them credit for, and then Jon rebuttals with “but palmer and madueke are both right wingers!”. Really highlights which one watches Chelsea more regularly.
Yeah, they actually got JJ on, who (other than Adam Cleary, although he fell into the same media viewbait on this topic), ignores a lot of the media's viewbaiting narrative and actually fairly asses Chelsea. No surprise when they had a video with Jon (Who is a leeds fan, so I can understand wanting to buy into the narrative) and someone who wasn't a non Chelsea representative or JJ, they just fed into the same media narrative that we have 42 players.
Great video; love the tactical analyses. Small pedantic point here but on the JJ’s outro, Rafa Honingstein no longer writes for The Athletic (and rarely see an Amy Lawrence piece either).
Let’s be totally honest, Rice is a very solid player, but he’s not technical enough to be a pivot (at a top top club), and he’s not creative enough to direct forward play. He’s just an engine
@@big83matt83 tbh as an English person, I get that our media overhypes players, but I’m also starting to think the clubs pay a premium for them because the homegrown player quota
Rice's impact last season was immense. With Cole Palmer, he had the biggest PotY shout (other than City players) and also the signing of the season (again, with Palmer). But he played pretty much every game last season, played in the Euros (until the Finals), and is now starting since Matchday 1 again. He's tired. Which is why he's already gotten _two_ yellows in three games for late challenges.
I like how they’re talking about Chelsea’s squad being relatively normally sized with about 18 extra players just on the border of the pitch… on top of the 2+ for each position they’ve put in the pitch. Definitely mad!
It will be tighter at the bottom. Saints and Foxes look like prem squads and Ipswich look nails while the toffees and Man U look all at sea and three or four teams look capable of shooting themselves in the foot.
