I ran the 70 grain Nosler RDFs with 23.5gr of Varget and they shot 5 shots at a 1/2 inch at 100 yards and about 1.4 inches at 200 yards. I was super happy with the results. The 69 SMKs were also about the same.
Shannon, I know this is an old video that I am just finding, but addressing the issue of loose primer pockets in .223 brass... Try removing the extractor pin from one of your .380 auto sizing dies; then run the .223 brass through the .380 die body (like sizing lead bullets) and see if that fixes your loose pockets! - Jace
Today is 1/20/21.... primers, bullets, and powder .... are only available from the saddle bags on that herd of unicorns that just ran down the street. That is why I'm watching a reloading video from your library. Seems to be the only way to enjoy the hobby.... livin' in the past!!
Like you said it’s good to see those dramatic differences sometimes when varying one component in the load recipe. Definitely fuels the fire to keep us searching for those ultimate reloads!
I really like your format, how you share all the main specs of your loads, etc. Great Job Bro. Might be interesting to measure the bullet jump to your lands for your gun and adjust the O.A.L. for your gun with your best IMR load and see the differences that makes... Further refine that .5 moa group. See what happens. Be sure to leave a jump. Don't seat against the lands, that's dangerous. But varying your jump seems to be the next step in achieving your accuracy.
Hey nice I have wondered about my cheap chronograph. I'd it would give good measurements and everything and I guess i need not worry. And good to see ya back I've turned into a Johnny's Reloading Bench junky I guess every couple hours I look to see if you've posted a new video or not lol bit I really enjoy your stuff and keep it coming brother
Mirrors my experience with Nosler projectiles. Want to get all the variation out? First weight sort the projectiles. Second base to ogive with the Stony. It's a benchrest sickness.
I've seen you run out of OAL adj before. If you have a longer cartridge die set, simply swap seating punches. Example: 30-06 & 308. Also 22-250 & 223. The longer cartridge will have the extra length you need.
I tried working up a load with these and Ramshot TAC, but couldn't get it to group well... I had high hopes... Glad to see that 8208 XBR, gives me some hope. Would love to see some additional powders.
Another great video Johnny! I agree with Ron K about the position of the Chrono and angle of light. Still a pretty good comparison. I wouldn't mind seeing a few rounds with the AA2520 just to see how it groups. I also liked that you started with the brass trimmed and no crimps. Keeping everything consistent except the powder is the perfect test. I used to crimp about everything I was going to shoot in a semi-auto but after seeing your videos, I crimp less often. Keep the videos coming! I have learned so much from watching and can't wait for more .224 Valkyrie! Great job!
I shot a best group Saturday with 22.8gr TAC and the 70gr RDF. The velocity was 2685fps in my 24" Varmint. I think the variation in the Caldwell chrono depends on the positioning of the sensors and perhaps a slight angle of the two sun shades.
XBR 8208 and RL15 are my go to powders. I would be trying RL15... I couldn't get the velocity out of XBR 8208 that I could with RL15. Once I loaded 55gr Hornady SP w/xbr8208 it came around.
since i started loading berger vld's, i had to buy a vld-specific die - i use redding. i also use it for any other bullet with a secant style ogive (hornady vmax, barnes tac lr, berger vld, etc). they say you can use it for tangent style ogive bullets, but if you use it on a compressed load it will put a ring on the ogive. it's easy enough to swap out the seater from one to the other though
I'm 1000 years late to comment here but I figured i would add a note: AA2230 and RS X Terminator are the same powder... And Shooter's World AR Plus seems to be identical as well.
I know this is an old video but if it were my horse to ride, I would take the 22.9 charge and very the seating depth and see if you can tighten the group. That 10 fps standard deviation was to good to leave on the table. I would also investigate 22.8 and 23.0. Also, when it comes to the 23.5 grain charge, the area of 23.6 grains is in a none accuracy node for 77/75 class bullets. Seeing what 23.4 and 23.6 do would be a worthwhile experiment. As usual, love your content.
JRB, if you are going to swap scope between Valkyrie and 223, note the zero markings for the 223, then do the same when you swap to Valkyrie. When you go back and forth, if properly torqued down, you should be very close to your marked settings for each caliber.
Would like to see this again with AR-Comp & PowerPro2000-MR --- {Please} I have used my 69TMK data for this round. Still experimenting. All in all another great video from Johnny.
It would be awesome to see you work up a load for an AR pistol. Could be a great series to see a pistol plinking load and another load worked out for accuracy
Good content sir thank you. I picked up 100ct .224 70gr RDF at Nosler today I will try these in a 16" RH 1:8 5 groove with a Wylde chamber. I spent some time with a Nosler tech regarding this bullet in a AR platform these should work well with 1.750" brass for a COAL of 2.255-2.260". I have Varget, IMR 8208, Accurate 2495 and H-4895 to try with these bullets. my RCBS and Hornady seating dies will work with this Ogive. I hope you get a chance to try Accurate 2495 with similar weight bullets, I like IMR 8208 but it is hard to find in my parts.
Johnny, have you shot any of the 70 gr semi pointed Speer bullets? I'm thinking about ordering them for my TC Compass .223, but I'm not sure if a 1:9 will stabalize.
@ JRB: Shoot some Varget! I shoot the 70gr Berger VLDs over 24.8gr (Berger's stated maximum with 0 pressure signs, could probably go another .3gr or so) in a 24" barrel for a velocity of 2925fps which gives me 0.3-0.4 MOA if I do my part. Just loaded up some RDF's working up to the same max charge but haven't had a chance to shoot them yet. Would love to see how your WOA barrel shoots the RDF's with Varget.
According to my modern reloading manul by Richard lee 2nd edition. 70 grn jacketed bullet.startiing chg for 8208 20.0 grns max chg 21.8 grns. Min oal 2.140. all this can be found on pg.318.hope this helps
wlehtola awesome! I’ve been doing a lot of work with 22-250 so I don’t have money right now for 224 Valkyrie but some day I will build a 224 Valkyrie upper.
Johnny, try the 175 grain Nosler RDF in your M5 308 build. I worked up a load with IMR 4064 that was shooting super well out of my 24-inch Criterion barrel (Fulton Armory Criterion Barrel)
Has anyone seen the new Lee auto breech progressive press that will be available in April? I know Midsouth Shooter Supply has them available for back order, just wanting to see what people think about if it will be a practical press. It has 4 stations that will use the Lee breech lock system where you set the dies in the breech lock and will not have to reposition them when changing dies without having to change the entire die plate on top.
I think the biggest thing to consider is if Lee has redesigned the primer feed. It seems that is what gives the most issues on Pro 1000 and loadmaster presses. It looks to be set up for the same calibers as the Pro 1000 which maxes out at 223 for OAL. I think it will do well as long as it is not your only press.
The 70Gr Nosler RDF got my attention with the stated BC of .416, the Sierra 77TMK has a stated BC of .420, My thoughts were 77gr BC with 69gr velocities, should keep me supersonic at 900 yards. Just wondering if any viewers have any experience or thoughts on this.
I’d like to see the 70RDF with H4895. I shot it with Varget and accuracy was poor until it was pushed very hard and heavily compressed. Even then it wasn’t stunning. My optical chrono would do the same things as yours depending on the lighting conditions. It always read higher on cloudy days. PS, we need a hot 6mm on the channel. Grab-a-Gun has the RPR in 6 Creed for 799 ;)
i second the 7.62x39 request, i have a factory proclaimed sub MOA AK variant and id love to see some good data both for groups and hunting loads. you're the master by the way!
I’m getting an uncomfortable feeling ball power accuracy sucks in AR 223? Am I wrong in thinking extruded broadly out performs ball powder as a category?
Thanks for all the great vids..Ive learned a ton from you. Would you consider doing some work with the 24-45 Sharps round? I think you can load it into the 223 brass and just switch the upper. Reloadin might be a cheap option to get a heavier bullet. Any way..keep up the good work
i just ran a test of these last weekend out my almost identical spr setup, running tac off the same ladder i ran 69 TMK , ran into pressure issues at 23.8 grains split a case neck mv was like 2850 accuracy was horrible definitely looking for an accurate load for this
I was reading on Caldwell cause you inspired me to want one cause so cheep thou price is up bit right now and I am brock. and it stats in some forums sun light can create you reason one day it dose it one way and the other day was not same. looks nice for cheep thou.. for like me that not use it a lot.
I would suggest the 450 or 41's. 400's are pretty thin, and mine were being penetrated and clogging my bolt carrier group until I switched to the 450s.
I was wondering how often you clean your gas tubes? I try to clean mine about every 1000 rounds. I have noticed a difference in the gas pulse when I do.
Johnny ! Love the channel. Glad we have your passion . But have ask , why did you use that cheap little scale and a powder scoop? Does it work that well? Thanks again jp
North_Florida_War_Room Only see mixed range brass. Do they sell 500/1000 processed LC brass? Only seeing package deals with bullets that come with LC brass.
Brb u may wanna try the 55g sp w/ cannelure varmint, SPBT design product#2266 from hornady. ive gotten the best accuracy of any 55g bullet. with these HORNADY 55g SP bullets seated to cannelure oal @ 2.185" in LC brass trimmed to 1.750" loaded w/ 26g AR-COMP & Win sr primers in crazy 20-30mph swirling wind gusts i was shooting around just under 1"@100 on average .935" 5 shot groups off a concrete table w/16" 556 an ar15 that was rock in the gov profile stainless freedom barrel upper assy with the a2 sight and midlenth gassystem/round plastc handguard on a anderson lower and a 4x simmons shotgun scope on top, funny right! I then proceeded to bang steel w/ 3shot groups at 100yd increments in order 2,3,4,5 out to 600yds well hears where is gets good. All the 3 shot groups where less than spectacular as i say the wind sucked bad and i was realy just trying to get a feel for the gail force swirling cyclone throwing bullet swatter. But after the first 3shot group at 6 to verify my hold and affects of the wind, i could literally see the wind changing direction from left to rt and back to left via flags every 100yds. I proceeded to put 15 of the rounds into a what ill say was no bigger than 7" more like 6.5" but ill go with 7 for arguments sake shooting painted steel. I can't freakin wait till I get a day with little to no wind. Hell im excited to see how the load shoots out my other rifles now. 55g Soft points out of a bottom shelf ar15 shooting ridiculously well, better than it ever should in that sort of weather. who knew. I almost left when i got to the range and saw how bad the wind was, its was twice as bad as I thought it would be goin by how it felt when i left my house I figured maybe 10mph. I was way off.
Hi Im from Australia and I'm looking at trying to Nosler 70 gr RDF for 223 Remington and was wondering why you chose to do 2.260 inch for the overall length
Never understand why the Military doesn't use these high BC bullets for our soldiers Ammunition. Sure it'll cost more but compared to an aircraft carrier is it that much?
I swear for the life of me, I cannot get my mind around how a powder can affect accuracy. I suppose a smoother initial drive push could help but other than that I just can’t figure it out.
Randal Hall I think it has to do with the harmonics of your barrel the different burns create different vibrations and I thi k that has a lot to do with it and the burn speed nothing is exactly the same even the same powder u less it's the same lot. I love rl22 in my 300 win but I have had one pound that shoots 1 to 3/4 groups then the next pound that shoots . Half inch almost every shot. But that's my take on it
Was watching a show called shooter and on the last episode of 1st season a guy blows his face off from overloaded case....u need to work that graphic in
I ran the 70 grain Nosler RDFs with 23.5gr of Varget and they shot 5 shots at a 1/2 inch at 100 yards and about 1.4 inches at 200 yards. I was super happy with the results. The 69 SMKs were also about the same.

That last group of 820XBR was looking great. I might get some of these in my local Cabelas and tryout cfe223 and AR comp
Been looking for 8208 for a long time and finally got 2 lbs . Had to pay shipping of course . Never got to try it until now

out of my ballistic precision 18 inch with tac these bullets were garbage
Dude, love the .223/5.56 series you ROCK JOHNNY!!!...
The newer smk that have been pointed from the factory are very similar, they have very small openings in the meplat.
Thanks for the video and different grains of bullet
XBR 8208 and RL15 are my go to powders.
I would be trying RL15...

The lighting makes a difference with the Caldwell. The newer models come with LED shades that provide the light.
I'm 1000 years late to comment here but I figured i would add a note:
AA2230 and RS X Terminator are the same powder... And Shooter's World AR Plus seems to be identical as well.

Johnny, found your review very through and informative. So. I subcribed...

I don't think I've ever seen him ever actually sight a scope in. I'm not sure if he's fully understands scope adjustments.
Awesome I ordered some gust last Friday and i have some xbr.
I'd love to see the 175 grain RDF's in that 308.

I'd like to see you try some blc2 or cfe 223. They are almost the same powder so either would be cool to see maybe with some other random powder.
Is their any chance that the chronograph attached to the barrel could throw off barrel harmonics?
What are your barrel twist rates in .223 and 6.5?

Love some 8208 XBR!!
Wouldn’t mind seeing how Varget does with the heavier 223 bullets.
i second the 7.62x39 request, i have a factory proclaimed sub MOA AK variant and id love to see some good data both for groups and hunting loads. you're the master by the way!
I’m getting an uncomfortable feeling ball power accuracy sucks in AR 223? Am I wrong in thinking extruded broadly out performs ball powder as a category?

Do you have the 25-45? I was thinking about building one once I sell my 6mm AR barrel? How do you like it?
The only primers we can get her CCI 400 and federal 205 small rifle primers
AR Comp and the 70 gr. Nosler would be a nice combination..
i miss 300 blackout videos...
Lapua brass
CCI 450
24.0 gr 8208 xbr
70 nosler rdf
Ever plan on getting (or do you have) anything that fires 7.62x39? I'd love to see some accuracy squeezing from the master!
Will the 8208 XBR powder work with the 6.5 Creedmoor? Seems like really consistant powder.
It's a bit too fast. It would work well for the lighter 6.5 bullets, but those defeat the purpose of having a creedmoor.
It does with 130s and lighter. But to fast for anything heavier
Morning buddy. Interesting video. A lot too leaned over your videos thanks buddy. ATB
i have found my Caldwell chrono will give me better data when shooting distance. 600 plus
i just ran a test of these last weekend out my almost identical spr setup, running tac off the same ladder i ran 69 TMK , ran into pressure issues at 23.8 grains split a case neck mv was like 2850 accuracy was horrible definitely looking for an accurate load for this
I was reading on Caldwell cause you inspired me to want one cause so cheep thou price is up bit right now and I am brock. and it stats in some forums sun light can create you reason one day it dose it one way and the other day was not same. looks nice for cheep thou.. for like me that not use it a lot.
Varget Powder Please & Thanks, Keep up the hard work .
I know it’s an old video, do you always use the CCI 41? I typically use the 400. I not to knowledgeable on primers. What do you think?
I would suggest the 450 or 41's. 400's are pretty thin, and mine were being penetrated and clogging my bolt carrier group until I switched to the 450s.
I was wondering how often you clean your gas tubes? I try to clean mine about every 1000 rounds. I have noticed a difference in the gas pulse when I do.
Does using different year headstamp with the Lake City brass make a difference in accuracy?
Johnny ! Love the channel. Glad we have your passion . But have ask , why did you use that cheap little scale and a powder scoop? Does it work that well? Thanks again jp
can u get more fps using 5.56 case or does lapua not make 5.56 nato brass?
Always wear eye protection when you’re testing loads ! 😮
I wonder if VV N530 or N540 will be Black Hills MK262 perfect match?
Sages reloading supply, best place for lake city brass, 2 day shipping
North_Florida_War_Room +1 for sage reloading join the Facebook group aswell. Deals deals deals lol
North_Florida_War_Room Only see mixed range brass. Do they sell 500/1000 processed LC brass? Only seeing package deals with bullets that come with LC brass.
I buy their gas checks, good stuff!
why not measure length from ogive to maintain off the lands accuracy.
Thoughts on lee 223 dies? Everyone says get the factory crimp die, what about the whole set?
I almost left when i got to the range and saw how bad the wind was, its was twice as bad as I thought it would be goin by how it felt when i left my house I figured maybe 10mph. I was way off.
Did u get 2 seating stems with your 6.5 creedmoor hornady dies Johnny?
More grendel please love the videos keep then coming
why you struggled with the seating depth is because of this;
Bullet O'Give
Nosler 70gr. .500
Sierra 69gr .520
Lupua 69gr .555
Hornady 68gr. .585
RDF Bullet with Varget
Like to see how they do with TAC
With that heavy of a bullet what is the twist rate of the barrel
Groups dont mean squat at 100 yards. Its the lower sd that matter.
Any plans to test the Hornady 73 ELD-M?
I bet I got the same batch of LC brass. Brassbombers?
Hey Johnny do you know anywhere to get BR2 primers my local supply is gone
Love the 8208!
Hi Im from Australia and I'm looking at trying to Nosler 70 gr RDF for 223 Remington and was wondering why you chose to do 2.260 inch for the overall length
Luke, 2.260 inch is the maximum length to fit in a typical AR-15 magazine, which is what Johnny tests his .223/5.56 loads in.
Another good video.
Has anyone loaded it on a Blaser R8 10 twist .223?
Kotaboy 32 tactical sent me over wow you do have a great station I am a new sub just thank kottaboy32

What's the word on the AR-10 build?
Which chrono was which in the graph?
Wow, whoray for 8208
Never understand why the Military doesn't use these high BC bullets for our soldiers Ammunition. Sure it'll cost more but compared to an aircraft carrier is it that much?
I don't get the point of trying to push a bullet beyond its capability. I would say a little over a half inch group is pretty good for a semi auto.
But that's my take on it
Harmonics
Pressure curve
Velocity
How the expanding gasses exit the muzzle and affect the bullet
someone please link me his scale i need a good one please?
I think you went too high with X-Term.
