  • This video is all about my experiences using the fantastic Fujinon MK cinema lenses adapted to RF mount. The focus is with the RED Komodo but I also talk about the Canon RF cameras too. It isn't a review of the Komodo, I do give some thoughts on it, that will come at a later date.

Every time I see a new video, I'm always struck by the commitment to your craft that you continue to cultivate. I also think, foolishly, "Ah! Now THIS is the best gear combination he's used so far, so surely if I copy it exactly then I'll get great results." It turns out that talent, artistic vision, decades of experience, and dedication to endlessly improve and refine your skills is more important than the gear, since I keep having the same reaction no matter what kit you use. Who knew?? :)

Nice look at the MK zooms, Phillip. Beautiful. Good to hear the opinion of a veteran ENG shooter. I recall shooting with 2/3" cameras in the 1990's using Fujinon and Canon ENG zooms. That was back when "parfocal" wasn't a common term. Of course they hold focus. :) Keep up the good work. Look forward to seeing more.

      Persona
Cheers! the FX6 is a better for me, full frame, HFR without cropping. 120p in 2k crop is way too much for me on the Komodo. Using these on the FX6 means setting the camera to 1.3x clear image zoom.
Love r3d but global shutter is not essential for me as the read rate of the fx6 sensor is super fast soreally minimal rolling shutter

@@philipbloom thanks. Always very clear and kind. Most likely to pass to Sony FX6 plus a Sony FX3 for use on Gimbal, so you have room A and room B and be fast. I currently work for Panasonic so I use the Eva1 as their ambassador, a camera still very valid and with a high quality file, but I feel the need to switch to the full full frame sensor, definitively, after the negative crop experience that I did not welcome On the Panasonic S1H.

Thanks so much for that piece. I echo the many comments, always beautifully done and its a timely subject as the MK's have seemingly been forgotton post DZO, but I am slightly confused. I totally understand that this isnt a Komodo review but in both the Komodo and R5 footage I am finding it hard to see the detail and sharpness that I remember these lenses having. I can remember back in the day when you were a fierce advocate of pulling down the sharpening and saturation from DSLR settings and although I am sure that its down to the youtube compression the images seem quite saturated and high contrast. I know this is all to taste but do you prefer a less flat less desaturated image in general? I understand its hard to show off the fidelity of the lens through youtube. I believe that I am watching potentially a 2K file but will you be posting on vimeo any high res images for download. Thanks again for all yout thoughful output.

It's already on Vimeo ken on my main channel. I don't add post sharpening and i always shoot with my cameras and minimal or off if possible. I don't want it. 5d had no flat profile hence low contrast and low saturation.
Image is graded to rec709, nothing stylised deliberately.

Sharpness/ contrast and sharpness have no connection. Can be sharp and flat or contrasty. Up to how you grade.

@@philipbloom Thanks for that and sure I get that. I guess when I am looking to check fidelity and detail in a lens, I am looking for sharp detail and I often look for specific textures that I am familiar with and are good indicators, that high contrast can sometimes hide. eg shadow details and skin or fabric textures particularly in the blacks, cotton v lycra, v waterproof fabric, all black but with subtle and different reflectivity and detail. In much the same way that animal fur can be a great guide (your cats as a perfect example) one of the best illustrations of the kinefinity MAVO LF (fidelity for want of a better word) were the shots you took of one of your cats on the bed. I guess I err towards a flatter less saturated image because it feels like I can "see" those different textures better. Sometimes people say more Arri than RED but that in itself is a bit confusing. When reading overall composition of a picture I understand that contrast is often needed to delineate different objects within the frame to make things "pop" and for that reason I can totally see why RED and the sometimes aggressive grades that are often associated with RED are so good for drama or digital delivery. Anyway I appreciate you response and look forward to your thoughts on the Komodo in due course. Meanwhile your thoughts on the mystical unicorn that is the Mavo 8K would be of great interest. Thanks for all your work.

It's a shame you can't convert the MKX versions and retain the lens metadata with the new lens mount. Oh well.

Hi Philip, here's a question that might be worth doing a video on. I have a Canon DSLR with EF lenses and was about to jump to mirrorless lenses probably with the Canon R3. However your reviews are making me question whether I shouldn't take the opportunity to switch entirely into, say, Sony, or perhaps another brand. In the past it's been prohibitively expensive to do so, and probably still is, but I'm interested in peoples views on this.

Sooo, your idea is to do a video comparing Canon and Sony cameras? Please tell me you just woke up from a 5 year coma.

Redcode might be a 16 bit container but the files are 12 bit log, and 16+ stops of DR right, we both know Arris 14 stops are higher then the komodo

Hello Philip, always impressed by the sharpness of your videos when uploaded to RUclips and wondered if you could let me into the secret! Whenever I upload they always lose their sharpness! Any tips please? I edit using Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve.

Right now, the Komodo seems really really tempting. Such beautiful footage. I think you might have a future in filmmaking.
I have the much cheaper Sigma Art lenses. They are big and heavy, but what would you say about image quality between the two lenses?
