Pointers: 1: You get 30 minutes of free repair time, this won't add to your event time so use it! 2: Use the handbrake to whip the car into tight corners and hairpins, else you'll just slow to a halt in the gravel.
+Tiametmarduk I would advice against the handbrake, if you do you should just give it a small tap to get the car turned in, I'd still advice to try to keep momentum in the corners, a handbrake just kills that if you over-use it. Another tip is to not go down to 1st gear in the mini as you'll need to shift up to 2nd immediately.
+Tiametmarduk its annoying how everyone takes the mini :P. i would say the lancia or reno are better cause they are RWD so less understeer and more fun to drive in general
Don't turn in and expect grip, its all about feeling weight transfer and using it to get you through a stage flowing and fast. Also you don't have to be as smooth with the inputs as in f1, dont be afraid to dab the brakes if you feel a loss of grip to get the car turning. Plus always repair your car!!!!
It's not just crashes that can damage your car, the course alone does too. Plus, "repairing damages" actually lets you change tire-wear, it's like a pitstop, to say.
One big improvement is don't be scared to get the car sideways on the dirt, it means you can carry a lot more speed through the corner and carry the momentum
For front wheel cars don't hesitate to fling the car in the corners, for instance in a left corner: turn right then swiftly to the left to launch your back wheels and go around the corner like a rear wheel car. Nice to see some new vidz by the way ;)
Also you get I think free 30 minutes to repair your car. Every damage you suffer takes certain amount of time to fix. So in the end you can get away with slight damage without any punishment.
Solid start; you'll find you have to turn in much earlier than you think you should in places like Greece or Wales; if not you'll go wide into the corner and won't be able to carry as much speed through, especially important in an underpowered car. I'm sure someone has already mentioned it, but you get 30 minutes to repair your vehicle without a time penalty. If you spend more than that 30 minutes, then you'll get a penalty to your time, but always use that 30 minutes to do what repair you can. The game is also very gentle when it comes to damage; you can terminally damage a car, but it takes a bit of work. You can hit a tree head on at speed, and instead of ending your rally, it just damages your radiator a bit. The hardest part when you get to the faster cars will be hearing and interpreting the pace notes properly; it's not such a big deal in these slower cars, but it's worth starting to get accustomed to them. You'll also start getting that grip-breaking torque in the next class, which greatly adds to the fun, but also the peril...
Hey Ben here is a tip for ya. INTERNATIONALLY CREAT OVERSTEER. When going around some of the tighter corners you might want to create oversteer just to go around a corner faster
+Sly. Penguin yep in rally the fastest way to go around a corner, well the tight ones anyway, is by creating and controlling oversteer. You don't want understeer however
Really really love this. Keep up the series! I would suggest normal commentary through all but one rally, where you have minimal commentary and let us just listen to the game. This has to be one of the best sounding racing games ever!
Some tips for rallying: It's sometimes faster to go slightly sideways on gravel. Same thing on the ice, if you use spiked tires. If not, then it's better to avoid wheelspin. In rallycross (and anytime driving on gravel) you can actually go a bit sideways in the braking so that the car is slightly pointing towards the corner in advance, but point the front tires into the way the car is going to in order to avoid spinning. The car will start to turn when you release the brakes and decrease the opposite lock. When you drive a 4WD car on gravel or snow, just turn in and control the car with the throttle when going sideways. Listening to the pace notes really helps as well, once you get used to it. In your videos you haven't been driving on snow yet, but once you do, a trick worth having a go is to lean to the snow banks at the exit of a corner while going sideways. They make it possible to go around a corner faster and the banks even push your car back going straight. Hopefully you read this and find at least some of this helpful :D
in old rally cars like the 1960s the most important thing is to take a good line though the corners, because every time you have to take a longer line around the outside you lose about 2 seconds per corner. and by the way, you can use 30 minutes repair time without losing time in the standings. Hope I was able to help you :)
Hey Ben, a nice tip for rallygames is to throw the cars back a little bit at the corners an use power to kinda drift. And if you can recover the vehicle on your own, do it because if you automatically recover it could cost you less time...
Dunno if you've noticed, but odd stages are a one-way from A to B and even are the same previous one backwards from B to A. So you basically know the track every even stage.
Really enjoyed this episode and eager to see more! To go through the frustrations and excitement with you as you learn is great! Regarding sound levels, your commentary is great, but also interesting to hear copilot. I think just go with it, it's your game, you need to listen to directions more than we do. Do your thing! Thanks!!!
I haven't played DiRT Rally, but from my experiences in Dirt 1-3 it seems that you could perhaps be faster if: 1. Turn in earlier. Loose surfaces generally prefer a tighter racing line than an F1 circuit. 2. Change gears more often. It seems like you're very cautious about getting damage so you're holding back on shifting up on smaller-degree turns, as well as shifting down too slowly (and consequently too early) coming in tighter turns. The co-driver usually tells you the speed you should be going at, so you can be braver on both the gas and the brake. 3. Don't focus solely on the road, focus on pace notes. A lot of curves in rally stages have blind apexes and/or unseen obstacles. Believe in the pace notes, and take a leap of faith. Sometimes it might seem like you're turning into a cliff, but the smaller traction levels will make sure you don't crash and slide right around, touching the blind apex on the way out. 4. Throttle control is key when dealing with tougher corners. I'm not sure how to describe it except say that it'll probably get easier the more you play rally games. I imagine F1 games prefer smoother throttle control, but in Dirt 3 I found it was easier to rev around corners in a binary fashion. (Much like a D-Pad)
Don't cut all the parts out where you don't say anything, ben. I'm here for a fun commentary AND good driving. =) Raw game audio is fine for me as long as it isn't all stage long. An awesome series, please keep it going! cheers Edit: I even think it might be best to not cut the career mode stages at all - it isn't like in f1 where you know the track inside out and you cut the footage to not be too repetitive.
Actually i think you should consider recording the post comment after playing, if you want best results. It must be pretty hard to drive fast, and talk, having only some slight idea what is ahead of you.
Turn in a little earlier and force the car into oversteer to slide through and keep up more speed. You're losing time on each corner by slowing and driving like you're on tarmac. Cool video! Enjoying it so far
you drive very wel for the first time a good tip is that you need to brake before the turn otherwise your weels keep spinning and you crach , so keep that in mind and keep going ;-)
I dont expect an answer, but i really love your videos actually.. You sound so informal if that make sense, your not affraid of showing your misstakes and i appreciate that in videos. most youtubers nowadays pretend to be know it all and its really boring and it looks really scripted.. I am still waiting for a youtuber that makes videos unscripted.. I dont know if you script your videos, but you show your misstakes and errors and thats appreciative in my book.. subbed :)
very fun to watch mate! :) tips: 1. You have 30mins of "free" repair time every 2 stages, so use it!! 2. Make careful jumps and better brake before them. 3. Try to cut all corners except when the co driver tells you not to. 4. Repairs really don't cost much so really just do it every time :)
A tip for the hairpins from me watching after the second stage, use the handbrake. Get the backend out and try to slide through the hairpins to keep the momentum, I know it's weird sliding to gain time coming from F1, but in rally it works.
The best thing for me to do in rally games is to take the corners as close to the inside as possible. It gives the car more help with steering due to the gradient in the inside line compared to the other parts of the road. It helps me go into and out of corners quicker. Hope this helps somebody even if Ben doesn't see!!!
just an observation not criticism: you seem to take hairpins like a f1 driver. you might shave some tenths off your time with light tap of e-brake to help rotate around the bend.
Make sure to take note on the surface conditions before you start your stage! Heavy gravel is harder to turn through and may cause you trouble if you have a lot of momentum down a hill into a turn. Light gravel can make high speed turns feel a bit more slick and you may lose the backend easier. Cheers!
From what ive gathered on other rally games ive played you can go flat out through corners with 5's and 6's as long as they arent on a jump or big crest. Maybe try and get the back end of the car to slide out so you can carry more speed in and out of corners. However this might not be possible for the Mini at the moment. Are minis 2WD?
You'll be so much faster if you learn and then listen to your co-pilot's commands. In fact just not talking and driving will make you quicker, as we saw on that final stage. I reckon post-commentary or only commentating on the easier areas so you can concentrate when it gets difficult is the way forward. Loved it though, give us more!
use more handbrake in the slower corner, the mini is a front wheel drive car with shit handeling. It understeers like a shopping trolley, use the handbrake in the slower corners to point the car in the right direction and as soon as it's pointed the way you wanna go floor it. Also only use first gear to get going from a standstill, the shift time in this car is quite long and first gear only goes to like 30kph, 2nd gear will always be faster as long as you're moving.
Hi, thx for doing this serie. I love it! The way i drive rally is by steering a lot and to be heavy on the gas. Also try to learn to know what the navigator is saying because if you learn that you can drive these rounds with your eyes closed. Keep on going!
In the service you get 30 minutes to fix the car it doesn't add anything to race time. It's worth going onto the screen for it because it shows you all of the damage. Other than that enjoying it Ben!
If you know you have to turn and jump at the same time, chuck the car sideways before the jump so you land facing the right way instead of ploughing into the ditch on the outside
Fuck yeah! Tiametmarduk pßlaying DiRT Rallye! There IS a God after all! Edit: Yes, I would like to have some parts where you don´t talk. This game has such great sound, maybe do it like this: 3(+?) Stages per video 1 Stage talking 2nd stage gamesounds only 3rd stage talking finally a separate end where you go over what you´ve learned and whatever else you might want to chat about. Maybe you can show off single bits of replay that were particularly close or that you enjoyed the most!
hello ben, i have a driving tips for you in this game, if you come to the hairpins or another u turn, you must slow your car gradually and if the moment was right, use the handbrake for powerslide/drifting in the turn... thanks.. *and sorry if my english is so bad and you can't understand it... :)
Use the pace notes. For instance you went of on the 90 degree corner it says sq at the top of the screen and use the handbrake. 6 is the widest turn which is usually flat. I find 5 variable either lift or flat if you have humongous bollocks. 4 depends on what the car is and how good it is all you know is you have to break a little bit a 3 is a bit more breaking a I find myself taking a late apex works as those corners at tighter. 2 is very tight and alot for breaking and 1 is a handbrake. Also keep the whole event in 1 episode and tbh since I play the game I don't want to hear the pace notes but although the cars sound amazing!
Ben! Please make more videos of this game! I was also playing DiRT 3 and this is like flashback to past for me :) The game looks really nice, stages looks good! I'm looking forward for another rounds in this game :)
Great video mate! I would try it with the HUD off it just takes your eyes off the road most of the time and watch the tutorials if you haven't they explain a lot about rally theory
So some tips; You have to get away from the habit of using the breaks as much as you do in road racing. Here the handbrake is essentially as important, or even more important. If you just use the "regular" brakes so to say, you're gonna get heaps of understeer and your car is going to bog down a lot. If you don't feel comfortable using the handbrake I'd suggest giving your car some rear brake bias, so that it slides towards the apex with the front. It'll help you get around the corners faster. The 1960's cars are generally speaking pretty hard to get sliding, but it'll get increasingly important as you progress through the classes. There's really no reason not to repair your car when you get the chance. The cost of repairing your vehicle is not that much and almost never justifies not repairing it. Also, you can repair your car for up to 30 minutes without getting any time added on to your next stages result. That only happens if you decide to repair your car for longer than those 30 minutes. In the repair screen your mechanic(s) can give you a recommendation on what to repair, and what they recommend is almost always the optimal way to go. If you really want a challenge I'd suggest jumping in one of the Group B RWD cars. Those things are extremely difficult to control.
Ben, you GOT to repair your car everytime possible, seriously! And a rally event (what you would call a race) consist of stages, so you musn't call it a rally when you finish just one leg since the stage times are addend to eachother.
I really hope my enjoyment of this game is coming across in the video, something different from the usual F1 Stuff. hope you enjoy!
+Tiametmarduk How's your arms though? Have they ripped completely off your torso yet?
+deknegt Exactly.
+Tiametmarduk Who's paying u 2 drive this?
+Tiametmarduk drive closer to the edge of the track and break later
+Evan Harris It was Codemasters, it would have been part of the deal of letting him take part in the beta test for F1 2016
Pointers:
1: You get 30 minutes of free repair time, this won't add to your event time so use it!
2: Use the handbrake to whip the car into tight corners and hairpins, else you'll just slow to a halt in the gravel.
+deknegt ok sweet, cheers mate!
+Tiametmarduk You should get H-shifter, it is much easier to drive. Handbrake too.
I've just recorded the second episode, it'll be out in a few hours!
+Tiametmarduk its annoying how everyone takes the mini :P. i would say the lancia or reno are better cause they are RWD so less understeer and more fun to drive in general
+Tiametmarduk
I hope you'll talk less in that one :P
If you have replay put them it would be great
+Sidd kumar lancia is fwd:p
yaaay can't wait!
Andddd I've just recorded the third episode which will go out tomorrow xD.
+Tiametmarduk can't wait
indeed. we cannot wait. Personaly I love this series Ben. nice choise making a dirt rally series
+Tiametmarduk YES!
you spelled argolis right
IS THAT GLOCK????????
no, it's a boulder, i like that boulder.
Lol

I keep revving my car too much and having engine problems haha. Cost a fortune!
I know!
+ThatGuyNamedScott. C Engine failures does not exist in dirt rally.
TheNickmoura they do! Check the Rev counter you've got coolant and engine problems warning lights.
Look! Those Warning Lights are just iconic. It wont have any affect on your engine.
I like that Bolder. That is a nice a bolder. LOL
kimi räikkönens rally advice: just go!
Thanks for creating this I'm so glad that you mix this into your videos and keep this series going would be awesome :)
Yh, I would like pure gameplay, don't force yourself to commentate when you'd rather just concentrate. Commentate on easier areas aha.
This ^
This is great, can't wait until you get to group b, please upload another

You have 30 minutes of free time to fix your car in the service area. You can use it to save you repair money at the end.
I like this series already, my dad does (or rather did, race car needs fixing) a hillclimb every year. Please hurry and bring the next episode out!

Liking it Ben! You get 30mins free repair time though ;) cant wait for part 2 :)
Dunno if you've noticed, but odd stages are a one-way from A to B and even are the same previous one backwards from B to A. So you basically know the track every even stage.
Loved this even more than your usual f1 stuff. More of this ASAP please
always look at the pace notes, they'll give you everything you need coming up to the corners
Really enjoyed this episode and eager to see more! To go through the frustrations and excitement with you as you learn is great!
Regarding sound levels, your commentary is great, but also interesting to hear copilot. I think just go with it, it's your game, you need to listen to directions more than we do. Do your thing! Thanks!!!
i like this series keep on the good work and make more of these for sure

Ben, use handbrake at harpins in FWD. But not too much, just tap it. It really makes it easier to be faster through harpins
I love rally racing and I think turning the wheel really helps. You seem to have that part of you racing. Start with the basics! :D
Great video mate, keep up with this career mode, really enjoyable to watch!!
even your co-pilot says "don't cut"... uhm... BENNNN!???
btw. S. De Luca: nice Mercedes OP!!
Actually i think you should consider recording the post comment after playing, if you want best results. It must be pretty hard to drive fast, and talk, having only some slight idea what is ahead of you.
Makin popcorn.This shoud be good
Really enjoyable series Ben! Hope you keep recording it.
Always repair between stages, it doesn't cost you anything and as you get more crew members you can repair more in the time you have available.
Turn in a little earlier and force the car into oversteer to slide through and keep up more speed. You're losing time on each corner by slowing and driving like you're on tarmac.
Cool video! Enjoying it so far
Yeah it'll be nice to learn the co-pilot commands a little bit. Keep the uploads coming Ben
please keep on doing this i really enjoy it first time in a long time i have enjoyed a series
I love it! Still need to get the game myself. You convinced me I should do so real soon!
you drive very wel for the first time a good tip is that you need to brake before the turn otherwise your weels keep spinning and you crach , so keep that in mind and keep going ;-)

oh yeah and the single events are usually called stages, a rally is the whole event (greece, germany, ...) :)

loving this .. I suck so much at this game so it's nice to watch someone who is at least somewhat decent at it :D yes more please
just an observation not criticism: you seem to take hairpins like a f1 driver. you might shave some tenths off your time with light tap of e-brake to help rotate around the bend.
Personally I love rally and I think you might just wanna make the game sound louder.
Make sure to take note on the surface conditions before you start your stage! Heavy gravel is harder to turn through and may cause you trouble if you have a lot of momentum down a hill into a turn. Light gravel can make high speed turns feel a bit more slick and you may lose the backend easier. Cheers!
That edit at 12:06 tho! Hilarious as per usual!
Hoping to see more! You should watch the videos in main menu. They could teach you something.
Would love to see more of this!

Hi, thx for doing this serie. I love it! The way i drive rally is by steering a lot and to be heavy on the gas. Also try to learn to know what the navigator is saying because if you learn that you can drive these rounds with your eyes closed. Keep on going!
This is awesome ben, keep doing this!!!
Rallying Rule - Its not about the "position", its all about stage times!!
And
Always keep up with the pacenotes!!
you should have chosen the alpine because its rwd and with that its easier to throw around the corners
Loving this series Ben!
I really like the series, but I think that I would enjoy it even more by hearing a bigger portion of the car and co-driver.
Cheers!
A Rally is all the stages put together and a stage is just one track. Hope this clears it up Ben. :)
For the mini dont use 1st gear and use the handbrake to rotate the car
It's nice for you to do something different I love f1 but we all need a break every now and then . This is the perfect game. Keep it up Ben !
In the service you get 30 minutes to fix the car it doesn't add anything to race time. It's worth going onto the screen for it because it shows you all of the damage. Other than that enjoying it Ben!
Look up left foot braking and a Scandinavian flick. Hope this helps.
My first rally game was wrc 7 and i thoroughly enjoy it.
to change ur livery u have to use the left/right bumpers
Note to Ben FWD keep you foot when the back overtake the front
If you know you have to turn and jump at the same time, chuck the car sideways before the jump so you land facing the right way instead of ploughing into the ditch on the outside
Fuck yeah! Tiametmarduk pßlaying DiRT Rallye! There IS a God after all!
Edit: Yes, I would like to have some parts where you don´t talk. This game has such great sound, maybe do it like this:
3(+?) Stages per video
1 Stage talking
2nd stage gamesounds only
3rd stage talking
finally a separate end where you go over what you´ve learned and whatever else you might want to chat about. Maybe you can show off single bits of replay that were particularly close or that you enjoyed the most!
Enjoying it Ben!! Keep it going mate!!
hello ben, i have a driving tips for you in this game, if you come to the hairpins or another u turn, you must slow your car gradually and if the moment was right, use the handbrake for powerslide/drifting in the turn... thanks..
*and sorry if my english is so bad and you can't understand it... :)
I really like this series :D keep it up
nice video using the wheel feeling hope you are using a wheel of connoisseur and what kind of cockpit setup do you have
Use the pace notes.
I remember the 2005 mcrae rally days where you had the same repair system but without money, just time management
Ben! Please make more videos of this game! I was also playing DiRT 3 and this is like flashback to past for me :) The game looks really nice, stages looks good! I'm looking forward for another rounds in this game :)
Love that series, you seem's like me three years ago, when I started in rally games xD
Great video mate! I would try it with the HUD off it just takes your eyes off the road most of the time and watch the tutorials if you haven't they explain a lot about rally theory
I've been watching u for ages years
This was sick! Are you using the handbrake on hairpins? I don't mind if half the stage is game audio.
got to say your thumbnails always look sick no matter what video it is
Loving this series!
So some tips;
You have to get away from the habit of using the breaks as much as you do in road racing.
Bring the episodes out every day pls
i like how you put that shrek reference in there. i was thinking the same thing lol
tip : never go down to gear 1 in the mini, for some reason it wont turn in tight corners. and try to drift more. you can take the corners much faster
Your Mini goes so fast! My Fulvia takes forever just to accelerate..
Ben, you GOT to repair your car everytime possible, seriously! And a rally event (what you would call a race) consist of stages, so you musn't call it a rally when you finish just one leg since the stage times are addend to eachother.
Dirt rally youtuber championship is now required
Hey, Ben, try using the handbrake at the haripins, it'll be quicker that way
Love this game. Looking forward to more videos :)
