Hey, Thanks for the killer review, brother! Love your channel. Keep Rockin! 🤘
Thanks!
Well deserved Justin. Keep on chooglin.
Justin Johnson Gifted talent! Love it!
Justin, love your playing. I really enjoyed it.
Wicked cool dude! Seems like the ideal instrument for Southern Rock or Blues.🤘
This guy has plenty of videos of him playing a shovel, a cigar box, a one string Bo Diddley, acoustic and electric guitar. He has one of those talents you can't teach. He interviews very well, laid back, down to earth and mixes well with his audiences. Many of his audience bring along their own home made shovel and especially cigar box guitars for him to see and he does spend time with each looking them over. He is naturally a crowd favorite. He's the kind of guy you'd like to hang out with.
👍
@@wingsofpegasus Justin is exactly the guy you should get to know so when you come to America, you'll have a buddy to show you around Nashville.
True dat.
He's a People's guitar player. Very cool :).
Justin is absolutely incredible, if you haven't checked out his channel you are definitely missing out on some fantastic music.
The Ace Of Spade!!!!!!!
Jazz Cat He did do a cover of that song on the spade as a tribute to Lemme!
Christine Schmidt No shit!! I’m gonna check that out thanx!!!
😂👍
@@jazzcat8786 Christine is right and it's pretty cool!
@@jazzcat8786 and he does it justice!
Big fan of Justin..great picker and stringed instrument historian..cool dude
👍
Wicked right hand...insane intonation.
Thanks for taking a path less traveled Fil!
👍
It is absolutely insane the accuracy and timing.
I felt like I died and went to Heaven when I found that you reviewed Justin. His guitar skillz are insane!!!! You actually didn’t have to say a word, your facial expressions said it all. Yet you were somehow able to come out of the zone and expertly dissect all the techniques involved. Well done lad, we appreciate you!
He has that thumb mute down I love his Folsom prison blues.
Justin is just incredible. An absolute savant.
I CAN DIG IT!...Get it? He’s playing a shovel... never mind. Another great analysis Fil.
Ooooohhh!
I just so dig this and enjoying it here in new zealand
yes he is definitely ground-breaking, but some would rather be picky...
😂
Michael Moore very good but then one expects that of a Michael Moore 😁
Fil you're a great judge of talent and garden tools!
Haha thanks!
Ha that's so funny !!!!
That's a hilarious comment.
Wow , is this for real ???? By golly it is , he's playin a shovel . This is truly amazing ....and very good!!!!
👍
He plays a cigar box guitar as well. He builds them himself.
@@NBLP7001 he's pretty amazing . I love it !!!
Sandra Ard there is some unbelievable JJ stuff out there. Check out playing with his very tight band "Rumble Strippin" & "Malaguena" spring to mind
Thnx for giving props to Justin. He's a Beast on String. Whether it's 1,3,4,6,12 or more string, if he picks it up, you knów magic is gonna happen! And such a nice guy as well. My favourite blues artist for this era. Keep coming back to his tunes.
Yeah!!!Justin's nothing short of amazing and awesome.....I just discovered his channel this past spring......if ya love slide guitar your gonna love this guy......excellent player....composer.....as well as just a great down to earth personality.......he's got stuff for beginners on up to learn and enjoy......I was so impressed I immediately bought all 4 of his cd's.......and everyone of them are really great....one of them's theme is music for a western movie soundtrack........I was never to exposed to country western coming from California as I am......and still I'm really not that familiar with the genre......was always rock n blues for me.....that album is so kick -ss ........I swear its now one of my favorite albums ever.....just when I was thinkin music's kinda died.....those good old days are over mindset ....this guy gave me a nice wake up shot.....tellin me.....the days are what we make em.....everyday can be a good old day
Cool!

Justin is a great guitarist. He plays so many kind of guitars, even a gas can guitar.
Listening to hundreds of guitarists over the years.. I've followed Justin for years... keep an eye on the wide range of instruments and styles of music... I believe we are witnessing one of the best in the world.
Its clean and it's flawless no matter if its 3 strings or 12 or anything in-between.
This guy is a freaking genius man!
Thanks fil for giving justin some ecposure. Hopefully guitar fans will check him out
I have never seen someone actually play a shovel before! So glad I came across this video on your channel. Very impressive!
It's never the guitar, it's always the operator. Sometimes, though, you need a prop for your show. Available are shovels, oil cans, cigar boxes, so you can write songs about minerals, cars, and smoking. Best are things that come out of nowhere, like this. Awesome!
He actually sells the shovel guitars. He also sells some awesome looking Tele style guitars that are made from Jack Daniels whiskey barrels (they're made by "Big D" guitars). So freakin cool!👍😎🎸🎶
Thanks for showcasing Justin Johnson. In a just world he would be a household name. Makes it seem so effortless. It's worth watching (and listening to) everything he does. I hate him.
😂👍
I really enjoy your channel. So happy I ran across it the other day. I'm from Arkansas in north America. We had some great players from this state over the years. Thank you this brings me so much happiness
ARKANSAS!!! me too! Makes me wanna get my bed panjo and learn how to play it lol
I'm just barely learning now too :) just but a cheap guitar and a pawn shop and watch some vids!!! You'll learn faster than you think if you just keep at it
Wishing you good with it
Thanks!
I’m from Arkansas too. I’m up in NWA. We do have some great musicians from our state. We’ve been entertaining ourselves since 1834!! That’s when my family came to Benton county.
I really enjoy Fil’s channel.
Phil, I'm glad you talked about the guitar's construction. It's obviously a well crafted instrument made by someone who really knows what works. Justin's known for his blues playing on cigar box guitars (CBG's), but he's so well known that builders will make instruments just for him. Anyway, back to the shovel guitar. The level of knowledge, creativity and craftsmanship to make an instrument of this quality is impressive. In its own way, much harder that making a "regular" guitar because that process is well known. A shovel guitar is literally re-inventing the wheel. Also, thanks for highlighting Justin Johnson. If better known, RS might have considered him for their top 100 list....... Slide guitar's probably my favorite style of playing because it's the most emotive, especially blues slide. It'd be awesome if you do another JJ video of him playing one of his 4 string CBG's in a Delta blues style. You talk a lot about how musicians are able to be emotive through their instrument, and there is no better example of that than blues slide guitar. Of course there are lots of players that do a great job but JJ's videos are easy to find, the CGB's are way cool and he's a master at the style. Looking forward to it.
Thanks Chad!
He builds his shovel three strings himself right down to making the pickup. Justin Johnson!!!!!! You can get one of guitars numbered with a letter of AUTHENTICITY!!!!
Don’t believe there’s a Stringed Thing out there that Justin can’t play ..... Such Talent... Keep on “Keepin On” Justin Johnson We Love You Man.....
I like Justin, he's the sort of guy who likes to call a spade a....Guitar?.....
The instrument actually could go by several names. Gunbri. Lotar. Gabusi. Lotar. Except it's electric, so it doesn't have the hollow body those have.
Brilliant!
To All RUclips his "Rumblestrippin".... No disappointments :-). I subscribed, he a lunatic on guitar, always playing different guitars. "Tune your shovels at home...." damn funny Fil.
😂
Thanks WOP, my first experience with this musician and I love his music. Thanks for the introduction...
Guy's a genius, obviously. Incredible guitar player.
Justin is very talented yes but he is also blessed with much natural ability that just can't be taught. That being said I certainly don't want to take anything away from his hard work and dedication to his craft, he churns out so much good stuff and is one of a kind.
ROFL ..... first time I've heard of and seen him. He'd fit right in with Bluegrass musicians. He proves that true talent will show itself whether a guitar or shovel. He's very good!
👍
I agree..he's great...you also might like juzzie Smith and seasick Steve. A couple more of my favourites. Enjoy
Will do Bill. I really appreciate off beat talent. If you can master those you know they can flat tear up traditional instruments.
Yeah clay...just look him up bro...he has alot of stuff out there. Been watching him for years...doesnt really need Fils promotion...but all exposure is good.(no offence to Fil). But he is refined at what he does. He has a small, limited edition collection of personalized get fiddles for sale. Amazing thing...not overpriced. He just jams. Dont think hes trying to make big quid from the sales...from the looks in his videos, he comes from a well-to-do household...thrives from a good gene pool and has natural born talent that most people are jealous about. Yeah....but fuck....the world needs people like him to remind us less talented people that the world is a good place to be. Live long and....jam out loud!!!!!! (You can use that line..hahaha)
All my Kin folk are from deep south! Bluegrass through n through! Your right bout this guy! My Aunt plays the washtub, that's who keeps band in time! First time I seen her play I thought it was funny, had no idea of how things worked!
I love the sound that comes from this, just something you make with anything else
one of my favorite blues musicians! Like the one video, where he stomps his shovel into the lawn after he’s done. Epic.
Yeah!! He played Mototheads Ace Of Spades. He recently played a jerry jug guitar made by a fan from Australia. Awesome.
Have you heard him playing Whiskey Sippin Music Laid back Delta Blues, I love that sound. I've always loved this sound strange for someone who is Welsh!
Its had nothing to do with, where you come from,i m portuguese and i love how he plays the blues
Wow, Fil! Great find! Justin gets better intonation on his manure shovel than I get on my Gibson. (Damn Gibson). I’m really digging his clawhammer right-hand technique. You are getting a heap of puns in these comments. We need another shovel.
Samantha Thomas....hi girl!...how are ya?... I have never heard of Justin Johnson I'll have to go check him out thanks to Fil!!
Lori Pond Yes, he is new to me, as well. I guess he’s well known across the pond. Er.... in the UK, I mean.
Haha yep!
He plays tons of weird stringed instruments. Check out his performance playing "The Ace of Spades" w a spade shovel, literally haha! He's does a haunting tune of some word German thing and it's brilliant.
I'll admit, Fil, you stay on your game! JJ is a hidden gem in the world of RUclips.
Great find, and bang on analysis, Fil! Been watching Justin's channel for a while, and it's amazing!
I have a shovel signed and built by Justin! The frets are painted on the handle for reference. His channel is my favorite slide and blues channel hangs down!
You see ,I told you to check out Justin Johnson! That dude can play the living hell out of anything with strings on it! Glad you finally did one of his videos!
I've been watching his channel for a long time I just never thought you do a reaction to this so I never bothered asking. Very talented guy
I get to all the requests eventually!
...ran across Justin recently and he is amazing... thanks for exposing him to other RUclipsrs...I'm sure he appreciates it and his new fans will, too...
Cutter
No problem!
ive been playing for quite a while but only picked up a slide in the last year. justin's channel ,and one particular live stream he did, has been the most helpful thing for me. he broke it down so well and in such a clear way to an old head player. i'd love to sit down with this dude for a week and pick his brain.
👍
My first time back on Wings in months, after losing my wife to suicide. I couldn't bear to see your beaming face, Fil. I'm slowly emerging from the shadows. Your line about tuning up your shovel was a real pick-me-up. I've also subscribed to Justin for some time. Music is so healing. Cheers.
I'm sorry to hear that. It's good to have you back ☺
Sorry to hear of this. We have also had similar casualties in our camp over the last year. So sad. Stay strong. If you are going to lose yourself, lose yourself in the music...Its a good place and very healing. Stay strong my friend.
@@agoogleuser3787 So very true. Thank you for the kind words, both of you. It's been a long road back to "normalcy". I'm trying my best. Music has been a big help. Cheers.
Sir, I don’t know you at all. My deepest condolences to and your loved ones. I don’t have any magical words or powers to make things better. I just want you to know you are not alone. I think you will find there are a lot of folks in this world willing to reach out to you. Peace
@@Johnc259 And to you, sir, my deepest gratitude. Your words are greatly appreciated. Fil attracts a good crowd. All the best, John.
Finally giving Justin a look see. Awesome artist!
👍☺
Justin also plays a mean skateboard.
I remember seeing him on YT some time back. Man, such simple licks but he has such good timing and bottom line is if it sounds good. It doesn't matter if he put strings on a dolphin and played, as long as it sounds good, it is good!! dammit, his thumb is as long as my middle finger. Reminds me of Les Claypool some.
Aww that's so sweet he likes your review I can always tell if you really love something you have a big smile and your head goes back and forth to the rhythm
Been following Justin Johnsons channel for quite some time now, he's a fantastic player!
No better way to dig the blues than with a JJ shovel!!!
😂👍
I love Justin Johnson's playing! He is awesomely talented!
Thanks for featuring Justin on your channel. Justin Johnson is the real deal to use a much hackney phrase. He has so many great videos. I've seen/listened to them all. He has it all great intonation, great technique and most important he's got the feel. He could play with any of the past masters. Watch him in the title below, You'd guess this is from the 1930s' or 40s' beautiful.
Jack White's Third man Man Records 1947 Voice-o-Graph Record Booth "The Red Road" By Justin Johnson
Thanks!
Saw Justin play at Berkeley Bob's Coffee House in Cullman Al. 4or5 years ago! Amazing performance!
I got to see him play a couple of times here in Nashville. He uses a looping machine to layer each song. He does a percussive part, then a bass part, a rhythm part, then he plays lead. He had several guitars that he used; everything from a Sitar Guitar to a one-string Diddly Bow. And of course the shovel guitar.
Cool!
No shit! 👍🏻👍🏻
Justin is so good he could string up a rock put on a hum bucker with the tremolo and make it sound good👍😎🍺🎼🎸🇺🇸🇱🇹
Friendly Reminder to All ...
Justin Johnson just Passed RUclips's 1 Million Subscriber Mark

Wow Fil, I just discovered this amazing and talented music man tonight. So nice to see you know about him. Justin is the bomb!!
SPADES OF TALENT I cannot be the first to say it. Love people who are Inventive with music.
Yep!
I’m glad someone said it. Great playing , a very nice review but I prefer to call a spade a spade. For everyone else stop calling it a shovel 😁 please.
JJ is incredible. He doesn’t even need guitar face to sound great.
Everything Justin does blows me away ! I listen to him all night long at work !!
Thanks for doing Justin, he's very talented and I really enjoy his videos
G'day Phil, I love your reviews. I have seen a heap of Justin Johnson's videos. The track I like the best is "Heavy Swamp Blues" played on a proper fretless guitar. I would like to see you review on that video please.
Thanks!
Just when I think I'm starting to make progress playing guitar, someone comes along with a shovel, and just kills it.
Lol, this guy is good
I recently moved to Nashville. I saw his first video about three years ago. Somehow about a month ago, I watched a few of his videos including a session he did. "Where's this guy from? Nashville? Sounds like he needs a better bass player." Then I find out he has a proper workshop. My kind of guy. I'm gonna chase him down soon and see if I can't get involved. Wish me luck.
“If you want to tune your shovels at home . . .” 🤣
Great analysis as always, Fil!
Great video....been watching Justin for a few years my favorite delta blues man.....u have the best rock guitar on the RUclips...rock on brother✌
🤘
The guy is brilliant!! Really innovative and sounds awesome! Who needs a strat or a Gibson! You can do some gardening and then go jam! Lol! This is something else Fil...quality! Cheers Mario!😳😳🤘🤘
🤘😁
I like everything about Justin Johnson.
I'm happy i discovered him a while ago.
His buddy at the camera does an excellent job as well.
Justin FTW! ^^
Loved this one Fil. Fantastic to discover someone like Justin, but even better to have you to show appreciation and use your insight to verbalise the amazing things taking place here
I met him at Sweetwater Fest last summer. He seems like a good guy and a great player. He is very tall!
Cool!
Whenever I watch Justin play I just wanna take my guitar and dig a hole with it in my backyard then toss it in, bury it, and walk away with my head hung low. The dude is phenomenal. I've shown that video to so many friends that are blown away. What an amazing gift.
You can't see them in this video, but there are faint fret markings on the shaft of the shovel. Also, Justin sells these shovel guitars and the ones he sells have the fret markings much more clearly marked. Not to take anything away from Justin's amazing playing. He does in fact have a video out there where he's actually playing a fretless guitar and it's absolutely amazing.
I was really worried that you were going to give JJ a bad critique. Glad to hear you are as impressed with him as the rest of us. Keep Rockin'!
I need a way to see who gave this vid a thumbs down so I can cuss them out. And if they are within 50 miles of me, BEAT THEIR ASS !!! Lol. This guy is GREAT !!! Thank you Fil, for sharing !!!
I believe he had them for sale on his website.
You're right, Justin is all about keeping the rhythm/groove rock solid, then adding melody on top. A great player.
Fil thanks for featuring Justin. Hardly a day goes by when I don't listen to Justin he is amazing. I will pitch again for you to look at Mark Kroos doing Dueling banjos.
Thanks! It's on the list!
Howdy, loved your show and I love Justing playing all his weird guitars especially his newest one; a gasoline can
Yes, I've watched and I loved it. Talent on serious steroids.
Holy crap! A shovel! The dude is playing a shovel!! WITH 3 STRINGS!! Everyone else go home! He just won everything! Now...would one play ukulele music on a hand trowel?
😂👍
Dave i`m sure he could.. you make it , he will play
That is worth experimenting with. Maybe even a garden trowel turned into a fiddle.
He's got a video playing a guitar made from a jerry can
People are born slide players. This guy is one of them. Great revue Fil!! Always positive. The reason l watch you!plus the new artist!! Thanks. Stay healthy!!
Just goes to show, a true artist cannot be stopped or limited. It has to, and will come out, be it a shovel, a trash can, or a light bulb. I envy the artists talent but love that I can appreciate them for their mastery.
Also, that boy knows how to pick a shovel by God! That's how we do it down south!
Yeah!
Props to Justin for getting such good sound out of a shovel. I can't get that good of sound out of a guitar. Much Respect Justin for your skills
😅👍
That guy plays cigar box guitars alot too. Great videos. Mesmerizing playing
👍
He also plays an ammo case. Plays Lynyrd Skynyrd on as well! The boy’s got talent that for sure
Ona man! With 3 strings! On a shovel!! And yet he's managing to track this amazing slide playing with rhythm, bass and percussion parts all at the same time! Immense talent!
Mississippi swamp devil alligator music, naked wimmin, smokin' tires.
Justin's skill level is off the charts playing a fretless shovel ... I'm dumb founded ...
Thank you for doing Justin, justice. Way-2-Go, mate.
Thanx for the great review Fil. Justin deserves recognition from other professionals like you. Justin's talent and skill is at the next level. Peace, keep rockin.🙂
"If you want to tune your shovels at home...." LOL!!!! Well Dayam!
If you're interested in that sort of thing.... Seasick Steve. He has a song about how to do it with one string as well as has an interesting backstory
Yes he's here somewhere!
Just came across this guy tonight looking up finger style picking. He was sitting on his front porch and gave a very good lesson. That lead to two more hours of watching all of his videos that I can fit in and now I’m gonna be dog tired tomorrow at work! Well worth it! 👍👍✌🏼🎸
I have seen him play before on his RUclips channel and I’ll tell you if it has strings on it he can play it. He’s also a very nice humble young man.
Insane. I love it. Makes spoons look a little passe "don't it?". (Tho nothing against spoon playing of course). 😁 Emily Liberty
😂👍
Gotta love my hillbilly roots. I'm a little off beat. And, Fil, string up your shovel and do a cover for us. 😜
Yes, I have to admit I have hillbilly roots. When I was younger I used to stick my fingers in my ears. I was more of a rocker, but the hillbilly music was a part of my every day life. I remember hearing about the use of wash boards, jugs, and shovels. But, never seen the shovel in action.
@@melissamorris8046 we have a bit in common. I have a much broader appreciation than I had in my youth.
@@justMe-zl4pu Yes, I do too now. More so for the older stuff believe it or not. It seems like lately it is just sounding all the same. But, I can look back and I do have more appreciation for the stuff I had to listen to when I was younger. Trust me I lived in a loud house. lol
Haha! I'm off to the hardware store! 😂
@@wingsofpegasus You can buy his shove guitar on his website as well as chord books for 3 and 4 string instruments. So much fun !!! I hope you get one.
Justin is the reason I started building cigar box guitars also shovels and hubcaps guitars. I never wanted to play any instrument until I found his channel.
He can play anything with strings.
Justin Johnson, Samantha Fish, Seasick Steve and a few others have kinda gone back to roots instruments.
Great review
Thanks
No problem!
Justin is a great example of the difference between creative talent and ability. Plenty of guitarists with ability, very rare are the ones with both. Thanks again for an awesome video Fil.
No problem!
He would have fit right in with the Ozark Mountain Daredevils.
👍
Dang great comment.....love the OMD
CAN YOU DIG IT?✋😲
YES WE DIG IT 😀😁😂😃😄😅
CAN YOU DIG IT ✋😲
YES WE CAN DIG IT💥👍😅👍😄👍😃👍😁👍😀💥
He's is in the Ozarks, the devil has nothing on him. He is pure talent with a love for strings.
Justin could play a pair Nikes if the strings were tight.
I'm a huge fan of Justin as I have been a Cigar Box guitar builder for many years. His playing is my main inspiration to stay in the business.
Keep up the good work. I learn a lot from your explanations, and I am learning the slide from some of Justin's video instructions. He is a very good teacher explaining the many aspects of good slide guitar.
He is an instrument!
I wait a jam with the spoon lady!!!
😂
She is pretty amazing
Justin Johnson is AWESOME! So glad to see you feature him!
👍
Justin is so gifted.
