Justin Johnson shows how to play his shovel guitar as part of George Parfitt's Winston Churchill Fellowship, exploring cigar box guitars and other handmade instruments to see how they could potentially benefit the youth of our societies.
Not only is he an incredibly talented player, he is very articulate and well-spoken. Nice job explaining the process so even a lay-person could understand what's actually happening while he's playing.
Well said (no pun intended).
👏👏👏
So true, on all points of your comment
@@Jarod1941 🤣

👏👏👏
Justin,
you have a gift for playing.
You have a gift for teaching!!
And, thank you for sharing that gift!!!
He's in a class all by himself. My utmost respect.
LEGEND…You are a Master
Why? Because he can play a shovel? I am not impressed at all. Who gives a shit. Would you be impressed if i made a guitar out of an oak stool in my living room? Point is it's not what it's being played on. He isn't going to make this amazing music because it's a shovel. You are simping for a gimmick
@@gregw6442 lol. Master. Hardly a master. He made a guitar out of a shovel. Thats not called being a master thats called doing dumb shit for views so people like you can feed his ego. Who cares. Its a shovel. Oooooo he is playing a shovel. Wow amazing. Any jackass can play a shovel bro
Justin que lindo que suena tu música con los distintos instrumentos que armas para que sea 1 guitarra!!!!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
This is an *amazing* amount of theory, history, instruction etc. - several months (years?) of info in just over 4 minutes.
That is truly impressive.
I wake up to Justin johnsons music everyday I don't have very much at all but when I put your music on I can do anything and it makes me rich beyond my wildest dreams it gets me through all things thanks thank you Justin your the best, and I mean it. God bless you
You wake up to someone playing a stupid shovel? Your life must suck
I hope you are rich still.
Justin Johnson is by far my favorite guitar player. I was never into it until Justin - and the 3 string guitar just got me, I don’t own one yet but I will , it will be my fist instrument ever.! I don’t come from a musical family . I’m 40 and this instrument just gets me. Thank you
So do you have one now?
Yes, i'm also interested if you have one now :)
Btw, isn't fretless guitar hard to start from at the very beginning?
Hang in there because it’s definitely a cool feeling once you get one. Had mine for going on 3 years. You will achieve this goal.
Why play 3 strings? Are you that big of a loser you can't play 6.
Wish I found this 5 years ago when I first started, this is by far THE most helpful shortcut to learning quickly.
No its not. Playing a shovel is for idiots. Pick up the real thing.
This video packed way more of an INFORMATION punch than expected! Excellent explanation, and such a fantastic sound!
One word says it all " AWESOME "
What a sweet, forlorn sound. Great tutorial, history lesson and more. Thanks for posting.
The Man Speaks 😮👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯 Justin, you are the Best 🔥✨✨⚡⚡
Anytime I see you touch a 3 string shovel I got to watch,I play blues harmonica, you know, keep rocking brother!!!!!😎👍🎶
Get the feeling this guy could get a good sound outta a spiders web
right?
This is very cool! Really liked the sound and that sustain.
Well done! I was sold on the shovel guitar the moment I heard one played. It's basic & simple easy to pick three strings. Most amazing its soulful!
How cool that thing would be when having a Pils sitting at the garden with some people and you like "Hey! Obey me!" 🤭
Very cool! Love how that instrument sounds!
Anything in your hands sounds like angel's voice...
this guy rules! such sensitivity and insight.
He sure does! It was such a pleasure to spend time with him.
Well said Aaron!!
Aaron Clodfelter
well yeah... he doesn't "rule" tho'..... corporations and banksters rule....
Aaron Clodfelter..as others have remarked, his music is amplified by his intellect. Astoundingly haunting blues!
How is playing a potato digger sensitive? Its a stupid shovel. You guys all ass kissing this guy is ridiculous. Its about music not about if you can play music on a garden tool. Oh. I sang through a microphone that was made out of a sprinkler head arent i awesome? You idiots.
I agree very incredibly talented.
Very blessed. Like I've said before. It's like the souls just enter. God bless you brother and keep up the good work.
God bless America
Love the sound.❤
Educational, inspirational and creative jam session, keep on brother!
This guy. THIS FREAKIN GUY! I swear Justin could play a tennis racket...
At this point, Justin Johnston's name should be popping up on every "Greatest Guitarist" list.
Thanks for a very great lesson!!!
Brilliant, a maths teacher once taught us KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid, in age having done that (Kept it simple) I stepped back and realised how complicated my working ended up looking. Thanks for the video I really enjoyed it, Stefan, Jersey, Channel Islands
I liked that alot. I'm go make myself one of those now haha wish me luck
Did you do it?
done?
Did you do it ?
Wow, made me smile listening to the blues you were playing, here in England a shovel is nicknamed a "banjo" on building sights, fuckin incredible sound.
Enjoy listening to you play mate whatever you've got😁👍🎶
Justin, you are the coolest of the cool! Dude, you have TALENT! Thank you so much for sharing your great music.
How is playing a shovel talent? Any jackass can play a shovel
It's a. #2. Shovel which I used as a gandy dancer on a mid-western railroad to replace old ties.
:41 I love how you make it cry...
Wow, I love the sound.
I dig it!! My friend makes cigar box 🪕s, you are awesome at your crafts.
Hey,hi . I'm over 70. I wish I knew you. I hope this RUclips stuff pays the bills for you. You seem like a great young feller.
Justin I enjoy your talent and your music. I hope Nikki relayed to you I received my Shovel Guitar. It’s perfect and Thank You again for your help. Roland Vietnam Vet. God Bless my Friend.
Anyone else come here because of Wings of Pegasus? Awesome stuff Justin! Amazing. Damn, I want to make one now and learn to play like you. I can dream!
How did you go, did you end up making one...it was 10 months and a pandemic...?
You make it look so easy.
Guy: You've got a true talent
Justin: No it's a True Temper
😂😂😂😂😂
Ace is the place with the helpful guitar folks
Thats just beatiful man!
This guy really has a good understanding of things
AND a really good ability to explain his understanding.
¡AND real enthusiasm!
"...it's a tool..." In the end aren't we all tools? :D
Once again Mr J.J. proves he's a genius.
I've never even held one of those guitars in my hands, yet I already know how to play it. That's because I play by ear. If I can hear it I can play it. Had a friend one time who played piano, but he was what they call "note bound." which means that without the sheet music up there in front of him he couldn't play. Of course, I might not be able to now because of the arthritis in my hands, but then slide on my lap is probably what I'd be confined to these days. Had an old simi hollow body guitar one time, and I took the nut off of it and replaced it with a raised nut in order to get the strings up off of the fretboard. I learned a bunch of songs, including "In My Time Of Dying," and, "When The Levee Breaks," just to name a couple. Yeah, that sounds good. I like that.
Kinda bragging a little here huh
Big Up Justin and thankyou.
Fred Hammond & RFC - "Let The Praise Begin." Throwback song.
I really enjoy this! Perhaps I will have a go at building one sometime.
Heh, how to turn a shovel into an axe....
Oh man! I MELTED when you played those chords!
So simple yet so amazing. Love your videos
How is that amazing? You can make a guitar out of anything. You know what? Only an actual guitar is the real thing. Click bait
Have fun keeping that in tune.
WOW! The man can play a shovel. ❤
Maaaaan... the tone...
Can't wait to play mine. That's Bad ass. Thanks again for talent
QUE HERMOSO TOCA ESTE MUCHACHO, SE PARESE MUCHISIMO A MI NIETO , ME PASO HORAS ESCUCHANDOLO!
I could listen to him all day
This instrument is similar to a Japanese shamisen, which is a three strings instrument.
Shamisen is tuned differently for each song.
Hey Dude! I really can't play a guitar... but i really love many kinds of music.... as an example elmore james... muddy waters.... mark knopfler and all the good players we may think of. Until the moment I first see you play these nice songs on a fuckin shovel, I tought all the good musicians are dead or pretty old. Thank you for rescue of the music-world!
love elmore james nice taste, stevie ray is my fav
Brilliant, beautiful, inspirational!
So good!
Sounds like lightning boy on the movie crossroads.,, Arlen Roth.
I'd have fun for hours playing this!
I have a 3 string strum stick & some times I play it for days it's real fun. it's almost like my 1 string Banjira Gopichand (google it) but when I pick it up I play it for hours it's real fun & it drives everyone nuts!!!
Justin has really got me thinking that a slide guitar like this might be easier for me to master than a conventional one. I'all about "muscle memory", the same thing you use to master the harmonica.
@@jeromebreeding3302 yup
Нравится творчество,всегда с интересом и удовольствием смотрю Ваши ролики,успехов и всего доброго!
He makes a gardening tool sound better than my expensive guitar.....doh
Man, talk about picking the right tool for the job! :D Mate, you take cool to a different level... with that tool. ;) Love it.
FANTASTIC! Great instruction.
You are the best guitar player I have ever heard I would love you to come to Massachusetts

So cool, wow
Yes Justin Thank you 💙
"Now I can tell you're a real music type young fella, good lookin boy too, know what you're talkin about!"
Justin, I could watch your video's all day long. I grew up with a guy like you but he gave his life to drug's and alcohol. He taught me a few thing's. One was how to remember the open E on guitar. Every Acid Dealer Gets Busted Eventually. Lol! See what I mean?
Soo talented..very nice.. I love hearing you play..
That feeling on campus when you stumbled into the wrong lecture session😅
and stayed because you were actually interested.
And....being a shovel, it comes with a “Lifetime Guarantee”!!
😃👍
What do u tune the shovel to ?
Do I have to worry about shock with the electric shovel ?
Do you have seminars to teach shovel playing ?
Can u dig it ?
It will be open tuning as no frets ... maybe G?
Do they have left-handed shovel guitars.? What about a 12 string snow shovel guitar.?
@@kymcha You nailed it. It's GDG.
Awesome sounds brother

I want to know what the 3 strings are tuned to. This guy is brilliant 👏🏽
Brilliant? Go get good at guitar that is brilliant. Playing a shovel is stupid
Always love your videos man. I probably should've figured you'd have a RUclips. I've been watching everything on facebook.
Edit: Noticed this wasn't actually his channel, but he was the one who linked it to his fb.
This was made by George Parfitt for his Winston Churchill Fellowship, researching cigar box guitars and roots instruments in America.

I’m interested in seeing how the electronics are out together
Diddly Bo
Fence wire on porch post, tuned by block of wood as nut, bottle neck for a slide
wonderfull thanx
Cool!
The bassline bit reminds me of the start of the film they live, where he's looking for work?
What an awesome man!!!
en Argentina sobran palas. mañana tendré que salir a comprar una a la constructora más cercana ya que estos poseen las de mejor calidad. por cierto también tengo varias guitarras y pienso que el sonido de la pala del video es brillante, me sorprende, me encanta.
Over the top cool!!!
And magically when he starts playing, the wind blows through his hair…
This is Daisy, his girlfriend. I turned on the fan.
Interesting question here. How does that thing have an electric pickup thing?
I WANT THIS GUITAR!!!
Makes me think of Zeppelins “In My Time Of Dying”...
So awesome 🙏🏼🇨🇦
Would love to know how it is tuned etc... what strings too
