In this video we will be looking at how putters work. Will will be looking at what companies are saying about the putters and what is actually happing to us when we use them.
This video should give you some more information on how putters work and how they can work for you when you are looking to buy a new putter.

You all need to check out the Edel videos on putters. The influence of head shapes, lines, grips on aim. And weighting it correctly to get the right speed control. So some but kinda mindblowing
I'll be getting a newport 2.5 special select, I'm an 18 handicap. I genuinely do not care if it's not suited to me immediately, I get the one I want. If I need to make it work I'm happy to do that haha I just always wanted to have that classic style of of Scotty. I don't think I'm alone. love the content guys, keep it up 💪

Interesting but you didn’t mention the effect of putter length and lie. I just went for a fitting on the SAM putt lab and went from a 35” face balanced spider mallet thicker grip with 4 deg loft and 69 deg of lie to a 33.5” Sik Flo C standard grip with plumbers neck 45 deg toe hang 1.5 deg loft and 73 deg lie. I liked the swing weight (F10 415g lower CG) over the Scotty Camerons. For me the putter length seemed to affect everything else. I really wanted a Scotty blade but the data said otherwise. This was a major change but I was compensating for the length of the Spider which led to inconsistency in my putting. I won’t have my new Sik for a couple more weeks so won’t know real on course results until then. Putter fitting is a neglected part of club fitting so keep exploring this on the channel. I am also trying to improve my putting skills and wanted to take the putter out of the equation. Cheers!
Toe hang is a manifestation of putter head CG position relative to the shaft axis. More toe hang = higher MOI about the rotational axis of the putter shaft. The face balanced putter is “easier” to manipulate open and closed, just like playing a small bladed iron, due to the reduced MOI about the shaft axis. The opposite for the del mar. Of course we are talking about small margins here so the player can easily close and open any putter face, but they are certainly different from a physics perspective. Would be happy to expand or discuss further if there’s interest!
Dan, how about just before the shop opens again you get Lester to give us a guided tour to let us see all the new gear available on the shelves waiting for the golf hordes around the country to buy ! I am sure there are others like me eager to see what might catch our eye. Lester being a feel player is the butt of the jokes but being a plus handicap golfer, the skills don't lie !
Wise words Dan. Putters are such a 'looks' and 'feel' purchase. I've been told at a fitting in the past that I need a face balanced putter because of my swing, however, I don't like the look of them and put well with toe hang putters. It's all madness....

I've never had a putter fitting, I can tell with in 3 or 4 puts if I like it. I've got both types of putter & I alternate them, they all work fine. I won't be having any fittings, I trust myself to find a putter that works & I like the way it looks.
I play a different putter every week and when I change, after a few putts I'm happy to go.
Good work on this video! I've felt the whole toe-hang vs face-balanced thing was a load of rubbish for ages.
To me a putter is a CoG on the end of the stick, line the CoG up with the ball and swing the putter.
Most people will learn to putt with any putter if they like the look and feel. Personally, I have had lots of different putters through the years, and maybe because I'm not that good or just that I'm stubborn I have had different putting strokes that matched the feel and feedback I was getting from each other the putters at the time

Ping anser putters used them for years slight toe hang..tbh I just like that style putter not busy nice and simple ..found with mallets I pulled putts👍👍

At last! This is the best vid for putting you have ever done. From this point it also comes down to miss Tendencies for fitting.
First decent putter I bought was from American Golf. A random bag of putters on a false green to try. The first one I picked I holed out 3 times in a row and used it for the next 20 years. My son bought me an odyssey this year or it would still be in the bag. (My very first putter was a banana shaped lump of brass on a stick and it worked very well).
From my small foray into putters I think the grip is more important than the design. I’ve got from a ping pp59 grip to a super stroke 3 and I think it’s made a massive difference. I’d like to see a grip change video to see if you get the same.
I played a Ping Anser 2 for a long time but was struggling with putting & went for a fitting, this resulted in a change to a face balanced putter. With the Ping, strike was consistent but toward the heel, with face balanced putters, strike has the same consistency but a more central location.

Interesting although not sure that straight back straight through exists there is always some arc to a stroke. Would be interested in a comparison with a torque balanced putter as well.
Only had 3 putters my whole golflife (30+ years). Just bought the Odyssey Marxman S, last summer strictly on feel and looks, and it has not disappointed me. Usually a pretty decent putter and has never been the putting that ruined my rounds.
Well done. This is the first time I have ever seen an experiment to prove/disprove the theory on toe hang vs face balance and it is also massively overdue. Personally I have never believed the marketing dialogue surrounding the subject because it simply doesn't make sense - No matter how many times I hear it, it doesn't make it the case.👍👍👍
I tended to pull putts, I had a slight-toe hang Bettinardi (15°). I did a SAM putter fit and found that I have an arc and needed a 30°-45° toe hang putter. I now have an Odyssey StrokeLab 7 with a 35° hang and it is now point and shoot.
Makes me want to go get a putter fitting now as I am questioning my previous purchase. Great video lads

Thanks for the great video on this topic. I own an assortment of putters and I find I can putt well (or bad) with any style. I have used toe hang blades, anser style, and face balanced mallets with equal success and failures. Your explanation makes perfect sense to me. Thanks again!!
Nice video, greatly enjoyed Lester’s expressions, absolutely priceless. As for me, I have been using the same Dunlop putter for 25 years, the handle is held together with plastic tape, I average 28 putts a round and play off 4 handicap. The putter works well for me and I see no reason to change. I pay no attention to what the makers say at all.

I play a toe hang. Ping Anser 2x It is an Anser with a longer neck than a regular Anser. It doesn't toe hang as much as a regular Anser. It is about halfway between a face balanced and a full toe hang.

I was once told that the best putter for an individual is the one that they can line up square to start and return to square at impact ignoring whether it should fit a certain stroke or not.
Play 2 mid flow putters, T22 Newport 2 and a GSS Tour Rat as a backup
Mince was the only one who got his putter 0,0% square at impact! 🧐 isn’t that what it is all about with good putting 😜 Great test guys. What about the different shafts in putters and the necks? What do they do? I personally love putters with the shaft centred. Too me this makes much more sense as that is where you strike the ball so less rotation when striking it. Mmmm... 🧐 why do my golf clubs have their shafts not centred in the club head 🤨 All very confusing 😩😩😩
Really interesting video. Fell in love with a Newport 2.5, went for a fitting and ended up with a Ping Heppler Tyne 3 which suited me on slower greens (tendency to leave short). As the video says, the tech and marketing blurb isn’t a replacement for a proper fitting. All clubs in the bag are now fitted, just hope I can get back on the course soon! Great video, keep up the great work and great to see Lester back.

Great video, my personal opinion is the putter performance is 90% based on how the putter suits your eye. As an example, my 2 gamers are an Odyssey 9 (max toe flow) and a Scotty Phantom X 6str (face balanced) and I am equally comfortable with both.
I guess what this shows, as you mentioned, go get fit and try the putter.
Putters are such an individual feeling when looking for something that will fill you with joy or having a need to choke the living crap out of it. It's like having a best friend that occasionally pisses you off. :)
Good work on this topic fellows! It is a reminder that fitting with a knowledgeable fitter with the right equipment makes a difference in golf club performance on the course. As an aside, I find I can put with any of the three putter styles you used in your test (and own all three styles but in PING) and gain similar outcomes on test equipment. Nonetheless, I tend to putt better on the course overall using the strokes gained approach using the PING Vault (1.0) Anser black dot with the PP62 grip. Note that I was fitted for this specific putter by a PING fitting expert.
This video was more than just some food for thought; it was a feast! If only the putter itself was my problem, lol.
I would love to see you do more videoes on putting and putter fittings with James. My local pro and proshop don't offer putter fitting and don't have a SAM, otherwise I would surely take more lessons to improvce my putting.

Good putting stroke overrides any equipment help at a high level. That's about all I get from this.

I just like mallet style putters tried blades, couldn't get on with them, not sure if I'll get a putter fitting I like to experiment with putters a lot.

The information provided by a SAM PutLab fitting is important in confirming which putter style enables one to most consistently strike the ball. I found it was an eye-opening experience.

Interesting vid, I’m not sure what to conclude from the results! Is it worth having a putter fitting or just go by what appeals visually and trust ones instincts. A follow up vid on what you would recommend for the three of you would be worth while also as another viewer suggested taking grip size into the equation as well?

I think a player may have a natural tendency to a type of putter & find it via trying several types. I am not entirely convinced by putter fittings but golfers love data. I have gone back to my first putter a Ping anser, cleaned & re-gripped. Last few days have done a few experiments on the practice green & decided it is staying in the bag.
Dang it Dan!! Now I don't know what to believe. Ping even puts stickers on their shafts to indicate what stoke type the putter is best designed for. So does that mean I can use whichever "balanced" head I like best? 🤔

It's the only club I still use that I used to use 15 years ago. I found the one for me and se no need to change. Streanght of my game so far. Will probably do 4 puts on all holes next round after saying that 🤣 but putting is What I am most comfortable with. Very rarely do more then two putt. Its getting to the green that is the hard part🤣

Hi Dan could you recommend a nice headcover for Scotty phantom x 5.5 ? Just got one and love the putter but omg the headcover is huge and naff 🤮 want a more snug fitting like a spider x one
Nothing beats experimentation. Are they all the same weight?
If you test on a real green, with slopes/camber would the putter characteristics be more apparent? Just a theory but if you are on a slope to start then would gravity impact how the putter works due to the weighting of the putter.
I'd be interested in a follow-up test, but, instead of comparing different putter types, comparing a traditional size/shape grip vs. a larger, tapered grip vs. a larger, non-tapered grip. Thx, Dan!
I switch between a Newport 2 and an Odyssey V line and see no difference accept the Odyssey is a bit more forgiving. Myth busters of the world unite👍
Interesting.. Andy Gorman said on hie utube show, he will be doing some robot testing soon. With more info than your equipment..I think shaft deflection is a real issue...especially on real grass.. astro turf isn't quite the surface to show the defects..in the stroke or the putter. Maybe the robot will..

Great video - I think the high toe flow putters are more of a concern for people that tend to decelerate in short putts as the heavier toe will tend to close the face on the way back AND then close down even more if you decelerate on the way through
Different experts and companies seem to have conflicting ideas, its an area of the game that certainly needs more research.I like your idea though.
Except that the more Toe Flow the Slower the Rate of Rotation, which means the Toe stays Open to Path.
Not enough TF leads to Pulls.
Too much TF leads to Pushes.
I agree that a putter fitting is essential after seeing this.
Hi guys do these come out with all there talk because the use machines or are they just using the same old same because that’s what’s been said for so many years because I would think the do change in different peoples hands as we’re all different
Literally had a long conversation recently with someone telling me how my putter (Newport 1.5) shouldn't work with my straight back straight through feeling. Also, this video might explain my slight waggle in the back swing where, like you say, the toe seems to be delayed on the takeaway. I thought this was a quirk in me but it sounds like it might not be after all. I'll have to do some testing and fitting.
The moral of the story is to use what works best for you, ignore what the experts tell you what should or should not be happening

We agree, and to have a conclusive data size we would like to test 1000’s of people. I will look into that as not sure what sort of research was put in by Scotty Cameron to reach these conclusions.
Some of us out there like center shafted putters and pretty much never see reviews for them from any of you youtubers
I’ve never understood the face balance and toe hang thing. If you’re holding the grip then the forces of any weighting on the head of the putter wouldn’t have any impact?
So call me old fashioned but I’d buy the one which holes most putts for you.
Question, probably for James - I putt quite open to closed but the putter I use has a strong ‘toe hang’, so could my putting action be down the putter?
It’s difficult to say without seeing your action, but I would say most likely not. It’s more likely to be your posture over the ball or way you hold the club. Very difficult to say for sure without seeing it in the flesh 😬

Based on physics the highest toe hang putter should open the slowest on the way back and close the slowest on the way through. With this in mind I believe the following to be true. Toe hang putters are suggest for an arcing stroke is so that the face rotation does not overtake the arc and shut down. We should generally see the least amount of backswing rotation with a toe hang putter and the most with a face balanced, assuming an arcing stroke. We would also see the most forward swing rotation with a face balanced putter as the toe is not weighted and hanging back. In summary, get fit and see what the data shows as everyone will have different grip pressure and arcs which can throw theory out the window.
Depends which coach, company or expert you follow. It's an area which requires more development and research definetly.
Personally, I just go on looks and feel. I don't believe in the spill they (the manufacturers) come out with. I've had 2 bladed putters (Ping & Scotty) and now using the SC Fastback. If I try it and like it, then that's good enough for me. If I liked a different style putter and fancied a change, it isn't going to influence how many putts I sink or miss
I know the differences are tiny, but that tiny difference has a larger end result the longer the putt is? Also, wouldn't we expect different results for each golfer as ball position and path are different for everybody?

Only know one thing about putters. Beware of old guys with old putters. They usually have them because they know how to use them.
Not having a putter fitting is a huge mistake when spending 100-350 on a putter..... No one can judge if a putter suits them just by having a few putts on a matt or a green.

SAM will put you in several different putters that you like the feel and look of, and then give you the data on which one is performing best in all ‘tendency’, ‘timing’, and most importantly ‘consistency’. A putter fitting is the ONLY way to find out which putter is performing best for YOU without speculation or theory.
