  • Sifu Jason Korol reacts to the recently discovered hand written letters from Bruce Lee to Bob Baker. Unfortunately it seems that not only did Bruce Lee have a bad cocaine problem, but that he was selling it as well. We should all take this as a lesson and endeavor to live a life of self control fit for a martial artist.

One thing that never gets talked about in discussing the legacy of Bruce Lee is that he was the son of an addicted father. It's documented in Matthew Polly's book that Bruce's father, Lee Hoi Chuen, had an opium habit that affected how he was with his family and that he finally had to kick cold turkey. Addiction cycles can run in families, and I think that Bruce was certainly caught up in one.

I hold Bruce as a HUGE inspiration and, like many others, is somewhat responsible for my life in martial arts, including JKD. That being said you can’t help but understand that the 60’s and 70’s were what they were and Bruce WAS involved in “Hollywood”. It was common in that time to live and indulge that lifestyle. What he did in his personal life can make one see him as a different person, but as Sifu Jason said, it DOES NOT take away from what he did in his life, his contributions and the impact he had even after his death. He was a legit hero and even even heroes have flaws. End of rant, RIP Bruce and Brandon

Respected Sir/Sifu. Thank you so much for your advice on ethics to your students and for warning about the danger of drug addiction. I respectfully share your opinion, Sir. Drug addiction is a very serious mental health problem and it would damage the neurophysiology of the brain in the long term. I have worked with young women and men with drug addiction as a physician.
I must admit that I have been a great admirer of Mr Bruce Lee's martial art since my childhood. I have read a few books written by John little and have seen his films many times. Mr Lee was an inspiration for me at my school in a remote village in India in the 80s and read his books in the 90s. I am not a martial artist. I got interested in the study of philosophy (Zen, Taoism, J. Krishnamurti, Carl Rogers, Baruch Spinoza etc) and read books such as Jonathan Livingston Seagull and other motivational books, only after having read Mr Bruce lee's Tao of Jeet Kundo. That helped me a great deal in order to motivate myself at school/university and later I was able to enter even medical school that I couldn't have even dreamed of. I have smoked only 1/2 cigarette in my whole life and never drank alcohol. I am a humanist and environmentalist. I still do have enormous respect for him as a human being for having managed to succeed in his life in spite of lof difficulties he was supposed to have faced in the US. I find it very difficult to believe and see him as a person who had had a drug addiction. His books and films have motivated many thousands in the world to practise martial arts. My childhood ideal image of Mr Lee has unfortunately got stains and the image is sadly fading away.

For sure Sifu Jason, you have great heavenly insight when you share that one must do his/her holistically spiritually best according who we are, especially as a Martial Artist Teacher.
That is a tough one: NO human beings are perfect as we are born to balance ourselves with lessons we have to learn. BUT: perfection does not exist, to do your best, is the only perfection: the pressures on Bruce must have been enormous but, he did choose so and fame can bring hard unbalance. That will test your steel.
As Bruce was speaking/teaching about self control and philosophy, he should have spoken about, if true, his drugs experiences tough, and then warn against it. Hence, I adore some of what it did teach but as a legacy, if you do not redeem yourself on time, that is a bummer as your legacy is not as cool as it could have so been.
Bruce had a hard time unfortunately as he, himself, said in an interview: "...I do have a bad temper. (laughs). A violent temper, in fact. (laughs). So, that is definitely, I mean, some people that I am portraying, not Bruce Lee as he is..."
Damn, that must have been kinda Hellish to control and Hollywood can be a harsh place for the soul...
Now, I "learned" a few wise tips for self defense and trying your best from Bruce tough, which are priceless, as one is not the other:
One of the best is : express yourself truly!
Plus, I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.
Absorb what is useful, Discard what is not, Add what is uniquely your own.
The less effort, the faster and more powerful you will be.
Plus: Some people can brag from MMA, BJJ, or other fighting combat sports, but Bruce was not only quick which equals powerful hits BUT smart on WHERE to hit (vital/weak points) RESPECT>>>
Bruce RIP: RESPECT! His simple (then) JKD was genius...no more, but certainly no less tough. Also RIP Brandon...

"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone".
You can respect the art without needing to respect every single aspect of the artist. Few people are/were faultless saints, even saints...
Remember that Bruce Lee was only 32 when he died. Famous people dying young can become legendary, partly because they don't get to go through their elderly, unfashionable, tragic or scandalous, years. He had become a Hollywood star and probably behaved similarly to many of his peers, even if he was much fitter, faster and better coordinated than many.

Just my two cents as a long time Bruce Lee fan since the mid 1960's. 1st as you mentioned the Lee estate DID NOT release the letters as you casually mentioned. From what I understand, It was one of Robert Bakers two Kids ( adults) who auctioned off the letters. At one time is was said it was found at some kind of flea mkt, but that is highly unlikely. It was common knowledge as far back as the early 1980's, that Robert Baker was Bruce Lee's close friend as well as his drug dealer. No big surprise there. However the extent of what type of drugs was being sold to Bruce such as cocaine did come as a HUGE surprise to everyone. I am not saying or making excuses for Bruce Lee's behavior, but calling him a heavy drugged out user by many people here is a big stretch. I am sure he was a recreational drug user at best. That was part of the culture back then especially in the 1970's, and if you grew up in that time period, you know what I am talking about. He partied hard, worked hard and did not rest much at all. All these acts mentioned is what probably led to his early death. Didn't help that he was screwing around behind Linda's back with that whore Betty Ting Pei either. The man made a lot of bad choices, but he was human and despite what he did in his private life, I will always be grateful for the thrills he gave me on the big screen as well as his books and training methods. He was and still is one of the biggest influences in my life. Peace you all..

Dunno - one of the rumours I heard from someone who was part of a well documented HK WC lineage was that Lee was using heroin in Hong Kong. Knowing that he inspired as much jealousy as anyone I know of - before or since - I just filed it under 'Whatever'. There was a definite sense within the WC community even back in the 80s that a man who had minimal training under Yip Man had built completely unrealistic expectations in many who walked through the kwoon doors, as I'm sure you know only too well. I doubt that anyone wanders into a Muay Thai gym with the expectation that they can train for six months and start fighting world champions but movie magic is different - we were ALL Lee demolishing bad guys in Enter The Dragon and Fist of Fury, weren't we ? The goal of a Chinese man in the 70's was to have as many kids as possible. Boys preferably. Concubines was common. Drugs were so common in the 70's it was almost as normal as drinking alcohol. So you have to use that as a base for Lee's morality. The 60's just passed and in the US most young teens saw drugs as expanding your mind. This perspective on drugs was still around. Cocaine was seen as glamorous. Marijuana was thought to be physically addictive. Disco music was popular. Soul Train was airing on TV. Keep in mind how different the world was back then because we now see things very differently.

From PPT LifeStyle- Royal Oak, MI: Sifu Jason, I understand the value of what you're saying. What I didn't hear you say anything about was why Baker released these letters, and what it says about him? I have not followed anything about the letters, so it's assumption on my part he released them. But when you say it doesn't affect what he accomplished, it will for many, and Bruce is not the only one tainted by his human faults. Did we forget, "Judge not, lest ye be judged". He is not alive to speak to whatever "demons" drove the behaviour. Your video on Inosanto being wrong, while it gave an informative view, will also taint his reputation, whether that was your intent or not, and I think not. There are consequences for every action we take, so I am sure you're prepared for what comes your way from this. Keep being you, it helps us all. My only question, as Bruce was raised in a culture where opium is common(some say), how do we know it was "Hollywood" that may have influenced the usage? Second, what does it say about him to perform at such a level with drugs in his system? I simply am saying there is more to the story....

    Great video, sir!
I'm not surprised at all by that, if I'm honest.
I grew-up watching Bruce Lee (thanks to my dad) - I was five when I started watching his films and I've always been a huge fan of Bruce.
I read many books over the years, his life and death always fascinated me! For many years, in my late teenagehood, I would have sworn that someone had bopped him but over the years, after reading many articles and speaking to different people including Tom Bleeker who wrote the book ''Unsettled Matters'', my judgment and viewpoint drastically changed for so many different reasons.
The main one being his relationship with Betty Tin Pei; I'm not being disrespectful here, but this lady was off the wall. She attended rehabs many times, married to the son of a famous mafia leader in China around the 80's, she came from a wealthy family, she was just that type of girl who was heavily into drugs and parties being around powerful people. So if you think about it... Why the hell would anyone who isn't into drugs have anything to do with her? I'm not saying we shouldn't hangout with people who do drugs, but to actually spend most of your time alone with that person and be in a relationship with kind of gives it. I highly doubt they were having tea with biscuits.
Secondly, I always found it bizarre how Linda never really speculated about her husband's death - When he passed away, she said she would not tolerate any rumours regarding her husband's death. Which is fair enough, but to me, it seemed like she was hoping that the case wouldn't be open for too long and was entirely satisfied with the autopsy report.
This is a pure indicator that there was something shady about his death and that she didn't want to go into much detail; She just accepted it and moved on which in my opinion is rather strange.
Thirdly, Bruce Lee's appearance in Enter The Dragon is quite shocking - You can actually see that the poor man was sick and I don't think it wasn't just him being tired, there was something else and that something else was most likely drugs.
In the books I read and the interviews I watched, some of Bruce's close friends mentioned that in the last 8-9 months of his life, he became extremely violent and had manic episodes where he would just go bat shit. This is again, the kind of behaviour you'd expect from someone who's on some heavy stuff.
Finally, I read that Bruce Lee had been prescribed Cortisone for his back pain around 1969 - 1970 and he took cortisone for 3 or 4 years straight.
Add steroids on top of everything else and well... yeah! That would do it.
Nonetheless, as mentioned in the video, we all have our problems - Even the martial arts legend.
I'm not saddened by this news and this won't change my opinion about Bruce Lee. He achieved many things and worked hard to get to where he got.
He was a great athlete and was way ahead of his time! I have a lot of respect for him despite the ''holy stuff'' as he would call it.

It doesn't add up, the video evidence from the period should show a dramatic change in him if he was using all that amount of cocaine, as it would if you started using a large amount of it, but we don't see that in the video archives from the period. SO... if the letters are real (and they might not be) where were all those drugs going? We know that Bruce has financial problems in the late 60's and early 70's, so where did he get the money for his first films? Is it possible that all that cocaine wasn't for HIM but to be SOLD to finance his first films? Was Bruce Lee part of a drug dealing network designed to obtain the money to finance his first films?

I think it would be understandable if he really was a drug addict.. Drug usage aroung famous and successful people is so common. It happened mostly to young people, who became famous in short time, they just want to enjoy life, and for people who aren´t used to being successful, able to suddenly afford anything, it is very hard to actually resist all the pleasures. Unfortunatelly many actors and stars didn´t learn this before they passed away. And I can imagine, Bruce Lee experienced suddenly so many great things - money, fame, women, etc. And he was very ambitious. Even less successful people try drugs just because they suddenly can afford them, so for Bruce as the most iconic kung fu star and probably the luckiest Chinese actor who gained so much fame in a sort time, it had to be very much pressure. That is why people who are used to being poor and suddenly become rich can´t really manage money and spend it on everything just because they can. And if Bruce really take drugs, it would explain why he was so full of energy, being able to sleep few hours a day or stay so fit despite he was in my opinion so underfed. I don´t know for sure, if the letters to Bob are true or fake, but it would explain why Mr. Lee died so suddenly. By using drugs he basicaly exalted his body´s limits and the body responded to it as it always does sooner or later, when people go over their limits.
I once read somewhere that people tried to fed a rabbit with a stimulation drug in order to make it jump higher. The rabbit was indeed able to jump over 2 meters high, but shortly after it broke his leg, hurt it´s muscles and died young.
Still, Bruce Lee´s positive legacy is indeniable.

It can be adultery, being a bad father, bad husband, mean to people. All these imperfections and what people don't understand right away is its not only always drugs. BRUCE was a HUMAN BEING .....In many ways a UNIQUE one in physical skill, in insights , in thought & action....But he WAS a HUMAN BEING . Not a God or Deity, not a Monolith Statue , not a saint , but a HUMAN ....Who made MISTAKES, had failings , inconsistencies like we ALL do....The drugs stuff ?...Well, I dont think from these letters we can tell exactly how far he was into it. Some people might say it was a habit, but in the correspondence he claimed he was taking it to research a role with regard to a character's mindset. If he was taking THAT MUCH Coke, I don't believe he would have been able to function in front of a camera in the scenes or as fight/stunt co-ordinator from behind the camera.....He was fallible. He wrote in his earlier writings about the problem of ego & how a Gung Fu man's self worth & esteem must not be dependent on the opinion of others. But later on, clearly he became seduced by the Hollywood system or that in Hong Kong which draws people into a fashionable clique indulging in recreational drug culture...He should have pulled himself free of that....As for the affairs, well,,,McQueen used to say of his rise to fame -'The chicks would be coming out of the woodwork' Attractive Women would throw themselves at people & it would be very, very hard for a red blooded male to resist some of it. But its just horrible to think of him betraying someone like Linda. Because Linda was so loyal & supportive to him....If we try to make excuses for Bruce in a way we would be failing to live up to the moral code which martial art as LIFE philosophy tries to promote. Which would be both a moral & ethical mistake.

A valuable lesson I’ve learned throughout my life as a follower of Christ that not many want to talk about is how there are very talented and influential people that have walked this earth yet had “another side” to them that most never knew. But I have learned to accept this because many people (myself included) have been raised through many difficulties and in very different environments causing all sorts of insecurities, mental issues, fears and weakness. I’ve never “met” Bruce Lee but his amazing physical achievements, his charisma and charm have left an enduring impression in my life, regardless of whether he used or abused cocaine or whether he was unfaithful to his bride. No, I do not condone such things but in all honesty they won’t change a thing on how I feel about Bruce Lee. Imagine being bullied and having no idea on how to defend myself then here comes a Bruce Lee movie which instantly inspires me to learn self defense, I join a Martial Arts school, earn my Black Belt, become a champion fighter and later find out that Bruce Lee had a drug problem.......am I supposed to then discredit Bruce Lee because of his infidelity? I really don’t understand the point of this video, specially that the man has been gone for almost 50 years and is not here to answer the issue (if he even chose to). Bruce was a very unique individual who left an amazing Martial Arts legacy and he should be remembered for such and not to be tarnished by private letters of his private demons. Think of it, if it weren’t for these letters you probably wouldn’t have even made a video about Bruce Lee.

@@Fountainbleau Your comment is kind of funny! You say you didn't mention ADULTERY .... however, you commented on Jason's video and what he was saying about what Matthew Polly's book revealed about Bruce's sexual adventures. None of the sexual relationships that were being referred to, were Pre-Marriage. All of the sexual relationships Jason was speaking of, were DURING Bruce's marriage to Linda. So wether you are smart enough to realise it or not .... you were commenting on, and justifying Adultery! You also said "Ethics are subjective NOT objective" So if there is NO Objective standard .... only Subjective ethical justification of ones actions .... what keeps me from Killing you and your entire family to take your belongings? I could certainly Subjectively Justify doing so, if I NEEDED the tings you have, and didn't have an ethical standard outside of my own subjective wants and needs!

Eat the fish spit out the bones, I hope you hide your skeletons well!, for to kick a man while in his grave is horrible, but yet you glorify singers, musicians, athletes, and so on who had the the same problems! Seems like a platform to discredit another mans greatness!
