I lost my father , at age 75, post CABG 10 days ago.He was otherwise fit,no HTN, no DM, no co morbidities.TVD was diagnosed in Nov.Got operated on 21st Feb.Developed Atrial Fib on 25th, then on 26th.They did cardioversion and he never recovered from anesthesia. Was in coma for 2 weeks and gone. The memories of that hospital will haunt me till I go to my own grave.

I am about to have a triple bypass and am very nervous about this. Thank you for all of this information and I would like to also thank patient Richard for his encouraging words. He really gave good advice and gave me a more positive way to think about my upcoming surgery

I had heart surgery 3-1/2 years ago to repair a leaky mitral valve.
I had tachcardia and the tests I had showed the leaking valve had worsened over the years, they had me on medications, one blood thinner was $600 for 30 days worth, and then metropol and some others... but I told the cardiologist at a later appointment that I didnt want to be on pills and wanted to put a perm surgical FIX on the table for discussion.
So soon after, I had the surgery done, it was pretty easy and I actiually didnt need pain med, nor did I take any of the oxycontin they sent me home with.
After the surgery was over and I woke up the nurse said I had to go back in the morning for a pacemaker, the Cox Maze procedure they also did to fix a tachycardia issue didn't work, so they put in a pacemaker.
I was very sore if turned over on my side to change sheets, but it wasnt terrible.
I had a chest tube and 2 wires they removed after a few days, the nurse said it wont hurt but feels wierd, like a zipper being unzipped! it did NOT hurt at all but it DID feel wierd as there are nerve endings inside but they are never really used so you dont know they are there, pulling out the tube and 2 braided wires you feel a strange sensation where you never had any touch feeling before!
It was amazing how much you physically get weak after such surgery and laying around in the hospital a few days, it was like dragging 2 concrete blocks behind me to walk to my mailbox 100 feet away, but over a few short weeks energy, strength and stamina all comes back pretty fast.
I was off work recovering 6 weeks, wanted to return sooner- like 4 weeks, but had to get an appt and clearance.
The surgical scar has almost vanished

@@sweetnsassyjjfoote my surgery went fabulous. I am post surgery Two and a half weeks and just got released to go back to work and drive this past Monday. I tried to prepare myself mentally effective being put under but when I woke up it was weird. I remember seeing a flash exactly like when in star wars when they take the ship into hyper speed it was crazy. Then natural reaction was trying to pull the tube out of my throat. Once I realized where I was and heard my wife's voice I remembered what was happening amd calmed down. Believe it or not the worst pain I had and was almost unbearable was the pain in my neck amd shoulders from laying on the operating table for 6 hours. My goodness it felt as if I were in a horrific car accident. Even now I still have soreness in my shoulders and neck but I refuse to take opioid narcotics and I am powering through it with Tylenol. A good heating pad is a must when you get home. So I went in expecting a tripple bypass turns out out they did a quintupple bypass. I am just happy the lord has given me a second chance at life. I will not squander it. Let me know if you have anymore questions. The biggest thing of this is the fear going In, it is only natural but these surgeries are so common now there really isn't a need to worry. Remember what ever you do FIGHT the urge just to sleep and lay in bed all day. I have walked a mile everyday since my first day out of the hospital and I think because of that and my relatively younger age (45) I am healing quickly.

@@MrCharleyTuna93 I am so glad you replied to me. I am supposed to go talk to the heart surgeon tomorrow and I'm terrified! How long did they leave the breathing tube in after you woke up? I am having a problem with that also ☹️ It scares me that a machine will be breathing for me and also they tie your hands down. That doesn't sit well with me. I'm scared about how much pain will I be in when I wake up and how long will that tube still be in me?? I'm so scared about everything, period!

@@MrCharleyTuna93 I am Soo glad you came out of surgery doing well! I was thinking about it yesterday so much that my blood pressure was high and causing me a bloody nose. I'm trying to relax about it, it's just so hard 😭

I was told the breathing tube is removed before they wake you up???

    • @SuperLittleTyke

Yep, certainly in my case it was. But I still had the two drain tubes into the chest, as well as two electrical wires they leave in for a few hours after you wake up, just to be sure they don't need to fix some arrhythmia urgently. Neither the tubes nor the wires caused any significant pain as they were being removed. The nurse said "Deep breath!" and out they came. However, I still had the massively long needle in the neck. This goes straight down into the heart, again for any emergency procedures that may become necessary. That didn't hurt either when the nurse pulled it out of my neck. I was more amazed at the length of it. Man, that was a *long* needle!

@@SuperLittleTyke u fortunately, I was woke up fully because they could not get me to breathe on my own at all. They tried to keep me in the twilight stage with hopes I'd start breathing on my own but after many attempts, I didn't. That was scary! And when they took my chest tubes out, it hurt like hell!! I also still had the arterial line in my neck after the tube removal for several more days. It was an experience to go through, that's for sure. The 1st 3 days was tough for breathing because of pain but I handled it well. I had short, shallow breaths. 4th day was better 🎉 Anyways, had my OHS October 27th and I will tell you what, I'm so glad it's over with. Had a good 2 weeks before to stew and stress over it before it happened 🤦🏻‍♀️
