  • In this video, we discuss all things heart stents. What are these stents that are used to treat blockages of the heart arteries and how technology is working to improve outcomes for patients long-term. Stents are typically metallic devices that act as springs or scaffolds to prop open a diseased artery thereby restoring blood flow. Learn all about how they work and how best to look after them once inserted. Subscribe to the channel to be updated on new content as it comes out!

In January 2016, I had a heart attack. My doctor at the Swedish Hospital in Seattle put in 4 stents inside my Left Anterior Descending (LAD). I was on blood thinner medicine for a year along with aspirin and Atoravastatin of 40 mg for a year. Now my dose is 10 mg of Rosuvastatin and aspirin. The lower dose is because I suspected the higher dose of 20 or 40 mg of Atoravastatin has caused chest pain on and off in me. I feel better now with just 10 mg of Rosuvastatin. I have been doing intermittent fasting for 2 years and my weight has come down from 144lbs to 125lbs. My A1C has come down from 5.8 to 5.5. I am going to be 70 years old at the end of November 2022.

Yeah, I had one several years ago now (aged 43) and similar as I was sporty and all markers would say I was very fit. I ended up with 5 stents. I am fine now - back to running 5k’s and weights etc. At first I also thought I had no symptoms, but when I looked back - one thing I did have was intense tiredness on occasion- where I would have to go and lay down and have a power nap. I was working hard, young family (so up at night a lot)- so didn’t think much of it at the time- but now think it was the only real symptom. Glad we are both here to tell the tale though!- have a healthy new year.

I learned about Stents the hard way. In July 2019 I dropped dead from full cardiac arrest due to what doctors call the "Widow Maker" at 51 years young. Luck was on my side, I made a full recovery thanks to many people, and of course the man up stairs. Now I take very little cholesterol medication and Aspirin daily and a healthy diet. I probably think of the incident almost every day. Survival is minimal and I made a full recovery. If you find yourself in a situation, please listen to your doctors. I didn't at first but believe me, I sure do now. I was always thin and in shape. I never saw it coming.

Great, one month ago , fortunately my doctor sent me to emergency department , like yourself i never in my wildest dreams thought the LAD artery would have blockage, my bmi was borderline 25 or lower, regular gentle exercise, never smoked, only had slightly higher blood pressure, i no longer think I'm invincible because of being fit, healthy, really interested in dr Esselstyn cardiologist research on greens with balsamic vinegar to help heal the endothelial lining of the arteries. He's against all Oils, which is a surprise to me. The only negative I've developed tinnitus in the ears that's really annoying. Hope your recovery continues.

    • @anthonyvasquez6666
      @anthonyvasquez6666 Год назад

@Y a s m i n e 💕 the best thing to do is to listen to the doctors. I didn't at first when I had my warning about ten years ago and was made aware of my cholesterol levels. It probably took a couple years to feel completely recovered. A change of diet is the main thing and medicine. As time passed I didn't have to take so much medication like at first. After coming out of the coma and learning what happened and what doctors in the e ER had to do, making the changes was absolutely not a problem for me. The survival rate for cardiac arrest is about 7 % , not very much obviously. It just wasn't my time or your husband's time.
As long as we follow doctors advice, we should be ok from now on.
After three years I've completely changed how I go about life. I eat right, no smoking and no drinking alcohol. After my incident I would run out of breath after a couple minutes of talking to someone. Little by little everything gets better and feels better.
The main thing is to follow the doctors advice. That's a must.
I just got lucky when it happened, someone there knew CPR and kept me going until first responders arrived with the AED.

Now I’m being tested for LBBB on Friday, my Dr went over a few, ‘we might run into’s’ just in case a stent was one of them along with an overnight stay in the hospital. I’ve been a cyclist all my life. At about 48, according to my cardiologist, I pushed my heart rate too high and forced a piece of plaque to break loose and block a valve. The doctor went in and removed the blockage and placed a stent. I had a 2nd cardiac cath done shortly after that showed normal amount of plaque for someone my age. Shortly after I began training again (after getting off all the horrible heart meds and statins) and began cycling and racing again with no adverse affects whatsoever. I do have slightly high cholesterol but I refuse to take that statin poison. I exercise, keep active, watch my weight and eat healthy. Now 62 and feel great.

Somehow a petition must be made to inform the patient of the heavy load of medications required for a long time after stenting. The doctors avoid giving the information before the procedure and then load it on the patient after the stenting when it is too late. My otherwise healthy brother who I feel was actually suffering from hiatal hernia acid reflux that induces heart pain or discomfort was lured by the doctor via angiogram reading claim of arterial blockage. A leading Indian heart specialist has come out with the information that our bodies create by passes on their own and neither bypass nor stenting is required for blocked arteries. He says heart attacks are due to distress in the mind, anger and other negative emotions the person cannot handle and no case really exist of death from a blocked artery. Within a month, my otherwise healthy brother with tons of energy has been turned into a frail thin wasted creature via 8 deadly medications, which include blood thinners, immunity depressors, statins and what not and he cannot even remove that stupid unneeded stent. Where are these evil money worshipping killer allopaths think they will be going in their next lifetime. Obviously they will end up as slaves in some CRUEL civilisation in some weird planet out there in our Universe. There is little we the public can do for the present as ads for their paraphernalia are food for the media who also are not on the side of the public but lean over willy nilly to big business and Pharmacies.

I was supported by the brilliant team at Southampton General Hospital UK when I suffered a severe Angina attack. The attack returned and I had another stent insertion at the hospital. This was all over 20 years ago, and the surgeon (whom I will not name for privacy reasons), advised "Get on an exercise Program". I have been exercising ever since, every day, mainly cardiovascular, and nothing more strenuous. I have to add I am now 84 not for reasons of vanity, but for accuracy.

She has had conic pancreatitis attacks for years and doesn’t tolerate drugs well. Statins for example actually promote the pancreatitis and we are concerned the post operative medication might have the same issue. The arm through which the stent was introduced is heavily bruised and dreadfully painful : fingers crossed.

I'm 71 yrs old and on BP and Statins as well as aspirin, and Clopidegrel blood thinners. The only thing now is I don't have as much energy as I did 4 yrs ago , maybe it's old age. I will talk more with my cardiologist at my next appointment in May. You have explained things better than any of the doctors I've been seeing for the last 15 years! Thank you sir!

Thank you for that. 2001 I had a triple bypass when i was 41 after a major heart attack, 2 more heart attacks and 12 stents later which seem to last a couple of years before more attention is required. More are now overdue which i am putting off because of covid and overstretched NHS. Maybe i won't live to regret it. What you described is exactly the way the hospital and my cardiologist described to me yesterday when I had mine installed in the "widow maker" I had 0 symptoms, no angina, no nausea, no shortness if breath. However, when I went for my CT scan several months ago, I was told I had medium blockage in the "widow maker" and it was suggested that I haveoine installed. Hopefully my doctor and me made the correct decision, because I am not taking any chances in the "widow maker"!

Thank you for this great clarification ! I had my first heart issues around 2010 with quadruple bypass and aortic valve replacement (metal). Then, in 2020, after contracting lymphoma requiring chemotherapy, I needed four stents due to narrowing. Unfortunately, for some reason, in early 2021 it was decided that I needed additional stents but, again, by the end of 2021 complications required a redo. So, in total I’ve had 12 stents in three years. I’m now 70 and still very active. My “hobby” is construction and I’d say my activity level is high. I can tell anyone facing the need for stents, DO NOT hesitate. After every procedure I can truthfully state that I felt better immediately after the procedure. It’s just like having a blocked drain cleaned out.

My brother, two years older than I, suffered several attacks of angina recently. He finally went to the ER. They did some tests and discovered severe blockages in his heart arteries, especially one known as the “widow maker”. The doctors put in five stents and started him on blood-thinning meds including aspirin. This was a couple of weeks ago. He had walked almost every day, lifted weights and so forth but by his own admission had not paid attention to his diet for decades (he is 71, never smoked and was a moderate drinker). Both my parents had taken Coumadin and my mother had a heart valve replaced although she lived to be 94. My brother’s experience served as a wake up call for me. There’s a test called a coronary calcium scan which tells how much plaque is deposited on the walls of the arteries. It’s not perfect in that it can’t distinguish plaque caused by hereditary factors and plaque caused by not living right but it far better than nothing. It’s also inexpensive. I’ve requested one from my state VA Hospital but have not heard from them yet. This is normal for them so I’ll have to push for one. Good luck to you all!

This is by far the best explanation I have heard about stents, and the advancement being researched is awesome! My husband had a heart attack 9+ years ago, had 4 stents, and 6 By passes. He is doing great. Last week his brother had a mild heart attack, and the doctor assigned to him at the hospital said no stents & he would have By Pass surgery. I had questions to ask about Stents vs. Open Heart, and why he could not have stents. He got agitated, and did not give me any answer accept .. "It's his anatomy". He would not explain what that meant and got very agitated at me, and threw up his arms and said we aren't getting anywhere, I have explained this numerous ways, (which he did not) and we aren't getting anywhere and left the room. Needless to say, I was not feeling that this was a very caring doctor & am very concerned about him operating on my brother-in-law today. I know doctors are busy, but I wish this one was more like you. Excellent information on stents.

A year after the first one, stress test caused exploratory procedure. The original bare metal stent was 97% blocked with scar tissue. The other two were perfectly clear. My first stents were the newer coated stents in 2001 and then stay on an anticoagulant like plavix for 6 months. 3-1/2 years later I had another heart attack. They inserted another stent as one of the originals clogged. By then they said the drug eluding stents were not even available anymore as they had their own issues. So the stent put in after the second heart attack was not drug eluding. I think they were made by Johnson and Johnson (the drug eluding ones). The new protocol was also to stay on the plavix forever. Now its 2023 and no issues. This is my personal experience and hope it helps. Also I was only 51 and always in great shape. I have the curse of genetics.

I got 3 stents about 3 months ago. Arteries were blocked but the heart was good and strong. Luckily I had been living healthy for quite awhile, so the blockages were caused by poor lifestyle choices in my youth. I was in and out of the hospital in less than a day. I refused all the medications and instead made more lifestyle changes. Artery disease can be reversed, but doctors won't tell you that. They profit from the meds. I'm a 70 year old man and feel mentally and physically like I'm 20 again. I went vegetarian and get lots of low stress exercise like walking, bicycling, swimming, gardening and housework. When the oldest person in the country was asked how she managed to live so long she replied: "I mind my own business and don't eat junk food." It's as simple as that.
Interesting note: The hospital bill was $140,000, the Medicare Advantage insurance I have paid a negotiated rate of $14,000, and it only cost me $300 for the emergency room deductible!

I’m not sure if it is just a reaction due to the ‘thinner’ blood or if this is just a side effect due to this specific drug.

In 2017 I had a very minor heart attack and had 2 stents placed. I went on a vegan diet and exercise a lot. On my annual cardiac visit five years later, my doctor noticed a possible blockage on my EKG, but I did not have any symptoms. Needless to say, that visit led to three more stents being placed, and the avoidance of any heart attacks or other issues. Thus a visit to your doctor is very important for heart patients, even when we feel great.

In this video I got the impression that biodegradable stents should be a brand new invention. Back in 2014, at a University Hospital in Finland, I got a balloon dilatation and the cardiologist inserted a 3 mm biodegradable stent in my heart, saying it would dissolve in a couple of years. Well, eight years later I suppose my stent is history since many years ago, and I haven't suffered from any kind of angina pectoris since the surgery, so everything should be fine.
