His ex girlfriend was attacking him by hitting him in the jaw. He had blacked out and he had his hands around her neck. But when he was realizing what he was doing, he had backed off of her. Vic's biggest issue (imho) was that he was having an identity crisis musically, and possibly personally. His sound was jumping from one thing to another. Never laying down a foothold in one particular style. From songs like "I Feel That to songs like "We Could Be Free", I think Vic didn't really know what type of artist he wanted to be. The fans wanted him to tap back into the sound of his INNANETAPE days, but he had moved on.

I'm actually a fan of Vic Mensa, I've always looked at him as a top MC from the 2010s, especially in Chicago. Along side Saba, Mick Jenkins, Chance, Joey Purp, etc etc.
I agree with the street take because, I'm from Markham which is south of Chicago. Hyde Park is a neighborhood that most people want to move to because of how safe and poppin' it is (I understand safe is subjective). I don't know Vic personally, but since the city is 3 degrees of separation, I could probably get close to him or hear stories about it. I've never heard nobody near me say, "he was one of them niggas." Like... Ever lol. So I can agree with you. But he could be thorough in everything he's talking about. Even squares are knowledgeable about street shit because of people or family members near them.
But I don't know why his music doesn't resonate because he's had songs that should've went up.
Plus him beefing with Chance didn't help, but they're back cool now.
    I guess we'll never know.

Well I think that you are wrong. His first album didn’t have Kanye West on it. The album that had Kanye West on it was Traffic. And that album was scrapped. I think that the reason why people couldn’t get into musically, was because not just that he wasn’t from the hood. But I think that he wasn’t marked right by Roc Nation. Because I had listened to a lot of his music before and he doesn’t talk about a lot of the street life like the way the other rappers from Chicago had. Plus, he wasn’t relatable to people because of how he grew up. His mother is White and his dad is Ghanaian. So he didn’t grow up the way a lot of Black people had grew up. So the Black people in the urban community didn’t know how to relate to him. And like I said before. It didn’t help that Roc Nation didn’t know how to make him relatable to the urban community

THE REASON VM DOESN'T CONNECT WITH THE PEOPLE TOTALLY ( He has a couple of songs I like). IS HE CAME OUT TRYING TO BE SO LEFT OF CENTER. HYDE PARK IS LIKE NEW YORK. SO THE RAP ROCK THING DIDN'T CLICK. P.S. KEEP THINKING VM IS SOFT OF SOMETHING. THAT'S HOW HYDE PARK IS. DONT JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER. PEACE AND LOVE.

there was a few facts that were off in this,
    1. kanye feature wasn't his 2nd song, he had at least 2 tapes out prior to that 1 song, most notably INNANETAPE , the project that really served as a springboard for his solo career (which you didn't mention)
    2. he's from the hyde park neighborhood in Chicago, not hyde park illinois, brutha. he is not from the suburbs of chicago. he is from the southside of chicago. kids these days; the "punk band" you refer to him being in is a product of the chicago public magnet school system.
so as far as him "trying to act like he's from chicago" argument kinda just falls flat in light of the actual facts.
i don't believe anyone who has actually listened to his music thinks he's trying make anything like chicago drill. he comes from a similar place, it still affects you no matter what. and he definitely touches on that.
you also didn't touch on the political raps either, which has a lot to do with chicago issues. the song 16 SHOTS???? off the tape called There's A Lot Going On
(which you also didn't mention) is about the murder of Laquan Mcdonald, a black man who was shot 16 times in the back by the chicago police.
to me vic is considered a legend in the city to people of my generation.
i just feel like you didn't truly listen to the music.
i can't deny that the more recent stuff has gone in more random directions, and that his career has definitely been mismanaged, i agree. but i feel like the reasons you give are very weak and frankly unfounded.
hope i didn't come off as aggressive, that is not the tone i'm taking as i type this, but am frustrated with the lack of proper research.
