  • The Great Filter theory states that for there to be no observable advanced life, some phase of the evolutionary process that is hard to surpass must exist. Whether it is ahead of or behind us we don't know. For XCOM that phase is April, the Great Filter is real, it wears a blue suit with yellow shades and drinks your rookie tears from a goddamn mug.

    Q: Where's the enemy files segment on Outsiders?
    A: When one of them actually puts up a fight.
    Q: Thin Me-
    A: Holy shit, Salt Induction: Maximum does not begin to explain why Thin Men are the stuff of nightmares. Six HP is a ton for April, the first thing that's guaranteed to oneshot them besides rockets are Plasma Rifles, good luck getting those before August. And unlike Floaters, they aren't suicidal enough to think that flying is a decent substitute for high cover and have more than enough aim to start killing troops even without going for the crazy flanks they're known for. Tanking a hit without armour is unlikely, and even with armour a crit, a second shot or poison damage can send you to the morgue in an instant. This is why you need tac rigging or lasers the moment April rolls in, you will not have the damage output to consistently kill them otherwise. Thin Men truly are the great filter of both the tactical and strategy layer in Impossible.
    Q - Battlescape: How do you not squadwipe in general?
    A: Mitigate as much risk as possible at all times. Have a grenade ready to finish an alien off if the kill isn't guaranteed. Hunker down in high cover for +80 Defense if your odds to hit are poor and you need another turn to rocket or something. Low cover is +20 and should only be used if the other option is staying in the open. Retreating out of line of sight is preferable to taking shots in low cover. Count your aliens and see how many are on each mission type with ufopaedia (the XCOM fandom wiki is trash, don't use it). And don't forget the law of large numbers. Given enough 30% shots, there is a 100% chance one of them will hit. Whether it'll hit you or the ayys is another question entirely.
    Q - Battlescape: Handling Terror missions?
    A: Terror missions are easier than regular missions as long as you're well equipped. Sure, you're on a timer due to the civvies but this isn't Long War, as long as one person survives you've passed.. The only aliens you'll encounter in April terrors are Floaters, Chryssalids and Zombies. Even in June and August you won't be running into anything that doesn't show up on a regular abduction, it's only at the tail-end of a campaign where you really need to be careful on these.
    Q - Geoscape: What to do in terms of construction?
    A: While most people swear by doing a satellite rush, building a second uplink in March and launching four satellites, I found it far too damaging to my tactical layer/battlescape to even try. Failing a mission because your soldiers weren't equipped is going to counteract any geoscape panic gains you could've made from launching a satellite most of the time. Building the uplink on April before the 15th (With three sats ordered before the 10th) is fine, as you should be able to start mitigating an outright loss with most of your launches. However, having more sats will snowball pretty hard into having more income in the later months, and maybe even continent bonuses. Losing a lot of countries early can seriously hamstring that. Foreshadowing.
    Q - Geoscape: Why Egypt/Argentina/Brazil over France?
    A: France gives mediocre money, the continent bonus was locked out last month, and both Africa and South America have very good continent bonuses for the early-game. All-In increases all monthly council funding by 30%, while We Have Ways makes interrogations instant. With the highest-paying countries of the continent, Russia and the UK, being lost there's not much incentve to go for Europe anymore except to prevent a game over.

    • @kierany9
      @kierany9  3 года назад +13

      You can, but in my experience getting Tac Rigging by the end of march is way better than getting lasers that early, mostly because rookies can't aim and grenades can't miss. On classic, lasers are a guaranteed oneshot on Thin Men and Floaters if it hits but Impossible it's a one in three chance, at that point you're likely going to need to shoot it twice, so why not use something that's guaranteed to hit.
      I do want to play LW1 at some point, though I don't know if I'm insane enough to make episodic content out of that behemoth of a mod.

    WARNING: THIS COMMENT IS EXTREMELY LONG (But I'm asking for tips on my problems since you seem to know the game so well and most of this is just telling you my problems and context so you don't give me incredibly obvious tips, and also so you can help me more since you will know the specifics, sorry for it being so long, Also I do not have any dlc period.)
    I feel like I've learned a lot from this, I've played this game since 2016. I used to be bad at strategy games, but in the past year or two I've gotten far better at them, but I still struggle with xcom. Everything you did in this video either had me scratching my head in confusion, because I would never do that, because I think it's too risky, or it had me thinking, "That's genius," and "how did I not think of that." do you have any tips for me? For context last year when I finally got good at strategy games I, (SPOILER DO NOT READ PAST THIS POINT) finally beat the alien base but an in-game month later I rage quit. I remember I had so much trouble with the mind control aliens (because until recently I mostly ignored technology, because a while ago I researched plasma weapons and used the pistols, thought it was the rifle and never tried it again until I saw a walkthrough showing its power, I of course use it now) but back to the point, I'm literally too afraid to go to the base now, because I know they'll become an enemy afterwards. But besides that I've fixed the vast majority of my problems, but I have a new one, due to all this I have trouble getting money, and I don't know what is safe to sell or in what quantities on the grey market. I have 6 satellites over a wide array of countries, but due to my strategies, while I rarely lose soldiers, or fighter craft, an in game month for me, is like an irl year. So it ends up not mattering because it takes so long for me to get the large funding, and even when I do get it, I spend it wisely, but I also spend a lot, so I'm almost bankrupt again in a couple in-game days. Also in the walkthrough I saw mind control defense, but I can't figure out how to get to it. Also due to my funding issues I don't get to use my foundry that much, I only have two upgrades from it. I have plenty of Scientists and engineers, so research is fast, but despite this items still cost a lot. I have 38 scientists, and 48 engineers. Also despite all my efforts most of the countries are always on high panic levels, I'm able to keep them from withdrawing, but it keeps me from getting good rewards from missions as I have to focus on whoever has the highest panic level.

    • @kierany9
      @kierany9  Год назад +2

      Most of the risks I take are one of these four things: I know they'll work, I have a backup plan, I'm willing to accept the consequences (remember that missing/getting hit a lot more likely than you think, law of averages, the 90% _will_ miss at some point so have a backup) or I have no other option. If they aren't one of those then it's a mistake. For random tips, the video descriptions have a lot of them, and UFOPaedia has a lot of good general game knowledge that'll help you calculate risks better.
      Sectoid Commanders only ever show up as the command pod of an UFO (a.k.a. the aliens in the cockpit that never leave it) unless you have the DLC, they aren't that scary as long as you can get into position and kill them so just clear the outside of the map before going into an UFO. Usually I have plasma by the time I go for ayybase so they die in 2 hits on normal, or 2-3 on Classic/Impossible, if you only have lasers then they might be a bit of trouble, especially on Classic, but that's why you save your rockets. You don't need mind shields, again, just kill the sectoid commanders faster.
      You only _really_ care about ammo conservation from the foundry without then Enemy Within DLC. SHIVs are good, everything else is just nice to have. The only reason I rush foundry is because EW gives the Tactical Rigging upgrade which is ballin'.
      If your panic gets unmanageable, just deploy more satellites. You can cancel abductions entirely if you cover all-but-two countries still in the council, it means less missions and rewards but also less risk and geoscape panic.
      You can mostly sell everything except alien alloys, weapon fragments and elerium, selling those is _okay_ but you need a lot of them for research. Better to sell them than to lose the campaign now though. If you like buying the plane consumables, leave 3 of each corpse per consumable that they use, and some research needs corpses but like 5-10 max so you can sell the rest.
      Hope that helps, format your posts better and mention what ingame month and difficulty you're on next time.

      @@kierany9 Sorry for the long question (again.) It's literally just me asking how to deal with Sectopods and giving you details. Thank you for the advice. I ended up all of my problems, besides the panic one (I added another 3 satellites. And assaulted the alien base to reduce worldwide panic by 2. But I'm well aware it's a temporary fix.) I just have one problem now (besides that,) SECTOPODS, how the actual fuck am I supposed to deal with them? (I play on easy, because after 17 playthroughs I swallowed my pride and started playing on the lower difficulties.) I usually deal with them, by using my highly experienced, decked out snipers, and heavies, and distracting them with supports. While I have not sustained casualties this way, I have almost had experienced troops die this way repeatedly. Do you have any tips?

    • @kierany9
      @kierany9  Год назад +1

      @@legion2.047 your troops didn't die so you're handling them just fine. Jokes aside, Sectopods only appear on Terror missions and large UFOs, and you're limited to 2 sectopods per mission (1 in september, 2 in october+) unless you're on Impossible, so you'll usually know when to expect them. Bring HEAT ammo and shredder rockets, and just throw everything you have at them.
      Since you're playing on easy you might also want to know some basic movement tactics so you don't get caught out of position - the kind of stuff that's kind of a prerequisite to playing above Normal but isn't taught in the tutorial.
      1. Don't double-move until you're in combat with aliens. Blue move all your soldiers, then overwatch. If you run into an alien with one soldier, you still have one move to get your soldiers into cover, fire, or hunker, and some soldiers may still have a full turn to act. If you'd double moved, you'd have a soldier stuck in a terrible position that is going to get hit on the alien turn for sure.
      2. Make the riskiest moves first. You ideally want the aliens to run into you when on overwatch so that they don't get to shoot you on their turn, you get your overwatch shots off, and then having a full turn to act but failing that, you want to have as many actions as possible. Move your soldier that's furthest forward first, and then you're very likely to not activate any aliens. (This one also applies in combat, if you run into more aliens with your last guy then you're SOL but if you run into them with your first guy, you have some options)
      3. On that note, move Heavies and Snipers last out-of-combat. Rockets and Headshot can get you out of a jam, but don't work if they've moved before.
      And in combat, remember that 30% = 100% (Risk it enough times, and there is a 100% chance that a 30% shot will land, whether it be on you or the aliens). Don't take risks that can backfire if you have a better option. Half cover sucks, it's still a 50/50 chance to get hit by most aliens, but is better than nothing.

      @@kierany9 thanks for the tips, although I knew 90% of that lol I used to play on higher difficulties, and I did pretty well I just got tired of losing, it turns out 90% of my problems in my old playthroughs were because I assumed plasma weapons were bad because I used light rifles and pistols not knowing that they were the worst ones, and just never used them again.
