Led Zeppelin were the best rock and blues band of all time and this song is a several hundred year old folk song that they adapted and reworked. There are countless other versions of this famous song from many popular artists including Peter Paul and Mary, Simon and Garfunkel and even Dolly Parton.
The hangman took the bribes, including the sex offered by the sister, but still he didn't let the guy go and said "... and now I laugh and pull so hard and see you swinging from the gallows pole". So despite every effort to get freedom he was hung, as the executioner laughed, that's the laughing towards the end of the song.
Led Zeppelin was from 1968 to 1980 when the drummer died. This isn't political...they are British. This was an old folk blues song.
The song is about a man sentenced to death. But in old england, you could bribe the hangman to free you. His friends were too poor. He wouldn't accept the brother's money. And as far as the sister? He "took" her. Had his way then hung her in place of the original convict.

As a drummer or drummers, you’d like drummer John Bonham’s 20 minute drum solo, it’s called
Moby Dick, the best version to watch him closer is live at Earls Court (1975). Bonham even plays with his hands, he’s been called Hammer of the Gods, he’s know for his triplets & powerful sound. By most considered the greatest drummer, & ranks top one or two of all time.

One, it's not just the history black americans. People of all shapes a colors have been hanged in the town square for over a thousand years. Two, it's a traditional song (writer unknown) first made popular by Leadbelly a black american musician. 3. Who the hell are L.E.D. Zeppelin?

Led Zeppelin is a British rock band, one of the best ever. Never thought of them as political. some of their songs were just raw sex (Black Dog, Whole Lotta Love). Robert Plant's voice, Jimmy Page's guitar and John Bonham's drumming and John Paul Jones' bass.
I know hanging is a very touchy subject for black people understandably, this isn’t about that though. Though a good song, not the best first listen song. These guys are truly amazing, & I know you’d love their music I promise. Here’s a few of so many great songs, try studio version of You Shook Me, 3 solos of keyboards harmonica & guitar with great vocals & drums. Live at Madison Square Gardens (1973) Since I’ve Been Loving You, everything from MSG is amazing. Live at Earls Court the May 25,1975 version of In My Time Of Dying, that date is the best audio & visual. These are great Blues Rock songs, & they do Blues justice. These 4 geniuses are each the GOATS of their crafts, & together The GODS Of MUSIC! They preform several genres Rock Blues Funk Folk Reggae Prog etc. they are a great rabbit hole to dive into, I really hope you decide to dive deep. Thanks for your reaction.
You’ve tried all those other bands, Led Zeppelin is the Gold standard, & far exceeded those you’ve listened to, selling over 300 million albums. Robert Plant lead singer & harmonica * Jimmy Page lead guitarist band founder producer mixer * John Paul John’s (JPJ) bass guitar keyboards mandolin * John (Bonzo) Bonham drums, greatest drummer ever. A great rock song Achilles Last Stand live at Knebworth (1979) it’s a killer song.

This song had been passed down from the 1200's, as crazy as that sounds. It's all about a guy pleading with his family to bribe the hangman so he'll be set free instead of hanged. The brother did his part with silver and gold, and his sister screwed the hangman. But in a sick twist, he hung that sister and laughed. A sick S.O.B.
This song is the story of a man in old England who was convicted of a crime and sentenced to death by hanging. He enlists his brother and sister to bribe the hangman with money and sex to be released from the sentence. The hangman takes the money and sex but hangs the convict anyway. A gallows is a platform built specifically for hanging people publicly and was usually erected in a public square.
I’m an old dude and just binge-watched several of your reactions. You made me a subscriber with your appreciation of each song you reviewed - even this song, which you had no context and could only view from the perspective of the world you live in today. I can see how this song can appear distasteful when seeing it through today’s lenses.
I have a recommendation for a song from the same 70’s decade that was a one-hit wonder but emphasis goes on “hit”. The song was extremely popular when it came out. The lyrics to that song could apply to what’s happening in the world today.

Zeppelin were not political. They mostly wrote songs about women doing men badly, etc. Thank God they weren't political!!!!! His friends and brother couldn't buy off the hangman, nor could his sister by giving herself to the hangman. Ultimately, the hangman took the gold and his sister and still pulled the rope...it's a song with a happy ending...at least for the hangman.

Naw Zep never was into political commentary or fake virtue signaling and never anything about race or class ..It was music for listeners to think about life and enjoy while we can.
