Tristan, I had a similar issue with my 80 Series Land Cruiser but it was a very simple fix that I'd try before anything else. The button that you push in to disengage the parking brake. Make sure it's completely screwed in. Literally just spin the button clockwise to make sure it's tight.

Also, make sure the rubber gasket on the sunroof is clean. Road grime builds up and can wick rain past the gasket. And make sure the drain tube isn't blocked with crud.

Thanks for driving across our beautiful state. Born in Tucson 74 years ago. Dad was an old miner and used to drive all over the state on back roads, to see where the old mines were, and whatever else was there. When he could no longer drive I would drive him. Unfortunately we gradually came to find that many of the locations of 50 or more years ago were no longer the same. Many are now overrun with tourists. Don't blame them for wanting to take in our lovely sights, but the charm is gone.

HiTristan! I have been a full timer on the road now for three years, but I lived in eastern Arizona for four years near Springerville, south of Petrified Forest National Park in the tiny hamlet of Greer, at 8300'. I understand why you cut north from Show Low or thereabouts to Winslow, but I want to tell you about the White Mountains of east central Arizona. The drive from Show Low to Springerville on Hwy 260 is one of the most beautiful in Arizona. It traverses the north side of the White Mountains where Mt Baldy rises to 11,400, a massive volcano on the east edge of the Mogollon Rim. It is every bit as impressive as the San Francisco Peaks around Flagstaff. Even more so I think, because it is SO wild and remote. This is the area the wolves were reintroduced some time ago. I saw 2 while I lived there. There are also innumerable Elk and other wildlife. Greer is a high mountain town on the NE side of the mountain at 8300'. Molly Butler Lodge in Greer is a famous place and the longest continuously operating Lodge in Arizona, since 1910 I believe. The headwaters of the Little Colorado River are just above Greer. There is endless boondocking on NF roads above town, and vast mountain prairie at 9000' on the entire NE side of Mt Baldy. A huge area! But wait, go into New Mexico from there, all on 2 lane blacktop and explore El Morro State Park, where pioneers and early explorers left 'graffiti', including an inscription from 1604!!! Truly amazing! Then go north thru El Malpais National Monument, a fantastic area of lava flows and badlands, then check out Valles Caldera, the stunningly beautiful remains of an ancient supervolcano caldera that is truly special. And it's ALL very remote, not well known, which is remarkable in itself, and historically fascinating. Love your videos, would love to meet you someday, I have much knowledge of the remote places in the SW. This summer I will be managing a campground for the Forest Service at South Ruby Lake Campground near the massive Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge on the east side of the Ruby Mountains in NE Nevada. The Rubies are considered one of the most beautiful places in Nevada, the Alps of Nevada! Stop by and say hello, you won't be disappointed! Cheers, keep on trucking'!

Thanks for this. I had to get out my road atlas to locate these places. Good to know about Springerville and Greer--it's a "scenic" route to get there; I was close by in October. I'm definitely enchanted with New Mexico. I tried to camp at El Morro State Park, but it was full. I found a lovely site (to sleep in my car) at Ramah RV Park, and had a wonderful breakfast the following morning at the Ancient Way Cafe before meeting up with some artists to paint at Ramah Lake. The warm, friendly people I encountered were as special as the landscape.

Never knew how Needles got its name until now, it was always just a gas stop and always above 100 degrees in the dead of summer. And Jackson Brown who broke down in his pickup while in Winslow AZ. should be given the song writing credit. He started to write the song 'Take it Easy' about his event there and then later asked Glen Frey of the Eagles to help contribute. It was magical because it became the Eagle's first hit song....take it easy !!

'...According to one interview, Browne started writing “Take It Easy” in the back of a Dodge paneled van in 1971 after his car broke down in *Flagstaff* and some new friends offered him a ride back to Los Angeles.
He was in east Flagstaff when he saw a woman in a *Toyota* truck pulling out of what was then Der Wienerschnitzel at the corner of East Route 66 and North Switzer Canyon...'

This past year i drove from Phoenix up to the Sawtooth Valley in Idaho and back, avoiding interstates as much as possible. In the end I think I only drove about 50 miles of interstate out of a 3000 mile drive. I ended up seeing all kinds of off the beaten path stuff in Utah's west desert, around Twin Falls snd Bruneau Idaho, and all over the state of Nevada. Not every trip works out like this, sometimes you have to make time, but it was great to do a trip where I could give the driving portion some breathing room

When those lights go on your dash it indicates your wheel speed sensors are no longer working. This means that your cruise control, traction control, and ABS braking systems are no longer working. Like you found out your normal breaking will still be functional. Really enjoyed this video so thankyou. I'm an oldtimer Englishman who has travelled many of the areas you've shown, so time to reminisce for me. I have a good friend who lives in Prescott Valley whom I met in 2003 in a campground in the Kaibab forest near the South Rim of Grand Canyon. We Email regularly still. I hiked and camped on Mingus mountain over several days before spending time (again) in Jerome, a town I have visited many times and love. Another area I know is Window Rock. This whole area is close to my heart. I own, and have read many times, all of Tony Hillermans novels based on the Navaho Nation. Its my way of reliving wonderful visits I've made to this, and other Four Corner States since 1989. I'm now knocking on my 80th year, so have to satisfy my urge to travel by reading about, following on my map collection, and videos such as yours, so thank you again.

I used to live in Arizona, back in 1981, and while I wasn't in love with the Phoenix daily heat and dust, I did love driving on the old route 66. The small towns, the mountain views, including the mesas, the buttes and the endless skies. I rarely experienced rain while there, but when it came it would pour straight down out of the sky and transform the area for days afterward.

Some alternate routes when the weather is better:
From the campsite continue on 260 to Payson, Show Low, Indian Pine and Springerville, then US60 into NM. Or you could take US191 south from Springerville to Alpine, or north to Chinle/Canyon de Chelly. If you're up for some dirt road driving and amazing views, turn from 260 onto 87 before Strawberry, then take Forest Road 300 - Rim Road - to drive along the edge of the Mogollon Rim. There are campsites right at the edge. Rim Road reconnects with 260.
From Winslow and the Little Painted Desert, you could continue north through the Navajo Nation into the Hopi Nation. There's free camping next to the cultural center in Second Mesa. You can also learn about guided tours of First Mesa. From there you can take 264 east to Window Rock or west to Tuba City. From Tuba City you can take US160 northeast to Navajo National Monument (with camping) and then to Kayenta where you can take US163 to Monument Valley, eventually connecting to US191 to Moab, etc. Or you can continue on US160 to Four Corners. Then, as long as you're on the road anyway, you could continue on US160 to US491 to Cortez CO, then reconnect to US160 east to Mesa Verde NP. Then backtrack to Dolores to 145 which takes you over Lizard Head Pass to Telluride. That route is much more beautiful and less crowded than the Million Dollar Highway.
Whichever way you go, avoid I-40 unless time is the most important thing. Then hope it isn't shut down because of snow or clogged because of construction or an overturned semi.

There was about a dozen of them in a Packard Touring car, he talked about it quite often, he passed away in 2012 at 101. When I left the east coast to move here, friends wanted to know why I was moving to such a flat state! 😏Prescott, Teddy Roosevelt's favorite town, rumor has it, he stayed at the Hotel St. Michael, the elevator is original. Whiskey Row is a fun place to be during New Year celebrations! It has great art festivals and a 4th of July rodeo. Jerome, the most populated ghost town AZ has, getting into and out of town is half the fun! Montezuma's Castle,(cliff dwellings) home of the Sinagua people, is nearby. I realize I typed too much, but this was a great video and I got excited remembering the places, I've been, even in the rain! So interesting. Glad you stopped and showed the snow as I live in SC and didn't see a single flake all winter. I like rainy cloudy weather so enjoyed that. I drove Route 66 decades ago when I was in the USAF. Left Chester, SC, my hometown and drove all the way to Hamilton AFB across the bay from Frisco. Took a side trip and drove through LA which was quite an experience for a small town Airman. Everybody wanted me to drive faster and/or get out of the way which I did; I took an off ramp to stop and try to collect myself all the while being watched by a patrolman. I went up the coastal highway to Frisco. A beautiful drive. Glad I found you, Tristan, as I can vicariously enjoy the scenery through you.
Oh, wanted to be sure you arm yourself as you stop alongside some wild roads.

I enjoyed this video very much. I just have to say that if you like old mining towns like Prescott, you should certainly check out Silver City, NM! Brick buildings, tons of charm and the Gateway to the huge Gila Wilderness, the first in the country and, I believe, the world. The North Star Road (FR 150) is about a 100 mile dirt road separating the Gila and Aldo Leoplold Wilderness areas and is a great adventure in itself; crossing the Continental Divide Trail several times. Love the channel and thank you!

This drive is now on my bucket list. I grew up in Albuquerque, lived in the SLC area for 20 years. Took my family on many road trips throughout the 4 corners area, Wyoming and surrounding Yellowstone NP. I've been in the Niagara Falls, NY area for about 20 years and now retired. Converting a 92 Suburban for trips like this. Thanks for sharing!

If you are back in the Window Rock area, you should definitely drive Navajo Rt. 12, which travels north from there and crosses the AZ/NM border several tines. So scenic, with really cool geology and rock formations, and it also takes you through the heart of the Navajo National Forest. It eventually reaches the road that leads to the northern rim of Canyon de Chelly National Monument. Great video as always.

That background music while driving has that 1970's vibe, reminds me of Climax Blues Band, 10cc, Ambrosia, Ace, America, Bread, early Hall & Oats, Seals & Crofts, Rare Earth, Player, Orleans, Atlanta Rythm Section, Jefferson Starship! Music that makes the trip much better!

14:09 When I saw that county building my brain went back at least 40 years to the last time I saw the movie "Billy Jack." The impression was so strong I had to Google and, indeed, the movie was filmed, in part, in Prescott, and the fight scene was filmed on the sidewalk with the grounds of that building as the backdrop. Strange what's stored in your brain that you have no need for.

Have you ever thought about doing a Idaho backroad trip? I know you’d have to wait till July 15 for some of the roads to open up but there’s a lot to check out. Bridges, ghost towns, rivers, lakes, and the best part, fire lookout towers. There’s also a road up north that goes through an old railroad with tunnels and bridges.

My mother and I visited Oatman in the early 90s. Around November. The town had decorated a few bushes along the road to town in Christmas decor. I did take pictures of them but when they were developed, they came out with funny colors and lines in them. My pictures of the town came out OK though. Kind of spooky. Loved the town.
