The National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and/or the Bureau of Land Management should hire you as their spokesperson. Your passion and joy radiate throughout your videos.
Thank you for bringing us along! I don’t think that most people realize the amount of work you put into these videos. Placing the camera, getting the shot and then going back for the camera, only to once again go back over the same terrain, just to move on and then do it all again. Plus all the video editing that has to be done. Thank you. Cheers and safe travels
Hey Moses, you finally entered the land of milk and honey, lol…. What a cool vid! Love the keyhole canyons, petroglyphs, hike, and scenery. Thanks again for another great adventure!
Love the Seven Keyhole hike, the magical grotto, all the interesting rock art & the timelapse drive WOW Glad you have some new shoes with good tread. 😊 Quiet & no people 😎😎😎😎😎Also AMAZING campsite!!!
Loved this video, Tristan, and I love Gold Butte. I've been several times, starting before it was a National Monument. I think it is worthy of National Park status, but would hate to see it overrun. I camped in my motor home at Whitney Pocket and went to most of the key features, but never the town of Gold Butte. That region of Nevada has many little known places worth visiting. If you haven't already, check out the following: Buffington Pocket near Valley of Fire; the Fire Bowl near Lake Mead; Owl Canyon near Lake Mead; Grapevine Canyon; Upper and Lower Arrow Canyon (separated by a dam) for neat petroglyphs; St. Thomas, an old Mormon town once covered by Lake Mead, where the Powell Expedition ended back in the day.
Wow, long video, but well worth the time! Always wondered what Gold Bute really looked like, and it certainly didn't disappoint! As always enjoyed the car-timelapses that give a great indication of what the environment is like :-)
That It was once occupied what we call remote, is what impresses me. And that they had time to write visual impressions in a common written language, we fail to decipher. Perhaps it was simply a common art form they all enjoyed. As you do.
This place is up there with your video of the Wind River Range hike, which is one of my favorites. This is so unique, intriguing, and beautiful. What nice artwork and rock formations you found. Those canyons were so nice. Great video, thanks for taking us along.
I haven't written a comment in a while because I'm always so busy, but I do watch all your vids. This is an epic vid. It was all impressive and remarkable. Thank you Tristan.
Love it ALL! You show such a selection of cool and beautiful things. I loved that narrow little crack where you found the rock art…it looked like a giant bee!! And the cute burro was a treat.
Your enthusiasm is infectious, and it shows your work. I love that you do a combination of places I could never get to alongside places I could, and you show many many places I doubt I would come across any other way. Thank you for all your hard work you put into your trips and videos.
What a great day of exploring this incredibly unique area. Fantastic rock art - so many images that I've not seen before. Thanks for the virtual exploration!
See. Now this is why I find your channel so fascinating. This, where you are now and how you got there, is ALMOST exactly how myself and a group of acquaintances discovered Lake Powell. We were exploring some desert trails slash roads believing we were going deeper and deeper into the desert, when we came upon an oasis, at first, then realized it was Lake Powell. But that first moment we came upon a similar cove and we couldn't see the water extending into the lake, we assumed otherwise. We felt like, The First People, or just had that feeling of discovery, if you will. We'd come upon a paradise, and then camped out there for a few days, exploring the surroundings by foot. Until then had always poo-pooed the desert as being unremarkable. However, it was Spring and the desert was alive with all sorts of color with everything blooming. It was one helluva wonderful time! (and discovered how easy it was to get stuck in the sand, that was near the lake)
Wow!!! Tristan, did you see the incredible large face on the rock at 26:13-18? Center right, maybe 10 ft high. Really full lips. A nose above the lips and two eyes! Incredible!! Blew me away! I love all your posts. Been watching for a couple years. I’m a big fan. I love rock art so this episode is a favorite. Kudos to you: I’ve seen dozens of petroglyphs videos on other channels and seen hundreds of “goat” etchings but you are the first to say they must be Rocky Mountain Bighorns, which is what I’ve known to be true just because of the shape of the animals and their horns. Go take a look at that face and thanks so very much for each of your videos over the years.
I say this every year, but love when you are exploring MY backyard - and love that you remind me to get out there and see more!! Haven't been to GB since 2016 and its almost time to visit again. I'm your number one fan from Nevada...thank you Tristan!!
What an interesting place to break in your new shoes. And "Of course, you're the only one there"... that's why I enjoy your channel so much. All my other bookmarks are for Overlanders, which, at 71 years of age, I have become. And even though my modified 4Runner has replaced my legs for the most part in my adventures, my FEET still need attention. After watching a previous video back in September when you mentioned those shoes, we did a lot of hiking on our October trip and upon coming back, I ordered a pair of those La Sportiva Wildcats. They are the most amazing shoes I've ever owned. I also purchased your book Hiking Arches National Park. This may sound "opinionated", but I'm sure I'll be wearing those shoes the next time I visit Arches. Thank you for your dedication in bring all of us these adventures.
Used to go out here all the time about 20 years ago. Not as much now. Sometimes, when someone comes into Vegas who doesn't want to do Vegas things. After they made it a national monument, they blocked off areas I used to go, and it attracted more visitors. The trip down to the lake can get a little sketchy , especially after some heavy rains.
Welcome back to my backyard. Gold Butte is very Serene and beautiful. But once they pave the roads, Gold Butte will be as busy as Zion. So we have to enjoy it while we can.
I'm visited a fair amount of this part of the world, Lake Mead, Joshua Tree, Death Valley, the usual stuff. What I love about your videos is that you go to corners I'll never visit, it provides so much context. Great stuff.
Interesting tour and analysis of a seemingly remote area in the vicinity of Lake Mead. The key to today's adventure...? A rig like yours and a spare gas can or two! Thanks for sharing!
You mentioned your preference for non- gortex shoes in another video. Your reasoning is one of a million things that never occurred to me. It makes perfect sense, and I hope I remember it the next time I'm shopping for hiking shoes! Thanks for another fantastic video! I never get tired of the canyons
I had to pause the video when you're showing off the shoes, they are SO good! I bought a pair like 1,5-2 years ago after seeing your videos and I'm on my 3rd pair now. Thank you for the recommendation back then and hope more people will get a chance to try em on thanks to you :D
@@SUVRVing Regarding shoe wear: If the rubber is a bit sticky then the softer rubber is going to wear more quickly, there's no getting around it... but that's a worthwhile trade-off for more secure footing, especially in slick-rock country. Thx for the recommendation.
Hey Tristan, you missed a bunch more rock art at the back of the 7 keyholes slots when you took that right turn! This is my favorite National Monument! Love your videos!
Getting a big kick out of your channel, Tristan. Reminding me to go for another snowshoe here in Colorado. Liking your style and narration. Keeping further west in mind.
I would have to agree, "WOW" I love the idea of anticipating your future generations following in your foot steps through the summit logs, do you keep a diary of sorts to provide them with a list of targets? What were the animals crossing the road at 33:25? I always appreciate the extra "miles" you go in filming your hikes. Placing and moving the camera must double your effort but, it is truly appreciated.
👵I took a far out road trip w/my Austalian Sheppard in the wrong time of the year some years ago in a diesel truck. It was from Inmaha, Oregon to Dug Bar near the Devils Canyon. I probably wouldn't recommend it unless u have some savy about repairs that might need attention. Definitely shouldn't take a heavy truck in like I did. . . My pilot bearing went out and God blessed me the ability 2 get out of there and back home w/o calling 4 help. . . Awesome views there as I had 2 stop about 2 doz. times going in. . .and about half that amount going out. . . Mountain goats 🐐 greeted me and not any other souls out there. Yes, there was a camp ground at Dug Bar. . . God Bless. 🤗💝🙏
Those keyholes were unbelievable and my favorite thing in this video but so many things could be mentioned. I’ll add that your Landcruiser is handling business in a major way! Great, great video!
Gold Butte N.M. is a very cool place , if it is ever turned in to a Park it would take away some of the wonder of the place. The lack of people and the vastness with the historic nature both native and white-man will bring me back, we were there in 2018 and watching this shows me there is more signage and more designated parking spots then our prior visit. Thanks for the video.
I’ve tried remote camping (just my dog and I) and couldn’t get that much enjoyment without another person to share the moment with. But obviously it’s not like that for other people and that gives me another perspective to consider. Thank you.
The key holes! It felt like part of a Quest, and truly magical. Your photography just keeps getting better and better and the joy you have in the truly remote and quiet areas is contagious! Thanks again. And Again!
Again, thank you, Tristan, for showcasing all the beauty of my home state other than Vegas. I have resided in Vegas for over 45 years but my family has many, many wonderful camping trips on both Lake Mead and Mt. Charleston. Although Lake Mead is brutally hot in the summer, fall, winter and spring provides enjoyable weather for camping, fishing and lots of wildlife sightings. And of course, boating. Wonderful video!
The red sandstone at Gold Butte, Valley Of Fire, Red Rock Canyon and elsewhere in this part of Nevada is known as the Aztec Sandstone, and is the equivalent of the Navajo Sandstone in Utah. It does have a bit of different character than the Navajo in Zion, resulting from all the crustal stretching and faulting that has occured in the region.
I ❤ brighty ! ...About the [earlier] shoes comment-- add urban cycling/urban mountain biking, and [shoes] go even quicker because you have to 'put your foot down' a lot faster and more frequent. But, in terms of the desolation and access to textural imagery, that is quite creatively inspirational Lucky you ! I am wondering if the seven keyhole were lava tubes with crustacial weathering later, or ?
Great video as always. Loved the keyhole hike. Still my favorite Utube channel. The red rocks and petroglyphs were amazing. The campsite, who would have thought. Thanks.
Valley of Fire. I had a short drive thru in 2019 as the sun was setting. The antelope eating by the side of the road & didn't care about the passing cars. They were starving & eating madly. Covid ruined my visiting parts of NV. Also those horrid fires in CA that came into NV. Really brought me to a stop.
Thanks for sharing this trip. At 23:15 it looks like 2 warriors nose to nose at the key hole 3. These places are only few hours drive for me. Got my list of places to visit.
I love Nevada and miss living there. I have camped out on a island on Lake Meade. Wind blew all night long. Had to keep checking on the boat all night. Great video this week. I enjoyed it so much. Thank you
I've been to Gold Butte but missed the keyhole hike. That just gives me good reason to go back. It's only an hour from where I live, longer actually if you include the dirt road. Amazing campsite at the end. Nice.
My favorite part was when I had to get out the delorme map book and try to focus on those coordinates because that really makes me want to go to the desert. Right now.😊
dude you are on a roll lately and this one did not disappoint. one of my fav rving, camping, exploration type channels. im close enough to that area that i’m going to research going there soon. Can’t believe i didn’t know about it before. I love valley of fire and the Joshua tree forest near there so im sure id love this place too.
The best explanation that I’ve heard on how the petroglyphs get so high on the rocks is from some of the guides at antelope canyons who explained to us that the sand level can vary as much as 10-20 feet based on how much the rains created flash floods. In canyons land is always wondered about the height of the pioneer art until I heard her plausible explanation.
Amazing video! Loved the art and the key holes. That little donkey was worth watching. What a little trooper. I’m going to be watching more of your videos. TYFS 👋
What a rich and varied episode! You have outdone yourself with this one. I find myself wishing I had gotten a high clearance vehicle when I bought my class B van so I could go there too. But it was great following along with you. Thank you!
Another Great video! Thank you! I just hopped on real quick to see if anyone else saw what looks like a face carved into the red rock at 26:12? There’s eyes, a long nose and a beautifully curved mouth on the rock face! Totally possible I’m just seeing things… but I thought it was worth mentioning 😉
Somehow, I think you drive by and miss some of the beauty of Gold Butte. At the top is an area similar to Joshua Tree NM with many unique granite formations. The Gold Butte mining area has several roads that spoke out to other beautiful areas such as Devils Kitchen. The best one goes north toward Utah but eventually meanders down to the Colorado River and Lake Mead area again. You can see the end of the Grand Canyon.
Hi Tristan, we recently saw you in 'Q' I'm glad to see you've explored 7 Keyholes. Been there twice. Climbed up, down, inside and out. Plan to go back this year. We also met "Don the Donkey." He woke us up once in the middle of the night with his loud braying. He was probably calling to the rest of the herd. We saw at least a dozen last year.
I live south of this place and we have similar petroglyphs. One thing that I see that is common is that it looks like there's some sort of solar event that burnt these rocks and the natives that came after carved their art into the burnt portions unless somebody else has a better idea.
I enjoyed your video very much, I've been to some of the places you were at. We camped at Gold Butte a dozen times or more. We rode mostly east of where you were. I was younger then and we covered a lot of country that vehicles couldn't go. It's a great place to go in the winter between storms. Thanks for your video. df
I love to follow your videos! You find and share the neatest places! I never saw anyone get so excited from dirt. But you find the beauty of it. Thank you

😊I do the same thing, I know I am not going to be disappointed. He has excellent videos
Indeed, and this one is Prime example. Love little things that are covered.
Ditto. Will never get to see all the beautiful places Tristan shows us in person but because of him I get to enjoy them too.
Me too!!

The light reflecting off the red rocks is amazing

dude you are on a roll lately and this one did not disappoint. one of my fav rving, camping, exploration type channels. im close enough to that area that i’m going to research going there soon.
Hi Tristan, we recently saw you in 'Q'
I'm glad to see you've explored 7 Keyholes.

Donkeys are awesome, very sociable creatures. Awesome video, thank you.
I always get a kick out of seeing them 😁
I love to follow your videos! You find and share the neatest places! I never saw anyone get so excited from dirt. But you find the beauty of it. Thank you
