Well, it finally arrived. I bought this book after my book review video recently. But, it's not making any sales. In fact, the only sale it's made is the one book I bought. Which is a shame because this book is superb in every aspect - cover and interior. So it was time to look at what I would do to this book's listing and what marketing I would put in place to get this KDP low content activity book making sales. It would be possible to get his book bringing in over $2k in royalties per month and create a nice passive income for the author and publisher. I go through step by step, do some keyword analysis, discuss pricing, changes to the title and how I would run an effective Amazon Ads campaign to get this book in front of customers as I'm certain they would buy something of this quality. If you have KDP no content and low content books that are experiencing a similar lack of sales then use the process I go through here to create a publication that actually sells and brings in a nice income.

Why when you research a keyword you stay in any department results if you go to books sometimes it have a lot more books results so more competion

Fantastic video Paul! This gives me hope. I'm an experienced designer and illustrator who recently began publishing on KDP. I know that visually and content-wise my books are better than about 90% of what I've seen on the platform. Based on what I've learned from your channel and others I'm choosing good niches and I think my title, description, and keywords are solid yet so far I feel my sales are a bit underwhelming. I'm starting to realize that even with all of these factors in place it doesn't necessarily equate to sales. I just started running ads on a few of my books. I'm competent that if I can just get them in front of people they should sell, but even the best books won't sell if no one knows they exist.

I’ve started to see people setting the price at the absolute minimum required and spending a lot of money to rank in ads…FYI. I assume that they will raise the price eventually.

Paul, thanks for the interesting analysis. Hope this book will get a rocket like start after applying the suggested changes. About chaning the subtitle I would like to know how to do that. In KDP and in the help pages is stated, that a re-publishing needs to be done. Wouldn't the sales history get lost then?

That’s correct. Which, for this book wouldn’t matter. I have heard you can email KDP support and they might change the subtitle for you.

Wacom Intuos pro and yes I create ad groups but not always. I’m not running lots and lots of ads.

I have a question about using Disney characters, Im working on a new book that is Disney related, but i got the illustrations from a stock image where designers upload their work, is there any risk in using that kind of illustrations in KDP?
Absolutely. If you use Disney characters you have a good chance of being sued and getting your account banned no matter where you got the images from.

Hi Paul, you mention in the video that it is not possible to use the keyword „Journal“ cause it’s trademarked. Does that also mean I can’t use it in the 7 keyword fields during the upload? I wanted to use journal and journaling but don’t wanna get into trouble for it 🤣 thanks a lot for your help!
Are you sure it was Journal I said was trademarked because it certainly isn’t. It’s safe to use. 👍
Hi, cool video! One question: When you had a book being quite successful after doing the described steps, how long did it take to become successful?
Usually 4-6 weeks you get a good idea if it’s going to be successful.
Just curious do you do like consulations? Like if someone was wondering what could they change about their cover or title?

I have a question, if a customer decides to return the book for whatever reason, do we as book creator have to do/handle something, or Amazon will completely take care of that ?
Amazon will take care of it all. One of the big benefits of this business.

KDP will collect any tax on the sales of the books and pay it to the respective agency. You are the author and they are the publisher. You pay any personal income tax on the profit you make to your respective tax collecting agency in your own country from the royalty check you get from Amazon.
Yes, I pay taxes on the royalties I get paid.

If you mean one side of paper black then yes if you want to do that. Sketchbooks don’t usually have those though. And yes, I Spy is trademarked and you can check trademarks yourself at uspto.gov

Yes, it most definitely can. The majority of my books including my bestseller have never run ads.

No, it’s not possible unless you create an Amazon Sellers Account and resell the books, you’d have to list and purchase yourself, as a bundle.

Hey Paul, can you please make a video about updating keywords on LC books that may already be making some sales? I have a book that I'm making some sales on the UK market, but nothing in the US market. So I wanted to update some keywords to, hopefully, get a bit more exposure in the US market. But since it's selling on UK, I'm afraid that making changes will affect my UK sales. If you have any tips to share for that, it'd be great help. Many thanks in advance!
If you wanna update the keywords you'll have to unpublish the book, edit it, and re submit the book (which will make your book go through another manual review process) and wait again. About the sales history, am not quite sure tho.
You don't need to unpunish the books just change the keywords and submit
Thanks for the replies. I know physically HOW to do it. But I just don't know if there's a good way to determine which keywords to keep and which ones to replace, etc. so that it doesn't affect my current UK sales.
There is no real way to know which keywords are getting your sales. It’s most likely those mainly in the title and sub title. If you are getting UK sales I would leave it for the moment as often books will start selling in the UK first before starting to sell in the US. If you decide to alter keyword just change one or two. If sales drop then put them back in. It’s a lot of trial and error.

At the moment just two books.

Is it a regular name or does it have proprietary rights?
I don’t know about the rights of that particular name. You would have to do your research. You can’t edit the author name once published. You would have to unpublish it and re-publishing with the new name.
