    Episode Notes:
    1. Super Mario 1, 2, 3 captured from the NES Classic. Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island captured from the SNES Classic. Super Mario Land captured from a Super Game Boy. Super Mario Land 2, Doki Doki Panic, Super Mario 2 FDS captured from emulation.
    2. I still own all these games.
    3. I fell off the Super Mario bandwagon with Mario Sunshine. I just couldn't get into that one.
    4. I did enjoy some of the spinoff sports games.
    5. I wanted to stick to the main Super Mario platformers for this episode. That's why you don't see stuff like Super Mario RPG. I will definitely touch upon those in the future, however.
    6. For those interested in my order in preference, it goes like this:
    Super Mario 64
    Super Mario Bros. 2(USA)
    Super Mario Bros. 3
    Super Mario World
Super Mario World 2 Yoshi's Island
    Super Mario Bros.
    Super Mario Land
Super Mario Bros. 2(The Lost Levels)
    Super Mario Land 2

What differentiated SMB from other games was actually the complexity of the game: there's physics with destructible environment, acceleration, deceleration, lots of interactions, and of course all of this had to be balanced perfectly to elevate the gameplay. Crazy that they were able to do all that on the NES.

Quick hit memories: dad was purely a shooter (1941/1942 mainly) and pinball guy back then, but I can as clear as day remember him/his friends drinking cans of something I wasn't allowed to have (which my adult brain has established was beer) and attempting to beat Super Mario 3 (I don't remember Mario 1 as a kid for obvious reasons - I was 2). Also have many memories of my mom asking me to hook up the NES so she could play Dr. Mario. Because of my years of practice vs my mom, I wiped the floor with my friend's overconfident fiance (now wife) a few years back and she still hasn't forgotten.

While I fully understand that the home gaming scenes in Europe and Japan never had a crash like in North America in '83, it was SMB success that reignited the video game market here. As far as I'm concerned it is responsible for gaming as we know it.

I remember seeing Super Mario for the Nes at someone's house and wanting a Nes. It was my first time seeing a game this different from what I was used to on the Atari 2600. After playing and enjoying my own copy (the one with Duck Hunt), I also went on to enjoy Super Mario 2 and Super Mario 3, the latter of which is still one of those games I still replay today.
Then when I got the N64 and Super Mario 64 I remember just standing at the waterfall outside of the castle and thinking how realistic it looked, ha! This kind of first-time experiences always makes me smile when I think about it. Growing up and seeing all these changes was fun and not something noticeable in today's games.

Good stuff man! As an owner of the original NES (non-Deluxe) Set from the NY launch. I got the system in October 1985 as a birthday present. I was also watching no less than ten stores here for Super Mario Bros. to come out and I didn't see it hit here until a few months later in February 1986. If you see some of the early news reports for this, and even Wil Wheaton, from issue #1 (Feb 1987) of the Nintendo Fun Club News, he said "We've had SUPER MARIO BROS. at home since March [of 1986]".
I personally think [February of 1986] is the official USA release date for Super Mario Bros. on NES. Nintendo would rather keep it as 1985 for both Japan, and USA. So they can keep the "Since 1985" tagline. It's within five months, but I wish Nintendo would be more honest about the release date here.If it was in fact in October 1985, I'd love to know WHERE! :) -Matt/VGO

That was one area Nintendo destroyed Sega in. The transition from from 2D IP's to 3D almost always went seamless (almost..looking at you DK64).
The Mario series always set the standard of whatever the mainline platform at the time was, and that is what makes it the all time GOAT Videogame series.

What world had going for it was the movement which was much better than 3 but I feel 3 had more to it. All the landscapes in World are very same-y and it's lacking power ups compared to 3. SMB3 feels like more of an adventure across many lands and more much more focused.

Feels good gaining the perspective from a gamer that lived through the high times of those games like me....even if you were a Sega kid lol, I preferred Nintendo but like you I was old enough to use my own money to buy so I had a genesis too. It makes me feel old when I see gamers on RUclips saying " oh I was 7 years old when Mario sunshine came out and it was my first Mario game I played " lol

I remember going to do laundry with my mom and going into the K-Mart next door to look around. I found a TV and a SNES sitting on a mountain of boxes for said SNES and TV, creating a "demo unit" if you will. I proceeded to stand there and have my mind blown playing it while my mom finished the laundry. Growing up in the wild west of technology was wild. 😂

Always love hearing about your personal experiences with games, especially long running franchises. I've got a ton of memories around Mario as well; from being absolutely enthralled with the first three Super Mario Bros titles as they released to being astonished at Super Mario World cramming so much content into a launch titles. When Mario 64 first hit I was of course very interested and being a 13 year old with no income to speak of did manage to rent the console to give it a try only to find it was so radically different I kind of didn't like it at first, still after an hour or so it all clicked it absolutely defined the 3d platformer genre for me.

I love "Super Mario Bros. 2" so much that I will practically defend it from anyone who hates it just because of the game being a re-skin of "Doki Doki Panic!", especially since everyone tends to forget that the latter was actually worked on by the exact same people behind "Super Mario Bros." to begin with.

We had a video rental store that stocked Japanese Famicom games with cartridge adapters on them for rent.
We rented Mario 3 even before The Wizard hit theaters. We were some of the first Americans to ever play SMB3.
We waited and waited and waited for it to finally come out in America. I never knew it was pretty much an entire year we waited for it to release until you just said so.

Mario started out my gaming experience entirely, way back around 2004 on my cousin's Gamecube. The very first game I ever played was Mario Kart Double Dash!!, and what a game it was! I was 5 years old and barely had any idea how to play the game, but I was having fun with my cousin all the same. That and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle made me look forward to playing the Gamecube every time I visited, and is a major reason why those two franchises are my absolute favorites. Unfortunately, my cousin passed away about 5 years ago, but those memories come back and admittedly make me tear up a bit when I play all the Gamecube titles we used to enjoy together.

    THANK YOU for two things:
    - Pronouncing the name of the NES series as "Super Mario BROTHERS" (instead of "brose/broz" as 99% of all RUclipsrs seem to do);
    - Not slamming Super Mario Land 1 (as, again, 99% of all RUclipsrs, and the Internet at large, seem to do).

Awesome upload SLX! Loved it! I love seeing games and consoles from back in the day that I DIDN'T own such as the Mario games and NES/SNES consoles. My family was on the SEGA side during the 8 and 16-bit generations but we jumped shipped to the Nintendo branding with the N64 for the 32-bit and beyond generation. The NES was never popular over here in Auz, the Master System from SEGA pissed all over it, quite the opposite across the pond in North America of course.
Lucky for me, there is a Super Mario Bros unlicensed release on the Mega Drive which is pretty much identical to the original Nes game. Heh, heh I can play it on my EverDrive.

As a wise Derek Buck from CGR Undertow once said: "You can divide any game ever created and divide then into two categories: the ones that came before Super Mario Bros. and the ones that came after." It's so true.
P.S. While Super Mario World is my favirite game of all-time, Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA) is the true sequel in my eyes and my favorite Mario game on the NES (just narrowly edging out the legendary Super Mario Bros 3...a great big thank you to the legend that is Howard Phillips (the one and true Game Master) for making it all possible.
P.P.S. Super Mario RPG should never be counted out either...another legendary game in a long line of legendary games.
