    It never ceases to amaze me how many of my trainees who have been driving cars for years don't think about either getting positively up to speed or matching the speed of vehicles in lane 1. This lack of progress and planning often causes all kinds of problems with cars on the main carriageway looming up on, usually me! 😂

      It's always a worry when an associate dawdles on to the dual carriageway. Until I've seen how they ride I tend to hold back much more and may join behind the vehicle they join in front of.

    This was something I struggled with for a long time - even in my observer training, because I was doing it wrong and going into lane 1 and THEN accelerating, I lost my LOA and had to play catchup. It's one of these things that are like zipper situations, most people get it wrong but think they're doing the best thing possible. Use all the safe available space

      Slip roads are also called acceleration and deceleration lanes.

      IT very very dangerous to a enter any slip road presuming that you can easily slip into any oncoming traffic. and then try to marry the speed of the vehicle in any dual carriageway. Most are doing the max of 60 mph. an some more than that. If one then closes ones eyes and presumes that one is doing it right then you have a lot to learn about courtesy. The courtesy of others to allow you to enter into their space, especially the space directly in front of them. They are not worried if you enter behind them at all. So long as they are past you and in front of you. They don't mind. . As they wont let you in then you are in real trouble especially if you have following traffic, accelerating at you are doing
      Someone said its like zipping in two queues of traffic towards an obstruction ahead. . Believe me its nothing like that at all. The traffic on the dual carriageway has the right of way at all times. .

      @@rcraven1013 More positivity again, nowhere have I said I expect to be let on to the dual carriageway.! If they are far enough behind me there's absolutely no reason why I can't join ahead of them ... or are you going to sit there all day waiting for an empty lane one? And when did the speed limit on a dual c/w become 60mph?

      @@mikeroberts You never said so but others may presume so and use the slip road as they would as if it were a motorway and therefore they have an expectation that the traffic on the dual carriageway will feel obliged to give way to them. I also agreed with you and supported the warning that you gave about the slip roads sometimes being shorter and also one may have difficulty in achieving a safe entry speed. Or, as in many cases there is a lot of traffic preventing one from continuing and then as you say and I also said then the junction becomes more like a give way one.
      As regards to the speed limit yes what i initially wrote was in error and has be corrected, I did not mean it to be that speed. That said a dual carriageway would generally have a speed limit of 70 mph but sometimes its reduced and around here, by me, many dual carriageways have a lower speed limit as low as 50 mph sometimes. . Plus if we look at speed limits for vehicles then its only some cars and motorcycles that can do up to 70 mph. where 70 mph is legal. Most other vehicles in fact all other vehicles are limited to just that 60 mph limit. H.C. s. 124. refers to cars towing caravans or trailers,buses, coaches and minibuses, goods vehicles under 7.5 ton and goods vehicles exceeding 7.5 ton. I presume that it will also include some cars that may now weight over 2 ton in weight.

      U I agree but many drivers and riders do expect what the have become used to when on a slip road for a motorway. That is to be let on. However as said on many a slip road other than on a motorway the speeds are the same but i have found that the slip road is only half or a third in distance of a motorway slip road and for a time one is travelling parallel to other traffic so its makes vision of approaching traffic sometimes very difficult.
      Just the other day I was out riding with two friends and leading them past such a slip road. Its about the only one we have within some miles from home. As leader I had past the slip road and my mate, second in line was running parallel with it and there was a white car coming down the slip road, along side of him or slightly behind him and accelerating onto our main road. Speeds were about 60 mph. plus and the woman driver was apparently just kept pace with my mate. He could not give way due to overtaking traffic and presumed that the car would slow but it didn't. Then at the last second she drove out of the slip road early and forced her way onto the main road and nearly took him out missing him by a foot. This was seen by my daughter the third rider in the group.
      Later on at traffic lights only some 300 metres down the road she had words with the lady driver of the car who complained that she had not being let onto the road and she wanted to get onto it in front of my mate. My daughter put her right as to the law and the danger that she had placed my mate in.
      He is 89 years of age and has ridden bikes all his adult life and all over the world for at least 3 generations, 75 years and he nearly lost it due to the incompetence and selfishness of another.
      Its one thing making a nice safe video of the same slip road three times. A slip road that appears to be an extra long entrance to a main road. The truth is that one has to be extremely careful and vigilant as the circumstance I have mentioned can and do happen all to frequently. @@mikeroberts

    A pet hate of mine is those drivers who are on a sliproad and stay at about 40mph, expecting me to facilitate their entry onto the main road. Any vehicle has much better braking than acceleration, and it is easier to lose speed at the end of a sliproad if unable to merge than it is to desperately try to accelerate in the last few yards. The traffic in Lane 1 usually moves at around the mid fifties MPH, so briskly get to that kind of speed and you will usually merge easily.

    Hi, I failed my MOD 2 in a situation like the last example where the driver kindly moved over. The examiner said the rules state if my actions result in another driver having to change direction it’s a fail. Seems like a totally unfair rule to me as it’s taken out of your control especially if you are following a car on the slip road

      The requirement then is to hold back and time your arrival. Obviously I didn't see your test but if the car ahead on the slip road is not getting up to speed, then increase the gap to it. There's a difference between a vehicle on the main road that has moved to lane 2 to allow you to merge and a vehicle that has had to slow or move because you came out. A subtle, but important difference.

    Absolute rubbish. We re not talking about motorways here at all. I know of several slip roads that are downright dangerous,. Unlike a slip road on a motorway the ones that I come across are too short and not wide enough to allow drivers on a single carriageway or a dual carriageway to give way, They are not obliged to give way to you at all and in many circumstances that I have come across they don't or won't allow you entry. That causes the driver on the slip road to slow or even have to stop in order to have safe room to gain access to that road.
    They might as well have a stop sign and be required to stop as it would be dangerous to just believe that one can drive down or along any slip road and expect to have room to slip into any stream of traffic. It doesn't work that way. So one can fool oneself by driving or riding into danger if one presumes or assumes that one can easily expect to slip into traffic by merely being on any slip road and that others will give way to you. Not bloody likely..

      Yet another constructive comment from you Mr Craven. NOT! Did you actually watch and listen to all of it, or just go straight to keyboard? Nowhere in the video do I mention motorways or say that I expect to be let on to the dual c/w, in fact I even say you may have to stop. I also point out that each slip road has be treated differently and that SOME are so short you have to STOP and treat them as a T junction. Using the provided slip road with good observation, matching your speed, choosing a joining point. Doing it all well is a skill of riding/driving at a high level.

      @@mikeroberts, excellent video and explanation of using a slip road Mike, judge each on its own merit, using the slip road to gain and match the speed of vehicle's on the main carriageway is safer and smoother, as you rightly said some have to be treated as a T junction as they are simply to short, one or two joining the A12, coming from Stoke by Nayland direction for example, this is where observation, anticipation and planning comes in, knowing where it is suitable to make progress but also where restraint is required, once again excellent video, ignore the trolls and keyboard warriors for they know not what they do, keep up the good work

      @@mikeroberts I understand where you are coming from but would suggest that the comments that I have made are all constructive and therefore positive ones. .Yes you do say that all slip roads are not the same length. That one that you apparently travel at least some 30 times a day and have no trouble riding down is some 250 metres long tho you do admit that their lengths can vary that one is particularly long in my estimation. Certainly as long as one would find on a motorway .However, the one I mentioned was by comparison a short one and would have been about one quarter of that distance. So only some 60 meters in all. So my friends circumstance could have been much different to yours. Plus he was on the main road and the car that created the danger was using what slip road there was.
      You also mentioned on the third occasion that the traffic in the inside lane had eventually moved over to the right hand lane as if that was an expectation and so I mentioned that one cannot expect any vehicle to do that at any time and so not to anticipate it.
      My comments were not at all a criticism of what you were experiencing but putting forward my own experience and that of others all in support or your endeavours to show safer riding.
      So to reply, my comments were in no way critical of you or that such criticism were of a negative nature is truly not the case. I merely pointed out a circumstance that had occurred to my knowledge and one that could hopefully stick with your viewers and perhaps benefit them to be more experienced and safer on the road.They were based on my own experiences and that of others known to me.
