"Perfect Tommy give her your coat. Why? Because you're perfect. You've got a point there." How can you not love this movie, and yes I saw it in the theater!
Yeah, I saw Buckaroo in the theatre. And yeah, if you don't love Buckaroo, we can be friendly acquaintances, but we can never be real friends. 'Hey, Hey, Hey. Don't be mean. We don't have to be mean. 'Cuz remember, no matter where ya go, there ya are.'
There are actors in this movie that I have followed for their whole careers just because they were in Buckaroo Banzai. Clancy Brown is a legend and I hate when he's the villain in movies.
Been having all these Buckaroo Banzai documentaries popping up on my RUclips lately. Well done algorithm. Best thing about it, sounds like everyone had a great time making this film. Nice to know, because I always have a great time watching it.
I met him at a comic con in 2003, he was so cool and was always ready to say a few lines from Highlander, Starship Troopers or whatever. And he was such a deep voice. But oddly enough more people were asking him to do mr.Krabs or the guard from Shawshank Redemption.
From the moment I first read about Buckaroo Bonsai in Starlog Magazine, I knew I had to see it once it released. It definitely did not disappoint. Funny thing is, in the early 80’s, we weren’t even phased by its wackiness. It made it that much more awesome!
I've always laughed at the people who after watching the movie say "I don't get it", it's like "Look, it's not Dr. Zhivago, what's to 'get' is the individual zany gags and one liners".
My wife worked at Fox when Buckaroo came out. She brought me the full size poster andf a Team Banzai button. She also brought home the sequel script for me to read. It was BRILLIANT! A damn shame it never got made…
Not just that "If there was one time in my life..." that's a damn strong statement. Out of everything in his whole life, which a hell of a life, he chose then. I would give anything to have been a part of that production or even to be in the world that saw this movie gain its proper due upon release.
I'd hardly say its recognizable. I've watched Spongebob Squarepants since day 1, and I only realized about 10 years ago that Clancy is the voice of Mr. Eugene Krabs. And I knew about Clancy Brown at LEAST 10 years before Spongebob debuted.
Loved this from the first time a I saw it. It’s a thinking persons movie, YOU have to fill in the gaps yourself. This universe exists and you have to figure out how it works. Love it, and EVERY performance was on point. Wish there could have been a series.
What a wonderful interview. Amazing how Buckaroo Banzai and Highlander got made in the studio system. Clancy Brown acted the heck out of his characters. They won't greenlight projects like these movies anymore. Maybe on Netflix. The coke must have made executives more open to say "yes" back in the day.
Yeyo would be alternated with qualludes/weed to come back down. Name your adult beverage as a nightcap. I'm just speculating here, since my own memory is fuzzy. Saw this back then, but the number of great actors in it who went on to real success is amazing. Still waiting for that sequel..

Take a risk, do something original, and keep the budget manageable. Out of control budgets driving for a billion dollar hit mean too many people are involved and only let you do what worked before. So: remakes and sequels.
@@Joemckenzie-85 Oh, his voice acting is endless and wonderful; always a treat to recognize his voice in something. I was utterly thrilled when they brought his character from "Star Wars: Rebels" into "Ahsoka" just so we could get a little bit more of him.
😂👍🤩 me too my friend, but whatever the amount of times, I'm happy to report it's an absurd number. Since it was released in 1984 there still hasn't been a film even remotely close. Cheers to you
Anybody who has worked for a boss that depended on them, to be the rock (as they say in the video) of steadiness, they *get* the character of Rawhide. And a guy like Clancy Brown, being tall and deep voice and what have you, rarely gets to be the hero role. He's usually the heavy, which is understandable. But Clancy Brown makes Rawhide a guy you *know*, to where Rawhide's death at the end actually affects you as losing a friend. Everyone in the movie is just well-cast, it doesn't work without them.
This movie fell out of the sky in 1984, a banner year for great movies, and no one had ever seen anything quite like it before. It was a work of art that inspired one to create stuff, budget be damned.
Just finished the unfinished Carnival series on HBO, and Clancy Brown was awesome in that show, too. I was afraid of him as a kid, but that's because he's genuinely a great screen presence. Put him in more stuff.
I got a kick out of this video because I actually got to talk to Lewis Smith about "Buckaroo Banzai" years ago while on the set of "Django Unchained." It's always been one of my favorite movies, so it was a trip talking to Lewis about it.
I can't remember right off what year this came, I think '84. I was in Blacksburg, attending Va Tech and working (OMG the movies that came out while I was there!) and I and some friends went to see this thing. After it was over everybody (I mean EVERYBODY) just sat there for a good minute wondering just what the hell we had just seen. Then everybody just stood up and gave this thing a standing O. It's the type of movie you either love or you just go WTF!!?? I would give everything I own to live through another time like the '80s. Edit: My bad, didn't read the blurb; this did come out in '84.
You are awesome, Clancy. I've enjoyed so much of your work. I found it interesting your characters in Shawshank Redemption (Capt Byron Hadley) and The Guardian {Capt William Hadley} are almost the same, but the characters themselves are so diametrically opposite. Buckaroo Banzai is one of my all-time favorite films.
Seeing BB when it came out was a very uneven experience. Even Peter Weller's character wasn't fully formed. But Clancy Brown's Rawhide had this incredible gravity the moment he showed up, a range boss with a genius IQ who was everyone's big brother. His death kept the film from drowning in silliness.
@@chiefscheider Supposedly they justified that by saying he wasn't dead, but in a coma. I think they just wanted to do something cool at the end without worrying about continuity. Or maybe they were all dead and the afterlife looks like the L.A. Reservoir.

Truly one of my all time favorite movies. I have watched it at least 50 times. Probably more than that. I think Jaws is my other one that I have seen that much. They are so good. On my list for desert island movies.
Love this movie. Clancy Brown did a great job as Rawhide. Peter Weller was great as Buckaroo. Read the novelizations of the screenplays for Across the 8th dimension and World crime league by Earl Mac Rauch and all I can say is I'm so glad they didn't adhere to the first or make the second. It's a work of magic that they were able to make such a wonderful movie from such a... screenplay.
