This video was shot by me with SRV's permission and is the second earliest known video of SRV which has been released for public viewing. This video is directly from my original master videotape. SRV was 25 years old at the time.

Don't judge SRV's tone based on this video clip, his amps were LOUD and pretty severely distorted the camera microphone. It sounded great at the gig, the bass and drums were fine.

Remember it well. I was on duty as a lifeguard for this concert. The Crickets, Joan Jett, Joe Ely were there. Met Linda Rondstadt...alot for a 17 year old kid.

Hey John, I added the 'Lol' so U wud kno it was all in fun. I was so excited over that video, I didn't stop to do the math! Can I put a question 2U? I'm certain UR familiar with that huge green turquoise necklace Stevie wore so often. (called a squash blossom) I heard thru comments he was wearing it at his time of death(may he RIP). Also that it was found by brother Jimmy Lee, at the crash site, the next day. Do U kno if there's any truth in that? I haven't yet read the biography, but intend to, soon. Regards John
I knew you were having fun! I remember SRV's squash blossom necklace, Jimmie didn't find the necklace himself but someone found it and brought it to him while he was at the crash site. It is true according to Jimmie Vaughan himself.

It was the morning of Aug. 27 when Stevie Ray Vaughan, 35, died on a foggy hillside near Alpine Valley, Wis. The pilot and three other passengers--including rock booking agent Bobby Brooks--also were killed.
Only hours before the crash, the brothers--two of Texas blues-rock’s most talented and popular guitarists--had joined in a rollicking encore jam with Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy and Robert Cray at the conclusion of a two-day blues-rock festival at Alpine Valley in which Stevie and his band, Double Trouble, had been featured.
Jimmie had flown in to join his brother at the show, the two riding a high as they had recently completed recording “Family Style,” their first album together--something that had been a dream for both throughout Jimmie’s 15-year stint in the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Stevie’s acclaimed ‘80s solo career.
“We’d never done that, not since we were kids at home just sitting in our bedroom with guitars,” Jimmie said of the making of the album.
But after Alpine Valley, in a scene reminiscent of Buddy Holly’s ill-fated last flight in 1959, Stevie was offered and accepted the one remaining seat in the first helicopter taking the performers and crew back to Chicago.
“A lot of times when you’re through with a gig and excited, sometimes it’s good to just get out of there and take a hot bath and relax,” Jimmie said, trying to explain his brother’s haste.
Jimmie’s flight got him back to Chicago in the early morning hours, unaware of the tragedy. It wasn’t until Stevie’s manager woke Jimmie at 6 a.m. that he learned the news. First thinking it was a joke, but soon devastated, Jimmie went to the crash site.
“We were so tore up, as you can imagine. We then went back to the (concert site) that day, calling people and making arrangements backstage--in shock,” he said. “And I kept praying and thinking to myself, you know, ‘Give me a sign or something that he’s OK, or make sense out of this, or something .’
“So we were in the car leaving, and this guy comes running, said ‘Wait! Wait!’ . . . So they come up on a jeep and they had this,” Vaughan said, fingering an ornate silver cross on a heavy chain around his neck.
“They found it, right the minute before we were leaving,” he said. “That’s what Stevie had on. It’s a Coptic cross that he wore. He wore it for years, every day. It was pretty. . . .”
His voice trailed off as he tried to describe the feeling of finding a sign of hope in the middle of his sorrow. And then he smiled.
“It’s just been one thing after another like that since then,” he said.
that guitar didn't know what was about to happen for it in the many next years to come. :-) the guitar had no idea the great music it would make and the immense Joy it would bring to so many millions of people and all of the hundreds of thousands of miles it would circumnavigate the globe. think about it ........

I met him at the Armadillo World Head Quarters in Austin Texas. We were in the beer garden waiting for the venue to open. ZZTop was playing that night. SRV was sitting at a picnic table slamming down on an old Gibson Acoustic guitar. This was before he was nationally famous. He was killing it. He looked exactly as he does here. Same hat and all. The good days!

Plenty of playing and sweat reliced #1 still can see the original sunburst. Sometime in the 1980s it was almost free of all its nitro finish. Man he played the crap out of that #1.. RIP SRV!
Stevie was 25 years-old when this video was shot in May of 1980. In 1983, Vaughan contributed to David Bowie's album, "Let's Dance." Double Trouble's reputation began to build, and a July 1982 appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival brought them to the attention of record producer John H. Hammond. In March 1983, Double Trouble signed with Epic Records. In June of the same year Epic remixed and released Texas Flood. So, basically, SRV was somewhere around 27 when he started to become famous.

I played a gig last night with Jackie Newhouse and we did Voodoo Chile just like he used to do it with Stevie. And he used the same bass as in this video!

no matter how many times i see srv play wether it be old or current footage it still blows my mind at how amazing he was and almost unreal how many riffs he pulls off.in my book he's the best there ever was and ever will be when it comes to the blues.i love all the greats but damn he was a firestorm.

Before youtube, I was only able to see the label released stuff and a couple of bootlegs I was to get my hands hand. To have all these performances uploaded from people all over the world is awesome. They are all treasures, but this one is the crown jewel.

Imagine in 1978, you were an 18 yr old kid who'd been playing at guitar for a few years, Johnny Winter was your current favorite, and you stumbled into a small bar w/4 or so other people in it and this is what was going on for the next 3 and a half hours! I walked in a guy who played a little guitar and walked out a guitar player - it was that impactful! For the next 4 or 5 yrs, I played little parties playing Stevie versions of Freddy King tunes and people thought I was a genius haha - I'd tell em that they had to hear SRV.

This performance always takes my breath away. Seemed like even Stevie was surprised at the notes he was able to pull out of that guitar of his. He was, and still is, simply amazing!!!
Dare I say that might have been because back in these days his set up wasn't fancy. Many people don't realize that in the mid 80s and up to his death he not only experimented with multiple amps he often used many amps on stage. I think here he's captivated maybe by the simplicity yet the monstrous sounds he's pulling out of his guitar and amps.
It's cool seeing his guitar here. It has a little bit less wear and tear. It's badass either way.

I was also at that show and yeah Stevie and the rest of the band was on fire. I saw him every time he came to Lubbock. The shows he did at Fat Dogs were great. I still listen to their music weekly. RIP Stevie!

I remember seeing SRV for the first time on MTV, years ago, covering on the song “Superstition” by the blind dude, “ Stevie Wonder” and SRV WOWED me, thinking,this guy is awesome, wow!! The End.
I'm from Wisconsin I live about an hour away from alpine valley in east troy. When I heard he was coming I couldn't resist the opportunity to see him again. So I was at his last show ever with Eric Clapton buddy guy srv and others maybe robert cray too but I dont remember. I just remember that it was an amazing show and we left the venue feeling great and went into the lot. It was quite foggy as I recall. We hung out for quite awhile when word got out that a helicopter had crashed and that stevie ray Vaughan was likely in the crash I couldn't believe it. Then it was revealed that he was and no one was found alive I cried my ass off I knew then that we had lost one of the best humans and guitarists that had ever lived. I was so pissed at the pilot I didnt know what to think or what happened. It was a very sad night but I was and still am very thankful that I was able to see him play several times to see his final performance. We will never forget SRV.

The first concert I ever went to was at the Philadelphia Spectrum May 1988, Stevie Ray Vaughan was opening for Robert Plant, I got to see Stevie perform Voodoo Child, The whole place went nuts. Robert Plant, didn't even want to come out.
