Guys, I know times are hard, but think about it... this is the music we turn to when we have time to relax after having a few drinks. And we think, "Wow, I wish I was here!" But guys, we were so lucky that this was recorded and it sounds amazing! Just close your eyes with your modern headphones on. It feels like you're here, you know what I mean? Goddamn! All this technology and AI and stuff, but we still come back to this! And it's amazing! I hope you guys are having an incredible time! I love you all! This is what life is about! I love you and I wish we could share this together!
I remember in 1983 nobody in the guitar community cared about the blues. Everybody was into Eddy van Halen and stuff. Then - whoosh! - SRV appeared. The guitar-world changed forever. He tought us to put emotional meaning into every little tone. The El Mocambo version of "Lenny" is a superb example for this. Everybody do yourself a favor: Lean back, listen to this with headphones, put every source of interruption (telephone and stuff) out of reach. Just you and the music. Allow yourself to dive deeply into it and listen to the story, Stevie tells. Maybe you'll see colors or pictures.
The shame of EVH's influence is that he spawned a whole load of soulless copycat shredders when his own playing was remarkably ferocious and full of great blues and feel. I mean it'll never be SRV 'Lenny' or 'Riviera Paradise' level (what is?) but there is some great stuff in there.
Yes! To be honest I'm not too impressed so much with listening to stuff like "eruption" it's not really something you can listen to over and over for hours and feel a sense of beauty....not like SRV's performance here, this is beautiful....I'd rather hear playing like this than playing that is "too acrobatic" - Jeff Beck......

I also get that feeling inside of myself when you listen to Stevie play, really does make the eyes tear up a bit, you can feel it right in the soul i swear
There’s been Endless civilizations, empires.. lifetimes… That’s all been done before, many times over… But there’s only ever been one Stevie, who wrote a song called Lenny, and laid it down just like this right here..

Moataz Mamdouh Crazier things have happened.. its bizarre how in people's own worlds, past their experiences they cannot see.. out there beyond us all are infinite possible lives to be lived..
I love You Tube stories that don’t need backing up! I was there too! Fourteen! Walked uphill the whole way to get there. Took me two weeks. But it was all worth it when Stevie played this sweet lick. I was so close, I got hit with Stevie’s sweat. I bottled it... Still have it to this day. Sometimes I take a sip when I want to feel excellent
the funny thing about Stevie Ray Vaughan, your favorite song is the one you happen to be listening to at the time you think about it. in other words, they are all my favorite.
I still remember the day Stevie died. I was 5 years old . The day after my my birthday. My parents were still partying and everything got somber. It rained and stormed as I saw they were all crying. My aunt said it was Stevie beating his way into heaven....
I had lost my wedding ring and went into work to see if it was there and they had anounced that Eric Clapton had died in a helicopter crash. I got out of my car at work and looked down at a dried mudpuddle and there was my ring. So i went in and told everyone i found it. Then climbed into my car to go home, by time they had figured out it was an Eric Clapton but Stevie Ray Vaughan and I don't think I have ever felt that sad knowing that someone like a star had died before. The song Riviera Paradise had touched my soul like no other song had at any point in my life. If you watch 16 candles they play Lenny in the movie. It's the scene when Sam and farmer Ted are in the autoshop at the school dance.
I cant believe its been 30 years since we lost Stevie...his music can still drive me to tears to this day...we lost so much that night 30 long years ago

We can't forget the work Tommy and especially Chris are putting in. Takes a special level of restraint, skill and teamwork to play with a musician like SRV who can and will change the whole tone of a song with just a single phrase. You can't have your own ego get in the way and start playing something to boast your technical skills and grab the audience's attention away from the main man (SRV in this case).
Agreed! Been watching this video for several years now learning the entire song on guitar. Many times I’ve paused because I was mesmerized by the rhythm section.
Oh dude you're absolutely right. Chris is an amazing drummer. Tommy is an amazing bass player. But they knew what they had to do. It's not about ego. It's about the song and the sound. They knew they were good. They knew they were damn good. But they didn't need to show it off. Until it was time too at least lol

I'm not one to vent online, but I feel that i should pay homage to Mr. Vaughan. Like him, I struggled with addiction and unfortunately I still do to this day. When I am in the darkest depths of my depression, this song seems to have some sort of telekinesis. I'm able to at least sit, listen and gather my thoughts. Stevie's guitar playing transcends the meaning of blues music. It's cathartic, it's therapeutic, it's something powerful. He's no longer with us unfortunately, but he is most definitely not forgotten. Thanks to SRV, decided to use the money I used for drugs to buy myself a guitar. All I can say to Stevie is "Thank You".
Stevie will ALWAYS be MY number 1 guitarist. I was raised old school and my pops used to keep me up all night while he watched documentaries on Stevie. Also, I’m from Dallas and anyone from here knows we take pride in the fact Stevie is from oak cliff.

I’ve got a massive connection to this song. My old man taught me a simple version of it when I was young, and couldn’t play for shit. But whenever I practiced, I played this. One of those songs that I play everytime I pick up the guitar. It’s so beautiful. When I get it right, I’ll play it for my lovely wife. Hopefully I’ll have one by the time I can play it right haha
I understand. I was fortunate enough to see SRV from 10 feet away in a Dallas bar way before he became an official superstar. My husband and I looked at each other in awe and said, "He's gonna be big." What a night!!
I saw him in San Antonio at “la Semana Alegre” a city celebration the year before he died, my God, I witnessed a true legend, a guitar God, my life is that much better for it, rest in peace Stevie😢
Such mastery of the instrument only comes from a phenomenal dedication to practice. And Stevie started at such a young age, too. He makes that stratocaster sing.
Stevie was in a class of his own. Nobody, and I mean nobody could play up to his standards, even much less the heart & soul he put into his music. Watch the documentary with Stevie and Albert King & just look at how amazed Albert is with his style. So sad he had to leave us so sudden and soon. I can only imagine all the other great performances we would have. This is Nov. 2024, Im 58 and to this day believe Stevie was the greatest guitarist to this day!
well it was love hate, read his history, all the drug and booze, did not help. Most of us back then, that partied that hard barely made 30, and he got sober, and still died in a stupid copter crash...insane
i remember my dad telling me a story he almost went to this show with his friends but despite of how much he loves the blues and how much of a SRV fan he was he decided to stay back and do his college homework, his friends told him that Stevie was asleep back stage and it took them forever to wake him up but once he did, without a word he got up grabbed his strat and played a jaw dropping show that night in toronto.
Even if this were the only thing that Stevie ever did in his entire career ;if he only made Lenny and this one performance was played and that was it. he would still be an absolute legend.
Tell me, anybody, have you ever heard such emotion put into a guitar before? This man is a legend! Greatest guitarist of my time! I'm 58 & always come back to listen to this.
Still blows my mind that his primary guitar, ‘Number 1’, which was discovered to have incorrectly overwound pickups from the factory, that gave it its distinctive sound, ended up in his hands. A singularly unique instrument for a singularly unique artist.
The original Lenny stratr also had big knot in the wood which also gave it its distinctive sound. Fender custom shop talked about it in one of their films
@@TheLowestLowI’ll drink to that. I’ve played quite a few strats, but I always felt like there was something off about the one I own. There’s something special about it that I can’t put my finger on.
Strings actually really dont matter for this tone, maybe if you wanna do that thing he does st the end of testify where he plucks the stringand gets the ridiculosly fat sound. But mostly you can get close by turning your pick to play with the other side of it. It completely changes not only the way you play and changes the tone. Even unplugged
The mans soul was bared for all to see, he had a troubled life too. Dabbled in a bit too many drugs and when he quit he turned into a behemoth on the guitar. What I would give to be able to watch someone give this much passion to his instrument while on stage.
I tripped on shrooms for the first time last year in October and I knew I had to sit down and listen to music. While im a frequent weed smoker, the high was so much different. Everything around felt so much bigger than I was. I ended up watching a lot of classic rock in RUclips, but when I got to this video, it just hit me. Idk how else to explain it. Watching this video on shrooms was the best thing I’ve ever done. Some of those close up shots of SRV made it feel like I was sitting in a chair 2 feet in front of him watching him play for. It almsot brings me to tears of joy talking about it. It was like I was discovering guitar playing for the first time again. It was awesome to experience as a human being and a musician, and it really made me wonder if how amazing I felt was how the audience felt in this video. Watching one of the greatest guitarists of all time just plug into his soul and play for you. Seriously. SRV doesn’t plug into an amp. He plugs into his soul.

While it's impossible to label someone as "the best," I don't think there was ever a *better* guitar player than Stevie Ray. He combined amazing technique with such feeling. He could be blistering fast or so very soulful, like on "Lenny." Such a loss.
John Clites Agreed, I believe you can only put guitar players in tiers. SRV, Duane Allman, Clapton, Hendrix, Page, etc. are all in the top tier of guitar players ever. You could make a case that any of those guys are the best ever. Saying who's the best is just a matter of personal preference. SRV was most definitely in the top tier, and a case could be made for the best ever.
🎸🌃 If ever anyone has earned and deserves his place as a true Legend in music history, it is Stevie Ray Vaughan. I hope people keep discovering him for years to come.
I think you'd be hard-pressed to find two live versions of the same SRV song that were more than 95% the same. I kind of pulled that percentage out of my ass, but he always seemed to play it the way he was feeling it in that moment. Some versions were better than others, but all of them were virtuosic. Even before he sobered up, when he was so drunk and stoned he could barely open his eyes because of the stage lights, his guitar playing just flowed.
SRV once said Jimi Hendrix came to him in a dream one night and taught him how to play like the legend once did. Sounds crazy, but I think you would be silly to not believe that’s the god honest truth. No one on earth has played the guitar with more expertise and pure musicianship than Stevie did. We’re all waiting for someday, hopefully soon, to hear that he came to someone in a dream and passed the torch just like Jimi did. Fly on sweet angel SRV Forever

In my opinion one of the most powerful live performance. He is completely decoupled from his body, he is pouring in sweat yet fully in the moment, nothing external can disturb him. I can hear them talking to each other, sometimes arguing, sometimes consuming. Unbelievable.
No not really like that at all, I Guess maybe if you could make up instantly, imagined, completely paved & built roads, going any direction his brain might silently prefer them to be going, simultaneously created on the spot while he appears to be simply observing, or not. So, maybe then, but nah, not really. Not at all really.
I’m just sick I never got to opportunity to see SRV play in person. It was on my bucket list but I grew up poor and by the time I was financially able he had sadly passed. Fly high Guitar king! 👑
He never missed a note, and each one seamlessly flowed into the next. So precise and wild at the same time. Everything he played was a joy to listen to.
I commented yesterday. I said I was unimpressed by vaughan. To be honest I discovered him only very recently. At first it's true he made little impact on me but somehow I had a feeling about him like I didn't want to give up on him so soon. I checked out no less than 3 of his studio albums listening all the way through. I admit now I was wrong. He was a superb player . He had virtuosity with feeling and great charisma in his playing. Love him now. I've been listening to him all day in fact. Glad I didn't give up on him. He's great. ❤

God bless
You're awesome lol
I think we just did brother.. and we can be proud to say so. Keep on spreading that ❤
And here we are.

Nobody has ever played the guitar with as much emotion and expression coming from the instrument as SRV. Nobody!
I totally agree, but watch Gary Moore, it looked almost painful.
In a beautiful way
He makes her sing don't he
For his wife...he's making love to her ❤ Lenora
I suppose when you're that good you can do what you want with your instrument and just express yourself through it
Not true
I do this on a daily basis bud 👍
Kind of hard when you're watching with your phone lol
That same thing happened to some of us older players when we heard, Albert, and Freddie and B>.B way back and then came Clapton and Hendrix. Soooo
This song is for my brother who passed yesterday. He was only 32 years old and loved this guy. This is for you little brother. Give the uncles and cousin a hug and kiss for me. I miss and love you. Always. Cheetah
So
Sorry about your brother
Ah man I'm so sorry to hear that you lost your brother, he clearly had great taste in music and who knows maybe he's chilling with stevie right now, enjoy your life my friend

I like to think SRV and Hendrix are jamming in heaven...could you imagine what that would sound like?

There’s been Endless civilizations, empires.. lifetimes… That’s all been done before, many times over…
But there’s only ever been one Stevie, who wrote a song called Lenny, and laid it down just like this right here..
Seriously, he is probably the the very few if not only musician that sounds waaaay better live than the studio recordings.
Jyst fyi, thats what jazz is all about.

If you think this performance sounds better than the original, you are high or have bad ears, I could hear every time he was flat or missed a note, can never compare to studio version!
Hendrix was the same.

No you weren't. No you didn't. No it wasn't.
Horseshit. Iirc, this was a rather impromptu performance.

It was worth it sir
I love You Tube stories that don’t need backing up! I was there too! Fourteen! Walked uphill the whole way to get there. Took me two weeks. But it was all worth it when Stevie played this sweet lick. I was so close, I got hit with Stevie’s sweat. I bottled it... Still have it to this day. Sometimes I take a sip when I want to feel excellent
the funny thing about Stevie Ray Vaughan, your favorite song is the one you happen to be listening to at the time you think about it.
in other words, they are all my favorite.

I don't think Stevie ever did a bad song
He is so soulful.
Hahaha very well put
I still remember the day Stevie died. I was 5 years old . The day after my my birthday. My parents were still partying and everything got somber. It rained and stormed as I saw they were all crying. My aunt said it was Stevie beating his way into heaven....
❤❤❤❤❤
Hmm

Is anyone else here celebrating his life on this sad day? RIP Stevie. We love you.
I cant believe its been 30 years since we lost Stevie...his music can still drive me to tears to this day...we lost so much that night 30 long years ago

That's a Old Blues Man Move
We can't forget the work Tommy and especially Chris are putting in. Takes a special level of restraint, skill and teamwork to play with a musician like SRV who can and will change the whole tone of a song with just a single phrase. You can't have your own ego get in the way and start playing something to boast your technical skills and grab the audience's attention away from the main man (SRV in this case).
Agreed! Been watching this video for several years now learning the entire song on guitar. Many times I’ve paused because I was mesmerized by the rhythm section.
Verdade, muito bem observado.
Chris and Tommy are the best
Chris really complements Stevie's playing. Tommy too.

Such mastery of the instrument only comes from a phenomenal dedication to practice. And Stevie started at such a young age, too.

Still blows my mind that his primary guitar, ‘Number 1’, which was discovered to have incorrectly overwound pickups from the factory, that gave it its distinctive sound, ended up in his hands. A singularly unique instrument for a singularly unique artist.
Kind of like Peter Green's Les Paul.
@hopebrowning6300tommy Katona I'm 98 percent sure

John Clites Gary Moore ;)
David Gilmour too
Alan holdsworth blows hendrix and srv out of the water but srv is still one of my all time favourites
John Clites Johnny Winter I feel best because style technical and speed and influence and dedication but really him Stevie a tie haha
🎸🌃 If ever anyone has earned and deserves his place as a true Legend in music history, it is Stevie Ray Vaughan. I hope people keep discovering him for years to come.
It’s an emotional thing with Stevie. Doesn’t matter what he plays, it’s emotional.
This guy sounds so good live , it’s incredible.

Big up to the rhythm section following this man to another planet and back. Groove well supplied. Yeeeeeeeeeah brooo.
In my opinion one of the most powerful live performance. He is completely decoupled from his body, he is pouring in sweat yet fully in the moment, nothing external can disturb him. I can hear them talking to each other, sometimes arguing, sometimes consuming. Unbelievable.
This is beyond unbelievable. The way Stevie knows what he can do with a guitar, is like being a truck driver and knowing every back road in the world.
No not really like that at all, I Guess maybe if you could make up instantly, imagined, completely paved & built roads, going any direction his brain might silently prefer them to be going, simultaneously created on the spot while he appears to be simply observing, or not. So, maybe then, but nah, not really. Not at all really.

@RagggedTrouseredPhilanthropist believe it or not I needed time to appreciate hendrix. In my youth my heroes were eddie van halen and Steve vai.
