When this came out, nobody would play an 11:05 song, especially on AM radio. Except for one fellow on KHJ (Los Angeles) named Johnny Midnight. I was recovering from a bicycle accident and restless, so I was awake all hours. First time Johnny put this on I was blown away. Knew to not call station then, as it was his bathroom break, The funniest part was I was maybe the only listener with a telephone? I kept "winning": merch by being the only caller: concert tickets (John Denver and "Jesus Christ Superstar" at the Universal Amphitheater with Ted Neeley), albums, t-shirts. It got to the point of "Hi Johnny" "Hi Michael". Made the pain and restlessness quite tolerable.

"I Heard It Through the Grapevine" is a song written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong for Motown Records in 1966. The first recording of the song to be released was produced by Whitfield for Gladys Knight & the Pips and released as a single in September 1967; it went to number two in the Billboard chart.
The Miracles first recorded the song on August 16, 1966[1] and included their version on their 1968 album, Special Occasion. The Marvin Gaye version was placed on his 1968 album In the Groove, where it gained the attention of radio disc jockeys, and Motown founder Berry Gordy finally agreed to its release as a single in October 1968, when it went to the top of the Billboard Pop Singles chart for seven weeks from December 1968 to January 1969 and became for a time the biggest hit single on the Motown label (Tamla), the song has been recorded by a range of musicians including Creedence Clearwater Revival, who made an eleven-minute interpretation for their 1970 album, Cosmo's Factory.

This man loves great music. And he cares not when it was made or who made it. That is exactly what we need to see in 2020. Someone yesterday mentioned I Put A Spell On You as a worthy CCR followup to this tune. I say Damn Right, it would be! And Mr Video will love it.

Yah, this is a cover by CCR. There’s also an all-girl band from the 80’s, The Slits, that does a great cover of this song.

What a great song and a great review! This song was first recorded by Marvin Gaye. Then by Gladys Knight & the Pips, then by CCR. All three versions we're big hits. Back in the old days if a band liked a song they could re-record it and put it on the radio themselves as well. There are many songs that have different singers or different bands that were all big hits. My number one favorite version of this song is by Marvin Gaye and my second is by CCR.

It was first recorded by "The Miracles"in 1966 then "Gladys Knight and the Pips" in 1967, and Marvin Gaye released his version on the "In the Groove" album in 1968, his version is the one that climbed in the charts and CCR did their cover of.
