- The thought of a 14 hour bus trip across Borneo was horrific, it was the last thing I wanted to do after an already exhausting journey. The only logical thing to do was to take a last minute flight from Kuching, Malaysia to Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. Not only was this an opportunity to add another country to my list, but also a simple way to skip 24 hours of bus/taxi travel towards Kota Kinabalu. The luxury of Royal Brunei Airlines was very affordable!
Luckily, I managed to see the key highlights of Brunei in my short time there. This included Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, Kampong Ayer, the mangroves and a small area of the rainforest. There were plenty of proboscis monkeys to spot and some crocodiles. Also, on the boat tour I could see the Sultan's home. I didn't meet the Sultan on this visit though.
There were plenty of cheap food options for as little as $1 Brunei Dollar, especially at the food markets. Perfect for travellers and backpackers on a budget. Just make sure to read up on the laws of Brunei before setting off on this adventure in Asia.

I think Brunei has a good city layout but unfortunately it's quite quiet there and no one walks so I think it's a little boring.
Most people own a car. Also, the bus is very affordable, so it's easy to understand why nobody really walks. It was nice to walk along empty footpaths 😄👍
