- This time on Edmunds U-Drags, we’ve got two big, powerful and very different luxury cruisers going head-to-head on our course. On one side we’ve got our long-term all-electric Lucid Air Grand Touring, and on the other is the twin-turbo V8-powered BMW M8 Competition Coupe. @Edmunds Cars Nope, didn't expect anything less. Wait until you see what a slightly modded M8 is running in the 1/4 mile. Just Ethanol tune & downpipes and guys are running high 9's in the 1/4 mile, 0-60mph in 2.4
First run full fake turn by lucid he turn long wat and bmw turn close of flag for fast and sec by other again fake now he drive bmw and turn close and same like lucid turn close but little slow lucid drive both car is fast test but on turn in flag someone do long someone do close turn no fair

I’ve never seen a Lucid look so slow before 😮 That M8 off the line is crazy impressive.
It looks like it's on a launchpad. I don't think I have ever seen a street car launch that fast!
As someone who has engaged launch control in the M8 Competition... it's an absolutely unreal experience. It almost feels like it pops a wheelie 😂

Overboost on launch. Even in the M40i cars, it launches hard. Much harder than you’d expect.
Some have tested the M8C doing 0-60 in 2.6 seconds (w/ 1ft rollout, the standard)

Cool comparison but with pirelli p zero all season tires on one car and michelin ps4s on the other the m8 has huge advantage in launch cornering and braking.

@@harry-eto Unfortunately speccing our Lucid with the summer tires & 21-inch wheels would've caused a significant delay in our delivery, so we went with the all-seasons and smaller wheels. But we try to match things up as close as we can! Stay tuned for what we have in the works!
I was in fact wondering how was that possible. Electric cars like Tesla Model S Plaid and Lucid Air GT simply cannot be beaten by any mass produced combustion vehicle, at least till around 70mph...
As always BMW underates their power numbers, and BMW xdrive is perfection off the line. Imagine that twin turbo V8 monster with just a 1000 dollar tune. Bonkers.

@registrationaccount1034 hmmm, I don't think so I don't think 1000 dollar and downpipes will get it to 1000hp, I haven't seen any m8 with that much hp yet, Lucid air has instant torque remember it will still shoot off faster than the m8, the m8 would probably catch it after 165 mph witch is where the lucids top speed limiter is, but I would still take the lucid tho, the m8 still a monster tho so I won't argue
My m8 hits 60 in 2.5 consistently. It’s the second fastest car I’ve owned. I installed the race chips plug in and it runs 10.4@132
Before watching - good match up. This should be close, but im thinking the M8 takes it. Better tires would probably give the lucid the win.
Lucid needs better tires, better wheels, and better brakes...I love the U-Drag race concept but this one really should be redone. The set up on the Lucid was most of the reason for the BMW win -- not the cars per se.
@@Mandolin1944 depends on the limiting factor. If it's just that the tires don't fully allow the brakes to work, then just better tires are all that's needed. If the brakes are already maxed out, then you are correct.
These winter tires have cost the Lucid easily 1 sec. This was not remotely a fair race.
@@harry-eto I agreed it makes it unfair. However, it's the tire lucid offers and the rules stipulate OEM specifications.
So if Lucifer were to offer sport tires, that would allow them to do better.
Too bad lucid is definitely not reading this.

If Lucid doesn't offer them, any tire dealer will happily help for that matter.
4:44 are you actually claiming that the Lucid air is brakes are insufficient to stop the wheels from turning at reasonably high speed? The ABS is unable to be activated? Or do you mean that it would benefit from more and better tire up front?
Just that it doesn't have sporty summer tires or performance brakes, which is especially important for the extra-heavy, extra-powerful Lucid. This means the Lucid can't slow down anywhere near as quickly as an M8 or other sporty cars, and that at the same speed it can't turn as well as the Bimmer or others. ABS isn't an issue, just the sheer force required takes longer and harder to reign in on non-performance rubber.
Testing at extreme limits like on a track exposes that to the nth degree.... but even a very sporty driver would have a hard time bringing a Lucid anywhere near its limits on the road w/o going nuts.
Best test in my opinion. Mixes drags for those who care about straight line speed and turning for those who like twisty roads. Comes to show you how important turning and braking is

Pardon my ignorance but this 1/4 mile U drag race is way more fun to watch, and I am sure a ton more fun to drive compared to the regular 1/4 mile drag race we have come to see plenty. This is the future of the 1/4 mile drag race, want to see others do the same.

Edmunds, I can see you have 19” wheels and therefore all season tires on the Lucid? Why would you do this race without summer performance tires? What kind of tires are in the M8? And do you think it’s a fair assessment not using the proper tires?

Perhaps two tests: one with manufacturer rubber, and one with the same rubber, so we know we're testing the cars and not the tires.

Yeah, the performance would have been a fair comparison because that model, though fast(as most EVs) is not meant for racing, hence the poor tires and breaking performance which is important.

For drag racing and performance, the Lucid would be better off on 21 inch wheels with summer tires, not the all season tires represented in this video.
Yeah, Motor Trend's drag race seems pretty clear that even this Lucid would accelerate much faster than an M8, or even way faster+lighter cars... I can believe that the M8 could easily beat it in turns and braking, but it seems odd that the M3 gets the jump especially off the line by that much when it seems to be the other way around on other tests. It msut be due to the rubber.

The Lucid Tire are the week point
Now, sure, if there's a delay between hitting the gas and actually moving in the Lucid. But in both races, the M8 starts moving before the Lucid 8:53 watch the brake light difference.
My dream car I’ll own them one day. The m8 comp. M850i both of them. That’s the best looking bmw.
I expected the BMW to be much better in breaking but I thought that the extra power and instant torque would compensate. I was wrong!

Love how you both switch cars in all the U Drags. Kurt is the better driver time and time again so its important to get both drivers in both cars so you can get an average time

Love the M8 and would pick that over the Lucid anyway but have to be fair here. The Lucid wasn’t tuned for racing where as the M8 has always been. Change the tires and brakes alone and this is a different race. Also the Lucid is 20% heavier. That extra 1000 pounds is a massive gap to overcome. Still the M8 is a fantastic piece of engineering and good on BMW for keeping it with the combustion engine.

Edmunds, I just want to commend y'all on this U-drag race. Y'all really do a good job. Not only is it free of unnecessary filler like carwow but you also have the drivers switch cars to ensure you get the best time possible.
This U racing concept is great, you should definitely do more, ask people to lend you some cars if necessary this is very interesting!

Problem isn't with breaking but when it comes to corners and drifting BMW belongs to another universe. Due to edge of drifting in M cars it had advantage to return back.

I have zero idea why you guys don't churn out 3 of these a week. It is, by far and away, the best way to show capabilities of these cars and there are tons of different races to see. Hire more people. Buy more air strips. Borrow more cars. MORE MORE MORE!!!!

To be fair, that model of lucid is not meant for racing, it is a fast car, but it's not a race car. Hence the poor tires and breaks on that model, a more fair comparison would have been the performance model.
Get a Nismo GTR in there. I feel like that car would kill in this type of race

@@nerdeater27 the BMW is still impressive because the Lucid has more power even in this version. It is not enough to just install big batteries and a powerful electric engine. A car also needs sublime suspension and brakes. At this price tag the Lucid is disappointing as hell.

All this lucid would have needed to win is the same tires on the M8 not 19” all seasons lol. The midtier 4 door luxury sedan on all season tiny tires is only a half second slower than the all out 2 door M car. Think about that for a moment.

I'd say it was around 90%.
Because you own the Lucid it would be very interesting to see y'all upgrade the brake, wheels and tires on it and then do a re-race episode or 2....
Stock v stock. Not stock v mildly modded.
My 2009 Subaru Forester came with soft springs and shocks, 16 inch wheels and all season tires. It now has a 3 inch drop from coilovers, every aftermarket suspension piece sold for a STi and 18 X 9.5 inch wheels with sticky Falken Azenis RT615K+ tires. I wonder which version of my car would win U Drags?

Tires or not, the way that M8 jumps from the line is insane.
Gotta love them underated german cars. It won in my book just after the sound check. 200hp less and it leaped off the line. Just bonus for me. 10 second car on unpreped road with reg tires on pump premium gas is nuts. Granted most people cant afford either. Thats y I modify my old cars. Average people like to be fast too. Oh did we mention bnw fuels up in 5 minutes?
I spoke to a proud tesla Y owner. He was so impressed that after 2 hour charge on 220v he got 40 miles 🤣🤣🤣. You want to win people over EV. Be cheaper the ICE, charge up in 10min or less. With no oil or maintenance, they will win. Assuming they dont burn down for no reason. EV does not seem like long term winner. Honestly will any of this speed matter once they ticket us to death with all the revenue making speed and red light cams coming out? Prob not.
It would be dope if Edmunds did brake and tire upgrades and did this again. Maybe lucid would make some changes too.

Here’s an idea; if you’re going to put a lucid in a race don’t use the maximum range configuration. Fuel efficiency is the opposite of sportiness. For example their lucid has the least sporty wheels possible.
Given that this is the ultra performance version of the 8 series, why didn't they use the performance version of the Lucid?

BMW traditionally publishes very conservative hp numbers. I wouldn't be surprised if that car dynos closer to 750 or 800 hp. That is a really fast car.
That heavy battery makes it hard and slow to make a quick turnaround.
