    The first Luigi's Mansion was creepy and that's what's missing with these new Luigi's Mansion games, there not creepy like the OG game, there goofy and wacky like the Mario games there based on which would be fine if the first game was like that, but it wasn't therefore these newer games don't feel the same as the original did.

    Dark Moon made me long for the LM1 atmosphere. LM3 made me long for Dark Moon’s atmosphere. I wonder if they will ever find a middle ground. The atmosphere from LM1 + The Variety of Dark Moon + The quality of LM3 = what we want for LM4.

    Well done video, you described everything I really love about this game and why I don’t enjoy its sequels as much. Particularly the sound design and how the atmosphere of the mansion really makes it feel like a real spooky mansion, it’s a masterpiece of less-is-more sound design and it’s my favorite game because of that.

    I love the current style of the series save for a few nitpicks I have. I'd love to see some much heavier lighting in the next game if they make another, because with how bright Dark Moon and 3 can get in places, it can make the flashlight feel pointless. My favorite areas in dark moon are under the Old Clockworks in the tunnel leading up to the tomb, where it's pitch black save for Luigi's flashlight and the fire he uses to burn the spiderwebs, and when King Boo is chasing after Luigi in the illusion dimension during his boss fight when it goes dark. I also really love the laundry room in the beginning of Luigi's Mansion 3. And I do love the bigger rooms in Luigi's Mansion 3, but I would prefer to have some more cramped areas mixed in with those. I am super pleased that Next Level made a point to listen to fan feedback on Dark Moon to make 3 an even better game, and I hope they continue to do so. I want to see more Luigi's Mansion, it's one of my favorite video game series' of all time.

    I got it for 10 bucks and had a lot of fun. This was...2005ish. Even then, the game was stunning. It was really a good showcase on what the cube was capable of. Granted, I know some people knocked it at launch, wishing instead for a Mario game like we had gotten with the NES, SNES and N64. Not to mention it was short. At 50 bucks, I can understand. And the lack of a Nintendo platformer at launch was definitely weird since this was the first time we never got one (Gameboy had Mario and Virtual Boy was the Virtual Boy, so no one even remembers what games were available at launch because so few bothered to buy it.)

    I love the concept of Luigi's Mansion, ever since I first tried it out at a kiosk in K-Mart in 2001. I totally agree that the original is very special and I think you hit the nail on the head; it's the atmosphere. The art direction and design of the mansion and ghosts is so well done. I haven't played Dark Moon but look forward to playing it's remaster on the Switch. But of the Mansion games I've played thus far, the only one I care to go back to is the original. Looking at LM3 and then looking back at LM1, my goodness those mansion rooms are so ornately designed! I think the mood from the music and even the position of the game camera, being closer to Luigi makes a difference too. And the graphics have aged surprisingly well; a common trait for gamecube titles, interesting enough. LM1 is easy to beat and a short game, but I think some game experiences need only be a few hours long. Luigi's Mansion is like this great theme park attraction to immerse myself in. This game is really special to me and I think it's a shame Nintendo hasn't been able to replicate that experience in the other sequels.

    I still think that the first game in the series is the best one, maybe it's nostalgia from watching my brother storm through the mansion and beat bosses I was a bit afraid of with ease, or maybe it's the surprising amount of speedrun techs and jank that is in the game. There are so many reasons to love it, but personally the atmosphere takes the cake! It's just so dark and gloomy and none of the other games in the series fully matched that. I think E. Gadd was handled great in this game, I'll always remember when he invites Luigi back to the lab to have his favorite "Pickled Dandelions." What a charming character. It's short yet so replayable, I play it once every year during October and make sure to get all the money I can each time.

    I'm also hoping pikmin4 is great since there's something similar happening to the franchise, I would recommend talking about it when pikmin 4 releases. Great video btw, I could listen to opinions like this all day
    I think that the second Luigis mansion game definitely loses on some charm of the original but some new gameplay is also awesome, In the first game I love that it's one continuos ride, you only go back to the lab after bosses and immediately get back to exploring, it made me finish the game in 2 days, unlike new moon (that I still really enjoyed but it took me some more time since it was mission based)
    Now I actually remember 2 fondly because of the multiplayer minigame mainly, that was insanely awesome and still is. I think luigis mansion 1 is a relic of games of the past, even the weird luigi render compared to modern renditions is charming. Now there's less risks taken with games, the way a new movie might have less natural sounding dialogue but better effects, like star wars.
    But with Luigis Mansion I think it's okay to simply replay the original and I'm glad sequels even exist now.

  • @MarlopolyGaming
    @MarlopolyGaming 5 месяцев назад +1

    Honeslty for me, I really do think that the reason why the original just SLAPS is because of the music more so than anything. Luigi's Mansion 3 was actually the first one I played, but when I went back I realised how much more atmospheric the original is. Don't get me wrong 3 is visually stunning, beautifully animated and fun to play, but it DOES lack the creep factor.
    Also something that can't really be replicated as well these days is the hardware limitations of the time. Although it sounds counterintuitive, limitations in tools actually forces artists to be more creative to get the idea across to a viewer/player/watcher etc.. And something about that specifically in the video game genre creates a certain uncanny visual style that works very well for creepiness. By making Luigi's Mansion 3 as beautiful as it is, they did lose some of the creepiness, but that is inevitable.

    The main difference with the Luigi 1 compare to the squeals is what kind of horror atmosphere, Dark Moon and 3 are more lighted hearted and campy with the spookiness while 1 and the 3ds remake are more on EERIE and foreboding spookiness. Both are fine but it's definitely not the same but works just as fine.

  • @Christ_Enjoyer
    @Christ_Enjoyer Год назад +2

    Excellent comparison you've drawn with the Borderlands series. I agree whole heartedly that the ambience/setting of the first and the first Luigi's mansion are similar in a way. They take a simple theme and stick to it through out with minor deviations that make thematic sense. The sequels then take that setting and copy/pastes it in different colours, thus losing the cohesiveness and familiarity in favour of novelty. It makes sense why these choices were made but I can't help but prefer the original settings in both of these cases. Perhaps nostalgia, or perhaps an excellent execution.

      It’s a sort of slow and methodical game, you’ve got to pay attention to dialogue if you wanna know what to do. It’s not for everyone since it does almost no hand holding unlike the other Luigi’s Mansion games. But if you can muster up the patience (which I had a hard time doing too) it’s fantastic.

    "you just can't release the same game again"
    Is something I hear people say a lot and I think it's sort of not true. If, for the switch, you took the gc luigi's mansion, redid the graphics, and changed the mansion and characters, I don't think you really need all these new features and gimmicks.
    Luckily, I think the switch version does okay with this, but unfortunately, I feel a lot of the ambience is lost due to the more complex sillier puzzles and the fact that it's not an old abandoned place, but a fully functional hotel. Still a blast of a wonderful game, but not as much a scary abandoned loner on a rainy night vibe. Do we need new tools, gooluigi, and so on? I say no. Also, the game was just generally brighter, which gave it a cool feel, but not a luigi's mansion feel.
    I don't know. I'm okay with a great game not changing too much. Just give us more, with modern graphics.
    Also, dark moon is the only one I had trouble getting through. I kept wanting to just finish it. I got stuck a bunch and always felt stuck in a few rooms rather than a whole big place. Idk. Maybe I'll try it again, but I believe it'll stay my least liked. Controls were very well done considering the was no right stick.
