FINALLY- basic TRUTH from a YT site!!! ha. How refreshing... THAT brings my appreciation and trust level for you guys WAY UP... fast.. No hype- no clickbait bs.. just TRUTH and actual teaching that WORKS.... WONDERFUl!!!!
I know I'm late to the dance, but now I know why I like this channel so much. It's realistic self-defense, and the fact that Azu taught the head instructor about fighting. Not to mention the lovely personalities we have here. I'm starting Aikido again after many years of no martial arts, Shodokan. I think my Sensei has a similar self-defense mindset, along with the Judo self-defense aspects built into Shodokan. That's not to say that one can't do Aikido without self-defense application. But I wish to get most or all of the benefits. Thank you.
Wow. A new level of respect for all you guys. Jason sensei, I want applaud you for the the way that you helped develop Azu so well that I actually thought that he was the senior instructor! The same with Andrei. To me that type of attitude and heart is what's going to help develop Aikido into a style of relevance for decades to come. I hope that I have the honor of training with you guys. Can't wait for "AikidoBro"! It's gonna be outta site!
Nice point, One of the problems I used to see coming up in the early days was teachers that were not training just teaching which means you are teaching from where you were not where you are NOW
Superb, Aikido Flow is Exactly what i was looking for.. Aikido is known as the Friendly Martial Art, But this kicks it to the Top for me. Thank you Three Great Shepherd You Are !
What Ho chaps, please keep posting the videos as I enjoy not only the martial arts aspect but also you guys make me smile. Some of these channels take there selves way to seriously. More power to your elbow.
I want to start by saying thank you for the videos and for even answering the Questions asked of you all I cannot wait to learn more from you all..my old Master once told me "that a Student that stops listening has all ready lost " and I watch your videos a LOT..cannot wait to learn in person even more so..
All of you guys are awesome and have been very inspirational in my own journey. Some people have told me i'm crazy because i made my choice to start training not only because i chose Aikido and not BJJ like 99 percent of people and worst of all, i did so because some guys from England called Aikidoflow. No regrets, one of my goals is to be able to train with you guys one day, i'm from the US. I train under Sensei Dee Seabolt at the Aikido center of Jacksonville, Florida. Love you guys, cheers!
Jason the best thing about you is that your such a humble teacher but still a bad ass. I would love to train with you but would never want to fight you. Cant get enough of Akido flow!
The thing aikido adds to any martial artist are two concepts. Circular movement and blending. The real world effectiveness of a martial art is based on some many variables. The street is not fair ; multiple attackers , weapons from a hammer to a firearm. I am old now and trained for 30 years in a Chinese style and aikido. I boxed as well. Several months ago I used aikido in a real life situation. I was shooting photos by a river of water fowl and I missed some ice on the trail. All my gear was in my hand and my legs flew out from under me and I was headed at about a 30 degree angle backwards with the back of my head headed towards the ground. Because I knew I had get thrown and to land minimizing impact I hit hard but with my chin on my chest and rolled over my shoulder. Bruised but that was all. Aikido training prevented a potential major injury.
I used to train Ki Aikido and our instructor was a surgeon, seeing many injuries from people falling on the ground. He said that we probably will never have to fight in our lives, but when we fall, we won't break our bones. He was so right, because one time hiking in the woods I slipped on slippery stream and fall down the slope. Made few rolls on the rocks and landed on my feet. Girl with me was screaming in fear. I had few bruises and I was ok. Aikido saved me.
Jason, you're goofy foot Me too! As for "Aikidoflow", I love your concept. My journey has only just begun but I can totally relate to how this all evolved, and similar thoughts have been running through my head as I train. Thanks for sharing the backstory.
I skated and I still ride snow (softer landings). And I see you have flow on the board too. Achieving flow on the board or on the mat can be very fulfilling! You have inspired me to go out shopping for a long board.
Thank you for sharing your history. I love it. keep making the videos. If I ever get the opportunity I'd love train with you guys . I'm from Charlottetown P.E.I., Canada.
Nice candid presentation. Thanks Jason! I think my black belt came after about 8 years under the same sensei. My only regret is that I didn´t stick with it back in college and let twenty years go by before picking it up again. Better late than never, I guess!
Question now is when you are going to be opening other Aikidoflow dojos in other cities, particularly here in the U.S.. ? 👍 I would think the trick there would be to get and develop students at the original London dojo and, when ready, move them out to open a new dojo. A few related questions, though .. Is Aikidoflow ready to take its place as a stand-alone style of Aikido that can be systemically learned, w. belt rankings and such? And, if so, before beginning the course of study of Aikidoflow, should the student take traditional Aikido instruction as a prerequisite (possibly stopping at a certain belt level), or can that requirement be eliminated?
Interesting history and good to hear about where it comes from and where it is going: every tradition must grow (else its no longer a tradition just a relic or fossil).
Can you guys please do more videos showing how you fight using aikido like the last full contact sparring video? Also how do you figure out which aikido schools are good to attend for combat defense?
We can't go full on all the time other wise we would not be getting out of bed!!!! With the pain.as for what school, I might do a video on this, before you join any school go around and look at a few and see how you feel about them and their style and the people
Aikidoflow Haha I certainly wouldn't want Azu to get anymore headaches! I guess I was asking more about the full-contact because it bridges the gap between the theory and the action. But I also haven't actually done aikido, which relates to the second question I asked. Also, thanks for responding! I love this channel
I love this channel! So, given the info in this video, does it mean that you do Aikido but sort of tweaked and enhanced to a bit of your own style of Aikido? Thanks.
Hello, guys! The Aikido you teach and practice is Aikikai, the one that comes from Hombu Dojo and directly from O'Sensei Morihei Ueshiba? Thank you in advance.
My answers How long til black belt? I'm in year nine of training, have been leading classes as a student teacher for about three years, (since nikkyu/brown belt) and I'll let you know when I get mine Can Aikido beat other martial arts? Yes, but because Aikido is so far on the defensive (rather than offensive) side, you'll usually require a discrepancy of skill to beat trained martial artists with it. I can tap BJJ guys with Nikkyo in BJJ sparring, even from standing, but I can do that because I have a lot higher overall skill from cross training many arts for many years, around 25 total years of martial arts training now, and I tap BJJ blue belts with Aikido often enough in positional rolling (nikkyo, sankyo and sometimes others)
Do you by chance have a formal training for HOME study-- maybe DVD based or something? (that shows the "extras" you've learned from Azu and Andre-- and others.. ) I like Rogue Warriors-- the combat aikido- but I'm 67 now and can't do a LOT of what is needed.. so I'm going wtih CANE-DO. I can easily handle multiple attackers with my cane and not break a sweat -even now in my weakened conditiion . (I got mashed between 2 trucks in 99 and just NOW getting closer to "normal" - whatever normal is.. ).. I'd like to use a lot of what you have-- but the randomness of YT isn't quite doing it.. Also I'm on SS so not much income.. at least for now.
All martial arts are not created equal. A boxer will likely lose to a jiu-jitsu guy each time. But because they are not equal do not mean boxing is ineffective. Nice video on the origin. Thumbs up
Depends if the boxer knows takedown defence and with that the jiu jitsu would get KO on his feet if he doesn’t know how to strike you see what he means
O.K., now this story makes no sense. It seems apparent from the 200+ videos that Azu was the founder of Aikidoflow, with Andre and the video presenter (I forgot his name - sorry!) his students. ? 🙃 What some of us would really like to know is what rank belts the three principals of Aikidoflow hold in Aikido? There is no mention of that topic in any of the videos or on the website. I would assume at least First Dan.
Tanaka shihan is very much Yoshinkan and was one of the first students of Shioda. As he's got older his style has softened and his aikido, at first glance, now looks the same as the vast majority of shihan from aikikai and Iwama that're the same age. They _all_ /look/ soft, and they even feel soft to train with... right up until you try and get smart with them and then it usually & very suddenly feels like you've just hit a brick wall.
Right from Master Pat Stratford, no one ever talked about our style name so I think you are all pretty much right, but remember we are now in a process of flux change at Aikidoflow so what ever style we stated off with is changing about every 6 months
Well...yes kind of....I think we keep our style soft for 70% of the time in a kind of Aikido form, but then as you know we pressure test it and then it kicks up into a combat form, what you see is how we train in class...oh and we talk over these thing a lot
love ya but you are wrong about the champs. mahmabe..made for it.. anyone can do well at any martial art to an extent, but a long lean tall long limb short torso guy, will show up at the top of the striker pile, and a barrel chested sawed of long torso short limb fellow is in the grappling haul of fame...the happy black man that is a bouncer on this channel said " i got these big giant hands and I love aikido" he is onto my idea here..look at all the other competitions in the olympics, do you see any big strong black wieght lifters? no made for it.they are geared for speed,, like a striker. do you see any tall gymnasts?

Nice point Chris thank you, I always saw my job as a teacher was to give my students the skills to be better than me
I also thought Azu was the senior instructor, until now, LOL
Nice point, One of the problems I used to see coming up in the early days was teachers that were not training just teaching which means you are teaching from where you were not where you are NOW

Aikidoflow Lol.

Jason, you're goofy foot Me too! As for "Aikidoflow", I love your concept. My journey has only just begun but I can totally relate to how this all evolved, and similar thoughts have been running through my head as I train. Thanks for sharing the backstory.
You're the first person to notice that! Glad you liked it
I skated and I still ride snow (softer landings). And I see you have flow on the board too. Achieving flow on the board or on the mat can be very fulfilling! You have inspired me to go out shopping for a long board.

Nice informative video Jason.. Btw was that guy around 3:32 your son.. =-).. 6:10-6:16, 6:46-6:50.. LOL

Sometimes a teacher, always a student
You hit it perfect!

Oss!!
So what style of Aikido are u me myself I studied Tomiki Ryu
They look like Yoshinkan to me, small circles and very direct, like aikido before it was 'Aikido' . 軽い愛と人生
Tanaka shihan is very much Yoshinkan and was one of the first students of Shioda.
As he's got older his style has softened and his aikido, at first glance, now looks the same as the vast majority of shihan from aikikai and Iwama that're the same age. Can you make a video about how to choice a martial school
your style is aikijujitsu then?
Well...yes kind of....I think we keep our style soft for 70% of the time in a kind of Aikido form, but then as you know we pressure test it and then it kicks up into a combat form, what you see is how we train in class...oh and we talk over these thing a lot
Skateboarding is to develop balance or just for fun 😅
I think its both...whats the point in doing anything unless its fun!!
there are no colored belts in aikido as far as I now.
OnLyKnOpPaS that also depends on the school, some dojos even allow students to wear hakama from the first day.
Where do you DJ?
I don't DJ,...I do play, write and record music, but now-a-days only really for these RUclips shows now.
You know if you called it Brazilian Flow Jitsu the people who search aikido just to post negative comments would vanish and the music would still fit.
that's right 100% no matter what budo art you study or practice yourself you can make yourself combat ready on how you train yourself ?
first like first comment
Didn't know that you're the sensei...
Yes but...i learn from them both every day now!
I think we always learn... kohai, senpai... doesn't matter... everyone has something to teach you, even if it is to learn how to teach them well...
Ki society?
love ya but you are wrong about the champs. mahmabe..made for it.. anyone can do well at any martial art to an extent, but a long lean tall long limb short torso guy, will show up at the top of the striker pile, and a barrel chested sawed of long torso short limb fellow is in the grappling haul of fame...the happy black man that is a bouncer on this channel said " i got these big giant hands and I love aikido" he is onto my idea here..look at all the other competitions in the olympics, do you see any big strong black wieght lifters? no made for it.they are geared for speed,, like a striker. do you see any tall gymnasts?
Why not just do videos where you simply commentate and let some students demo the techniques or demo as nage and don't take ukemi anymore?
I feel like this video could have been 3 minutes if you've only talked a bit quicker =P
(Love your style though)
when you said the word like out of context you lost my interest.
like know you've lost credibility
How?
