Brother, you just said something I have been screamin' for YEARS myself... Absolutely LOVE that you took a moment toward the end here to talk about the "principles" of Aikido being expressed through these techniques, and how any technique from any style can still be executed with Aikido principles. You covered a lot of good stuff here. Things that I have even told people many times in public lectures and workshops amongst crowds who knew nothing of Aikido, but it was that little "rant" that got me to subscribe. Good on ya!
Jason you are awesome for pointing these things out. ego is a aikido killer. I'm guilty of it all the time. I some times feel like I can do it all but when my Sensei or shihan comes to town they show me old man tricks. My mind blows and I learn pieces that weren't there.
A useful guide our teacher (here in france :D ) gave us in terms to move the whole body is to join the four points, 2shoulders and 2 crests of pelvis, and never lets the distance between them change all through the movement. Like this the modules of the body join as a single unit.
Brilliant analysis of common mistakes in aikido, sir. As a karate practitioner, I can tell you I've seen pretty the same mistakes made by fellow karateka (and myself, gotta be honest). Especially the first one, looking at hands...and the feet, oh my goodness, I keep telling people you have to keep your eyes up! I tell people, fights might end up in the ground, but they rarely start there, so look up! Because of your eyes aren't up, most likely your guard isn't up either, and you're asking to get licked in the head. Bit I digress. Just wanted to tell you we make many of those mistakes in karate, so it's always good to hear competent martial artists applying honest critical thinking to their craft. Domo Arigato Gozai Mashita!
at 11:20 you touch on the essence of Aikido - to some extent however. The movement as one is essentially the use of Aiki or the principle of ying and yang within the body. The Aiki practioner knows the techniques in Aikido are to develop Aiki or cross body connectivity. Aiki is in walking, opening a door or even turning a cars steering wheel. This is why Aikido is the most misunderstood martial art as people don't get this. I would really like to extend an invitation to your dojo to come train with us at my dojo so we can share this understanding and take from each other our own interpretation of Aiki.
Excellent. Fast could also be restated as once in motion keep moving until the technique is finished (or do not let uke ever get balance back). Love this video.
Aikido is really a soft form of Judo or ju jutsu. i´ve practiced Aikido Yoshinkan for 10 years now i´m doing Judo and i also have a lot of fun. Aikido taught me a lot so i understand Judo . In Judo you want to touch and make a Close contact to throw,in Aikido you don´t want that to happen
I always look where I'm going to throw them. Helps focus my technic just that little bit more from breaking the balance, better posture, to where and how I'm supposed to be standing. It works for me.
Maybe the best way to approach that first technique and the one @ 7:38 is to borrow from a technique in bowling. Yes, I said bowling. Whenever facing a 2-8 spare (or 3-9) where one pin is directly behind the other one, the bowler is told to not focus on knocking down just the front pin, as this often results in a "chop" (i.e. the front pin is taken down but the pin behind it remains standing). The bowler is advised instead to shoot "through" the lead pin (i.e. 2 or 3) at the pin in back (i.e. 8 or 9). That way when the rear pin is taken down the front pin is automatically taken out as well with it. Applying that principal to these two Aikido techniques, maybe the Aikidoka should envison that their attacker is actually standing just behind their real attacker -- aim your focus "through" the real attacker to get to and take that imaginary rear attacker down while executing your technique, and you will certainly eliminate your real foe in the process.
That hard-style "sumi otoshi" looks a bit painful. I think Azu wasn't enjoying it! I suggest to try doing it more softly, and the uke could also try to move with the technique to avoid a hard impact. The technique you are doing looks like kuruma daoshi from aikijujutsu ikkajo, which can be done in a soft style also. Practising nikajo with strong resistance like that is going to be painful or injurious too... someone will surely get hurt. Thanks for the tips though, I agree with everything you said.
You know aikedo flow i am 14 year old and since the age 9 ive been training aikedo with my sensai and students the most mistake i see people doing is were their body should be like in a nikio lock from a sholder catch u need to face the person and your body needs to be looking at him or else its a struggle same with irimi nagi when we do it we dont catch the head when we turn him we turn in a way to make tye person off balance, how? The tisebiki helps then wr go for the head and back with our hands mostly our teckniques of iriminagi is similir to steven seagle and everything is mostly on the techniques ur doing the best way to know them is to experiment on why isnt this working and go to ur sensai and let him explain it to you and brake it down for you if its hard and until u learn it u will be happy trust me.
in korindo aikido thats not a tenchi. that would be some weird variation of a yokamenuchi iriminage. interesting. i would love for you guys to come here to belair md. and check out sensi john goss and see what he has to offer the world of aikido and korindo aikido
Quite agree, never seen a yokomen uchi like that in 30 years training and the shiho nage with arms behind his head means it is so easy for the opponent to pull you down, speed is not the essence in aikido, proper technique is.
Your big mistakes is that you don't keep the right posture (being like a vertical column connecting the earth and the sky) and you use too much force. Try the videos of Endo Seishiro which could help improve your techniques.
Aikidoflow watching him fall in slow motion I can see how Azu had injuries puling up. Let me guess: he has/had pain in the shoulders and hips, right? Looked like he was consistantly beacing his falls on his forearm, which transfers force up the humerus to the shoulder joint. If the back is slightly bridged during the fall then after the shock hits the shoulder, then the lower back collapses and the hips impact the ground. Over time you get injuries that just won't heal. The problem us even worse for a big guy like Azu. The cure is, during ushiro ukemi, ti ensure the arm is straight and forward of the body's sagital plane. That will stop the forearm from hitting the ground until the roll is already in progress thus disipating the force instead of transfering it to the shoylder.
Yes! .. Yes! .. Yes ! .. Good footballers! .. Don't look at the ball, instead they watch the game. Good Combatants! .. Don't look at the hands, legs, feet nor will they focus on the opponents weapons. The eyes are the windows to the soul. ~Confidence will be smashed like glass by arrogant combatants~
Not breaking uke's balance prior to the application of technique. Ineffective distancing, timing and angles. Use of shoulders and arms above activation of core, whole body. Weak or nonexistent atemi. Lack of understanding/training of weapons principles. Overconfidence & inability to take a hit. #respect
Nah bro don’t say that. None of us are mistakes. Just happy accidents and miracles. :) Because you and I and every one else were the first sperm cell to reach that good ol egg cell that creates the fetus aka new human. :)
We do sometimes at training but we want to keep it as real as we can and a Hakama sometimes hides whats going on and we want you to see everything we do, all our movements
Hey dude. I have 7 years of experience in Aikido. I've watched some of your vids & enjoyed some concepts explained; but hey, you do things wrong even when trying to demonstrate the right forms! although the way you perform can be practical but that's not tenchinage; that's not sumi-otoshi & so on. I know somehow to use my aikido in real situations but not like this at all. the main one is that you do not break balance by kuzushi, not extending, not leading, ... . You can't do any impeccable form of nikkyo when you raise your hand up to your face. That tenchinage won't work against a bodybuilder. That Shihonage is not totally correct (I can cancel it). Your inward irimi for tenchinage does not relate to speed, you can't do it because your position is bad. And many many more details are lost here.
mistake #5: spending years of physical training to earn blackbelt, when it takes much less to apply for gun permit. happy independence day belated, yeehawww! hellooo, is anyone in there?
If you're practicing a martial art purely for self-defense, there are probably more efficient ways to go about it. However, people tend to practice martial arts for a bunch of reasons, i.e. physical fitness, camaraderie, stress relief, and, yes, self-defense.
The top mistake in aikido....Is JOINING AIKIDO in the first place. If you wanna be a mass hypnosis grandmaster, become a magician. Much better wages, and magic is probably a much better self defense technique, compared to this flop, fly, and tickle tag martial art lol.
I loved the way you explain the process of getting your techniques to flow. Good video.
Brother, you just said something I have been screamin' for YEARS myself... Absolutely LOVE that you took a moment toward the end here to talk about the "principles" of Aikido being expressed through these techniques, and how any technique from any style can still be executed with Aikido principles.

Excellent Aikido lesson. I keep learning every time I watch these videos! Shalom!
Thanks Jason! Aikidoflow goes way beyond just learning movements - I like the wisdom of the videos.
I keep learning and practicing from your videos, great job Aikido team .
Jason you are awesome for pointing these things out. ego is a aikido killer. I'm guilty of it all the time. I some times feel like I can do it all but when my Sensei or shihan comes to town they show me old man tricks. My mind blows and I learn pieces that weren't there.

Great video Jason as always. Great advice for any martial arts training.
No experience whatsoever in Aikido. I have trained a bit in Daito ryu. I think most of what you've said here is pretty sound. Well done.
Nice video, very informative.i just started aikido fairly recently and am really enjoying your channel.
thanks for saying we are going to have a look at that Jason I love that phrase
Well said on the video, Jason. Thank you! Keep doing what your doing.
Step away from aikido didnt like my sensi but now i am study krav maga and there a lot of aikido techniques in it this video was very helpful to me
I absolutely love your tutorial videos 👍 Really appreciate them!
Very instructive!
Greetings from Paris,France
Excellent. Fast could also be restated as once in motion keep moving until the technique is finished (or do not let uke ever get balance back). Love this video.
Great martial artists

Very halpful! Will keep watching. I really appreciate your videos.
Very good video
First and most important principle of aikido is to move everything out of the way that all there is to it
Aikiarts101 absolutely! I feel the aikidoflow guys struggle with this in some videos

I agree. Nice pointers.
Some great tips there
Two things I'm taking from this: Move as fast as you can and use your whole body. Thanks!
I thought he left I knew he be back
DJ Sticks they taped this episode before he quit
11:40 actually in italy we call it kosa dori (yeah not yokomen as you're doing) dai ikkio, and we do it much different.
Great advice!
I enjoyed the video
thank you, this is very helpful. :)
I'm going to miss Azu.
I wonder if the move at 7:23 is the source of his aches and pains. ;)
Love this video but one question. No Atemi ?
That hard-style "sumi otoshi" looks a bit painful. I think Azu wasn't enjoying it! I suggest to try doing it more softly, and the uke could also try to move with the technique to avoid a hard impact. Good video. Observation: you’re looking down in the last technique.
The struggle never ends. 😉
is this the channel of the guy who appears in the video?, can you upload a video with knife atack and how to fend yourself using aikido?.
Most common mistake in my opinion is to practice standing up. The more you are close to the floor the more efficient you will apply the techniques.
in korindo aikido thats not a tenchi. that would be some weird variation of a yokamenuchi iriminage. interesting. i would love for you guys to come here to belair md. and check out sensi john goss and see what he has to offer the world of aikido and korindo aikido

If the technique doesn't work, try another one? Do you believe in this approach?
Thanks.
How about if your in a wheel chair how you used your sty?
Your big mistakes is that you don't keep the right posture (being like a vertical column connecting the earth and the sky) and you use too much force. Try the videos of Endo Seishiro which could help improve your techniques.
what azu doing here didnt he made a video about quitin aikido cause of the injeries...?
Clickbait ?
We filmed these clips before he left
Oh, so he really left? That's a shame, I really liked him.
Aikidoflow watching him fall in slow motion I can see how Azu had injuries puling up. Let me guess: he has/had pain in the shoulders and hips, right?

Sorry he left. Hope he takes a break and returns.
heeyyy nice to see you again. always first :)
I know it depends on the person who is training
but how long does it take to be an aikido black belt for most people
What style of Aikido do you do, Iwama Ryu or Aikikai.
Yes! .. Yes! .. Yes ! ..
Good footballers! ..
Don't look at the ball, instead they watch the game.

Great vidéo but please the intro song
Hi Jason. I feel you sometimes have something looking like Ron Perlman.
Also you look much better when shaved.
Greetings.

Why dont you guys where hakamas
We do sometimes at training but we want to keep it as real as we can and a Hakama sometimes hides whats going on and we want you to see everything we do, all our movements
Wish I could train with professional people
But in my country there aint aikido professionals
La historia de mi vida.

Sorry then... When I clicked on the video, I could only see one comment. But thanks for warning me!
Your voice and music put me to sleep
Is that good or bad??
O thought that was Elliot Hulse, clickbait!!!

I've been training for 31 years now. Fighting someone is the last thing on my mind. I train because I love it.
