Early histories of aikido have played fast and loose with the facts… so anyone wanting to research the art’s background has to wade through a landmine of questionable information!
But it’s not just that there is a lot of erroneous information out there… There is the major problem of the glaring omissions, and attempts to downplay people and events that have played a significant role in shaping aikido’s evolution. This video explains who has been deleted from aikido history.

It seems , we know these names, because of internet and people like Mr. Pranin and others who have made sure they are not forgotten. After 5 years training Iwama style, I could feel so many people tip toeing around certain differences, I would see when training at seminars or with different schools for tests. It took a lot of time to research why there were these differences afterward. Luckily the info, thanks to many sources is out there. Iwama and pre war Aikidio that branched out are more like Daito Ryu Aikijujitsu. Kihon (basic) is learned with resistance to ensure proper techniques. Weapon training is done with intent to instill counters or else. Randori forces calm thought to perform techniques with resistance for practicality. After basics, you move up to practicing, after quite some time, to ki no nagare( flowing) softer style of Art that O'sensei had himself worked up to after decades of training. Aikikai was starting students off with ki no nagare, that is why you see deer in headlight expression at seminars when you grab with intent and offer resistance. O'Sensei did not like that students were not learning kihon first. I heard the Hombu dojo would call Saito Sensei to come pick him up because he was giving them a hard time in classes. This is not an attempt to say which is better or more martial, but students have a right to know what they are paying to learn and the differences. This will allow you to adjust your raining. If you are ok with health inspired training, like Tai Chi, then great, but if you want practicality, you can use some resistance if that is the only Aikido class in your area. If you want a more martial style of Aikido , then it should be clear what styles you may want to study. I love the ideas of integrity and spirituality in Aikido, keeps your head on straight. It was ten years before I realized that O'Sensei had not turned his back on martial application of Aikido; but that,he did not want its intention to be destruction. This info is out there, you have to find it without being judgmental and understand that intentions may be different for why people take these classes. Here is a great article on resistance training, students should know about:

It seems very disappointing that many involved in the martial art of peace and harmony can be fairly hypocritical and self centered in not honestly recognizing the contribution of others. I really enjoy learning more from your blogs Stanley. Many thanks.

I have to hand it to you Stanley, you have done a miracle on revealing the truth where the history of aikido is concerned!! Even though I've disagreed with you in the past on certain aspects of aikido, but I will say that you have done a fine job on its history and you should be recognised for that...
I'm of the opinion now that the aikikai hombu dojo is just a conveyor belt for a health system based on "aikido".... All those mentioned are the real pioneers of aikido and what's left from Prof Morihei Ueshiba's Aiki Kai is just a shadow of its former glory.... I would say, that as a former Tomiki/Shodokan follower, the aikido I learnt is more in line with aikijujutsu than "aikido". I now practice a jujutsu form based on the Tomiki/Shodokan aikido style with my own slant on it. It includus elements of other martial arts I've practised in my past, which I've found useful to me personally... I will teach all the curriculum of Tomiki aikido which I was taught, for those interested... I use the free full resisting randori methods, but excluding tanto randori as that has now become a pointless exercise with a dildo "tanto" and is far, far removed from reality and a dangerous delusion in my opinion, even though it's considered and explained as "sport"... My concentration is more on the weaponless randori of that school, but adding a lot more atemi plus elements of judo and judo newaza... I still teach the kata's as a learning aid as the principles are still very important from a practical and historical point of view as well... Even Tomiki's aikido is now moving on with Shihan Tetsuro Nariyama's split and schism with Fumiaki Shishida Shihan and the Japan Aikido Association to form his own sport Shodokan Aikido Federation... I think aikido will evolve or devolve in many different ways now... Most are in the main ineffective as a combat martial art now depending on what your views and practices are... I now call my art or practice Habatakukai Martial Arts as its not any particular one... Maybe Stanley with his knowledge of Japanese language could translate that as it was given to me by a former teacher of mine... Maybe he was taking the mickey as I would not have a clue, but I've been told it's quite a nice name...Something like fly and search to find your own way... Maybe someone could enlighten me on that one?....

Maybe because he claim to preserve his true art. Ueshiabe use kiai, weapons and atemi. Also he keeped it as a true martial art. So did Saito.

This can't be true. With the exception of Yoichiro Inoue, every single one of those names is constantly referred to in my dojo, a prominent member of the US Aikido Federation under Yoshimitsu Yamada Sensei.

@@yusufrabie8148 wHat?!!! All people in the video were Morihei Ueshiba`s students. Inoue;20 years as personal assintant and student,Morirhiro Saito;23 years as personal asistant and student ,all of them trained whith O`Sensei.

    • @yusufrabie8148

@@MrSonOze many of them trained under the O-sensei in tokyo and some of them trained in Iwama where the o-sensei live and develop his art of peace. He taught in tokyo few days in the month, he did not have the time to correct the techniques as Saito sensei said. Isoyama sensei said the teach of the o-sensei was 90% about gods(the philosophy perspective of the art of peace) so he did not have time to correct the technique. They tried to mimic him in the ki nagare phase without the basics which is Kataikiko(i think it's spell like that which means hard as diamond) where the uke grab u with 100% of his force in static position not dynamic.
For me, All i want is the technique of the O-Sensei as my basic training for the first 10 years, then i will learn from all masters to prefect my Aikido.
There is no one path for all of us, there is one path for each of us,the only think we share is the spirit of the O-Sensei.

What the Aikikai is doing by trying to erase people in the arts history is too much like historical genocide. They are now, more than anyone, responsible for soiling O'Sensei's life, ethics and legacy... One can but wonder how Ueshiba sensei would have responded to their actions.

Conspiracy theories are an American thing. Unfortunately Stan and some other prominent western aikido historians are pretty vile in their bias against Kisshomaru Ueshiba and the Aikikai.
JUST LIKE YOU, i trained Aikikai and i knew these names. Besides that, i am sure that each organisation emphasis its own people, and doesnt mention too much ppl from other organisations. Tohei ppl will think Tohei is aikido god, the Saito community thinks Saito rocks the best, Yoshinkan has its own story, etc. Its only normal. Only an American can spin a hatefull conspiracy theory about. It is shameful.

I don’t understand This vídeo, I have been practicing for almost 20 years and learned about all of these characters without any concealment I had access to this knowleadge from my Aikikai based teachers. I understand that the idea of preserving aikido identity has many faces, from Aikikai To Iwama to Tomiki to tohei ki society but I am sure there is no effort to eliminate people from aikido history, I think that there is different aspects and a evolution of aikido throughout O’ Sensei life and these people came out at different moments having different snapshots. Aikido is a personal and evolutive art not a right or wrong kind of unique path, but a universal path. We all born with the knowledge and the ability to do it we just need to learn to peel the layers ;) arigato

well said. but i get it. Stan is a Saito student. He adores Saito. And to his mind, Saito is treated unfair by Kisshomaru and the Aikikai. You see, after Osensei died, Saito had the guts to go to Kisshomaru, and "ask" (as in "demand") an official certificate stating that Saito transmits the true aikido of OSensei. (i hope you are aware that many Saito ppl think that Saito style is the original aikido from Osensei, and that Kisshomaru just fumbled his own style of aikido..^_^) Of course Kisshomaru could not give such a certificate.
Same with the Tohei fanboys (much of them in Hawaii...)who still fume that Kisshomaru became second Doshu while it should be Tohei! (never mind that Tohei eventually got bored of aikido and stopped it altogether...)
So, you, me, non Americans, we simply are watching american conspirary theories. nothing new...

Rly? We in our dojo know where we come from. We train Aikido together with Daito-ryu and the sword, because that's how Aikido was created, as a connection between different martial arts.

The Aikikai is mostly a political organization having little to do with Aikido these days it seems.
It is kind'a sad that such a big group feels threatened by so many smaller... the inferiority complex it suffers from only hurts Aikido and the Aikikai itself as it is more and more becoming the 'bad guy'.

Sounds like the Aikikai has turned into, yet again, nothing more than a political organization that is more concerned with political correctness than the truth. No one is now, has ever or will ever will take anything away from O' Sensei or minimalize his status as the founder of Aikido. However it seems now that by intentionally omitting these individuals from the history of Aikido (probably becaue they did something that offended their (the leaders of the Aikikai) delicate sensitivities), they are trying to "protect" O'Sensei while degrading these other pioneers. NO ONE does ANYTHING alone! Even though Bruce Lee was the founder of Jeet June Do, he was taught by Ip (Yip) Man. O'Sensei, as well, had others influence him during his development of Aikido. There is nothing wrong with giving credit where credit is due and this is one of those times and places.

    • @Gieszkanne
      @Gieszkanne 4 года назад +3

"they are trying toprotect" O'Sensei" I think they rather try to protect them self. Their own ideas of what Aikido ist or should be.

I started aikido twenty years ago. a big fan of Stanley since the beginning, buying tapes and later dvd's and books.
but Stanley seems to have become rabid anti Aikikai in a very corrosive and devisive way.
As other ppl here comment, me too, i never was aware that Sokaku Takeda, or Daito Ryu Jujutsu, was censored in anyway. All common aikido household names! I've also seen online photo early aikido photos whith a young Osensei behond him scroll DAITO RYU AIKIJUJUTSU , which later indeed where retouched and Daito Ryu Aiki Jujutsu was removed. Shamefull of course. Stanly has a point that we should learn aikido history from multiple sources, not just aikikai.
but, what is the result of so openly and negatively attack the aikikai? isnt it maybe bc Pranin was a student of Saito sensei, that he "perhaps" also feels his beloved sensei didnt get the Aikikai recognition that he deserved?
Stan oh Stan, you seem to have ended your brilliant work of documenting aikido history, as a Don Quichote, a conspiracy theorist, a hater, not promoting truth but promoting division.
If you feel that Aikikai omits things, well, so what? just publish YOUR correct version WITHOUT attacking others. its the internet, bro, hunderds of clips about Sokaku, Daito Ryu, a "cover up" in this internet age is simply impossible.
Please let stop attacking and hating eachother. Grow tf up, everybody.
