- Kimi Raikkonen is a Formula 1 legend, and could possibly be one of the fastest drivers to ever compete in the sport. Kimi got a Formula 1 drive after just 23 races in junior categories which raised the eyebrows of the FIA but Kimi quickly proved why he had the talent to be an F1 driver. He quickly gained the attention of big teams like McLaren and Ferrari and established himself as one of the best. Battling with the legendary Michael Schumacher, and nearly beating Fernando Alonso to the 2005 world championship, only being held back by some reliability issues. Kimi won the 2007 World Championship with Ferrari, and also had a stint with Lotus where he still seemed to be at the top of his game. Kimi would return to Ferrari and back where it all started at Sauber before retiring at the end of the 2021 season. Prime Kimi Raikkonen was an unbelievable F1 driver, and one that could have had way more than just one world championship. Enjoy!

Here is a stat for you, Kimi has more technical retirements during his time at Mclaren than Lewis has had during his whole career. Add to that Mclaren was for years notorius for its unreliability when Kimi was there, but Lewis retired for the first time due to a technical problem in the last race of 2009. He raced almost three years with almost perfect reliability, while Mclaren was hardly able to produce a car that would last three races while Kimi was there.
@@TheLeewi98 I know. Lewis only car that was more unreliable than others wa 2012 McLaren. This car was the reason why he joined Mercedes.

05 was great but in 03 I feel that that was the best one of kimi's missed opportunities regarding points. 2 pts off Schumacher was unbelievable.

Unfortunately for me I was born in 07 so I didn't really get to see prime kimi in the moment but I have watched races like Suzuka 05 and I think to myself this guy was so unbelievable and only 1 title? It doesn't paint the picture. But I suppose having at least 1 title to your name is better than none. Luckily for me as a fan I got to see kimi in his lotus years and even as a young kid I thought that dude was the bees knees, nothing's changed.

Its also funny, one of the legendary battles between Schumacher and Alonso in Imola, was actually for P2 while Kimi was leading the race by some distance... But the car broke down... again... So it became for P1.

It's funny because Kimi was driving aggressively and making gains and leaving the pair behind, and suddenly his driveshaft failed, supposedly because of his aggressive driving style. Alexander Wurz, who was on the other McLaren-Mercedes car, was then told to drive more gently to avoid this incident happening to him as well. He ended up rounding the podium, finishing third in that race.

@@TheOfficialZhya Kimis style is the least most aggressive of all the fastest drivers that ever entered into F1. Thats why he was consistently fast even on old tyres compared to nearly everyone. When you are racing the fastest cars on earth you are not paid to hold back - if a cars unreliable its unreliable.

It takes a special talent to stand out in those early 2000s years when Schumi was so dominant. But Raikkonen was one of them (along with Alonso and Montoya).
To more recent fans of F1, I really encourage that you go back and see some of Kimi's early wins with McLaren and first stint at Ferrari. He's so much more than the funny/grumpy radio meme guy.
Seb Vettel said in his last Beyond The Grid interview that Kimi was the most naturally talented driver he had come across in his career, and that if there was some discipline that involved switching cars every race, Kimi would lap the field.

No, what we have to acknowledge is that all the training that was done and started when he was a really young boy. We have also to acknowledge that his parents encouraged him to go this way, and made it possible for him to start competing from a very young age on.
This is what a stable family unit is capable of.
Just saying that its all natural talent is disrespectful against the people responsible for the success and what these people did to lead to such a success.
To me, Alonso and Max are also drivers with immense talent and would be impossible to catch if the grid played musical cars.

@@danieldorn9989 natural talent means that his instincts are almost always right, he has a feel for the car and the way it will move, yes you can train these instincts but if they come naturally to you then you have an upper hand.

Fun fact: there were very strong rumors that Ferrari actually paid extra on top of Kimi's contract being broken prematurely, so that he wouldn't return with a rival team for 2010. Christian Horner also admitted that they had a few talks with Kimi in 2009. Imagine the Kimi-Seb duo in 2010, sounds scary.
I don't know about that, but I did hear that the other teams expected to get him at a discount salary, because Ferrari had to pay him for the breach/early termination of contract, and he wouldn't do it (Because why would he? Had nothing to do with them.) and that scuppered the negotiations.
It was a mutually beneficial deal. Rallying is one of the world's most expensive hobbies, and Kimi got Ferrari to pay him an F1 salary for it, and Red Bull to provide a car for him.

I read he was paid 80% of his 2010 (25 million) contract to leave Ferrari. So 20million not to race for Ferrari, I'm guessing this would include not being able to race for another team, atleast for 2010.
Kimi and Seb duo would have absolutely destroyed F1 field. Also that 2010 Seb+Webber crash at Turkey GP wouldn't have happened.

It’s a shame he never won a title at McLaren but Kimi was unreal in ‘03 because of his consistency and ‘05 was phenomenal cos of his raw speed and THAT race in Japan. His eventual title win in 2007 was an overdue title that he truly deserved.

yeah agree. title in 2005 wouldve been better i think cause he was so fast and really derseved that title. I think he wasn't so good in 2007 with bridgestones and made more mistakes but I was really happy in 2007 that he got that title, but imo 2005 title woud've tasted better.
He also was very wanted because he can tune the cars, actually for that very reason he was kept after retiring driving. It is uncommon these days that a driver can tell what's wrong and switch it themselves quickly to be what it should be.
Dude just drinks A Lot like people who are finn's to around my age 😅 Younger people seems to have quite differend drinking culture in here but I have heard stories of friends seeing bubs kept open because Kimi was there. Things like going to a bubs bathroom and dude is just at the toilet with door open speaking to a cellphone while a guard next to the door 😂 Also heard people seeing him falling down and such.
His title in 2007 also involved a spectacular Japan drive... going from 22nd to 3rd in heavy rain (due to Ferrari giving him wrong tyres).
@@JJfani his only mistake was Monaco qualifying, his McLaren rivals made more mistakes, Hamilton spun in Nurburgring and slid to gravel, Alonso crashed in Fuji and got horrible race in Canada.
It took the greatest dynasty in all of Motorsport, one of the most influential engineers in F1 history, an iconic team principle, the arguably greatest driver in F1 history with a very, very good 2nd driver, a brilliant strategy team and the own team fucking up the current so severely they had take the car from the prior year that broke down every 3rd race, just to beat Kimi Räikkönen by 2 points. Then he dragged the entire Ferrari garage as they were kicking and screaming to a WDC in a significantly worse car, and they then proceeded to basically pay him not to drive in F1 (yes, the hiatus wasn't by choice) because they were afraid of him beating them in another car. After the hiatus he scored so many points that his team went bankrupt.

I was Kimi's neighbour when we were kids and we were in same school. He was fast and furious on those days already.
KIMI is the fastest driver I have ever seen. Been watching F1 for around 20 years and I have still to this day have never seen someone who drove like KIMI. The thing with KIMI was he was a very clean driver in battles and had massive balls when it came to overtakes. He has some of the most insane overtakes of all time. Dude still holds lap records to this day. Even Seb said kimi has the most raw talent he has ever seen. I miss KIMI every f1 weekend. Dude was a different breed of driver. Too bad his career was littered with unreliable machines and he really only had a title capable winning car twice in his career and still managed to be in it almost every season for a 10 year period. In my mind KIMI is the best driver I have ever seen regardless of hardware.

Dunno which period he refers to cuz Seb got paired with Kimi when Kimi was past his prime (like Seb since 2020) thus Kimi always lost and never fought for WDC.
My uncle was a Shumi fan and when Kimi was recruited by the Mclaren team, he literally hated the guy because he was a real threat. Imagine a youngster threatening one of the greatest ever.

Greatest driver of all time in his prime. From 03-06 he was phenomenal. Shouldve won 2 titles that spell with mclaren especially in 05

I also recommend reading the book "The Mechanic" by Marc Elvis Priestley. Marc was McLarens No 1 mechanic in the 2000s and worked with the likes of Hamilton and Alonso, but especially Kimi. There are also some funny stories about who Kimi was. I recommend listening to it on Audible, as Marc reads it himself, which gives it an even better touch.

Kimi's own book is also a worth of reading. Full of funny stories, sad stories, emotions and most of all, the utter respect everyone had for him in The sport.
I actually stopped watching this video, went and watched the 2005 Japanese GP in its entirety and then came back and finished this. Kimi is one of the GOATs and there is no doubt about that in my mind. His insane speed right from the start is something very few other drivers have shown and he was consistent in his entire career (within the car he was given). Just incredible.
I've always said this. Prime Kimi Raikkonen was one of the most naturally talented driver ever to race. He's up there with likes of Senna, Gilles villeneuve, Schumacher, Alonso.

@@weedenganjaman4267 Clark is different cuz most drivers were groomed in the sport since they were atleast 4. Jim Clark had no junior record. Only rally comps. Despite that Clark had raw natural talent. The reasons I dont put clark there is because he's in a level that cannot be compared to the others. Everyone else was trained to be in F1. Clark just showed up and wiped the floor. He was a unicorn in my eyes.

Kimi's challenge for the title in 2003 was what brought me into F1. When I first became aware of the sport, Michael was already dominating it, thus it felt too boring to get into.
2005 was heartbreaking and I hated McLaren for letting Kimi down.
I was elated when he finally won the title in 2007 and hoped for more to come, but it never did. I still feel bad that he wasn't able to rack up the championships to represent his true talent, but I was able to witness the career and will always be glad to have been around for The Iceman.
Kimi winning 2007 against the team that let him down on two title bids was very cathartic, but that same victory was what allowed the British to slander Alonso nonstop for 15 years. If Alonso had won, which was guaranteed if the team had supported him, then we would be talking about the Spaniard as the greatest driver ever.

For me it was kinda different, it was actually Alonso who convinced me to switch allegiances from Schumacher whose fan I was since he battled Hakkinen, to Alonso. I had grown tired of supporting a guy who was really in a much better car than anyone else but I also kinda did not want to support a Finn as somehow after Hakkinen I kinda just saw the history repeat... I don't know, I had issues with Finns. But along came Alonso with rather crappy Renault who showed flashes of brilliance and I became a fan right in 2003 or finally in 2004 season and then he won 2 titles and I was happy, and then there was the painful loss when Kimi won... later I somehow lost interest. During the pandemic I somehow became sort of a Leclerc fan due to all the F1 streaming but now it's kinda... I don't follow it much
Pre-2007 and post-2007 Kimi were two different drivers: former was a fearless madman, so incredibly determined to become a champion and when he finally did, it was one of the greatest F1 moments in recent history. After that, he was more relaxed and, as he himself admitted), he drove mostly for fun. But still, his natural talent still held him at the top of F1 world even in those years. Throughout his entire career there was only one season that I can really consider to be a bad one for Kimi and that was 2014. Outside of that, his seasons were at worst passable or at best stellar.
And, of course, his personality was one of the best, because he was always natural. Compare him to Ricciardo, for example. Latter is definitely a funny guy, but his humour feels much less natural when compared to Kimi's and sometimes can come off as forced. With people like Kimi, Fernando, Seb and even Lewis sometimes, you can see that their humour is much more relaxed and comes off as more genuine, which I always liked more than forced court jester personality.
Exactly when all the champions talk like that from a guy, it means everything. Lewis mentioned multiple times that he would always pick Kimi McLaren car on ps2 games . Alonso saying that you can always go for a wheel to wheel fight with Kimi because he is the one that being the fairest but still hard to race against.

You're talking this due to 2008 but every top driver can have bad season, like Alonso in 2004, Hamilton in 2011 and Seb in 2014. Kimi still had great season in 2009 (dogshit Ferrari), 2012, 2013. 2014 was when Kimi's past his prime, like Seb's 2020.
kimi in the past has been an absolute monster. i remember watching the highlights of the 2003 f1 season and 1-year-old me thought 'awww, so close. im sure, he will get his bring break'. but as time went on and when i started delving into f1 history, i learnt that the 2002 McLaren MP4-17 got an updated version - the 2003 MP4-17D (effectively it turned out to be a year old car), the same car kimi would challenge schumi for the title, and i just went 'holy crap, t-t-t-thats impossible!!! how in the world could you do that? no one in their right mind would dare fight for a title!' but kimi did.

The phrase ‘Simply the best’ applies to Kimi and Max perfectly. Simple people, simple reason for racing. They just love it. And they’re the best at it.
As much as I like Kimi he really isn‘t even close to someone like Max in terms of raw talent and ability and certainly not in in terms of his mentality. Kimi was insane during his best years, especially at McLaren but I honestly don‘t think he ever was the best driver on the grid for a single season in his career( the only arguable one for me would be 05 but I still would rate Alonso higher than him in 05). He also got destroyed quite badly by Alonso and Vettel. I honestly think he might be one of the most overrated drivers ever (he still was amazing at his best, don‘t get me wrong).

@@lachdv6694 Peak Kimi is probably close to peak Hamilton (since I really don‘t think that Hamilton is or ever was as good as Schumi/Senna) but definitely not Schumi. Michael at his best and in his prime was untouchable and remains the best driver I‘ve ever seen. As I said Kimi at his best was amazing but I truly feel like he never had the mentality to be at the top for long. He simply didn’t care enough imo and fell off quite hard after 07 and never really recovered even though he had some good seasons like in 2012/13 at Lotus. A lof of people put him in the top 10 all time drivers but I always find that hard to agree on because of his career after 07. I honestly wouldn‘t even put him near the top 10. That‘s why I always feel like people overrate him a lot (probably because of his character and don‘t give a fuck attitude that almost everybody loves).
@@Reaz399 kimi in terms of natural talent had more than max because kimi barely raced and was decent in karting. kimi imo had one of the greatest individual season in 2003 taking a car that was one year old to the championship against a superior willaims and ferrari. martin brundle even publicly noted that kimi had the speed of senna. kimi in 2005 deserved that championship with his reliability problems. martin said kimi was the most polished driver on the gird in 2005. but i’ll say this, after the tire war and bridgestone was the supplier it hurt his performance because the tires didn’t have good front grip. because kimi loved a car with a strong front end. but anyways i think after he won the championship and accomplished his dream he was just doing the sport for fun even though he was still very competitive. he came in rally and did okay for a driver who’s not familiar with rally driving that much. and in his second ferrari stint the car was built around alonso because he was there longer. and in 2008 michael schumacher publicly apologized to kimi for getting his car completely wrong. which explains why his 2008 season wasn’t so great
@@kimiraikkonen949 I have to heavily disagree my friend. Max might be the most naturally gifted driver we‘ve ever seen in F1. He definitely is the only driver since Senna/Schumi left that comes close to their talent level and ability. The guy crushed and dominated everybody in karting including all the young great drivers that are in F1 now including Russel, Leclerc, Albon, Gasly, Ocon etc. and is the youngest european and youngest karting world champ ever. Not to start about his rise into F1 after just 1 F3 season. Max is a freak of nature. As good and naturally talented as Kimi was he doesn‘t hold a candle to someone like Max, that‘s the harsh truth.

What always amazes me about Kimi was his control over himself and his car. You never saw him make a misstake because he got nervous or something. He also barely ever crashed. Either his car broke or he went three cars into a turn where only two fit.

Kimi is real. It's that simple. He's not attention seeking or trying to get everyone to love him, he is just extremely good at what he does and that's all he's bothered about. He would happily never appear on camera or do an interview if he wasn't obligated. People can appreciate and respect that and they love him for it. Which is ironic when you think about it.
Among Kimi's achievements, he tied Michael Schumacher's record of most fastest laps in one season (10). Twice, in 2005 and 2008.

He was super fast...in the V10 era....winning against Alonso, Montoya, & Schumi I think that says all you need to know about how good Kimi is.
Kimi, for me, is still as equal as Schumacher and Alonso during the 2000s. All had different styles and mentality that dragged cars crying to their absolute limit. Raikkonen's natural raw talent is just unbelievable, that Sauber test proves it all in a nutshell.
He is the reason why I started watching F1.

2005 japan was the first race my dad and 3 year old me saw, later on he got me a diecast of kimi’s 2003 car which i grew up playing with it and i still have it. Mclaren kimi will always mübe my favourite driver

Even outside his prime, he adapted to that type of media personality aswell, where like man didn't know even english when he started :D so he played his cards very well. His ambitions was that world drivers championship, and he got the constructors aswell.
It's just easier to be that team player, just look at bottas :D But he was competitive in that ferrari aswell, always. Having had kids, he gave the opportunity to his youngers. A true lad. Robin for wdc ;)
Felipe was faster than Kimi in 2008, because the team has decided (badly imo) to develop the car midseason to suit Massa's driving style instead of Kimi's. There's no such thing as championship hangover man, definitely not for a guy as commited as Kimi, I hope you'll do more research on topics like these in the future, cheers!
I think Ferrari and Kimi would have won couple more championships, but Ferrari bet on wrong drivers, first Massa them Vettel.
thanks for bringing this up! Kimi has a very specific driving style, quite the opposite of Massa if I remember correctly. Massa is very good, and hands down he was faster than Kimi in 2008. One can still wonder what could have been... at the same time that this haunts me, it seems silly that Ferrari would intentionally go against their own driver, who happens to be the current WDC? I feel a conspiracy coming on, was the link to Alonso and the big bucks from Santander already known at that time? F1 is known for the long game, Kimi himself signed with Ferrari way back in 2005 so who knows
@@Mazname I think atleast partly it was just business. Kimi comes from small market and Vettel/Massa from big market. And after all Ferrari wants sell their cars, so If Vettel/Massa wins championship it probably sell more Ferraris than If Kimi wins.

For me the driver with the greatest prime of all time. If I judge a driver for just how good they can be and not for how long they're motivated enough to hold onto it, Kimi od the greatest of all time.
One of the best drivers ever! Many times he was very unlucky. In my opinion, if they had kept traction control in the regulations, he would’ve also won the 2008 title
To be fair, Kimi's style is very relatable. I may not know the man on a first name basis, but I am pretty sure he will speak his mind and whatever he chooses to say will be as he sees it.

He was an absolute animal, and in 03 only lost due to a single unforced error (by his own admission) and was let down in 05 by a car that was truly blisteringly fast but just a little too fragile.
@@JG54206 Well, you can see it that way. But you could also say that he lost the title because his car blew up at Nürburgring or because Schumacher got pushed back into the race and finished 5th only because of the marshalls. Which is now forbidden, btw.

Monaco 2005 is (imho) the best lap in F1 history. Along with Senna's 1988 pole lap. Ron Dennis said that Kimi was the fastest guy he had ever seen (and this guy had Senna, Hakkinen, Prost and Lauda in his team). He never had the commitment of Schumacher and Senna and wanted to have a life outside of F1. But in 2003-2005 Kimi was easily the fastest guy on earth.
I feel like Kimi doesn’t get the credit he deserves. Most see him as just the guy who says few but funny words and Ferraris last champion. But in reality in his prime he was one of the fastest drivers arguably of all time. One only knows if he always had the equipment to dominate.

Kimi on entry to the first turn into the corner can only be seen standing still and even then you still wouldn’t believe what just happened. It was almost like he would slingshot the rear into the corner before he even turned the steering wheel. Just unreal and spectacular to watch.
Kubica was the only other driver that came close to being as exciting to watch through there.
I'm an old Nascar (The old version of the sport I'm not that old yet) fan and this man is easily one of my top 10 favorite drivers in Motorsports. Just an absolute joy to watch.
Newer to F1, but absolutely love Kimi. The bits he did with Seb at Ferrari are truly funny and show off his personality and their friendship so well. Along with their skills - where one is shifting and the other driving?!

I had a short chance to meet Kimi back in the days and always huge respect for the Ice Man
Being a McLaren fan back then was painful. Kimi was brilliant but the car kept breaking down and then leaving to win the title in his first year for Ferrari whilst McLaren threw away the title with Hamilton
2004 was horrendous, 2005 was so unlucky. Imola 2005 summed up that season.
Don't forget the man finished second in Bahrain in 2013 then disappeared for 16 days on a massive bender then comes back for Spain and finishes second again! The man's a machine

0:30 To me, Kimi's on camera persona reflected his "human element" perfectly. He was there to drive fast, and all the rest, the cameras and all that - that was just a sideshow. He just wasn't the sorta guy to pretend that it wasn't.
