Thank you reacting to this one Becka & Vinny . As other people mentioned here, this is a true story. The Carandiru Massacre happened at October 2nd 1992, that's why Mano Brown, starts the song on Oct 1st, 92 narrating what were the conditions that led to that massacre to happen... tl;dr: there was an internal riot, and the govenator saw that as an opportunity to send over cops to reduce the number of inmates in the prison (with the excuse of self-defense). What most upset me, is that still today (2023) the cops that killed the 111 unarmed prisoners, faced no consequences, and most of them were condecorated by the number of inmates they killed. Love, Ed 💚💛
I'm going to say something without fear of making mistakes, if Portuguese were a World language, Racionais Mc's would be the greatest of all time! just watch more of their music, and you'll understand what I'm talking about.
Just one detail: When Mano Brown said he can't let someone make his mom cry, he was talking about getting killed. He needs to protect himself as an inmate, so that his mom doesn't cry from grief.
Whenever I read translated bars, it seems like translators miss the mark on word choice. In the opening of Capitulo 4 Versiculo 3, Periferia is more like favela/ghetto. But that's just my brain working. Trying to think of how I might translate each verse and add a couple bars in the process. Rather than Google translate.
"A vida é desafio" - Racionais Mc's. " Apenas façam isso, vocês não vão se arrepender, vai gerar muitas visualizações, e ainda vai gerar conteúdo, pq a letra é forte!
The song delves into the harrowing events of the Carandiru Massacre. It was a brutal and shocking episode that unfolded at the Casa de Detenção de São Paulo, known as Carandiru. During a police intervention to quell a rebellion, things spiraled completely out of control. What followed was a true bloodbath, resulting in the death of 111 inmates. The chaotic environment and inhumane conditions of the prison only magnified the tragedy, shedding light on serious issues within the Brazilian prison system and leaving lasting scars on the collective memory of the country.
Street 10 was a hall in Carandiru prison where people resolved their differences. Rapists were brutally murdered, enemies fought with knives, crime debts were paid with life in this street 10.
You gotta do more Racionaid reactions. Please try on Um Homem na Estrada(A man on the road). It tells a story of a former inmate trying to reconstruct his life. It's a poem with a perfect storytelling, very easy for a foreign to understand.
When he say” Fleury when out for lunch” he is talking about this guy: Sérgio Fleury (1933-1979) was a Brazilian police officer who served as chief of the Department of Political and Social Order in São Paulo, during the Military dictatorship in Brazil. Fleury was known for his violent temper & was accused of torture and murder. He died before his trial in 1979. After the Dictatorship ended Fleury’s son ( Luiz Antônio Fleury filho) was elected in late 80’s as SaoPaulo state Governor, and during he’s time as governor the São Paulo penitentiary had a massacre killing indiscriminate more than 100 inmate. Father and son 🤷🏻, both mass killers , true story!!!
Hi I'm from São Paulo, the city where the history told in this song took place. I was just a kid at that time. The police entered the prison and killed 111 people and instead of being arrested received medals of honor. Some say they laughed while pulling the trigger that day. This song was written by a man who were an inmate at that time. Racionais' members were friends of some of the inmates and come to know about this lyrics. So they talked to the writer and asked permission to turn it into a song. I suggest anyone listening to this song to research about this sad and very dark day. One of the most shameful day in the Brazilian history.
Racionais mcs é patrimonio da humanidade, lembro de quando era moleque tinha que ouvir escondido dos meus pais e hoje ver a proporção internacional me enche de orgulho
Here in Brazil the expression “prevent that bastard from making my mother cry (evitar que o safado faça minha mãe chorar)” means that he wants to prevent someone from killing him, so he kills first. If he dies his mother cries. If the other guy dies then his mother cries.
Racionais is a rap reference in Brazil. Other references can also help to better understand Brazilian favela life. FAVELA VIVE I, II, III, IV and V are several rappers who tell the reality of the favela. MV Bill also brings his reality lived on the hill singing SOLDADO DO MORRO and SOLDADO QUE FICA. There are many references but these more Rational ones will start to make more sense.❤
In 1992, the São Paulo Detention House or “Carandiru”, as it was popularly known; It was the scene of one of the biggest massacres in the country. Officially, massacre records indicate 3,500 shots were fired, which killed 111 inmates and injured 110 others. **Fleury - Luiz Antônio Fleury Filho was the governor of São Paulo when the massacre took place. A few years later in an interview he admitted that there had been a massacre. His statement was countered by operation colonel Ubiratan Guimarães who said he was not there to see it and that there was no massacre. Colonel Ubiratan initially went to a popular jury and was sentenced to 632 years in prison. His defense, however, appealed the sentence and it was reversed, being annulled by the São Paulo Court of Justice in 2006. Of the more than 300 police officers who entered the prison, only 74 were convicted. However, none have been arrested to date. May October 2, 1992 never be forgotten ✊🏻
It would be interesting for you to react to the songs of the group "Facção Central"songs like "eu não pedi pra nascer" or "desculpa mãe"This group's songs are very heavy.
Do more Racionais react and if you can add an option to translate what you say into Portuguese. Because you seem to be capturing everything from the songs and as I don't know how to speak English, I would really like to know what you guys say. I bet a lot of Brazilians want that too. All the success in the world and hello from Brazil. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I didn't read all comments but I'm telling more about this video. It's a reference about an police action that really happened where was an police massacre on that prison...hundred eleven deaths. I was a kid but I still remember like was today. Terrible.
He says he doesnt want to somebody make his cry because if he doesnt stay alive, playing the right rules to be friendly in this enviroument, and at the same time, not to be naivy, to get killed.
