      Hi Danni, I was just gifted a large phalaenopsis with multiple flowers and leaves. Im a beginner, and I already ordered a ventilated 8" tarecota clay pot, and I wonder if I can get away with it. I ordered bark for the medium and some fertilizer. Also, my city water may have chlorine, so can I use distilled water?

    Hi Danny, I am getting so confused about your pot recommendations! A while ago you mentioned that dual core pot were great but not for everyday use, as the inner mesh ends up being an issue when the roots grown through them. You even mentioned that those pots were for short term use and specific cases. Now, you recommend them for every day use. You also recommended a home-made self-watering system w/ Leca and inner plastic pots that did come close to the edges of the outer pot, but now mention that there could be a problem w/ pH due to leca in an other video, and issues w/ the lack of aeration in this video... I know we all learn as we go, but could you maybe do an update on those home made self watering pots and your final thoughts on them, bc i converted most of my phals (about 20) to that system and for now it actually is working beautifully, but I am curious (and afraid!) to know if you now no longer recommend that system bc you maybe had some longer term issues? I looked but cannot find an update... if you do have one I apologize and would greatly appreciate a link...

    I’m am LOVING your orchid videos, I wish I had found you last Summer. I have been caring for my father’s orchids for the last six months with no improvements so far. After watching you I realized they are all double potted in outer ceramic pots and the inner pots are plastic with only drain holes in the bottom. I will be repotting them all soon using your recommendations. I can’t wait for them to thrive. Thank you for sharing your expertise!!!

      @@MissOrchidGirl. Danny, thank you for this series. It has confirmed my limited experience with Phil’s and given me confidence to proceed.
      My concern is I will need to repot my phal from a ceramic pot which is glazed on the outside but not glazed on the inside. I understand that soaking the roots before repotting will soften them. My experience is the roots will grip the unglazed ceramic tightly. If I soak the orchid in its pot for an hour or so, do you think its roots will let go of the pot? I am fairly certain I will be damaging some roots as they are entwined in the holes of the pot, and being ceramic I cannot cut the roots free. Do you have experience with this or have any suggestions? Thank you, Leah

    So... I think I’ve messed up in a big way. I’ve gotten so much information that I have mixed up too many things at once! So I’ve repotted many of my plants but in review I’ve gotten the new pot size too big. Also, I got some new young or seedling plants that came setup in Leca, self-watering systems. I’m trying to get used to “watching grass grow” and keep from handling these plants too much in case they are trying to develop a root system. For the young or more mature plants that are in pots too big will it hurt to repot them again into smaller containers? Thank you so much for your help. And just so you know what a beginner I am ... I had a variegated, mottle leafed plant that had a weird looking hairy stem coming out of it. Without knowing what it was I cut the stem right off! And you guessed it! Needless to say, my paph didn’t bloom but it does have the 3rd new growth. So hopefully she will learn to flower and I will will learn to let her!😀. You’re amazing. Ty for the help already

    Hi Danny
    I’m working my way through all your videos.
    I’m sure I need more moisture retention in my media. I’ve only used a bark mixture. My question is how often can I get by with repotting. I repot every time I get a new orchid and I also repotted every thing I had in good pots. But can I do it again now to add moss?

  • @GL1FE
    @GL1FE 5 лет назад +1

    I find in my temperate climate that you will get too much infection from not enough aeration using a decorative pot ; especially for oncidiums make sure you expose your rhizome and prop the orchid to be adjacent to the rim of the decorative pot. The air stays very stagnant if you don't allow the plant to sit high up in the plastic pot. So make sure you have a fan to move the air if you have orchids in decorative pots.

  • @littleminna
    @littleminna 5 лет назад +2

    Thank you, you just answered my question regarding repotting an unhealthy Phal with not so many roots, I was wondering what size of pot to use. But now does the same principle count for an unhealthy Oncidium with not so many roots? Can I still have it in the same size pot? I just feel that the pot is then big and thus indeed the medium retains too much water.

    Hi Dany,
    I was wondering, in your videos you speak a lot about LECA, fir bark, sphagnum moss, ceramic media, coconut fiber, etc... but have you ever heard of or used Tree Fern Fiber? I have been using this media for my Paphs and have noticed a huge difference in growth. I am currently switching all my moisture-loving orchids to a media mixture containing Tree Fern Fiber.

    It's hard to find orchid pots where I live in Canada and buying from the USA is just too expensive so I've just been putting in extra holes in the sides, I think my mistake is I have been putting those pots into decorative pots that were to snug fitting so there wasn't enough air flow. I alway learn something new from your videos

      If you're near the GTA in Ontario, I found some orchid pots for ok prices at Terra Greenhouses. Some of them even have air cones. I'm a fellow Canadian who's pretty new to orchid keeping, and I've been having a heck of a time trying to find sphagnum moss around here, and like you said shipping to Canada is way too expensive.

      @@HylianShieldmaiden I'm on Vancouver Island can't get any farther west than that. We have a orchid nursery just a mile away so I have no trouble getting sphagnum moss and good bark chips but no pots. My favourite pots are like the glazed one that Dannie showed today but the ones they are bringing in now are so inferiour to the first ones I got I won't buy them. I've had Phals for about six year and just started to branch out a little, I have 2 Onchidiums and 2 Paphiopedilum. The spelling on those could be way off.

    I have a phal that I got 6 yrs ago on mother's day, it was a super market buy. It was already in bloom. A few months after I got it the flowers and spikes died off. I kept it in the same pot it came in. A month ago I repotted it cause it was so heavy with beautiful green shiny leaves and crazy aerial roots. It hasn't bloomed again since I've had it. Could this be because it was never repotted until recently? Will it ever bloom again?

    I am new to Phalaenopsis Orchids and I've done a mistake : I've repot them fairly badly and burried all of the aerial roots. I've tried to repot my Orchids once again for fixing my mistake but I don't know, they don't look right and the aerial roots are quite damaged. Do you have any recommandation on what I sould do? I was thinking maybe growing them in water for a little bit.

    • @daec4488
      @daec4488 5 лет назад

      Eliel89s semi-water culture can work if you are in the right environment. Since water stays colder than the air around it if you are in a cooler climate it can damage the roots. Phalenopsis orchids, in my experience, are more durable than you would think. They can recover fairly easily. I have most of my phals in bark mix + plastic pot (bottom holes/aeration cone) + decorative pot. I water (soak for 5-15 minutes) once a week. I am in Michigan so my climate isn’t as humid as others. In winter I soak a shorter period of time since it’s shorter days so they need less water.
      I do have a few plants in sphagnum moss with a TON of holes melted into the side to help with aeration and drying of the media. I water these less frequently (10-14 days) since it’s a more water retentive media.
      Hope this helps a little.
