    Three years ago I was in a local big box store. They had an almost full pallet of canning jars that had just gone on clearance. I asked to speak with the manager of that department. I asked him “how much if I buy them all right now?” He sold the jars to me for half off of the clearance price! I bought everything he had. My husband thought I was nuts until this year. I’m still working on those jars.

    I just returned about a week ago from a trip to Washington State to see my brother before he passed away. Still trying to get my head wrapped around the idea that my brother is gone. I haven't really cared about anything since his passing. Don't care about restoring my jeep, don't care about prepping, every aspect of prepping....I didn't even care about watching any prepping videos. Just difficult to care about anything! I'm watching your video now simply out of boredom, sorry. But this video has motivated me to get back into life, to begin to care again. Care about my jeep, care about prepping, every aspect of prepping. Thank you AP, you truly are a blessing!!

      @@deelilgarden8492 I have the exact regimen as you for prepping. This Covid/Election frenzy hit me hard and fast. I never canned before, and my gardens were filled with perennial Flowers! No food! That all changed in April this year when a raised bed and two separate gardens suddenly grew food this summer and fall. I just picked my last tomatoes and peppers this week! I canned plenty garden tomatoes and butternut squash. I saved seeds this year just as I would also save my flower seeds each year.
      I only regret, not foreseeing Covid 19, ripping out my raspberries that were crazy wild to make room for my raised bed. I can get another raspberry plant if need be... But by August 2020, I was learning how to waterbath can, was stocking up on jars and other canning supplies, and ALSO going to Detroit Eastern Market on Saturday and bought many things in season my small garden didn't include. I'd bring it home and can it! When I got a Pressure canner, I watched videos and canned bargain buys and from the freezer.
      I've developed a desire to continue meal planning thru preservation, as almost None of us have seen the times like we are seeing now.

      Good plan! For a long term situation you can extend this by treating your washcloths in the same way diapers were done in the past. Before disposables came on the market, cloth diapers were rinsed, washed and re-used countless times. With today's prices of t-paper & wipes, more economical over the long run. Plus, think about how much space is saved with a basket of re-usable "family cloths" when compared space needed for the paper alternatives.
      BTW, if you do this, you do not need the fancy "diaper pail" solutions offered today for both disposable and cloth diapers. Growing up, (oldest of 5) my mother used a simple bucket with a lid. Same principle if you decide to use family cloths for long term empty store shelves.

      While I stock up items like toilet paper for specific types of outcomes ( you never know ), I have also chosen to utilise both toilet attached and portable bidet devices along with suitable cloth based drying application and since cloth wipes are being utilised to pat dry not wipe, they are easy to wash and reuse.

    Rudy you've done an amazing job prepping. I see you have the band's on your jars. I have found out that the problem with storing my canned jars with the rings on can cause big problems. Keeping the lids on, however I notice you do not have your screwed down, but keeping the rings on your canned jars is this. If your seal fails and you have the rings tight then the jar can reseal itself and you won't know. So, all those new canners please do not store your jars with the lids on tight. And after your jars have sat for 12-24 hours, you want to remove your lids, wash your jars, dry them. Then wash your rings. If you are going to store your jars with loose rings like AP, make sure they are completely dry or it could cause rust. God bless our canners!

    Storage Shelves: That's a good idea to go back in and add shelves on a DIY setup. Every inch of shelf space counts! I've got a small closet that can use that TLC.
    For purchased shelving units, buy an extra unit to get spare shelves. Put those shelves into the remaining of the units. *More shelving in the same footprint.* In my case, I bought 3 units from Walmart which gives me 9' of storage along a wall. Bought a 4th one which increased the shelves from 15 to 20 along that same 9'. Spaced all the shelves to match what I wanted on the shelves. In some cases, only enough room between shelves to store pint jars. Another shelf has space for 1/2 gallon jars. One spot can handle 3 5-gal buckets.
    It was well worth the expense of buying that 4th unit. Plus, I kept the leftover upright posts & hardware. If, at some point I need to change this configuration, have everything needed to go back to 4 units instead.
    Thanks for sharing!

Another downside is that t-paper is often used before and/or something is used afterwards to dry. Plus, women face an increased risk of UTI, when feces don't go in the right direction. Personally, I'd use price of one to buy more t-paper, wipes and/or investing in wash cloths that can become "family wipes" in a long term stuff hits the fan.

      I have been using washable pads and period panties for four years now. I was trying to prep for SHTF and bought washables in case I couldn’t get to a store. Then I decided to try them out because I figured it was a good idea to adjust to them before they became a necessity. I started using them just when at home and still used disposable pads and tampons for awhile. I found I liked the washables so much better!!! I made the switch and have never gone back. My daughter also switched. I keep a pack of disposable pads just for her in the bathroom though. During marching band season, she travels for competitions. She uses disposable pads if she happens to be on her period for a competition. Other than that, she just uses washables like I do.

    The whole key to prepping is, as you say slow and steady. If you keep adding each week when you do your shopping, you will build up a nice emergency back up supply over time. That doesn't break the bank, As I say to on my channel. I think most of us do it this way, a little at a time.

    Awesome! I grew up in a family that always canned, and I've canned all my life (every year). My grandmother was a single mother during the great depression, she always preached to us grandkids "save for a rainy day" It's just a lifestyle for us. We hardly ever buy unless it's on sale and when it is we buy a lot, we also always grown as much of our food as possible and can/freeze/dehydrate the extra. I have my grandmother's canning jars as well as some of my mom's and what I have bought second hand at flea markets/yard sales whenever I ran across them. I don't even know how many jars we have, well over a thousand, it's also a habit each time we buy groceries to grab a few boxes of canning lids (till this year, none to be found in our area, a canning community). From my experience with home canned food it's best when no older than five years old (for flavor), jellies and anything sweet (not including honey) that's home canned three years, then it starts to taste blain. That's stored in a pantry room in our house so the temps are not as cool as a cellar, of course the shelf life is longer when stored at a constant cooler temp and in the dark. I say this year qualifies as a "rainy day!"

You'd be surprised at how much sediment the coffee filter catches

    • @oldtimerlee8820
      @oldtimerlee8820 3 года назад +11

      Coffee filters can be used on top of powdery stuff, when vacuum sealing using mason jars. Cut the filter to fit and lay on top of powdered milk, for example. It keeps the powder from being pulled into & destroying the pump.
      Coffee filters can be used as dusk masks, if nothing else suitable is available.
      Coffee filters can be made into tea bags.
      Suggest getting 1 each of the cone & regular metal filter basket. Then keeping a stash of the same style paper filters. The metal baskets provide support for the additional paper filters in some situations. I also keep both 4 cup and 8-12 cup sized paper filters. Have both sized coffee makers.

    I have prepped since being in the military in various amounts since 1988. My preps have helped me get through job loss, health problems and with uncertain times in our country the last decade or more, I began preps even more. I now have what was a small bedroom dedicated as my main prep storage with floor to ceiling shelves, a chest freezer and closet. Our working pantry is in the kitchen with the fridge/freezer. Paper products are stored in an unused large bathroom and a hall linen closet houses a majority of medical/hygiene preps. Basically, any room is a preps area in some way to diversify some of everything in all areas. Home security is also a major area of investment along with security cameras. Like AP, all this didn't happen in a year or two but decades... saving, investing and planning is key. I will prep until I am no longer here on earth. I use 5 to 12 items in my meal plan this week, I will replace and double those items. Can of corn 44 cents, I used one I buy 2 and so on. We save, reuse, recycle, sell items not used for extra funds. Be safe, be kind, prep always and God Bless.

I think they are just sending the dented cans online and maybe selling the good cans at Walmart....who knows. I was not happy about that =(. I've also bought Nutrient Survival and some other freeze dried veggies, meats, butter, eggs etc.... so I think I'm ok, but I don't think it's enough for Q family of 7-8 people and we are all adults, no wee ones, but a cute smart doggie!! If you have the funds, just increase BASIC foods a bit. Yesterday, I bought another 20 lb bag of rice that I plan to vac seal in mason jars. Can't afford to buy a bunch of them, at a time. Yet, gradually our supply of rice is growing. Flour, sugar, salt, dried beans (peas, lentils, bean soup mix), cornmeal, tuna packs ($1 at our Walmart), oatmeal are a few of the basics that come to mind. Walmart has canned vegetables @ $.50 per can. Shop the BOGO sales and put the free item into long term storage. I buy popcorn in plastic bags and store in jars. Less expensive than the microwave stuff. Have a microwave popcorn popper and a stove top popper if the grid goes down.
      Shop at all the $ variety of stores, keeping in mind that some of the things sold there are not bargains. Keeping an eye on unit pricing helps avoid overspending at those places. In some cases I prefer the smaller container sizes, as there's less to go to waste if I can't refrigerate, for example.
      Store what you eat and eat what you store. The best bargain xyz is almost worthless if you don't like it and won't normally eat it. Because another tenet of good pantry storage is to rotate food storage using FIFO. (First In, First Out). You're not likely to grab that older can of XYZ because you don't like fish or figs. That's $$ wasted, if you bought it because John Smith likes it.
      Wherever you go watch for clearance sales and clearance bins. I've saved quite a bit of money by buying meats on "manager's specials" and then canning it. Same thing at one of the Walmarts in my area that often has pantry items in a clearance section. Just be selective, as you don't want 1/2 price dented cans or ripped packaging for example.
      Don't get discouraged. Every can or box you can put in your pantry is one step closer to be self-reliant and independent. This journey is indeed, one step at a time. Speaking from experience as I've been on the road a mighty long time.

      Oldtimer Lee White rice will be good for at least 2-3 years if you leave it in the original packaging and take care to protect it from bugs. All you real need is to keep it in a 5 gallon bucket (new or very clean, not one used for paint or chemicals) with a lid. Use a mylar bag or food grade bucket if you can, but if you don’t have those available, just the regular orange bucket is ok for rice and beans that Rae still in their original packaging. If it can sit on a store shelf for a couple of years with no protection, it can certainly stay safe in your pantry or food storage area when it’s protected from bugs and rodents and light by being in a sturdy plastic bucket. You just want to avoid direct contact of your food with “regular’ plastic buckets that are not listed as food grade.

    Hey AP, did the same on the mason jars. Three months ago, topped off the collection right in front of the canning SHORTAGES and wow, am I glad; feel sooooo blessed!!! One day want a pantry that looks similar without meat...lol...as a plant-based person, I stock very little can meat for the kiddos!!! When that runs out, they will have to eat products made with vital wheat gluten in the form of nicely seasoned chicken or beef LIKE products. We will need to grow a garden to balance their pasta and small meat storage. Lol...thanks for sharing.

      I haven't used paper towels in maybe 3 years. I did buy a package of "bar mops" but you could just use old hand towels or wash cloths or rags. What I did, was (and still do) is simply neatly fold the stack and place it right by the paper towel holder. This makes them accessible and easy to convert the habit. We grab these for anything from a napkin for dinner, to cleaning up a cat throwup on the floor lol!! I wash them in the towel load in the washer, so it's not an extra wash load, and they get washed with bleach. So no matter what they get used for, they are good to go. Just stop buying them :)

    Weeeeell, 36 cycles is 3 years for one woman. You have 2 women there don’t you? Or has Little Miss Alaska Prepper moved out?
    I would recommend also getting either some reusable cloth pads or period undies for them. As long as there’s water and soap to wash them, they will last years. With snow around most of the year, I’m guessing washing water won’t be an issue. Don’t buy them without input from your ladies, as they will know what they need way better than you do, but make sure you tell them to get enough to not need to do washing mid cycle, plus an extra 1 or 2 as a backup. They can take a while to line dry if it’s not ideal weather, so they don’t want to run out and need to wash in a hurry.

    • @carolb5677

    • @moniquem783
      @moniquem783 3 года назад +2

      Carol B it’s a hard decision isn’t it! I ummed and ahhhed for weeks before I took the plunge. I’m very happy with mine, but they’re an Australian company so not sure if you can get them. ModiBodi is the brand if you want to look them up.
      For your girls I would suggest narrowing the options down to 2 or 3 brands, then buying them each one pair from each of those brands so they can try them and let you know which is their favourite, then you can buy enough to last the whole cycle of the ones you know they like. The trial ones would do as the couple of extras as backups unless they’re such a bad fit that they’re horribly uncomfortable for them.

      Good idea. People forget this is the way it was done back in the days.also white( don't wash them in harsh detergents or bleach)socks stuffed with cloth is good also.Sounds gross but soak the used socks in cold water to remove blood.I say white socks because of where they being used for.

    • @moniquem783
      @moniquem783 3 года назад +3

      delphine yes indeed. Although from the stories my mum tells, the current options are way more comfortable and less bulky!
      The sock method would get you out of a jam for sure, but geez that sounds uncomfortable so it would certainly be a last resort for me! Good point on the white. I got black undies as I didn’t want to see stains, but that also means I can’t actually see that they’re completely clean. Not a problem right now as I know my washing machine does a good job, plus I throw them in a stains cycle now and then which gets absolutely everything out, but if I was hand washing them I would want to see it to be sure I was done.

    Love your pantry, Alaska Prepper! It's a good idea to take off the bands so that if botulism develops, it will break the seal. If you leave the bands on, they can help reseal the jar and you won't know it. Botulism is very rare, but still a good idea to take the bands off.

    Canning Jars: I went to one of our local Walmarts in central North Carolina. They had restocked their canning section. Yes! There was a good assortment & quantity of Ball jars from the tiny jelly jars to a couple of cases of 1/2 gallon. While they didn't have any regular mouth lids, they had a full display case of wide mouth. Even had a waterbath canner! While the urge was great to do otherwise, only bought 3 packs of lids, 1 case of pints & 1 case of 1/2 gallon. I hope this is a sign that food preservation supplies will be coming back, soon. Presto website states estimated availability of their 23 qt pressure canner is November, 16 qt January.

    Rudy, your videos are great! From an OLD pepper, I have been prepping since the early 70's when I sold Perma Pac. I am in my middle 70's now and I have been canning since I was 21. I have gardened and canned thousands of jars in my life time. Mother of 6 and other family. In that time I NEVER have lost a quart, ever, and I have canned most everything. And, I ALWAYS leave my rings on my jars. I leave them loose after they have rested 24 hours after canning and wiping them down. Depending on what I have canned I will remove the lid, wash it and the top of the jar and replace the ring loosely. I did not want to take up space with a container full of rings. Keep canning, it is the best way to go. This way you know what you and your family are eating. I used to put up over 1000 quarts a year between canning, freezing, pickling, jamming and dehydrating foods. Most fruits then we were able to get from gleaning. Busy Days!
