    Use the freezer!!!!!!!!!!! I have an old non-working upright freezer (and it was free) in my storage room. I use it as a mouse-proof pantry for dry goods for short term. Especially those in paper or plastic bags... ramen, rice, oats, flour, taco seasoning pkts, gravy mixes, cake mixes, etc...

    We started doing this a little while ago but when covid hit we tapped into our supply cause we were that financially strained. Now that we are back to normal job wise we've started up again, and sort of teamed up with my parents who also have a storage supply. We've been feeling a bit stressed knowing election is coming and winter and so much in the wind of "what ifs" but I hope our best will be enough. There's just so much talk out there and it's a constant concern in my house being my husband is military and gets called away for National guard purposes , and he wants to know the kids and I will be ok. Trusting God for the outcome ultimately though.

    You have a wonderful pantry, young lady.
    I’m 60 years old and have learned over the years that the number one thing he has to keep everything in airtight containers.
    Mice and bugs can get into things very easily.
    I do keep few boxes of macaroni and cheese, but I keep it in a tote. That’s because I’ve had my two through stuff like that.
    I keep powdered sugar, brown sugar, and regular sugar as well as flour and airtight containers. I’ve had weevils in my flour.
    You can also keep staff and vacuum sealed bags, then stick into totes. Food isn’t cheap.
    Great video,

I wish I had food storage. When the pandemic hit it really made me think about getting it going. I started buying food but haven’t kept up with the food storage. Only store what you eat, and eat what you store. Canned goods last way way longer than the dates on the can. that is a marketing tool for the stores. Don't be taken in by them. Unless the can has blown (swollen) it fine use your senses smell look and possibly taste. If it looks smells off then discard it. Stay safe everyone. Love from the uk 🇬🇧

      Yes, yes, yes!!! Stock up on what you regularly consume only when on sale and rotate it properly. If done right, prepping can actually save you money. For example, I know it is not technically food, but I go through a tub of Folgers coffee about every 2 weeks. I refuse to pay $10, $12, $15 a tub. I only buy it when it is on sale for $6.88 at Walmart, Giant Tiger, etc. every 3-4 months. I always have 20-26 tubs stored. That is a saving of about $150/year.

    I keep a big black sharpie in my pantry and as I rotate with new items or do a general inventory I check dates. If something is coming up on it’s expiration or use by I’ll put a large visible X on it. Then that item is easily noticeable and is an item I plan to use in my next month of meals. My friend’s grandma used a grease pencil on her home canned jars the same way but would mark jars she felt had been in her pantry past her self imposed use by. I don’t mark more than a few items a year but it helps keep me accountable in that if too many of the same item end up marked in a given cycle I know to scale back or not repurchase because tastes change. For longer term storage it’s smart to rotate those into your regular pantry in a staggered pattern when they’re a few years out so you can restock with dates that extend out further. That way your stock never truly stagnates. Think moving targets when thinking of expirations. You should be rotating enough they just keep moving forward with you.

    • @oldtimerlee8820
      @oldtimerlee8820 4 года назад +2

      Please note that "Best By" dates are NOT expiration dates. For canned foods, as long as the seal isn't broken, the food is safe to eat. As long as the seal is intact, nothing can get into the container to spoil the food. Yes, over time there can be some nutrition loss, plus, flavor, color and/or texture changes. These don't affect safety, as long as the seal is intact. Please do learn the signs of spoilage: bulging cans, excessive foaming, foul odor, mold and unexpected color changes.
      I use a Sharpie and put the Best By date (month/year) on the front of the package where it is easily seen. This is done to make sure we use the oldest first. FIFO inventory management system. First In, First Out. The easiest way to do this, IMO, is to have a simple rule. Nothing goes onto a pantry shelf until it is dated. That means a bag of canned goods will sit on the floor, until I have time to put them where they belong using FIFO. Since they are in the way, that's a good motivation to get the job done. :-)

    I've been working on mine since 2012. If you go grocery shopping weekly, purchase 10 extra cans each week and in 1 year you will have 520 cans stored up in 1 year. If you eat 3 cans of food per day, one for Breakfast, one for Lunch and one for Dinner. This will give you a 173 day food supply. This is 9 to 10 days shy of a half year supply. After 3 months move all your new cans in your pantry and bring up the oldest for consumption.
    You may want to look into long rerm prepper food. These can have a shelf life of 20 to 25 years.
    Start prepping now because you don't know what tomorrow may bring. Make sure you also have a garden as a backup. Learn to hunt and fish also as a backup.

    Well done! Once you have a well stocked pantry then you can buy everything when it's on sale and buy as many as you can knowing what you will consume in a reasonable amount of time. Dehydrating and canning is another tool for long term food storage, if you can follow a recipe you can pressure can food. I buy most of our meats on sale then I can it, ground beef, beef, pork, chicken, turkey, fish it makes for very quick meals. Storing items in glass gives it a longer shelf like than storing it in cardboard or plastic (Ball makes half gallon jars). Freeze all flour for a few days before adding to the pantry, it kills off any eggs or bugs that cause it to go bad quicker, keep all nuts in the freezer if you can, they will last twice as long. I always store my yeast in the freezer till I open it, then it stays in the fridge after that, lasts twice as long that way. An extend pantry has always been a lifestyle for us, something my grandmother taught us (a single parent during the great depressing).

    For cooking cow milk, drive up to Logan “Gossner Foods”or to North Salt Lake “Lee’s Grocery Store,” They sell milk that will last for years as a liquid on the self. You can also buy Ghee at Costco which is bottled butter.

    Great job stocking for your family. I strongly suggest for your dry goods that you get them into some sort of airtight container to ensure you don't attract bugs. I store mine in juice and 2 liter soda bottles, for example, with an oxygen absorber. They will last for years that way. You can also put little things like your cornbread mix, muffin mixes in food saver type bags.

    the best thing to come out of the pandemic...people are realizing they NEED to be prepared. We have had a HUGE stock since 2004, we were hit with a catagory five hurricane, still in FLorida, and three weeks no power, stores couldnt take debit, etc etc, since that time, our children have all moved out and had children of their own, we have moved to another state...but could still take on any family that showed up. Once you start, its an addiction....recently we have had to slow down a bit as ammo prices started to explode, but, .... Biggest thing i can add, for new preppers...have a way to cook this food...if you dont have a wood stove, make sure you have a really good grill. We also use a coffee press... i have an amazing cast iron tea pot...no power, no problem, we still have fresh brewed coffee every day...its important to have the comfort stuff, coffee, candy...We also fill every empty cat litter jug with water...no, we wont cook with it, or drink it....but we can flush our toilets with it...

    I started prepping a few years ago. I living in hurricane country and am a military veteran, so I'm a firm believer of being prepared for everything. My issue is not having enough space. I'm trying to figure out a system that works, but I only have two cabinets I can use at the moment for canned goods. I do have access to a deep freezer and we have a big garden, so we've been able to freeze lots of fresh veggies. We live on a big farm and are trying to be as self sustainable as possible at least when it comes to growing as much food as possible. We had a very good year for veggies. We're going to try to grow strawberries and fruits next year.We're also doing more watermelons and things like that. I'd love to be able to grow apple trees and some kind of orange or pears at some point, but I don't know if our climate will tolerate that or not.

      Put a couch type table behind couch. This can be 5 gallon buckets stacked two high with board across them. If buckets pick over top of couch, put cloth on board. End tables can also be buckets with board. Totes can be stacked as end tables. Coffee table can be 2 totes with lovely cloth covering. Side table by bed, again totes. I pick up totes @ my local thrift. Most of the time they have no lids, but I put my items in glass jars to store. Lay a board across & good to go. Deep bookcases could have books in front & 1 to 2 rolls of stacked cans behind. God bless.

    I love my old freezer that doesn’t work, I use it to store soap, tissue, water from sinks for washing dishes or flushing toilets. Shampoos & conditioners, tooth paste, etc, things that will never ruin n things not necessarily for consumption persay… it frees up space for things u HAVE to rotate. I love to refill my dish soap bottles after use to have a bottle full of water with soap in it. Same with laundry detergent bottles. Waste not, don’t rise the bottles just refill with sink water n great for washing hands when water lines are down.

Ex: if you eat 2 cans of beans a month x 12=24...things with a short shelf live I buy what I can consume before it expires. Every month I buy 2 to 4 items for the whole year.

    Agree. November will be nuts. I feel like just going to the store may be scary for a little while. Rioting, looting etc. And then add in a possible shortage of food. I would much rather just stay home if the streets are crazy. People think about food stock piles, but some don't think about personal care items too, those are very important, especially meds and first aid items. Also another thing to stock up on would be gas. If you have gas cans, fill them up, gas wont stay good for a super long time, but good to have on hand for generators. We live in upstate NY, so with our winters we always try to be prepared for generator use anyway. Thank you for sharing

    • @ashleyhuze
      @ashleyhuze  4 года назад +7

      YES!! My thoughts exactly. We might just not WANT to go out towards the end of the year due to riots/more sickness etc. who freakin knows! If this year taught us anything it’s that ANYTHING at anytime can happen! With little to no warning! Why not be prepared, even if it’s just a few weeks worth of “extra!” 🤷🏼‍♀️
      We have another bedroom in our basement we’ve converted to storing supplies (so anything that’s non-food) and I will go through all that in another video ASAP! Things people don’t think about like toothpaste, shampoo, dish soap, laundry soap (we even have a hand washer in case no electricity to wash clothes) and let’s not forget about toilet paper 🧻😂 I’ve really tried to think of everything we could possibly need with “no power” since losing power has happened to us so often this year. We are right on a fault line and had a few earthquakes this year but we’re expected to have a BIG one any time. We probably wouldn’t have power for weeks or even months if that happened. Again, I think it’s just smart to prepare for anything that could happen for where YOU live! Some people are hit with tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. prep for what you think you need most!👏🏻

    I started a one year pantry back in the 70s but in the last 20 years I began a three year pantry and I love it but last year I went a stop farther so I bought a foodsaver to do vacuum foods like white rice, and all kinds of noodles, and frozen vegetables fruit meet, and floor. Then I bought a Bread maker so I can make my own bread and Bakery goods then I got a freezer and two generator’s and a wood stove in case the power grid get compromised then I figured out what products I bought the most of each month so then I went to many stores looking for sales or the things that were 10 for 10 or buy one get one free go for the can goods first then go to the staple items next I use a big bottle of dish every month so every three years I buy 36 bottles same goes for garbage, foil, zip lock bags, shampoo,salt pepper, spices. Start out small and the cheaper items first then build from there and also start making you meals from scratch as much as you can my Parents and grandparents lived through the Great Depression and they tough us a lot I can make a big turkey dinner one day and make three other meals out of it the same thing with other big meals. Once you get into thinking The Great Depession mindset it’s fun to do and stop buying processed food they are expensive and doesn’t taste as good as homemade

Just so you have an idea of prices, here a 5 kg bag of rice costs like RS 35,00 or more nowadays. Even with the Pandamic, we cannot afford that.
