    The fact Two Timer and Fifty-Fifty never got a proper episode in BTAS is a crime. They are easily some of the best BTAS-related stories ever, and are the only Two-Face stories from that universe that manage to keep same depressing tone and deep dives into Harvey’s character that the original Two-Face had and excelled at. If WB were to ever make a continuation to BTAS or create a series with a similar tone and writing style, they better make at least one (Ideally both) into episodes.

    Oh, for heaven's sake! There's like MILLIONS of terrific batman TAS to choose for! I remember reading yet another "it's a wonderful life" take on batman where the phantom stranger shows him a gotham without the batman:
    SPOILERS
    It's a PERFECT tragedy where a turf war between joker and two-face claims james gordon's life.

    If you wanna see how dark the people from the Animated Series can go, try picking up Batman: Black and White. It's a compilation of stories from different artists and writers, but one of the highlights is definitely Two of a Kind, written and drawn by Bruce Timm himself. A very, very dark Two-Face story. It's a blast.

    Two Timer is one of the better uses of the Joker. It goes to show that you don’t have to fill a graveyard, show some gruesome torture, or have some damn near supernatural suspension of disbelief to use the Joker correctly.

    Damn, you really sent me back with these reviews... the French translated run of this comic was my very first "collection" as a young kid (in love with Burton's Batman movies & TAS... ), that my parents would buy me once in a while.
    It really defined the way I would always view Two-Face, Riddler, Harley, and of course Joker... damn, the panels of him beating Jim Gordon on the head with a bat on TV, I recall that it really made me uneasy at the time.
    Thanks a lot for the video as usual, you're doing great work

    15:20 I just realized that "Bromley" is a reference to Brom Bones from the Legend of Sleepy Hollow, which Crane's name and character was partially inspired by. And given his role as a teacher and dressing up as a dark entity to scare his rival for the girl's affections in the story... it's basically a weird reversal/homage to the story with Batman characters.

    Nearly all of your choices are among my favorites, too, though I'd place them in a different order. In fact, there are only two not mentioned here that I would include. I know you intentionally left "Mad Love" out of the running, but that would be one of them, and it would definitely be in my top three. The other is "But a Dream." In my opinion, even more than "Batman: Madness" or "Tea Time" from Joker's Asylum, that is the greatest Mad Hatter comic ever made. Fitting, I suppose, given which Hatter is the focus. It would have been number one on that list if it had been a mainstream story, and it may very well be my favorite TAS comic story of them all. I'm sure this surprises absolutely no one.
    The absolute biggest change I think I'd make, besides including those two, is that the first Annual comic would probably be my second or third place pick; it's right up there with "Mad Love." In fact - and this is pure coincidence, I promise - there's a TPB entitled "Mad Love & Other Stories," which includes Mad Love and the first Annual. (I guess calling it "Mad Love and the First Annual" wasn't as catchy a title.) Needless to say, I own it, and I cherish it. I'm not sure which of the two I prefer more; I'm actually tempted to say the annual might top Mad Love, the more I think about it, but it's a VERY slim margin.
    Below those top three, I'm not sure which stories I'd exclude to make room for the two I've added; I'm tempted to say it would be "Harley and Ivy...and Robin?" and "It Takes a Cat." Not because either one is bad, mind you. They're both AWESOME stories. If I did a top twelve (and, like you, ONLY included TAS based ones and not TNBA based ones), they'd be on there. They'd just take the bottom spots. In a top ten, however, in either case, they're FANTASTIC, but I just like others more.
    Again, beyond that, all the others would remain, but the ordering would be different. I regret to admit that the Two-Face-centric stories would likely be a fair bit lower for me, but that it is not because they are bad stories or anything like that. I guess it's just the simple fact that, just as you have a bias towards Harvey, I'll have a bias for certain other characters.
    Anyway, this list has been a long time coming, and I was VERY happy to see your opinions. Again, really the only one I was disappointed not to see here was "But a Dream." And there are a couple of stories from the TNBA days I really like, but if you ever do a list devoted to those, we'll see how that pans out. (Some GREAT Riddler stories there, by the way.)

    I knew 'Just Another Night' would make the list. That bit with Batman standing away from the kid so he won't scare him and the kid telling him he only scares bad guys has stuck with me for decades. You'll have fun with the early issues of Gotham Adventures and the Batman Adventures revival after that is excellent. Even the STAS spin off book Superman Adventures had some stone cold classic Superman stories by Mark Millar.

  • @GamerSlyRatchet1

    Cartoon comic tie-ins are an incredibly underrated sub-genre. The TNBA comics are excellent and I've heard the S:TAS ones are pretty good, written by Mark Millar, of all people. Young Justice's comic tie-in actually are completely in-canon and foreshadowed stuff from the show or were acknowledged in the third season. The Batman Strikes! was honestly so much better than The Batman, since it actually bothered to explore villains and supporting characters the show introduced, then quickly tossed aside.

      Agreed. The original Teen Titans (2003-06) Had a comic series. Weirdly enough, it was called "Teen Titans Go!". Thankfully, it's not connected to the horrible reboot. My favorite issue is #47, Regarding Robin. It's actually really sad and depressing. It shows Robin greiving on the anniversary of his parent's death, with a cameo from a certain Dark Knight! The series is true to the series, and definitely worth a read.

    _THANK_ _YOU_ for including "Riot Act" (I Riot, II Those who can't do..!) Crane's nightmare being in front of a classroom on work release is surreal and his plot is quite unique in terms of Scarecrow tales. And I agree it offered a glimpse into Crane's guilt-ridden psyche that BTAS never afforded him.
    But where are the Threatening Three?? - Perfesser, Mastermind and Nice?? "Last Riddler Story", "Smells Like Black Sunday", "Natural Born Loser" and "The End"?? Granted, they're an arc unto themselves.
    If you ever do a "Gotham Adventures", please include "Gotham Adventures #48, Actions" (Think Fast!) The last page _still_ leaves me misty-eyed... ("I am, like everyone else, continually surprised by him.")
    And "Saving Face" in issue #46. And _don't_ _forget_ ... Kim.

    Thank you so much for covering this Mr. Rogues. There are truly some underrated gems in all the DCAU comics. They meant a lot to me when I started collecting comics and a lot of them only improve for me over time. Ty Templeton is great! He especially excels at writing Two-Face and Riddler. Riddler had a few good stories in these two volumes you listed but he has a few truly great ones in TNBA line Batman Gotham Adventures and Batman Adventures (the second volume). Just to let you know the last Batman Adventures volume is actually more serialized than the previous ones. It takes place when Batman was part of the Justice League and showed what kind of craziness he dealt with Gotham during that time. There are more three to four issue arcs in that series compared to the other volumes. Looking forward to you hopefully covering those volumes sometime down the line! Thanks again for this video! It was a pleasant surprise!

    7:10 - 9:05/ One telling aspect to this scheme by the Scarecrow is that he's actually going into Mad Hatter territory. If you'll recall, BTAS had a great episode titled PERCHANCE TO DREAM. Let's just say Batman gets a sad dose of reality courtesy of a sudden lapse in literacy.

    Sorry to be a memer, but... INSTANT like. I really appreciate these comics, they are like an extension of the Animated Series (with a little less censorship) and they deserve more love and attention. Some choice picks too, the Scarecrow appearances and Twoface stuff, the specials and "Just another Night" in particular... altough I'm surprised, no Threatening Trio anywhere. They were the funniest thing about this comic for me. Their third story is so damn stupid, just remembering it exists makes me smile.
    Anyways, great job, Rogues.

      Spring's Sprangyard I think the TAS/TNBA comics had the perfect blend of not being as shackled down to children’s television, but not as “mature” where gore and excessively swearing and the like are used for shock value.

      @Marsh388 - totally agree. The BTAS comics - "Batman" / "& Robin" / "Gotham" and back to "Batman Adventures" - _really_ understood the characters and mythos and with BTAS as a springboard they were able to tell, in my opinion, better stories that often showcased a more sympathetic angle to the villains, explored relationships they had with third parties only hinted at in the series, and how compassionate Batman could be with them. One of the collections' blurbs read, "This isn't Batman-lite, it's _classic_ Batman", and that it certainly was. Glad I started buying Gotham Adventures back in '98, and later forking out for the rest of 'em in a set on ebay from Batman Adventures #1. Best $100 I ever spent!
      And I'll always sing the praises of "Natural Born Loser" in "Batman Adventures #30"... _Best_ _Batman_ _story_ _ever_ with three villains' backstories, a compelling glimpse into everyday life in Gotham with two old ladies using a public payphone, a jail breakout _and_ a chase - and Batman himself only appears in the last panel!

    Great list Rogues!
    I have read a few TAS comics, and I honestly think they are slightly better than the cartoon. It explores the other rogues more thoroughly and make them sympathetic. It also focuses on other members of the supporting cast, such as Gordon, who did not have an episode focuses on him in the cartoon.
    I am surprise. Two timers weren't your #1, but I knew a two-face story would appear as your favourite TAS comic.

    • @goblintributemaker2539
      @goblintributemaker2539 4 года назад

      I am pretty sure he prefers Fifty Fifty to Two Timer because the latter is such a dark and depressing story and the ending basically implies there’s no hope left for Harvey. Knew the Harvey vs Joker story would be on here, Heroic Harvey's always great. *Love* that Scarecrow story about illiteracy, everyone really forgets he was a teacher as much as a professor. It's an aspect that would make me like him a lot more if used often.
    Two-Timer as a movie would've been cool, but its ending was always so depressing.
    Also, what was that cover showing Harvey, Batman, and Ivy together? Cuz like, I would read that teamup.
    Just Another Night was an awesome story. 'Nuff said.

I would love a best Legion of Doom stories. I use your lists as a blueprint to buy batman comics to read. Thank you!

    Not having any of these comics I can't even try to make a list. But reading them sounds like such a terrible task that anyone else who has to read them, I'll sacrifice myself and read them for you:) Wait a minute. Mr. Rouges likes rouges? I get a weird feeling there was a hint somewhere.

    I never could bring myself to truly embrace Heath Ledger's Joker, and I think the Batman Adventures comics were partly to blame. Heath's joker just explained wAAAAay too much. And as the Joker in Mad Love so perfectly stated...
    "If you have to explain a joke, THERE IS NO JOKE!"
    They should have instead taken a lesson from the Batman and Robin Adventures. When Batman asks Joker why he did something especially mean, what's his reply?
    "Because it was tuesday! Ha... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!"

    Dude you’re right. I can’t name a single good Catwoman centered episode from TAS. I loved an episode she did with Nightwing on TNBA, but other than that nothing.

    • @Marsh388
      @Marsh388 4 года назад

      SlyGuy21 Yeah Catwoman was more of a damsel in distress throughout BTAS, she gained her more playful antics in TNBA but the damage was already done... I really think they shouldn’t have unmasked her and made her civilian identity public knowledge in her FIRST appearance.

      Her early episodes were especially weak. Her later ones got better - Catwalk and Batgirl Returns - but still not as fantastic as the other rogue's episodes.

    This Scarecrow plot is basically the same one as The Tower of Babel, in which Ra's Al Ghul steals Batman contigency plan against the members of the League and use it to distract the JLA while he execute a much bigger plan of making the whole world
    illiterate so humanity will kill themselves in the chaos.

      Alexandre Frauches and why he should have been in a Justice league episode

    • @alexandrefrauches132
      @alexandrefrauches132 4 года назад

      @@srstriker6420 True, although I can see why it didn't happen. Not only the idea of a member keeping secrets from the League was explore in the season 2 finale "Starcrossed" (which I think is a much better story) but also, after the two seasons, the creators lost the rights for Batman, who at the time was gainning a new tv series The Batman, which is why characters like Alfred or the Joker don't appear after season 2 (there's even rumors that Joker would be a member of Legion of Doom and the JLU finale would have him, Batman, Superman and Luthor joinning forces against Darkseid).

    • @alexandrefrauches132
      @alexandrefrauches132 4 года назад

      @@srstriker6420 "and why he should have been in a Justice league episode"
      And also in the Justice League Doom, in which the plot was based on the same story, with the main difference was that instead of Ra's the villains were Vandal Savage and the Legion of Doom (which a personally wasn't a fan since it's doesn't explain how Savage knew about Batman secret identity nor how he knew about the contingency plans).
      If someday DC/Warner is able to fix the mess that is their DC movie universe, it would be cool if their eventually do a more faithfull adaptation of Tower of Babel, this time with Ra's Al Ghul as the main villain.
