The last cigar factory in Tampa keeps rolling

  • History lives here, inside the J.C. Newman Cigar Co. Machines manufactured in the 1930s are still used to pack and roll the cigars, and the sights and smells are throwbacks. Tampa was once home to 150 cigar factories, which churned out millions of cigars in the early part of the 20th century and shipped them worldwide.

I admit I am sort of a cigar snob, but I really enjoyed the video, watching the vintage machines bam bam bam punching those manufactured stogies out like a machine gun. There is a real magical kind of aura about it. I am a recently retired seaman and so I am used to getting Cubans, but lately I have been messing around with rolling my own. Sometimes I will have a Fuente 8-5-8 or a Hemmingway Short Story and I won't refuse a Dominican Romeo Robusto, But my first ever cigar was a Tampa Nugget Sublime and I had probably smoked about 1000 of them by the time I was old enough that I didn't have to lie at the store and say they were for my Dad. I even had a Swisher Sweet or two. Once I discovered long filler hand rolls, I was hooked, and then, Habanos. But I still remember getting green about the gills from my first Tampa Nugget, and the satisfaction I got from the second one. Then my uncle found me puffing away and suggested that I not inhale. LOL! Anyway thanks for posting the vid.

Many Cubans received their education in cigar factories. Many old timers that I knew that are no longer with us would make cigars while a young person would read the newspaper, Cervantes, and even the bible. One old woman that I knew was completely senile and unable to speak. But she rolled imaginary cigars for years until she died. True story.

Please set aside the reality when watching this vid, the reality that ‘Smoking kills’. In some of the most horrible ways. ‘Passive smoking ‘ can be even worse, so households where thoughtless adults will smoke, the children are breathing in these toxic fumes, and are dieing! This is the last cigar factory in this area, this man tells us, roll on closure. Longer cleaner and healthier lives are far more important than the preservation of attractive smelling cute vintage cigar factories. Surely?

Like using hand sanitizer all the time? You have not a clue. You mean well but don't know what you say!

Weekly cigar smoking has zero health risk. Driving is far more dangerous.

yeah, and stop using hand sanitizer all the time, it is just as bad as CIGAR smoking. You don't inhale cigars. It's people that think like you that has had a negative effect on the cigar culture injuring a whole industry and culture that is nothing like the cigarette industry, but.... you didn't know that. Just regulate it! More government! I am sure you mean well, but you DON'T have a clue!
