    The point of failure would not be the steel cable, it would be the winch mounting being torn off the car's frame, or a failure in the anchor at the top where they fastened it to the brick dam.

      Winches have their faults.. like that winch could have easily ripped out from his car.. with the weight of it being pulled.. I've seen it on one of the other Top Gear Episodes where they attempt to winch another car out and it broke.. I would have passed that challenge and said no too dangerous.. and bit foolish as well.. the winch at the top yes they had crew.. but again whatever was keeping it up was under strain/tension too. worried about chord breaking.. on top of the winch detaching itself from the car.. it's not as simple as just winching a chord to a car.. there's always things, unknown things that can go wrong.. e.g. both engines cutting out..

      It's based on an advert/commercial Land Rover did with a 90. However in the advert the winch was on top of the dam. So as a farewell to Land Rover they replicated it with a series 1 Land Rover but with the winch actually on the vehicle.

    • @MrSpookylukey
      @MrSpookylukey 8 лет назад +58

      +Kris S for starters it's winching not towing. Winching is a means of self recovery towing is another vehicle moving your vehicle. I'm assuming you are unfamiliar with the concept of off-roading? Yes you can do this with any true 4wd not an SUV, but any 4x4 with a decent approach angle and departure angle will do it. However no Audi or BMW or normal car will do it. For starters a winch cannot be fitted to either of those vehicles, those cars will rip themselves to bits by over exceeding the approach and departure angles. And lastly and I cannot stress this enough it was an advert.
      Do you complain every time you see a Saab and it doesn't turn into a jet fighter?
      It was a send off for Land Rover because Land Rover made the advert.

The steeper you try to climb, the less grip your tires have simply because a smaller amount of force is holding the tire onto the surface you are driving on. If you go too steep, the tires lose all grip and you fall down. As for the stunt cars that do loop-de-loops, those are specially shaped ramps to maintain a minimum amount of normal force based on the centrifugal force created by the car changing direction (upward in this case).

    Seeing this I get goosebumps already. I have Acrophobia perhaps that I am extremely scared of a high place like this.

    a 2nd winch to connect to a secondary point when at the top, take the slack off the 1st and reposition, then use both to clear the top.

    Wait, multiple people think it would somehow be possible to just drive up a dam without the aid of a winch?
    Watch fewer movies, guys. You can't defy physics by gurning and being really strong.

    With a cable and winch? You could pull up a Sherman tank with the right winch.

  • @hjeffcoat42
    @hjeffcoat42 8 лет назад +10

    So they didn't drive it, they just pulled it up with a winch. So what? That's hardly dependent on Land Rover being a well built vehicle. it's just up to the winch

    • @nuclearsandwiches3064
      @nuclearsandwiches3064 6 лет назад +1

      It's a reference to an old range rover advert where it pulled itself up a dam with it's winch, to pay homage to this they replicated it.

      Ya I noticed that. At the end it does look like he was shot from the top... but it seems like a huge insurance liability to have the star do this. I'm not convinced he was actually in it.

    • @JetFalcon710

      He is traveling vertically, of course you'd only see the same spot on the ground. If you look really closely, you can also see the movements of the car
