2016 marks the monumental return of one of heavy rock’s most unique, revered and fearless bands of the last three decades, Opeth. Over the years, the experimental, prog veterans have continuously reinvented themselves, pushing the boundaries of their craft and expectations of fans and critics alike.
OPETH’s new album, Sorceress, their first for Nuclear Blast via the band’s imprint label Moderbolaget Records, is proof chief architect Mikael Åkerfeldt has a near-endless well of greatness inside. From the album’s opener 'Persephone' to 'The Wilde Flowers' and 'Strange Brew' to the album’s counterpart title tracks 'Sorceress' and 'Sorceress II', OPETH’s twelfth full-length is an unparalleled adventure, where visions cleverly and secretly change, colors mute as if weathered by time, and sounds challenge profoundly.
Sorceress Track List:
1. Persephone
2. Sorceress
3. The Wilde Flowers
4. Will O The Wisp
5. Chrysalis
6. Sorceress 2
7. The Seventh Sojourn
8. Strange Brew
9. A Fleeting Glance
10. Era
11. Persephone (Slight Return)
”The new album "Sorceress" is our 12th studio album since our beginnings in 1990,” says Åkerfeldt. “I find it difficult to understand that we’ve been going on for 26 years, let alone that we’ve made 12 records now, all of which I am very proud of. ”Sorceress” is no exception. I love this album, as does the whole band. I wrote the music during 5-6 months and we spent only 12 days recording it at Rockfield studios in Wales. I find that once again we’ve taken a step forward. Or sideways, Or backwards. Somewhere!? It’s different! It’s extremely diverse. And if I may say so myself, extremely good. I feel the right to say that since I like to think I know this band better than anyone on the planet. Also, I always manage to detach myself from the record and listen as a fan. It’s a fine little record. My favorite in our discography right now. Of course. That’s how it should be, right? It’s both fresh and old, both progressive and rehashed. Heavy and calm. Just the way we like it. Hopefully there’ll be others around the globe sharing this opinion. It was a joy to make it. A fucking joy to record it, and a sheer joy listening to it. So there you have it!”
For Sorceress, OPETH returned to Rockfield Studios in Wales, also home to pivotal releases from Queen, Rush and Judas Priest, where the Swedes had tracked Pale Communion in 2014 with Tom Dalgety. The band spent 12 days recording at the countryside venue among its serene and inspiring surroundings. The result is nothing short of a powerful and intriguing record that will add yet another layer to the band’s celebrated career.

Everything about Opeth is so down to earth, including the members of the band, I think that's why I love them so much because when you listen to them you feel like there is no bullshit it's just well constructed, well delivered art. Even things in the past with have seemed 'gimmicky' have turned out to be key pieces to the album that without may have lessened the appreciation. I will forever be a proud Opeth fan!
I like how much Fredrik has become a part of this band. Obviously all members are integral, but he's really "owned" it in a significant way. I loved Peter's playing but Fredrik seems to own the lead guitar player spot more.
Well yeah, he's also a much more accomplished guitarist. Peter was solid at the guitar, but academia played a much more important role in his life than mastering the guitar ever did. You can tell Fredrik is a master of his craft and probably still practices incessantly.
protolexis Yes, but I'm referring to his "ownership" in the band. He really seems to care and be involved, whereas Peter didn't seem quite as invested, skill aside. Fredrik definitely does practice a lot, lead players usually need to.

According to interviews, Mike said he wished Peter would take more of a lead guitarist role and contribute more creatively but Peter did very little of that, what he did give Mike never really fit into an appropriate context and wasn't that great. Mike said he'd been drifting away from the band since like Still Life or something.
It would be more interesting if these videos include footage of the guys recording their respective instrument, like in the Ghost Reveries documentary.
I love death & prog metal Opeth as much as anyone but wow, I'm loving the newer music as well. I love hearing bands explore a range of sounds even if it's not what I'd expect. Keep up the good work I'd say!
Can't fuckin wait!
Love the format of these updates! :D
Freddie!!!
Can't wait to hear the finished product! Cheers from Florida
My best description of their new sound is a mix of old Canterbury bands like Egg + newer Alice in Chains stuff. With a touch of early Opeth.
This cat can basically play anything. I think he could've even passed an audition with Zappa if he was much older! :)
the video length starts as 4:04 then suddenly becomes 4:03
I'm dying here!
lol
This is the Best Episode..!!
Hail Opeth!
He’s an amazing guitarist using the most basic pedals, imangine if he used all the expensive hand wired ones!
Are you going to release a new single? I liked how Katatonia promoted A Fall of Hearts, they released 3 singles prior to the album launch.
Yes, Mikael mentioned there will be another 2 singles.
Specifically, Mikael did a track-by-track interview with Metal Hammer and said that they will also release "Will O the Wisp" (described as a Jethro Tull-inspired, glittery, beautiful song, but with incredibly dark lyrics) and "Era" (described as a really fast, 80s metal song that Mike reckons will be very love/hate")
Link to the interview, pretty please?
Luis Eduardo Velez Montoya It's a short one, but interesting anyway teamrock.com/feature/2016-08-26/opeth-s-track-by-track-guide-to-sorceress
Good guy +SmevMev!
make us listen to this tasty looking licks already!
Word to the bird
opeth 😍😘
the episodes from Devins new rec are far more enjoyable to watch.. and funny! pre-ordered both Sorceress and Transcendence, also "Kodama" from Alcest. looking very very forward to all of these, my god.
What do you think about devins new stuff? i love it, dear.
Did you get into Alcest because they supported Opeth by any chance? That was my introduction. Really looking forward to Kodama
no, i learned them from a friend. it was a pleasure, to see them live together.. man!
i wanted to heared guitar sounds in dis vidyo, but did not.
**is a sadwolf**
You forgot to mention that you used the Friedman BE-100 that you are playing in the videos ^^
Yeah, Marshall endorsing Opeth probably has something to do with that.
Not a single clip with audio?? C'mon
not to spoil, i guess
+Bakhadur Muslimov fans deserve better
Habran 2 singles mas, Prontisimo, espero
+Bakhadur Muslimov looking forward, ojalá pongan un poco más que está vez! Saludos
I like how a fan decides what he deserves. And when they don't get it, they call "bullshit"
I had a nightmare last night that Opeth's new album was released and that I was dissapointed. Hopefully I won't be on the 30th of September! Regarding the track listing, why does "Sorceress 2" come 3 tracks after "Sorceress"? I doubt it's a lack of imagination but you would think that Sorceress 2 would play right after the first one if there's 2 parts.
Not necessarily.
For example, Porcupine Tree's "The Sky Moves Sideways" is divided into two parts (Phase 1 and Phase 2) and are the first and last track respectively on that album.
same for floyd's shine on you, pretty common in prog i would say :)
it's true man, check out demon by gazpacho, distant satellites by anathema, grace for drowning by steven wilson to name just 3 examples of this. It can be quite a neat device in constructing an album (rather than just a collection of songs)
Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall Part 3 comes seven tracks after Part 2
+TheWildHealer omg do you even opeth bruh? What do you think happened with Patterns in the ivy? You are really dumb imo.
Would've been nice to actually hear some of the tones.... oh well, maybe it's just me.
Yeah I was expecting video diaries on par with Lamentations ... this is no where near that. :(
Swollen pickle you say..
Blowpeth
+Opeth Jay omg
Swollen pickle a fuzz face??...
