  • www.AmericanFilmArchive.org ~ American Film Archive preserves old 8mm & 16mm film footage shot from the 1920's to 1960's. We try to organize most of the collection by geographical area (cities or countries) and sometimes by theme or subject matter. Of course, some mistakes will be made as most of the old films have little documentation leaving us to guesstimate the actual geographical area. During the early era of cinema history, companies like Kodak and cameras manufacturers like Bell & Howell promoted their film products for use for recording people’s memories of their trips, life events and other special moments. Thus many travelers who could afford to travel to faraway cities, could also afford a home movie camera from which to document their trip. Unlike professional cinema where everything is perfectly composed with actors and a controlled film set, amateur home movies showcase the World from the viewpoint of a traveler looking upon the city streets and the city environment from a tourist point-of-view. This footage has been gathered up slowly over many years from many small collections. These films contain no audio, they are all silent films.
